TaylorMade Drivers 2012-2020: Will Modern Tech Win?

- In today's video, I'll find out which TaylorMade driver head from 2012-2020 is longer! Randomly grabbing a head, I'll hit 2 with each driver in my current gamer shaft... longest carry wins! These are the driver heads I USED over that time frame, so I understand the M2, M4, & M6 aren't in the comparison (because I didn't use them so I don't have them)

Andrew Jensen I just filmed a review of the SIM! I love that club... only if I could afford it😂
YO YO bro thanks for teaming up with them. I just checked out for the 3.0 and all the goodies and total after taxes with your code 77$ bro. That’s sooooo awesome. Thanks MANSCAPED. I wish I could see the person that does my paperwork because I guarantee they are going to bust out laughing cause my “company name” it’s nothing offensive just funny and perfect for this item.
@@Snowskiracer haha that's awesome to hear brother!!
Andrew Jensen dude me and my boy mess with our wives and put the name of the business KING DINGALING haha especially when it’s something that has to be signed for. I do the same thing for my mother in law haha. So the people at man scapes are gonna see that lol. That’s gonna be funny.
Hi Andrew. If you recall, I’m the Montrealer who broke two arms a year and one half ago, and contacted you. I found the video very interesting and commented that I can’t find another driver to beat my TM Burner HT Senior Shaft! Maybe I shouldn’t have replaced the rest of my clubs last summer with M6?? I had them tweaked at Club Champion in Delray recently.
Modern tech wins - as long as you give it twice as many chances as the old tech!
I suspect if you hit 20 shots with each club, assuming your back would last that long, and averaged the results (discarding any obvious outliers) the result would be very similar across the years but that the later drivers had better dispersion
True
Same analysis here...
He only hit the SIM head again because his first two shots were so bad.
TM marketing department have their eyes and ears shut....this is not happening!!!!!!
I am here for the R1.. let's go buddy!
Same !
Still love my R1 but it is getting long in the teeth. Seems like the R15 from what ive seen takes the low spin of the SLDR into account and gets u about 6-10 more yds so that what im looking into maybe upgrading to. However in this test the R1 again wins.
R1 440cc V2 head.
@Johnny Appleseed Well, i was consistently getting 265-275+, i sold it and got the 2020 SIM MAX, that i can hit 285+ but its just a bit less consistent on the dispersion. It almost feels like im hitting an illegal club as the effort doesnt need to be put it. I get like zero roll out btw here in New Hampshire so I'm sure id be loving any coarse that has firm fairways.
@Johnny Appleseed honestly, I hit the r1 more consistently but I've gotten longer distance from the Sim Max. I sold the r1 for $110 and the Sim only cost $259 so I'm glad I upgraded. The Sim head is slightly oblong vs the r1 is more sirmetricle which I liked more. I will say the regular shaft worked better for me then the stiff in the max, ventus shafts r slightly stiffer so don't be afraid of regular shaft unless u swing super fast.
I love these comparison tests of older drivers , i am playing Jetspeed 460 and R 15 460 right now , love to see these included in you're tests ! Thanks !
And this was my first one… I’ve made newer ones every year since 👊🏼
That was so much fun, good seeing those heads against each other, always wondered why I changed the R1.. also had the SLDR, R15, M2, but living happily with the M6 still...
Great video man! Up until 2014 I was a mega Taylormade fan boy since I was very young and the R1 for me was my all time favourite! Great to see that one win it!
Great video...I subscribed. Keep the old club comparisons coming.
OMG, wanted to see the R11 as that is my current gamer, love the comparison of all the heads over the last 7-8 years
just FYI R11s is the best feel and true head. The rest are crappers.
Appreciate the honest numbers. I feel like a lot of youtubers would fudge numbers to keep their sponsors happy. With that said I absolutely love the Sim Max. Its def most forgiving driver ive used.
Thank you!! Great video. And I love you just used the heads. Shafts can make a big difference. This was exactly what I was looking for.
