Man and a Mooney
США
Добавлен 10 дек 2018
Welcome to Man and a Mooney! “Christian” started this channel to share his flying experiences and encourage the next generation of aviators to take flight. “Marj” the Mooney is a 1964 M20C. She’s powered by a naturally aspirated Lycoming O-360 producing 180hp - although we rarely see all those ponies in the Rockies ;)
Join us as we explore Colorado (and beyond) discussing topics like mountain flying, cross-country flight planning, and overall aircraft ownership. “Welcome aboard” we’re glad you’re here.

Oshkosh 2021
Welcome to airplane Mecca - Oshkosh, WI. Schuyler and I fly the Mooney into one of the greatest (if not THE greatest) Aviation celebrations on the planet…
Our first visit to OSH didn’t disappoint. After being blessed with a perfect arrival window we’re met with a challenging (and confusing) landing clearance.
Come along for the ride and experience the wonder of OSH for yourself. Hope you enjoy!

How To: Aircraft Detailing
Просмотров 25 тыс.2 года назад
In this video, the Mooney gets polished and ceramic coated by AlphaJet Aircraft Detailers. While I try to keep my plane hangared and clean, the paint really needed a good polish. The added benefit of ceramic coating will protect the paint for years to come and make it easier to clean in the future. If your plane lives outside, this is a must! While I take a fairly hands-on approach to aircraft ...
Backcountry Takeoff in a Mooney
Просмотров 11 тыс.3 года назад
Welcome to beautiful Marble, Colorado! After taking in the fall color on my bike it’s time to depart the area and head home. ln this video I’ll demonstrate a soft-field takeoff in the Mooney. Soft-fields present a number of challenges for a Mooney - The rubber disks don’t aid in a lot of shock absorption, the prop has limited clearance, and the laminar flow wing isn’t exactly known for it’s sho...
Fall in Colorado - Aerial Leaf Peeping
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.3 года назад
Fall is in the air and that means favorable flying conditions for the Rocky Mountains. As I mentioned last year, Fall is one of the best times to fly in Colorado. The winds aloft are generally light, the temps are cool (lower density altitude), and VFR conditions prevail. Speaking of VFR, while I always fly VFR in the mountains, I’m usually traveling from point A to B. Translation: flying high,...
Flying a Mountain Bike to Telluride, Colorado
Просмотров 2 тыс.3 года назад
In this video I’ll show you how to fit a very large mountain bike into a very small airplane. After that, we’ll fly to Telluride to enjoy a day of mountain biking in one of the most striking places on earth. I love having the rear seat out of the Mooney in the summer for these kind of adventures. For those interested, I was biking Black Bear Pass. It’s an iconic 4x4 trail connecting Ouray and T...
How To: Remove Your Rear Seat
Просмотров 6 тыс.3 года назад
In this video I show you one of the more versatile aspects of owning a Mooney - the ability to remove the rear seat. Removing the rear seat from a Mooney unlocks many possibilities for hauling. Be warned, it could also carry legal implications so please do your homework before removing the rear seat in your own airplane. Steamboat (KSBS) via Trail Ridge Road (Rocky Mountain National Park)
Просмотров 3,2 тыс.3 года назад
In this video I introduce you to one of my favorite destinations - Steamboat Springs, CO. While I often favor crossing the Divide at Rollins Pass, for this flight we switch things up with an alternate route: Milner Pass (Trail Ridge Road). En route we discuss many of the nuances of this route and the preferred pattern entry into Steamboat. We finish things off with a firm arrival at KSBS. While...
Quick Update: New Prop, Oshkosh, and more
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.3 года назад
It’s been a while… here’s why: I purchased a new prop for the Mooney. She’s finally back in the air after a 4 month hiatus. I’ll plan to detail how I arrived at this new STC, the options I weighed, and the performance benefits I gained (if any) so keep an eye out for that. Additionally, I have plans to attend Oshkosh this year. I’d love to hear who else will be there.
How To: The 50/70 Rule
Просмотров 12 тыс.3 года назад
In this video I share a tip that has served me well - the 50/70 rule. One of the initial problems I faced flying my Mooney in Colorado was the lack of high altitude performance charts. My POH only referenced takeoff figures up to 5,000 ft. Aircraft performance numbers stopped entirely at 15,000. Now, after hundreds of hours of flying in the mountains at high altitude I’ve effectively filled in ...
Glenwood Springs and Marble, Colorado

