How not to land Mooney M20 runway 5 Groton CT.

- This video is about how I missed a touchdown mark on runway 5 at Groton airport KGON. The plan is to land on runway 5 at the 1000 ft fixed distance marker and under normal braking make the left turn on taxiway delta about 700 feet ahead. Creating a scenario like this helps keep me ahead of the airplane. However, it may not workout as planned, so do it again at another airport. See the results...
looked like a solid landing to me. I appreciate that you audibly say you're ready for a go-around on short final; takes away the surprise factor, helps you stay calmer
It happens to the best of us. I feel like every good pilot will work on improving their landings for the rest of their lives or careers in the cockpit. And it takes a great pilot to admit their mistakes.
Beautiful plane btw.
Nice 👍 I’m in the process of restoring mine. Just bought a 1968 Mooney M20C.
I’ve seen a lot worse.
I stopped trying to make taxiways years ago. It’s a lot easier on brakes, props (I don’t use reverse) and passengers.
Man that panel is beautiful!
Nothing to be ashamed of. We strive for perfection & all fall short. Approach should be stable...looked like several throttle (up) changes on final. Practice is what we all need.
Good morning to all from SE Louisiana 26 Jul 22.
Looked like a great landing from where i’m sittin!! Touching down in the first 1000 ft on a long runway, what could be wrong with that?
It happens…
Thanks for your comment.
I heard Harrison Ford say he liked flying for the same reason he liked stage acting, you have a chance to perform a little bit better each time.
It was a good landing. You walked away from it.
Nice plane, what do you do with that ADF? I wasn't sorry to pull mine out, it holds down reams of paper in a strong wind. :D
The ol' Mooney float. . . .
I have a 1974 F with the exact same panel layout and throttle quadrant, etc. You do exactly what I do after pulling power and I've heard the shamers saying something like "That is bad technique to take your hand off the throttle." As soon as I pull the power, my right hand comes to the yoke because I do not have the exacting authority I need without both hands. I've tried to do it as I have always done it in a small Piper or Cessna, but its too much. Even trimmed correctly on short final, I find the Mooney heavy once power is pulled and in the round out then flare and find I can do a much better job with both hands. I bench 275 and can curl 100, so I'm not a weakling. Although we have the nay-sayers, I've tested many times and if I need to go around that right hand is quick to the throttle so not a problem. What's your reason for using both hands for the round out and flare?
i am happy to hear that another Mooney pilot dose the same thing i do during the round out. I must of pick it up from anther Mooney pilot years ago. Fly safe..thanks for your comment
@@bigalsplanesimplegarage4288 Hey Big Al I would love to hook up with you some time soon. If things go well I will be the owner of a Mooney in 2 days. I will be flying out of WST but rent from Coastal at GON. I have much to learn, so if you ever want a second seat filler let me know.
@@afdchocolatemilk2107 excellent choice which model did you purchase? How much time do you have in a Mooney?
@@bigalsplanesimplegarage4288 hopefully sign tomorrow on a 1965 M20C with 0 time PIC or second seat. I have a CFI flying it back with me so I can get my complex endorsement. Have flown mostly piper 180's and cessna 172's.
@@afdchocolatemilk2107 very cool, let me know when you get it home.
Whattya mean, "how not to...?". That was respectable enough.
A gust of gravity hit him
So what ? Seems good..
Pretty sure I saw this happen from bluff point lol
Ah…what’s wrong with the landing?
Stick it on the numbers and you wont have a problem lol
What the heck was wrong with that? And by the way, I’ve never been paid extra for making a taxiway. Ha.
Hmmmm..... good landing. Someone moved the taxiway!