Your video just demonstrates that strike overrides every technical features that the manufacturer put into the new(er) driver. The spin on the longest drive from using the R1 was 2200 that gave you the optimal carry. Everything else was near 3000 rpm or above. If you can hit with a slightly higher strike point or more +ve AOA, the results would be completely different.
You're totally correct, but also fail to realise that these vids are....YT Click Bait. There's as muc reason in marketing this vid as there is in the clubs themselves. There's no way this is a technically proficient video outlining the pros and cons of a club head. The wind in involved and witnessed during the vids is reason enough to create doubt. I'd expect atleat 20 balls from each head without wind to gauge the effective range. 6 yards between heads with only 2 tries is redundant. All of these club heads could easily achieve the same distance.
Ironically I've only just started and bought a used r15. at best I can hit it 250, but usually around 220. Moving the weight makes no difference at all if your technique is crap. :D
Shows you really with anything relatively modern, the proper fit and your good to go! Makes budget very applicable when choosing. Thanks 🙏
Couldn’t agree more! Fit is king👌🏼
Great vid... enjoyed the history and evolution in performance. Still have my R1 and you confirmed the reason.
haha awesome to hear that!
The differences in the sound is really noticeable. The last TM diver I played was a Burner Bubble but I have always liked the way TM drivers sound over everyone else’s.
R15 is still a beast! I’m still using it and hitting 300+ bomb
Same
bombs only
I think the R1 would be going back in the bag lol. I love my M4. Taylormade makes the best drivers. They look and preform amazing. Great video bud.
I get OCD hearing those heads banging and scratching the crowns ☠☠☠
no scratching crowns when 8 round heads are kissing each other in bag lol
Andrew.
The man, the myth...fantastic video! Loved it! Why???? Because it proves you dont need to go out and spend 550.00 - 650.00 for a driver! I think the combo of that awesome shaft you play and materials of the old heads was what made the difference! Of course I always believe that the shaft choice is about 70% of your distance and speed.
Great job brother! Keep it up!
Iron comparisons next?
exactly. SHAFT MATTERS MOST
Great comparison. I'm still bagging my Cobra Fly Z from back in 2015. I've tested everything and nothing is noticeably different enough to justify the purchase. In my opinion, as long as you're fitted to the proper shaft, the head doesn't really matter. I'll use my Cobra until it breaks.
Couldn’t agree more!
Won’t watch this until home from work this evening but giving it a like now, as I’m sure I’ll enjoy it !
you da man Craig!
I agree as someone else asked what about the Original M2 and M1 they were some of the longest ever to be hit .
I bought a used R1 in black from golf galaxy. It was the best $25 I’ve spent yet! I smash this thing 285~295 on average, with some rolling out past 300 yards.
it hits far...but its all over the place in my opinon lol you cant trust that thing
@@oldben1800 wrong shaft will do that
Fun vid, I subbed...Greetings from Santa Cruz. I love my SIM MAX but getting fit is key...
Thanks for this!
if every taylormade driver was genuinely longer, everyone would be hitting 500yds by now.
you just made me feel alot better about the R1 that's still in my bag.
Just sold it for $60..served me well before..
Average driving distance in 2019 almost identical to 2012. All this "tech" they are selling you means nothing to distance. Probably a little more forgiving, but your average golfer who is buying these by the millions can only flush a drive 1 out of 10 times anyway. has zero effect on their game. Just my opinion anyway
thats why they sell the forgiveness so hard. more forgiving means further average drives for shit players. still right in the trees though lmao
That's why i refuse to buy a new driver. I hit my R9 Supertri (from 2010) just as good as the new stuff.
Not going to upgrade my r15 either. Prices for the latest drivers are insane
I still use my R1 with an Oban Kyoshi White shaft. Love it
Another great video Andrew!
Thanks Jack!
Always happy to see an Andrew Jensen YT notification.
good man!!
