  • This video is about how I do a soft field take off in a Mooney M20. KHFD, rolling start, pull yoke all the way back, accelerate to 70 mph and hold the aircraft just above the ground until VX 80 mph, gear up after a positive rate of climb is reached. Allow the aircraft to accelerate to VY 100 mph. At 500 ft AGL flaps come up, reduce power and RPM to 26 inches of manifold pressure and 2600 rpm on the prop. I used to fly my Mooney in Mexico a lot. Trick is over trim nose up so the nose pops up quickly and you can accelerate on the mains and keep the nose out of the sand. The Mooney trim is unique as it changes the angle on the epinage

Nice soft field TO. Well done.

Why do you reduce RPM and manifold pressure when in climb? The idea is to get as far away from the earth as quickly as possible in case of emergency. The engine is rated for continuous operation at full throttle and 2700 RPM. I know my POH recommends reducing RPM to 2550-2600 right after takeoff (I assume yours is similar), but I find this to be bad advice. Plus, this recommendation is removed from later POH's with the same engine/prop.

I understand what you are saying about reduction in power and manifold pressure. The POH for my Mooney recommends this setting for all normal climbs so that is what i follow. I have put 1100 hours on the engine so far, compression is still at 77/80 in each cylinder and the recommendation from my mechanic durning annual inspection is keep doing what i am doing.. anyway, thanks for your comment.

@@bigalsplanesimplegarage4288 Full throttle enriches mixture more and actually reduces cylinder head temperatures compared to 25" and 2500.

There’s no such thing in a Mooney, it should be “this is how all Mooney flyers pretend their doing a short field takeoff and landing”.
