Came across this channel. One of the best aviation channels I’ve seen. Especially for Colorado mountain flying. Looks like the content has stopped, which is a shame because these videos are really well done, especially this one. Wow.
I'm still busy cleaning my jaw up off the floor from the beautiful takeoff footage with peak foliage. Stunning views, gorgeous plane, and top notch commentary as always. Thanks for all the work you put into these videos, it's really appreciated!
I’m more inspired by you and what you do than anything I watch on RUclips. What a pleasure and thank you for taking time to capture this footage and get it out to us. Your knowledge and experience for this type of flying is second to no one.
That really means a lot Dr. Bruce Lee. Thanks for letting me know. It does take a lot of time/effort to put these together but comments like yours make it all worth it.
Another great Mooney video. Al & Art would be pleased. The segment shot as you go by in ground effect and initiate your climb captures the rush we Mooney pilot's are hooked on. The adrenaline after pegging the gear to the floor is something only we share.
Enjoyed flying my father's '66 M20C when I was a kid. Logged 4-500 hrs in it and used it for my commercial flight test. Just turned 67 and still flying Mooney.
That camera angle really does a good job showing just how much the front gear bounces while taxiing on a soft field. Beautiful scenery, thanks for sharing
Paul, thanks for letting me know. I’m really glad Andrea found my channel after your incident and put us in touch. Let me know if you have any interest in telling your story on the channel. Could make for an interesting follow-up video...
You've managed to capture something really special in such a short video. WWII wra Warbirds have always been my favorite type of flying machines. The metal bodies and retractable gear made them look so sleek and fast, even when on the ground. Naturally, the retractable gear and sleek lines of the M20 are why I was drawn to this particular airplane. So I managed to stumble upon your channel while diving down the M20 RUclips rabbit hole. Just seeing your low and fast fly out on your departure reminded me of why I fell in love with Aviation in the first place. Thanks again for helping ignite that passion for Aviation in my life. I just booked my Discovery Flight, I'm really eager to get moving finally towards my dream!
Thanks for the nice note Roy. Glad you found the channel and I'm humbled that I could ignite your interest in flying again. Let me know how the Discovery Flight goes. Best of luck!
Bikes and planes, what a combo. Watched an F18 do a similar take off, retracted gear, stayed low then lit the afterburner and went vertical for 3000ft. Maybe not that similar.
While I respect your point of view, it didn’t work out for this video. I can’t record engine noise and cockpit audio - its one or the other. The outside camera is no help either, it just picks up wind noise. That makes for jarring transitions when you flip from one camera angle to the next. Nearly silent inside, a wind tunnel outside, nearly silent, a wind tunnel… you get the point. This is further emphasized when you realize that the 3 camera angles repeated over, and over, again. That type of audio playback is enough to make a grown man crazy. You’ll note, I kept the audio for the flyby. That worked great on top of the music. There’s a time and a place for raw engine noise. This video wasn’t it. Feel free to check out my other videos. The vast majority are just cockpit audio, no music.
I like how the different cameras showed your take off run, just as you described before doing it. I mentioned to you before, I lived near Aspen for 25+ years. One time I rode my honda dirt-bike from Marble up over Schofield pass, almost to the highway that goes to Crested Butte, then back to Marble. Some spots on that trail are tricky...jagged bare rock...steep and narrow with drop offs.
Thanks Mike. You’re one of the few who could actually appreciate where I rode. I went up Schofield pass, and finished with Lead King Loop. Such a beautiful spot.
As a student ppl, never was mentioned to try to minimize the wheelie on soft field takeoff to reduce some drag etc but definitely be careful of a tail-strike. Then again, learning to do this is very overwhelming in the first place! One thing at a time. Also, awesome how low you were in the ground effect! In the c172 I’m pushing nose down and steady at probably at 30’ and I have trouble wrapping my head around that!
Yeah, it's one of those things they probably didn't mention because you have enough to juggle just learning to fly. The PPL just grazes the surface and should be considered a license to continue learning :)
Right on Calvin, The trees were pretty close to the wingtips too. That also makes them really rush by. Some parts of the strip are only about 50ft wide. Trees on both sides…
Thanks John. The mixture was leaned to 12 gph for takeoff. A full rich mixture at that altitude would have been >14.5 gph. What you saw right before takeoff was me enriching the mixture from my VERY LEAN taxi setting. Had I advanced the throttle from that setting without enriching the engine would sputter and possibly die.
Hi Ronald, thanks for checking in. Life's been good. I'm sorry for the lack of videos but I've been spending most of my free time with the little guy rather than editing. Thankfully my family wasn't impacted by the fires. My heart goes out to the thousands of families who lost everything.
I don't personally. I like to feel how much back pressure I'm pulling on the takeoff roll. In the Marble takeoff video I actually had to push forward pressure as I was accelerating in ground effect. So you don't have to pull back for long.
Thanks Captndarty! The owners are extremely accommodating to airplanes, and airplane camping. I’m not so sure about bikes? I included a link to the RAF Airfield Guide in the description of the video. That has much of the information you’ll need including a waiver to sign if you decide to fly in.
That was intentional. I established a nose-high attitude to retract the gear, as soon as I had it stowed, I nudged the nose down to stay in ground effect. It definitely gets your heart pumping doing retractions that close to the ground.
@@ManandaMooney That makes sense, thanks for the response. Is the nose-high attitude when retracting the gear to avoid any runway debris from interfering with the retraction? I guess once the gear is retracted, the lower drag should allow you to accelerate quicker and climb out of ground effect faster than if the gear was still out?
@@FallLineJP It's far simpler than that...The nose-high attitude is to prevent me from making ground contact during gear retraction. Typically you establish "positive rate" (a climb) before retracting the landing gear. In the case of my Marble takeoff, I wanted to get the gear up as quickly as possible to help me accelerate.. Once the gear is up, the plane accelerates much faster, and also generates more lift. As I continued to accelerate I actually had to push forward on the yoke to keep the plane in ground effect.
Ground roll was approximately 1,500ft. I flew another 1,000ft or so in ground effect while accelerating. DA was 9,500. Mooneys do alright in grass if you keep them light. I can’t emphasize that enough. For this particular takeoff it was me, the bike, and about 25 gallons of fuel. That’s it.
Thanks for looking out! No, that’s actually my ADSB-in receiver. I’m just climbing high enough for it to start picking up a tower signal - hence the orange flashing.
Thanks Escape with Bob, A fellow pilot recorded the takeoff and was kind enough to send it to me afterwards. It was neat to see it from a 3rd person perspective - I rarely have that luxury.

Absolutely loved the camera views and the pull up from both inside and outside. Replayed the departure over and over.
Thank you 897firefly, This was a fun one to edit. I found myself doing the same thing :)
Great job. I enjoy your videos very much. I am the pilot of the M20J that was the subject of your "mountain emergency" video of Nov 9, 2019.

Those trees screaming by on takeoff really shows the effect of DA on your groundspeed up there at 7800' MSL. Those colors are epic too.

Do you use more trim than a usual take off to protect the nose on a soft field? I am preparing to take my m20C on some grass soon. Love your videos.

@@ManandaMooney nice! Great idea mounting the holder to the 2x4! I have a 1967 M20F so that should work just fine for me ...!

Better planes for that. I’d buy a small jet if you want to land on grass so you can get up high fast above the terrain

After the gear is retracted it looks like the plane actually dips a little bit lower. Was that intentional? Looked quite scary there for a second. 😱
