In this video Rick Shiels PGA Golf Professional reviews the brand new TaylorMade Golf SIM driver & TaylorMade Golf SIM Max driver.

Hi Rick. Thanks for the great review as always. It seems to me that because of the design limitations imposed on manufacturers, that they have pretty much maxed out distance performance. Should we not be focusing more how forgiving they are compared to previous models (both distance and dispersion) as this is probably also more important for most average golfers?
No joke, you give some of the best reviews on youtube. I'm one of those that over research everything i buy and you are a must stop location for any golf equipment. I'm even able to look past the silly way you say "H" to get some great in depth and honest feedback on golf gear. You are one of the very, VERY few channels I subscribe to. Keep up the good work. thats why i collect the Pro V1's in my golf bag and golf with the garbage balls I find. One day I will be good enough to play with pro-v1's without losing 20 per day XD

I had an m2 yesterday my dad had an epic, Then my dads friend wanted to trade the epic for sim so now we got a sim and m2. But my dad gave me the sim and we sold the m2 and he bought a new epic flash.

They certainly aren't giving drivers away, but if you can't afford a 3 generation old driver then how do you afford to golf?
Guys, SIM stands for SIMilar to last year's and SIMilar to Cobra.
Or you can just SIMulate that its better.
At this price, it should come with a copy of SIM video game.

Rick always gives an honest, quantifiable, and thorough assessment of clubs done in a way that removes problematic variables. He shows us in a simulator under controlled conditions and even goes to the course to show us where the rubber meets the road. Best club evaluator on RUclips!
I liked seeing the difference with changing the weight location! Really interesting, hopefully we get to see similar testing with all the drivers this year!
Hi Rick ! I'm a french clubmaker who's been working with Tom WISHON for almost ten years. Tom actually invented the concept of sliding weights on a driver to enhance a fade or a draw in 1996. But he knew from testing (it takes about 18 months to create a new head design) that it requires at least 30 grams of weight on the sole to really change the shot shape. He went even further and created a weight of 40 grams that could REALLY promote a draw bias. BUT he had to come up with a 375cc clubhead since 40 grams was too heavy to create a volume of at least 440cc that the golfers were expecting. So his design (called 715CLC, you can google it) did not sell because of this small volume. And this is why ever since the driver heads he has developped do not have a sliding weight. It simply does not work with a 20ish grams that you can find today on some models. Best regards from Bordeaux, France !

Since it seems like the models from this year and maybe models from the past couple years don’t seem to have a huge difference in performance I’d love to see a video comparing the performance of a driver from maybe 10 years ago to today. For someone like me who has a model from 2007 and is thinking about upgrading. Thanks! 👍
Rick, I love your honesty! Of all the people on RUclips talking golf, you are the most unbiased with less BS👍. When you do a review, you tell us how the product affects you- your results . You don’t try to guess what club will fit different golfers. That is all fitting. Well Done!

I just purchased the SIM Max Driver and 3 Fairway based solely on their forgiveness. At almost 61 years of age, I know my days of launching the ball 285+ yards are over...just need to get it up in the air and keep it in play. Both of these clubs will help you do that!

Conspiracy time - TM and Callaway are both colluding to release ugly garbage drivers because they know drivers cant get any better, Add the sliding weights back in next year and call it improved. Golf is a joke now and I run a golf shop.
@@chadjackson4786 well considering it's been proven time and time again that older clubs can be hit just as far and consistent as brand new clubs, it's literally just a visual game now. Wether you like the club or not, I'm sure lots of people will still buy it. Not like taylormade is hurting for cash
@@chadjackson4786 I haven't changed my R9 Supertri because it looks too good and the new ones are so ugly, and I'm sure they perform amazing but man are they ugly. Looks like a transformers. There are better looking drivers out there but I have a weird thing about my woods being the same brand. I really thought they where going to bring it in 2020 but guess no. Also, if they could take away the ugly white parts and black them out, it'll improve by 1000. The mini driver is a good example of how they could look by blacking it out. The mini dirver looks very fine but not for a mid handicaper obviosuly.
I just bought these, coming from a 12 year old cobra and Taylor made burner I picked up 20 yards on the 3 wood and driver. I'm happy with them!
PSA: In the last 10 years Dustin Johnson has gained 4 yards of distance with his TaylorMade Driver (308 vs 312) Jason Day, another long time TMag staffer has also gained 4 yards in the last decade (298 vs 302).
Note that driving data is also influenced by improving player ability, ball technology, biomechanics and conditioning. Even if you wanted to put these gains solely down to driver technology the best case scenario is a gain of 36cm per year.
Guys, there are no distance improvements to be found in your wallets.
J P 100% of that comes from the TP5 ball. They're maxed out because of regulations. The new frontier is more consistent ball speed and spin across the face (aka forgiveness). There's been nothing to be gained on center strikes for almost a decade now.
That could have a lot of reasons.
Fitness... Ball... etc.
Christian Conrads Of course - I shouldn't have said 100%. My comment had more to do with the known fact that the TP5 & TP5x have been more successful at getting driver spin down so they're a few yards longer than the Pro V1, although the 2019 Pro V1 mostly closed this gap. I hit TM drivers for years (3 hdcp) and gained no distance since SLDR, but SLDR was the wildest driver I've ever owned.
I did an extensive fitting this year and there's no significant difference in ball speed among the top driver brands. It's all about fitting for head/shaft combo. A handful of them I hit like crap (looking at you TS3) but that's all personal. Ended up with F9 because I got amazing results with heavier weights at a shorter length but I could've done the same thing with TM or Callaway (but no reason to spend the extra money).
If you are buying a driver just to gain distance then you better be getting fitted. I have a 2003 Ping is380 driver that I hit 260-265. I have a 2013 Ping Anser that I hit 260-265. I have a TM M2 that I hit 260-265. The only difference between my 2003 Ping and my 2017 M2 is that I consistently hit it my max distance. The sweet spot is better across the face and it's more forgiving on mis hits. With today's drivers you are not buying distance, rather you are paying for consistency and forgiveness. Seems like those features are easily marketable.