Good stuff... would love to see a ball test w driver and iron #’s. Titleist Balata, Professional 90, initial ProV from 2000 and today’s ProV 👍
Thank you for the reviews - I really enjoyed the comparison , seeing the different flights and carry. Do you think with SIMS going so high that the roll out will be less?
yep
THE R11S Is still one of my All time favorites! It is still just an All round great driver
Great video Andrew
Nothing has beat out the R11 yet imo. I broke a shaft in my newer driver and had to go back to it for a bit.... Still using it lol
Absolutely loved this vid. Now my purchasing a new driver decision is harder than ever lmao. I would love to see a Callaway one. Especially with the Razr and the GBB Epic.
Will have to look around for that Callaway as I've been a TM staffer all these years so haven't hit anything else in that time 🤷🏼♂️
@@andrewjensengolf now I feel like a turd lol
I love the R11s Daymn was looking forward to that.
I have “tried” to replace my very old TM Burner HT driver with Senior standard shaft every year to no avail!! Club Champion even couldn’t find a better driver! Shows to go you!! 😀😀 Some marketing folks!
Idk how you don’t have more subscribers!!
For anyone who wants to properly understand how to hit further - get fitted. The heads make a lot of difference if you miss hit and a good fitter will find a shaft that suits you to a tee. I’ve switched from a XS RDX blue to the old smoke yellow as my miss hits create less spin and go further as a result of being able to control the spin. When I buy one it goes 20 yards further than my best with the RDX.
i bought them sim when it came out, so far im liking it i do feel like my m5 was better not sure why they removed the higher and lower option on head i liked it
Just retired and bought a black R1 to get restarted economically after 20 years away from golf. I googled some videos to see how it stacks up. You made me a happy boy! (BTW Sim doesn't get a mulligan!)
That's a nice collection of classic TM Drivers. I hope he takes care of them...😳
I take great care of them, thanks. Tossing them in a felt lined shoe bag for the purposes of this video was my best option. Having heads from the last 9 years lined on my shelf... I don’t see how much better one could take care them 🤷🏼♂️
Be interesting to see how your irons have changed over the years too
I got the taylormade rbz black, 10.5° loft, stock stiff flex shaft, if you ever wanna make a video on 150$ taylormade aginst those 400$sims and m-somethings. Bought it summer of 2019 so its still pretty new. Im on the westside of jacksonville if you wanna barrow it for an afternoon. As always, great video. Keep it up.
Its adjustible up amd down 2 degrees so you can dial it in for you im sure.
Such an awesome idea for a vlog. Proves that older technology is still so playable. I think you could go through the bag with this idea.
Thanks man... what was the craziest was just how different the sound & feel has changed over the last decade
Andrew Jensen very true but for pros like yourself obviously looking for the edge in performance the newer tech is ever improving but for weekend hackers like myself there is so many great clubs still on sale, a few generations back at a fraction of the price.
Couldn’t agree more!
R1 has always been a horse, fun vid to watch.
Just a thought...had you made another. Series(like you did with SIM), would you have outdone the modern club?
I recently got pretty into golf after playing very seldomly over the past 10 years. I'm shooting around 100 and have a SUPER OLD set of clubs. My driver is like 150ccs probably. Smaller than a modern day 3/5 wood. My buddy has an extra taylormade sldr in mint condition. I used it today and hit it decently well. But need more practice. From what I saw you didn't like your sldr ? What's your take on it? From research it was one of the longest hitting of it's time with the very forward CG but it's very unforgiving and not rlly for beginners. Should I stick with it or look for something else ? Not sure if I can beat it for like 40$ from a buddy. I'd like to keep budget under 100$. What u think? Thanks
I use the r1 2013 for my beginner driver and seem to do really well with it
I was trying to do the same thing with my old R11 compared to my R1 and M5... was bummed I couldn’t fit the R11 head on my current shaft for an accurate comparison.
yeah, 2013 was when the sleeve changed... I had totally forgotten until faced with it haha
Nice video. What shaft comes standard with the 2017 m1?
Very cool vid!
No M2? Anyway, good video. It totally proves that the tech improvements in the last few years have been minimal at best.
Exactly. The M2 is once in a decade club in alot of peoples opinion including Tiger so I'd say that carries a little weight. Why was it not on the trial?
