I'm a low-lander so watching your left turn over Marble got my heart pumping just a bit! Not used to seeing mountains... let alone THAT close. Nice flying!

Neat to see from the air. I drove the same route to Carbondale on 82, then west along Mt. Sopris and to Marble. We fished at a small lake outside Marble. I have been there several times, once 4 wheeling. We ate at a small restaurant in Marble. Later we did the 4 wheeling to an old historic Mill out of town. We also visited the Marble works, but they did not like visitors for some reason. Like we were going to steal a 5 ton block of marble or something. Some Italian sounding foreign guy asked us to leave. I love the Glenwood Hot Springs pool!
I lived near Aspen for 25 years. In spring of 2003, my 70+ year old neighbor took me flying in his 1949 Cessna 170, which he kept down at GWS airport. We took off and flew near Mount Sopris, barely clearing a ridge up there by 100 feet or less. Then buzzed over to Rifle, and up the river back to Glenwood. He taught me to navigate using power lines. A year or so after that flight, he overshot the runway on a north bound landing attempt into GWS, and landed on top of a house, a short distance past the airport. The airplane and house caught on fire, but were quickly extinguished, and he escaped with minor cuts, and was back at work two days later. That was the end of his flying career.
@@jwat072 Thank you for posting this news article. The person named is indeed the one I went flying with. Hi Bruce, the backseat in my Mooney is pretty tight. That said, I’ve comfortably flown with 3 adults many times. Thanks Zachary. There's been a lot of trial and error for the camera settings. I've settled on no ND filter, slightly overexposed, flat color profile, and high bitrate. I make all the other changes in post by crushing the highlights, bringing up the shadows, adding saturation and contrast back in, etc.
@@ManandaMooney wow, thanks. It’s amazing how much work can go into making just one video when you factor in all the post and trial and error. Thanks for the awesome content. Been really enjoying it,
t34bravo, whenever overflying wilderness areas, pilots are requested to maintain a minimum altitude of 2,000 feet above the surface. I was flying in the canyon so I clearly wasn't 2,000 ft. above the terrain. Flight above the road technically kept me out of the wilderness areas.
Gene, it has a Lycoming O-360 - that's a carbureted, naturally aspirated, 180hp engine. At 5,900 ft. DA (as was the case that day) the engine put out approximately 153hp on takeoff. A testament to the slippery design of the Mooney.
Grampa Badger, I agree that every airport presents its own unique challenges although Hayden and Silver West are fairly reserved compared to Marble and Glenwood. That's partly because I try to avoid flying on days when the winds in the mountains are >30 knots.
A fella I worked for 20 years ago almost killed his family at Glenwood. They were returning from St George Utah. The plane bounced a couple of times landing, then veered off the runway crashing thru a fence and into a stack of pipe. The pilot went on to get an instrument rating, and another airplane.
Yep, I tried to touch on that briefly J. Traffic favors landing north, and taking off south... obviously this isn't always an option. When taking off north, a left turnout to Rifle is preferred. When approaching from Junction, it's relatively easy to fly the left downwind for 32, or make a straight-in 14.

Been really enjoying it,
So, are you not allowed to fly over the wilderness areas or did you not overfly them just for safety's sake?
t34bravo, whenever overflying wilderness areas, pilots are requested to maintain a minimum altitude of 2,000 feet above the surface. I was flying in the canyon so I clearly wasn't 2,000 ft. above the terrain. Flight above the road technically kept me out of the wilderness areas.
What size engine is in the Mooney?
Gene, it has a Lycoming O-360 - that's a carbureted, naturally aspirated, 180hp engine. At 5,900 ft. DA (as was the case that day) the engine put out approximately 153hp on takeoff. A testament to the slippery design of the Mooney.
oh wow, i had my high school graduation on that glenwood runway!
That's awesome. Thanks for sharing Voin.
nutty i know, but would the private marble airfield be on Microsoft Flight Sim? If so, how would i find it? iD?
Unfortunately not. You'll find it on Google earth, but that's about it.
You would be surprised. They actually have a lot of small airfields. Look
It up on google earth and fly there and see.
Two different airports. Two different challenges. What about Hayden or Westcliffe? Seemingly flat terrain but spooky crosswinds and downdrafts.
Crazy story George. Glad everyone was alright.
Awesome channel man! I am up in Fort Collins if you ever need a co pilot/video man!
Thanks Shelby, I might take you up on that!
Beautiful.
Thank you G!
Most people clicked for the plane info, I came for the aerial view of my house lol
Ha, Glenwood or Marble?
@@ManandaMooney Glenwood, right under the flight path. You guys pass like 500 ft overhead, I'm about two miles south of end of the runway
Many more decisions to be made when approaching from Grand Junction, as are departures to the north out of Glenwood.
David Wartofsky appears at 3:30!
excellent
Thanks Alan!
Dig your channel. I've a request. I use to own a home at the north end of horsetooth resevoir. Back in 91 could ya buzz it for me?
Ha, we'll see if I can weave that into a future video. FYI: the "buzz" would be at 1000ft AGL or higher.
Slow Groovin' is a "must visit" spot when I visit family in Carbondale... and I know good barbecue, because I live in the barbecue capital of the world!
Agreed Christopher. You're definitely in the know.
Head to Johnson Creek... Or Mile High.
Yup...but not in your Mooney.
I could easily do Johnson Creek. That's actually on my list of places to visit... Mile Hi? No way José!
@@ManandaMooney I was kidding about mile high...
Ooh so you’re the plane we see flying around all the time 😂😂
Rose, that was my first time to Glenwood and Marble... if you're talking about Longmont, then I'm guilty as charged ;)
Home airport 🙌🙌🙌
Sweeeet!
Great video, thanks!!! B.d.w . can you leave the mike alone!?! Keep them coming! From Montreal....
Thanks Bikes&Bees, believe me, I'm trying. I've suggested others make a drinking game out of if... if you dare.
Awesome
Thank you Ruben!
Glenwood 2021
Not quite sure what to make of that rally cry...
Looked like some life below zero stuff right doe
It's a beautiful place if you ever get the chance to visit.
You should fly into ksbs. Steamboat Springs. That's a fun one. Make sure you don't go to khdn though, that's an easy one!
Schyler, I go to KSBS all the time... I even have footage of a couple flights to/from there. I just need time to sit down and edit it.