In this video we pay a visit to Glenwood Springs, Colorado. In 2013, AOPA ranked Glenwood Springs as the "#1 Most Challenging Airport” in the US based on a survey of AOPA members (link below). While Glenwood has the potential to be very challenging, it was docile for our visit. This emphasizes what I continue to say in my videos, mountain flying is possible if you wait for the right conditions....
How To: Engine Leaning and Supplemental Oxygen
Просмотров 7 тыс.4 года назад
This is a requested video by some of my viewers. I've had lots of questions on my use of supplemental oxygen, and how to properly lean an engine at altitude. While the use of O2 is pretty straightforward, there's not a one-size-fits-all solution to engine management. In this video I discuss the many differing methods and opinions around engine leaning and conclude with my own. I find that some ...
Leadville, Colorado - 9,934 feet MSL

Join us on this trip to Leadville, Colorado - the highest airport in North America. During this flight we’re treated with exceptionally calm winds aloft and almost no turbulence. To cap off our smooth flight we land on a recently resurfaced runway at the top of the world. Pilots who navigate to Leadville Colorado typically receive a certificate upon landing. Full disclosure: the FBO was closed ...

Are you still in Colorado?
I am, but the Mooney isn’t
@ copy I’m in aspen area and looking to buy my first plane while I get my license. In online ground school. Just thought if you were flying around and wanted company it would be good learning. I like your videos. Give me a shout if you’re ever in the area
Floating along in ground effect until the stall horn is blaring is certainly a great idea when you have a mile of runway ahead of you. I have owned three Mooneys and on a 1200 foot strip you don't have such a luxury. Final approach speed is critical to keep the landing short. Bleeding off excess speed in an extended float is just a correction for approaching too fast. If you know your plane, you should be down and stopped in a total of 800 feet or less. I was trained by a Mooney factory test pilot and he passed on a secret that requires some coordination, not to be tried by rookies. If you are hot and floating, you have to be right up on the controls and then dump the flaps. You MUST be ready because you are coming down. Attitude control is paramount., but if the remaining runway is running away, you have to get the wheels down. DO NOT do this if you are not a very competent Mooney pilot. You can try it at altitude a few times before you do it over the ground.. Most importantly, know you approach speed accurately. If you hear the stall horn over the fence, you will get down without sightseeing the airport before touchdown.
I just wanted to leave a comment saying how much I love to rewatch you videos. They’ve got gorgeous views of my home state, a relaxed feel to them, and an emphasis on adventure I feel is missing from so many GA videos. Hope you’re doing well.
nice likes here ty
density altitude is key
Been there training 1980's ty great video :)
Nice Landing / Airspeed Is King
Had no problem learning to land my Mooney since I once owned a Beech Sundowner which has the same rubber pucks for gear shocks.
Awesome edit! Great angles and cool someone shot the 3rd person for you! I live in Gunnison, and Fall is the best time of the year! Hope to see you posting again soon!
Good job!
Excellent presentation!
It is very easy to land any Mooney... - they are perfectly easy to contol, just fly by the numbers! :-)
Is that a factory original paint scheme for a 1964 Mooney M20C?
How to land a Mooney: have $100k