I did almost the same comparison, except with 3 drivers. Nike Covert 1.0, TM R1 and the SIM. I hit the Nike 3-5 yards longer than both the R1 and SIM. And since I already own the R1, looks like I'll be saving over $500 by not buying the "latest" technology.
HD MyDyna thanks
I have the Nike covert tour and 1.0 at indoor range - and they were very forgiving- (dispersion) is ever important for
Me keeping in play👍
I seen a lot of swings your swing speed wasn’t captured. What’s your sweet spot for swing speed?
I’m guying a new set of irons soon. I am looking at the p790. I’ve been watching a lot of reviews of a lot of iron because I have been pretty much bed ridden since September. I’ve had 4 ankle surgeries since then and this latest one last Tuesday was a mega one. A bone graft with a cadaver bone. No weight for 6-8 weeks. Yay.
I feel so much better about playing an R1 for the past 7 years. I just don’t hit any others like it except maybe the Ping G30.
I’ve got the r15 still looking to upgrade. Not sure if I should go
Sim 2 max or the new stealth
Interesting to see the minimal change in distance, but I think the real difference is in the missed shots. I would be courteous on the dispersion pattern differences.
hitting only 2 drives each didn't really create huge dispersion but the misses were still all over the place. That's what continues to impress me with SIM the most... the misses are still so up in ball speed
Good job....love to do what you were doing, but my low back wouldn’t let me ......haha haha haha
What about M2
Everyone knows the original M2 and even the gen 2 are king. Best TM driver and possibly driver ever made
Still got my ol reliable R1 in the bag but the SIM is on its way 👍🏽
Niiiiice
Sweet but after seeing this review makes me want to dig up my R1 head from the basement!! :)
Had the R15, I loved that driver!
Question. For a new golf. I was looking at TAylor drivers I came across some used clubs R11, R15 R1 about $40 less than the M1. Which would would be better purchase? I want try Taylor before I jump in a new one
M1 if it's only $40 difference. Watch some vids of the R15 vs m1. I had a r15 and now a m3.
Good video. Do it again but with 5 hits for each head.
I can't believe there's not any videoes of the comparison like this.
Hahaha great timing. The 2021 version is coming out today… still only 2 hits. 45 driver swings is A LOT!
I miss the R1, that Driver was a lot of fun. But my M3 is probably the best driver I’ve ever owned, no intention to switch the SIM tbh
You need to tee it higher. Will increase angle of attack and get your strike higher on the face. You're spinning it way too much on most shots, and a lot of those are super low spin heads
Hey there Andrew Jensen! I’ve just subscribed to your channel.. Hard to see golf youtubers as fun as you😂 Btw im using the TM Burner 2007.. Which of any TM Drivers do u recommend for me to buy ? I mean in average dollar with good distance and forgiving? Hope u reply my comment🙏🏻
That was fin to watch! How about doing the same with your 3 woods throughout the years and your driving irons.
Gotta love siblings 😂
thanks for the video men , i always love to see something fair and honest as you did use the same exact shaft for all of them
still hitting the m2, cant find a reason to change, long n straight
I have the R11 and I still smash it. Love the look, feel and sound. I’m 62 and even with my old fart swing I’m spanking it out to almost 280-190 yards.
Maderas CC in Poway CA hole 11 with a tail wind last week, 310 yds
Liar
I have been trying to replace my SLDR driver for 7 years. My ONLY requirement is 10 yards more carry I don't even care about dispersion but it seems the newer clubs are much more forgiving with off center hits but not much more on distance so it is not justifiable at $500+. Goes to show you almost no one should be buying new clubs for the tech
I have the original m1, I like it pretty well and get good performance but have getting the itch a little bit to get a new driver here lately. Do you think upgrading to the sim would be much of a difference? I know the sound would improve. I dont like the look of the bottom of sim, but may be able to overlook it for a performance and feel upgrade.
Sim is more forgiving probably a little higher spinning so may lose a little on the best shot but gain more on miss hits vs the m1.
