As a firefighter I've learned that 1 litre
litre of water turns in to 1700 litres of steam, that's why you do not wanna extinguish a chimney fire with water, but I've never seen it IRL in a chimney, so if you could make it happen please do, also love your content and hope you carry on and have a safe life you two

Awesome idea
When I was young, we heated with a wood stove. A roaring sound in the chimney told us the chimney was on fire! It sounded like a jet engine. My Dad threw an ice tray full of ice in the stove, and the steam rising put the fire out.
No idea why RUclips thinks they need to delete "the key is the rate the water is given to it" but they did... and here's the receipt.

Very true, i think a lot of people me included forget how much preperation and effort goes into a 9 minute video sometimes

Isn't it that they live in different areas so they film a boatload of videos in like a few weeks?
I know for a fact that at 20 min video can take 12 hours or more. Way more when dealing with the hi res filming and editing.
Planning, research, gather materials, film, edit, upload, etc, etc, etc.

Seeing the glass flex -- but the silicone seals hold firm -- gives me a whole new level of respect for aquariums.
I'm not certain the glass is flexing (much). I think it's also possible we're seeing refraction in the water due to overpressure waves from the explosion. I think this because the side walls don't seem to flex that much and also it's just kinda hard to imagine aquarium glass being able to do that. Could be wrong, but I think it's worth considering.
Nevermind, I take it back. It looks like reflections off the front side wall are warping. That's a surface wave! Holy cow, I can't believe it held.
I love these two goobers so much. I'm so glad their "two guys and a camera" dynamic hasn't changed since the old days. Love you guys!

It's funnier if you realize a ton of power is still delivered by steam today. Nuclear, natural gas, oil, and coal power plants all dump their energy into water which then goes through turbines to make electricity.

Super Chromatic Peril sensitive sunglasses! As soon as they detect danger, they go completely black and opaque, working on the principle of what you can't see won't hurt you. Really cool video as usual guys :)

Dial it up to 4K and the increased bitrate makes it look much better even on a lower resolution display
It only looks bad because you're not watching it at 4K. Do that even if you're on 1080p screen always with all youtube videos.
Just a correction, crucibles are not ceramic, they are solid graphite
Thanks for an awesome video as always but my god guys please apply a refractory cement to your furnace, those ceramic fibers are no joke for your health. Untreated kaowool can get lifted up with the furnace exhaust and can get into your lungs.
I melt stuff for fun on the regular and was so concerned to see that.

This is interestingly relevant to my job.
I treat tungsten carbide in a molten chemical salt bath and those parts are then quenched in water.

Yeah, it's funny, when I watched these in college it was like "heh, we lit something on fire" and Dan was played as this like big dumb brute mostly just blowing up condoms on his head or whatever

The point around 6:35 when the additional explosion happens and for a split second looks like the tank of water lifts as a solid block before spilling over, is very cool

I just want to say that this channel never fails to remind me that there's 4k and then there's 4k. The image quality of the videos on this channel is insane. I wish all 4k videos looked like the ones these guys put out.
Love how we can see why all large scale power is "steam with extra steps". It's not the only way you could generate power; some space probes and remote lighthouses directly use radioactive heat in RTGs because it's lower maintenance. But the same water-steam expansion cycle that makes these videos so spectacular is part of what makes steam turbines so effective.

I have a small request/suggestion for future videos. Just to give a sense of timescale, put a bar at the bottom of the screen representing 1 second so we can see just how slow it moves when you hit 80000 FPS.

Edit: Y'all acting like it's a frag grenade filled with napalm. Those graphite shards aren't sharp enough or moving fast enough to penetrate the suit. Any that do come in contact will be in contact only briefly.

@@moos5221it’s actually really fascinating. Try it next time you’re at the beach. It’s quite hard to put into words but you can see the sand go from a hard lump to something very fluid-like.

Now that's interesting. The welding helmet auto darkens when it detects ultra violet. When water cavitates it releases ultra violet. Does that mean that causing the water to boil rapidly with the salt also means it emits ultra violet? Would be interesting to use a lens/camera that detects UV and redo. Hmmmm. It reflects ultra violet light, it doesn't produce it.
Cavitation can be a high energy situation, some shrimp click their claws fast enough that the cavitation bubble is briefly hotter than the sun's surface. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a photonic event from that rapid event with the salt@@samuelgarrod8327

Hey guys, y'all prolly won't see this but Gav I just wanted to say as a guy who normally -hates- when fake sound is added to videos (especially old war footage, but I digress) - you are a master of making logical sound choices that definitely enhance the experience rather than taking one out of it. It's nice to not get irritated by something so major as sound yet so minor as slow mo/added sound. I know it ain't easy (but I bet it is a helluva lot easier than it used to be with all these years of practice!) Love ya guys.

That reaction happens so insanely fast. Specifically when the second crucible exploded. The cameras barely slowed that down at all. Even at 85,000fps, the explosion was still instantaneous!
Bet the same volume but of pure molten sodium in water would be an insanely more intense explosion.

why? plenty of gun vids have shown propane tanks shot and punctured with no explosion - only the rapid release of gas

In the entire history of this channel, I think this is the one where Dan was in the most danger. That exploding, molten crucible could have caused some serious damage, even with the protective gear.