I'm a pilot living in Longmont, but waaaay out of currency and proficiency. It's great to see your trips up into the mountains from LMO. I'm curious about your gear indication lights. The right main was showing red on your approach into Aspen. Is that an abnormality? Also, what a relief that the forced landing was successful for the other pilot!
Keen eye. That’s actually an Appareo Stratus (ADSB receiver), not a gear indicator. As you fly lower in the mountains you’ll struggle to receive ADSB-in signals - as indicated by those changing lights.
@@ManandaMooney ahh, thanks for the clarification. I haven't really flown since the pre-ADSB days, but will be getting back into it soon. Good to know!
Defiantly keep the videos coming love your stuff!
That service for a small plane starts at $6000
What?!?!? 😮
Still cheaper than a new paint job/plane
Came across this channel. One of the best aviation channels I’ve seen. Especially for Colorado mountain flying. Looks like the content has stopped, which is a shame because these videos are really well done, especially this one. Wow.
I lived at the east end of the Marble strip forty years ago. The owner of the strip at that time flew a Mooney in and camped at the group of trees next to the river. Great place....except for tourist in summer and snow in winter. LOL
Just subbed.. hope you start to post again.
Ah, my favorite airplane - an early Mooney with manual gear. Back in the day I flew one coast to coast several times, all over East of the Mississippi and even to the Caribbean a few times.
You should come back when you get a chance. You're videos are inspiring. I have a mooney M20F I hope to do some of the same stuff.
Great video! Thank you for making and posting it!
Awesome video
Is it really different aircraft detailing and car detailing? I honestly feel it’s weird and stupid question but I’m really curious about that… And I’m pretty sure it actually is, so if it is, what are the differences? Thank you 🙏
You need to do a video on flying a Gyro copter in the mountains
I fly 4 all the time. But I want to do a back seat setup so I can hold 3 people and 3 sets of golf clubs! So have the ability to lay one or both back seats down
Hi. How about to low the pressure in tires to match balance for take off and smooth landing where low pressure tires get first touch?
Great video and approach into KCOS. Thanks for sharing.
Question. What does wilderness have to do with where you can or can't fly? Seems like I see planes flying above wilderness all the time.
Pilots are requested (although not required) to maintain 2,000 ft. separation from Wilderness Areas. As I'm flying below the mountain tops in this video, I'm clearly not 2000 ft. above. Hence the reason I aimed to stay over the road.
What irks a Canadian pilot transiting down there are radio calls that don't use the airport name that is on the charts. In this case I'd be calling up Vance Brand; and I'm hearing pilots talking about Longmont and since I don't see Longmont airport on the VFR charts I'm thinking it is a common frequency also used in a completely different location, hence I don't have to worry about them. Recently flew into Hudson Valley Reg'al, KPOU, Poughkeepsie, NY... listening on the radio for any of those names. But the controller comes up identifying himself as Dutchess County. JEEZ. What gives down there, guys??
Mooney is not make for this.
Better planes for that. I’d buy a small jet if you want to land on grass so you can get up high fast above the terrain
This is what GA needs! Your common sense facts based approach is refreshing. No hyperbole no over focusing on one thing as if it’s the end all be all of any issue. You’re doing GA a huge service with your common sense approach and calm demeanor. All your videos are great! But as a flat lander I found this one to be so informative and educational on the subject of high density altitude flying. You demystified it. Thank you, God bless you and stay safe.
1:15 🤔😶😯🙂 👍😎👍 1:42 😂 Indescribably perfect, pilot to mountain biking site day. I had fun. Plus until now, I knew Telluride only as a song from a Spyro Gyra album (Freetime). Maybe I vaguely recall perhaps, legendary snow skiing? Gorgeous getaway, thanks for sharing.
Have a camera in front of you and on the winds looking in.
Show a map!
I have to ask, are you not comfortable in the seat? You seem to be constantly adjusting your seat position.
Can you spare us this awfull music ?
Can you spare us this ridiculous and awfull music ?
Good! Thx for sharing
Butter!
I own a Mooney M20B , thank you for such a good information. I appreciate you.
How much did that job cost? I'm thinking about starting an aircraft detailing business...
a ceramic detail can profit you a G or 2, i work as one for martin avaition, its just a small learning process and building clinentel thats takea while, best to work as one and learn from the inside out first
I grew up flying with my father. He owned two different Mooney an E model being the last. Out of Wichita he flew a 5 state area for business. Good times. 😊
Thanks for the video. Can you provide the waypoints used in your flight plan. I can’t make this work at 12,500 MSL. What am I missing.
The route is approximately "KLMO FOOOT RLG LINDZ KASE". If you have access to ForeFlight, turn off all your other map layers and turn on the "Hazard Advisor". Other than crossing the Divide at FOOOT, you could fly the whole thing at 9,500 ft.
literally clean
Just started my flight training at KAPA in Centennial, CO (Aspen Flight Club). I can’t wait to be able to fly in the mountains. Thank you for sharing!
I'm a low-lander so watching your left turn over Marble got my heart pumping just a bit! Not used to seeing mountains... let alone THAT close. Nice flying!
The three most important things for smooth landings are airspeed, airspeed, airspeed - great explanation.
YOU FLY A MOONEY THAT SLOW AND HIT A WIND SHEER YOU ARE NOSE DOWN AND IN THE GROUND !!!!
A stall is a stall. That's the primary reason we multiply VsO by 1.3 - for a safety net. If it's gusty, add a little more buffer. Far too many pilots believe that stalls occurs at a specific speed. It's all about load factor. You can quickly recover a stalling wing by unloading it - although I'd never encourage anyone to try that close to the ground.