@@juliomac8497 your prediction is true!🤣
@@bfgolf now that I've learned what they do next stop is learning how to make them.do it lol
To be fair, you should have used the R1 a couple more times too. Great video.
Wow what a really enjoyable video and I’m really pleased you let the SIM have another chance to redeem itself
I have the r7 from when i started playing. Got it used for 40 dollars. My buddy got the new cobra driver for 400 dollars. I out drive him by 40 yards. Is his driver broken?
might just be improperly fit...
Sadly I'm still playing with a TaylorMade Bubble Ti 2 as I've not had a chance to buy a new one.
Do you get discounted clubs? Also it would have been nice to have the year next to each head when you show the list!
Great video. Thanks!
I’ve been on staff with TaylorMade all of those years, so I’ve been fortunate enough to get my clubs for free
I got the SLDR 430 and Nike Vapor Fly Pro in my bags
Andrew - Have you tried the Burner Superfast 1.0 and 2.0 drivers? I think they're longer than most of the heads you tried on this comparison.
Can't believe you didn't have the 2016 M2...one of the most sought after models in the used market..Nice vid tho
I never gamed it... these were the heads I used on Tour over the years 🤷🏼♂️
Wait wat u don’t have light in ur toilet?
The R11, R11s and the R15 came out right around the end of high school/early college for me. I thought the white head always looked so good... I still have never hit them but I always wanted to so I’m always searching ebay for a steal of a deal so I can try it. Hopefully it’s not one of those “never meet your hero’s” types of things lol
R15 was so awesome, I loved it, so if you can... try and hunt that one down!
R1 tour with two 10 gram weights. Was pure.
I just switched back to my r7 2005
I have read that the sim 2 and r11s shaft is compatible, but I guess that is untrue?
The sleeve changed in 2013 with the SLDR, making everything since then compatible (shaft to head)
I still use a Burner Superfast 2.0 from 2011. Blows all of these away IMHO.
Cool video but not sure how you get accurate results with the wind gusts goin on there ... I would like to see this on a calm day
Hey Andrew, as a high school student, I am not able to buy the latest and greatest odf golf clubs, out of theses clubs, which one would be the most bang for my buck?
Really, it just comes down to what fits you best. You can get used heads/shafts online, but if they aren’t the right fit, there’s no bang for your back at all. Do a bit of research, get on a launch monitor and hunt down a good bargain, you’ll get the most bang for your buck there
Hi Andrew do u have any tips to n getting started in playing tournaments as a jounior
The only thing would be google or ask around to see what tournaments there are in your area... then just go play! The only way to start, is to start.
2016 m2 driver is my fav
I 100% agree
2017
Big Fax
Same. R15 is nice, aeroburner seems to be hot, but hard to beat 16 m2
Now take two more swings with the r1 now that you’re warmed up lol
My buddy still plays an R1 and I keep telling him he is many models behind. He keeps saying he doesn’t see any reason to upgrade to newer models. Can’t wait till I send him this video😂😂 he will say this video proves his point
hey, whatever works and gets the ball in the hole!
I guess I just have to get a good shaft for my R1 and I’m good.
Thinking about trading my R11 for Sim but not sure
I use a M2 3 wood and absolutely love it. How about periodically just going down the line? Would like to see that one for sure.
I’m still using the 2017 M2 tour 3 wood... as for down the line, aren’t all those shot tracer angles down the line?
Down the line of clubs. 3wood, hybrid, long irons etc.
ahhh, got it 👊🏼
😂👍
Everything I've read on line says the shaft adaptors drom the newer clubs do not fit the R15. I love my R15 but my swing speed has increased and have found multiple shafts from m1-m6 that they say won't fit. You seem to be able to interchange them easily. Do you have a special adaptor?
It’s been the same adapter since 2012, so you shouldn’t have a problem with the R15 head and M sleeved shafts
@@andrewjensengolf I appreciate the reply! Loved the video too!
Go Canada! Nice to see Nick Taylor win one for the great white north
abso-freakin'-lutely! Such a solid dude, love seeing him back in the winners circle
