I flew rented M20J’s and M20K’s for hundreds of hours back in the late 1980s. Fast and efficient, I flew them as far as Montreal and New York. Early in my flying, it was my dream airplane to own though, as it turned out, I never did own one. Thanks for featuring it. As for landing, if you fly it fast, a Mooney will float seemingly forever.
It's amazing how most landings in the M20 are three pointers or nearly so. I try to hold it off as long as possible, but you'll never get to that Cessna touchdown attitude. With that said, I land close to three points at times. You think you're flaring the hell out of it and the nose touches down a microsecond after the mains. I love my M20K 231. We average 9-11 GPH and 160kts true at 65% power. Al Mooney had it figured out. Love your videos Rich.
Wow! Bill Cox! A true legend! I remember the Wide World of Flying videos! I still have them in VHS! I also remember that aircraft and him flying it to review a new Bellanca Viking. Two older designs that have proven their resilience to this day! Great video and you “Nailed” that landing!👍🏾
Bill Cox is a legend, I still love his reviews from Wide World of Flying and magazines, he was fantastic. I would love a Mooney like that one and it sure would be cool to have his, I was hoping you’d say it was for sale!
I was in a five-member flying club that originally had an M20C (short cabin, 180 hp). We then bought a new M20F with one Narco Navcom for $20,000. What a difference that extra cabin length made for back seat passengers. A great and economical traveling machine. As I recall, it would cruise at 172 mph TAS on 10 gph.
Another great video, Rich....and an excellent landing with the way you bled the speed! Thank you. I really like Mooneys...they're an accessible light aircraft for those with reduced mobility.
Man...Bill was one of my favorite aviation writers...i envy the time you had knowing and flying with him...thanks Rich and merry Christmas to you and yours
i had my Mooney for ten years and logged over 1000 hours. just fly the aircraft by the numbers and you will be fine. Not a hard aircraft to land, Just find a good Mooney flight instructor and you will be fine.
That old push to talk button on the pilots yoke caused an instant flashback!! The 150’s that I learned to fly in back in the late 90’s all had those velcroed on push to talks. Those airplanes were OLD and BEAT UP but they sure were fun!
Love the added history with the videos Rich, didn't know too much about the Mooneys, what an awesome plane for it's time and still today. Merry Christmas! 🎄🛩️
Mooney started the year I was born. When I was young I was always drawn to the back angle of the rudder, I thought that was so cool. LOL They just look so well built, I love the wood-look panel in that one. With the performance, it's no wonder Daher bought the design, that turned into their Tarbes Mooney project, or TBM. Every time I see a TBM I see a Mooney in there. LOL --gary
Love Mooney’s, my Vintage M20E is very fun to fly! N9165V looks like it has the original Dukes landing gear actuator gearing with the AD. Also, the nose landing gear truss pivot bushings and steering bushing look like they may benefit from reaming and over sized replacements (LASAR has a kit). The steering horns are hard to find these days, but VARMA may help with that. Enjoy the airplane! If you are a vintage airplane owner I encourage you to pursue your A&P certificate. Maintenance costs on these special airplanes will negate the benefits of their inherent efficiency unless you can do more than the 12 things the FAA allows pilots to do. Labor is ~$200 hr and the number of A&Ps working in GA who have insurance, pay taxes, and know what they are doing is rapidly shrinking.
We’re a part 145 Repair Station in Southern CA, and our labor rate is $145/hr. Seems like we maintain a few early Mooney’s and they are doing quite well. Thanks for watching!
Always loved the look of the Mooney. Shame their not in production any more but i guess anything is possible. Happy christmas to you and your family. Thank you Rich
My friend had that plane but must have been 1 or 2 years earlier with just 2 windows and a manual stick landing gear. What I remember the most was flying it was fast and constantly wanting to climb and required effort to hold the nose down. Seemed fast for a plane with it's tail on backwards.. :)
Nobody asked about Bill? I grew up reading his articles and always thought how cool it would be to fly on those ferry flights with him and the things you would learn wow. I hope he is well and not selling because he is sick
I've got a '69 C based in SE Arizona and I love it. Great flying and efficient plane. I see that there is electric pitch trim in that one. I've not seen that in one of that vintage. STC?
When Mr. Piper wanted a design to compete with the Bonanza, he tried to buy the rights to the Mooney M20. Al refused, so Piper hired him to design the Comanche. The two designs have a lot in common.
1967-1976 for the F model. With realistically two major production runs(67-69/74-76) when Mooney ownership changed hands. It's essentially a pre speed mod J 201. (Love my 75F). Turbo Acclaim was and still is fastest. single engine certified piston. airplane at 252ktas. Prop clearance is the same as an archer
I really like the style of the interior with that white leather, and red instrument panel. It’s pretty snug so I think it would be a very nice airplane to wear, like a good pair of Italian shoes. I noticed what appeared to be speed brakes on the wings, but you did such a good job managing your energy on landing that you didn’t need to use them. The front looked like it had Lopresti speed mods for the air inlets, which look really cool ,too. Was that windscreen original or was that also an aerodynamic mod because it looked like it’s slope angle was a little steeper? Thanks for the cool video. Merry Christmas.
@@FlyingwithRich Oh and I have some of those VHS tapes too. The best one with the Cheyenne 400LS time to climb record with Chuck Yeager! God I love that airplane! If you ever get a chance to do a flight test with one of those, PLEASE make a video of that. 😁👍
With the recent Mooney crash in Florida is it true what they say that it’s common for Mooney’s baggage door to come off during flight or the door to open?
It can come off because it's not faired into the wind, but they only pop open if you forget to shut the door. And you only crash with the door open if you get distracted and get to slow
Just try to be +3 kts on short final and bleed the energy off over the numbers and just hold it off, hold it, hold it and she'll settle nicely. Speed brakes on this one, aftermarket option for early birds pre 1994 I think.
Well all be damned, I’m thinking he still owned in till now he had another plane I think it was a Bellanca Cruisair I watch him back in the 80’s when I was kid I’d watch those over and over.
Ok, then I was right the first time, 1969s and later, all moneys had fixed steps. Sorry you don't like the G. My most recent plane was an E that I sold in Oct, and I miss it. I had the electric step conversion since I had an all glass cockpit. It was a fast plane but worthless back seat.
@@FlyingwithRich turns out it's both; apparently they changed the name at some point. Thanks for the video of a cool airplane, and the trip down memory lane!
I am the new owner of N9165V. What a an honor to see your new video. I shall cherish Bill Cox's personal magic carpet.
You’re a lucky owner, take good care of her!
Elwood - look forward to flying with you soon!

