Very interesting analysis and quite revealing.
I have moved from the M2 2016 to the M4 hzrdus smoke and saw a significant improvement in distance and accuracy.
As everyone has commented on the deviation in results is minimal,…which reaffirms the concept of “feel” in determining driver selection.

M2= legend status confirmed! For how cheap you can pick those up, this video was great for shopping purposes. M2 with a premium shaft....

Got a whole set of these in a Ghost golf bag. Minus a putter. It’s a Bobby Grace. Got them direct from Japan. I suck. But they are awesome.

Thanks for the comment, Chris! We plan on doing some fairway wood tests like you're referring to in the future. We do have a few 1-on-1 tests between a couple different models.
Personal look, feel and performance is in the eye of the beholder, whats works great for one may not for the other, the 2016 M2 is still the best value or distance for the money spent.
The 2016 M2 is definitely one of the best values out there!

You say that you normally use a 9 deg driver. How would that have affected these results?
Can we get a TaylorMade r 540 driver with a upgraded newer shaft and possibly the R580 test done against the newest TaylorMade drivers out the last 3 years.

Great video, and always impressive to see you hit it so well. I am just surprised you don't use premium golf balls like Pro v1 or TP5. You hit it very straight so you could just go to the 300 mark and collect them after :) Range balls is not really the way to test clubs.
Thanks for watching and commenting! You're right, range balls are not ideal. We did utilize the normalization button on Trackman to account for that. However, we are going to see about just using a few of Thomas' gamer golf balls and retrieving them for our next test.
There are many guys on the Senior Tour that don't have club deals that are still playing the 2016 M2 - and you can see why. I have one in a backup bag in a slightly shorter 44.25" playing length and it is such a goto 5-yard fade club that I will never get rid of it. I also like that it's pre-Twistface so that you know you can play a draw with the Toe and it will come back. I do think the new Sim (not Max), with the weight in the Toe, makes for a worthy successor to the 2016 M2 if you are looking to play a power fade.

Hi I have the TM Original One and its got twist face, yes its higher loft but I can turn it right to left quite consistently... great fairway finder.
Need to make this kind of test with the same shaft... shaft may had improved more than the head?
Thanks for watching the video. For all driver heads we used the exact same golf shaft and same length. Shaft used was the graphite design XC 6X

Any reason the m3 was left out?
Anyone who owned a 2016 M2 could have spent around £2K on upgrading and gained about nine tenths of not very much. Interesting how the number move around a little from one model to another on spin but overall not much has changed when you factor in all the marketing we are sold. Great review.

Interesting. As I wait to decide on my final driver - thanks to covid- IE the pxg second gen (new prototype not in left hand) with a customised shaft (fujikura ventus blue counterbalanced) and as it's price drops considerably - this one gave me the best performance and consistency; I have been trying and testing and using several others from ping g400 to various tm's to titliest ts2 et al. Surprisingly I picked up an m2 for £100 and it has worked the best of these including the later tm's. Did not like the look of the sim or similar mad bulkiness so have not tried out except in a testing bay briefly. Certainly nothing came close to the pxg with the custom shaft but just say the M2 was so good in terms of reliability that I am happy to lose some yards for that also as it inspires confidence. And for the price can't be beat! If you are a senior with a slightly slower swing speed the M2 driver is a perfect option to consider for such a price. Still hope to get the pxg combo at some point as I liked the sound and feel the best and have me the greatest consistency and best distance to boot but I think it was equally to do with a shaft that worked well and suited me- though there is a significant mark up for that. Trade offs!!
How can I get my hands on a new M2 2016? Taylormade not selling on the website... Is used on eBay my only option?

I had m6 changed to sim 2 was going to get stealth 2 but the face pops off and can break ,sim 2 or stealth 1 not 2
Basically nothing in it. Im not sold on twist face..as I find my face also twists with my M4 dispersion. I think the SIM looks the best followed by M6.

I used to have m6 didn't like it at all. I have a taylor made r5 driver still. It's far and away the best driver I ever hit. I love the sound that comes off it when you hit it in the middle it still booms 👊

M6 has the lowest spin rate. M4 has the lowest dispersion. 2016 M2 is the most straight driver.

Were you using range balls?
Hi Dave, thanks for watching! Yes, Thomas was hitting range balls. We utilized the normalization button on Trackman to account for that the best we could. For the next test, we'll see if it's possible to hit a premium ball and then retrieve.
You have clearly demonstrated that there is no reason in the world for any consumer to go out and spend $500 for a next generation driver as all of the stats show statistically insignificant variances. A smart move for any golfer is to purchase a model several years old in great condition for 1/3 the price of a new model. Technology has reached the limit of what can be accomplished and still be a legal club. The 2016 M2 is better than them all and can be bought for a song. The advertising is pure hype for the new stuff and we all know it.
Mark feldman Exactly, this is why i bought a 2013 Lexus ES350 in April 2019 with only 30k. Miles for $18k. Original sticker price was nearly $45k in 2012 when the original owner bought it . I have the window sticker in my possession.. not an exact analogy but there is truth to not having to buy the newest, latest & greatest to achieve value and performance.. My ES350 now has only 37k miles and still drives and smells new..
Stephen DiBari spot on correct. Analogy is perfect. Buy a nice car that some guy leased for three years and drove 15-20,000 miles in that period. Get a luxury car at half price and generally get an extended warranty up to 100k miles thrown in. Taylormade under its old ownership came out with a new driver every 3 months making their other models crash in value. Have to be crazy to buy a new one. Note the statistical differences in all of the five drivers tested were essentially zero . Also note that these tests are being performed by guys with tour swing speeds . Amateur players would have even narrower differences at 80-100 mph swing speeds. Negligible gains ,if any, all at a huge cost.
Mark feldman in my case the Original owner took ownership in August 2012 and traded it in in early 2019. He may have leased it and then bought it out or simply financed it from day 1. Nevertheless the value is amazing. I never buy a new car, they’re a depreciating asset. Let someone else take the big hit w. Depreciation. As far as the drivers, I agree 5-6 yards aren’t going to make you lower your scores. 65% of your is played inside 100 -120 yards, of which 40-45% is putting. Yeah hitting a fairway is important but you need to get it on the green with as fewer strokes as possible

New technology is snake oil. Every manufacturer builds their drivers to the max C.O.R. allowed by the USGA. Five yards difference over 4 years of technological improvements? That is about a half a club on your second shot into the green. Match the shaft (cycles per minute) to your swing speed and there you go.
Thanks for watching and commenting! You are right about the USGA governing the COR, which limits the "pop" off the center of the clubface. That has forced manufacturers to work on improving other areas such as spin, stability, forgiveness, and aerodynamics. You can see the gradual improvement in our test -- it would likely be more noticeable with a higher-handicap player.

Ridicolous the increase in length within 4 Years. Instead of spending each year 400-600 dollars do some Overspeed-Training and you gain easily in just a few weeks 5-10 Miles Club head speed

Of course not! The technology is changed both internally and externally. Most notably over these models, TaylorMade introduced Twist Face and the Inertia Generator that have improved performance.
