This video is about the install of an OEM grille i purchased for my 2000 Mercedes Benz R129 SL600. According to the Mercedes production numbers only 286 of the SL600 cars were produced in 2000. How not to land Mooney M20 runway 5 Groton CT.
Просмотров 24 тыс.2 года назад
This video is about how I missed a touchdown mark on runway 5 at Groton airport KGON. The plan is to land on runway 5 at the 1000 ft fixed distance marker and under normal braking make the left turn on taxiway delta about 700 feet ahead. Creating a scenario like this helps keep me ahead of the airplane. However, it may not workout as planned, so do it again at another airport. See the results...

    Honestly, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time watching this. I really didn't think the Mooney was going to make it, especially when it hit that clump of grass toward the end. No doubt the pilot got out and kissed the ground afterwards. They need to make a movie about this! Oh wait, you already did.

    I have a 1974 F with the exact same panel layout and throttle quadrant, etc. You do exactly what I do after pulling power and I've heard the shamers saying something like "That is bad technique to take your hand off the throttle." As soon as I pull the power, my right hand comes to the yoke because I do not have the exacting authority I need without both hands. I've tried to do it as I have always done it in a small Piper or Cessna, but its too much. Even trimmed correctly on short final, I find the Mooney heavy once power is pulled and in the round out then flare and find I can do a much better job with both hands. I bench 275 and can curl 100, so I'm not a weakling. Although we have the nay-sayers, I've tested many times and if I need to go around that right hand is quick to the throttle so not a problem. What's your reason for using both hands for the round out and flare?

My planned touchdown landing zone was approximately 50 feet. i should have explained more clearly what i was doing here during the landing phase.

    Nice job, and a beautiful car. The grille most likely came from a V-8 SL500, as they are far, far more common than the V-12 SL600. The grilles are the same of course, so it doesn't matter.

I checked a website called www.howmanyleft.co.uk/ and it shows very little remaining in the UK. Why do you reduce RPM and manifold pressure when in climb? The idea is to get as far away from the earth as quickly as possible in case of emergency. The engine is rated for continuous operation at full throttle and 2700 RPM. I know my POH recommends reducing RPM to 2550-2600 right after takeoff (I assume yours is similar), but I find this to be bad advice. Plus, this recommendation is removed from later POH's with the same engine/prop.

    • @bigalsplanesimplegarage4288
      @bigalsplanesimplegarage4288 2 года назад

      I understand what you are saying about reduction in power and manifold pressure. The POH for my Mooney recommends this setting for all normal climbs so that is what i follow. I have put 1100 hours on the engine so far, compression is still at 77/80 in each cylinder and the recommendation from my mechanic durning annual inspection is keep doing what i am doing.. anyway, thanks for your comment.