Dane, make the effort to play a little golf and if it's the game for you it will be the most engaging game/sport you ever tried. Chidren to old men like me can play. I started playing at 72. Shame not to spending time in this world and not be savour the satifaction of a good, square, ball strike and watch your ball arcing across the sky.
Plus, most of us that love the game will go out of our to help you someone giving golfing a go to really enjoy playing thrmdelve. I get nearly as much of a buzz from occasionally making par as Tiger likely does for a hole in one. So, give it a try and enjoy.

I’ve done a few hours on a driving range but never played a single hole let alone a round, never owned a single club.

I am a single digit golfer who uses a TaylorMade Burner Driver that is about a dozen years old!! I’ve put it to test against the best every year, and keep saving money! The stats tell the tale! ... great spin rate and distance. The only slight difference is in dispersion data. Before you put down $500 plus, get properly fitted by an honest fitter and bring your old driver with you. You might save yourself some well-earned dollars! He’s absolutely right! A lot of it is marketing!

I had a taylormade R7 425 that I bought 14 years ago brand new. Loved that club. The sound and feel was great. Unfortunately my friend asked if he could try it off the tee during a round. (He's not very good btw) and he hit a shot so bad he dented the top of it. Was mad about it but I figured, what the heck, it served me well over the years. Time to buy a new one. Bought this today and after watching this review I can't wait to use it. I am a taylormade fan through and through. My irons, wedges, woods and putter are all taylormade. Love their products and am willing to pay a bit more. Typically wait until a year or two have passed after a new release so the price goes down but I couldn't wait with this one. :-)

Crazy how people keep saying this when it's not remotely accurate. There is almost a year between m5 and sim. They make new cars every year too, I wonder if it's a profit thing?
True, the tech is all max out on the head, the shaft is last frontier- I put a Fuji Ventus Black 6-s in the hand made Velus line ($350 ) into the M% demo paid $350. Trying snag SIM Max and move the shaft. By far, this shaft is most consistent and plenty long . This MOi is real, just means it resists twisting from off center

hit the m5 338 yards with m5 vs m3 but in another test hit m5 313 yard with m5 vs sim. I know we don’t hit it the same every day but 25 yards is unbelievable, btw he hit sim 335 yds. I guess they don’t think we can look at previous tests.

What I have learned from watching all of Rick's videos about new clubs is that, you shouldn't worry about replacing clubs until they are between six to seven years old. I'm still hitting a 2000's ping g5 and the Callaway epic is only about one yard longer and the Ping only set me back $40!
yup. finally upgraded to an M5 from a 913 D2
To me it looks a lot like the Cobra F9 on steroids with the “inertia generator “. I am currently gaming a second generation M1 and if I were to replace it I would look more to the Cobra mainly due to the price point.
Hey Robert... That's the exact move I made in November... 2017 M1 to Cobra F9... It's worth the $ for the upgrade just be sure to get fit for your shaft and weight settings.
What "Brian Robertson" said! I, too, went from M1 to the F9 and have zero regrets. Maybe it's just me but the F9 works for me in every way, and though I hit the M1 well at times, I just didn't get on with it as consistently as I'd have liked.
Given Rick's comparison of the F9 vs. Speedzone showing virtually NO performance differences, you could get your hands on a new F9 for half of a SIM. A no-brainer. Good luck!
So glad I found your channel. It's awesome to get an unbiased opinion on performance of Clubs cuz when you go shop for clubs the salespeople will feed you all kinds of crap about how much better some club claims to be. So having the knowledge of your reviews helps clear the noise away and make it easier to make an informed purchase

Daniel Álvaro Martínez Regal i gamed the m1 for a long time but I’m the summer i finally upgraded to the m5 with the rogue shaft. Major upgrade i have to say. I also believe that at some point after 100s if rounds and beating balls at the range there must be loss of performance.
Its so liberating to look at a quality review that is informative. Testing at the range, on the course and finally using a trackman in the studio. Keep up the good work and be as objektive as possible!