Happy Holiday Rich. I too was a big fan of Bill Cox's writing, especially his ferry articles.
I used to own a '69 M20F. What a beautiful plane. Thanks for posting.
Mooney's have always been in my top 5 list for single engine performance and speed with great fuel economy. Thanks for sharing Rich.
Thank you and Merry Christmas!
I’ve started my PPL journey inspired from watching channels like yours. I love the content. Thanks.
Awesome!
Perfect landing in the center of the runway. I really like that plane. I was able to fly it on several occasions. Very good video Rich.

Beautifully finished airplane! Merry Christmas Rich. 👍
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more relaxed pilot in a busy airspace in full control!
Great video, loved the story about Bill Cox, very interesting information. Merry Christmas, and soon a happy New Year.

Not a fan of the Mooney, but enjoyed the video with your great reflection of someone who played a big role in GA.

Perhaps I missed the entry on Wikipedia but I failed to see a write up of Mr Cox. Hopefully someone knowledgeable can add an entry for him.
Forgot about the speed brakes Rich. Maybe this flight will inspire you to give Bill a call and say hi.

How do you attach the cameras to the exterior of the plane?
Our mechanics do it - screw mounts or we don’t do it.
Had I known the pedigree🙄 I loved it because it's the LoPresti cowl.

Why is the step hanging down?
Maybe the vacuum diaphragm in the aft bay is worn out