Nathan Sharrock I hit the sh*t out of my SLDR but I couldn't keep it on the course. This looks like they were trying to get SLDR performance in a more forgiving package.
Indeed, and has the same slide weight technology. Both ugly, SIM miles uglier.
To everyone saying it is a direct copy of the f9, did you not see the m6? I think it looks like a newer rendition of the m6 more so than an f9. Just my opinion. Still like the looks of the f9 more but let's be real, 90% percent of people dont even use the full potential of any new clubs. If you like the looks and it gets you on the course it's a winner in my book. Good luck this year and always love Rick's reviews.
Okay my first thought on the SIM driver was that it doesn’t look as good as previous models. But I have to admit that I really like the look oft the crown. Price wise they had to go down because of Cobras big success with the F9 and the success Cobra will have on the SZ. I’ll give it a hit anyway 🤪

Great review Rick. It just shows you that under current USGA rules drivers are already close to their maximum performance. Buying new drivers year after year is senseless even if money is no object. The best decision one can make is to get fitted with the proper shaft. That gives you the best chance to maximize your driver’s performance.

Yea. These videos go to to show that I believe a lot more people will be going to this design. Monkey see monkey do. I love my cobra F9 and i was so glad Rick did the SZ and showed there was no gained. Saved me close to 200.00 on buying a F9 at 349.00 and plus 25% off of that listed price. These videos are huge for us Rick. Thank you for yet another great video
@@DustinlsxzBrewster same here i love my f9 purchased 2 weeks ago after hitting the sz alongside it. I actually got more from the f9 which shows they are no distance gains at all these days it's all about looks and forgiveness but i will be keeping my f9 for a few more years yet.

Taylormade: Revolutionary shape. Cobra: we did that last year.
Actually M6 had similar to cobra speed back last year. The idea that they copied cobra is silly. SIM is an extension of the M6 shaping. But the asymmetric shape is certainly different than both cobra and the M6 driver

This driver is shaped alot like the Cobra speedback with that wedge piece on the bottom.
Great honest review - I am not a fan of changing club often, but recently driver from a Titleist 905R to a new Cobra and absolutely love the big difference in performance, sound, feel and adjusting options. Thanks

Great review! I have been hitting the M6 driver, the straightest drives I’ve ever hit. I was thinking of hitting the SIM, but not crazy about the visual of the club. Keep up the good work Rick, you provide the best transparent reviews on the internet bar non.

I’ll definitely just hang onto my M5, I also hit the SIM and saw no difference in club head speed. I actually hit the M5 straighter aswell 🤔
Yet more confirmation, if we needed that manufactures just keep re inventing the wheel. I use M6 so wont be changing. Does look great. What still amazes me is when you see a pro swing is from back swing to finish you don’t see anything it magically ends up at the finishing position. 120mph club head speed wow puts my 75-80 speed to shame. I actually hit the sim driver 10.5 degree and I love it I gained 15 yds and club head speed increased by 12 mph putting in the bag

This driver looks like the lovechild of the Cobra F9 and the old SLDR! I like the color scheme, but i don’t see this outperforming my F9. I’ll test it at a demo day and see what happens. Thanks for the review, Rick....great stuff as always!

I have a 2016 M2 driver. A few months ago I tested a Sim Max head against the M2 head, both with my existing shaft, using TrackMan at a club-fitter’s facility. Unfortunately I dont recall my clubhead speed, but average carry distance improved by 12 yards and dispersion was very significantly tighter. So even though changing from M5 to SIM may not be of benefit, stepping up from M2 most certainly is. Great review as always, Rick. Really enjoy all of your videos 👍👍

What I gathered from this is that someone who swings at pro-level speeds pretty much gained nothing; so I'm definitely not going to gain anything other than debt if I buy this. Great video Rick!

Picked up my SIM driver yesterday. Bloody incredible performance. I've never experienced as tight dispersion. Also get it for £420. Still dear expensive but if my driving improves over the season then I'm OK with the price

Rick I really enjoyed the format of your new videos breaking down each component of the driver, excellent job in more detail. That being said, seeing photos/videos of the new Taylormade SIM I feel it looks terrible from underneath. I will have to make my own opinion when I see one looking down at it when addressing the ball. You had said in the video that someone with a five-year-old plus driver may take advantage of the new technology in this driver, I currently use a RBZ 3W In place of a driver, have much more consistency and control with it. With all the innovations in travel technology in last few years it makes me want to try getting back into the traditional driver field again. Thanks for the great content.

I just got the sim a month ago and I’ve driven 2 par 4s that I have to carry water. 1 was 320 and the other 310. I’ve gained ball speed and distance from the m1 I was hitting. It’s the best driver I’ve ever hit. And it’s so consistent
