Hi Andrew. If you recall, I’m the Montrealer who broke two arms a year and one half ago, and contacted you. I found the video very interesting and commented that I can’t find another driver to beat my TM Burner HT Senior Shaft! Maybe I shouldn’t have replaced the rest of my clubs last summer with M6?? I had them tweaked at Club Champion in Delray recently.
Still love my R1 but it is getting long in the teeth. Seems like the R15 from what ive seen takes the low spin of the SLDR into account and gets u about 6-10 more yds so that what im looking into maybe upgrading to. However in this test the R1 again wins.
@Johnny Appleseed Well, i was consistently getting 265-275+, i sold it and got the 2020 SIM MAX, that i can hit 285+ but its just a bit less consistent on the dispersion. It almost feels like im hitting an illegal club as the effort doesnt need to be put it. I get like zero roll out btw here in New Hampshire so I'm sure id be loving any coarse that has firm fairways.
@Johnny Appleseed honestly, I hit the r1 more consistently but I've gotten longer distance from the Sim Max. I sold the r1 for $110 and the Sim only cost $259 so I'm glad I upgraded. The Sim head is slightly oblong vs the r1 is more sirmetricle which I liked more. I will say the regular shaft worked better for me then the stiff in the max, ventus shafts r slightly stiffer so don't be afraid of regular shaft unless u swing super fast.
Modern tech wins - as long as you give it twice as many chances as the old tech! I suspect if you hit 20 shots with each club, assuming your back would last that long, and averaged the results (discarding any obvious outliers) the result would be very similar across the years but that the later drivers had better dispersion
I love these comparison tests of older drivers , i am playing Jetspeed 460 and R 15 460 right now , love to see these included in you're tests ! Thanks !
I bought a used R1 in black from golf galaxy. It was the best $25 I’ve spent yet! I smash this thing 285~295 on average, with some rolling out past 300 yards.
Your video just demonstrates that strike overrides every technical features that the manufacturer put into the new(er) driver. The spin on the longest drive from using the R1 was 2200 that gave you the optimal carry. Everything else was near 3000 rpm or above. If you can hit with a slightly higher strike point or more +ve AOA, the results would be completely different.
You're totally correct, but also fail to realise that these vids are....YT Click Bait. There's as muc reason in marketing this vid as there is in the clubs themselves. There's no way this is a technically proficient video outlining the pros and cons of a club head. The wind in involved and witnessed during the vids is reason enough to create doubt. I'd expect atleat 20 balls from each head without wind to gauge the effective range. 6 yards between heads with only 2 tries is redundant. All of these club heads could easily achieve the same distance. Ironically I've only just started and bought a used r15. at best I can hit it 250, but usually around 220. Moving the weight makes no difference at all if your technique is crap. :D
Average driving distance in 2019 almost identical to 2012. All this "tech" they are selling you means nothing to distance. Probably a little more forgiving, but your average golfer who is buying these by the millions can only flush a drive 1 out of 10 times anyway. has zero effect on their game. Just my opinion anyway
if every taylormade driver was genuinely longer, everyone would be hitting 500yds by now. you just made me feel alot better about the R1 that's still in my bag.
The differences in the sound is really noticeable. The last TM diver I played was a Burner Bubble but I have always liked the way TM drivers sound over everyone else’s.
Andrew. The man, the myth...fantastic video! Loved it! Why???? Because it proves you dont need to go out and spend 550.00 - 650.00 for a driver! I think the combo of that awesome shaft you play and materials of the old heads was what made the difference! Of course I always believe that the shaft choice is about 70% of your distance and speed. Great job brother! Keep it up! Iron comparisons next?
I did almost the same comparison, except with 3 drivers. Nike Covert 1.0, TM R1 and the SIM. I hit the Nike 3-5 yards longer than both the R1 and SIM. And since I already own the R1, looks like I'll be saving over $500 by not buying the "latest" technology.
HD MyDyna thanks I have the Nike covert tour and 1.0 at indoor range - and they were very forgiving- (dispersion) is ever important for Me keeping in play👍
For anyone who wants to properly understand how to hit further - get fitted. The heads make a lot of difference if you miss hit and a good fitter will find a shaft that suits you to a tee. I’ve switched from a XS RDX blue to the old smoke yellow as my miss hits create less spin and go further as a result of being able to control the spin. When I buy one it goes 20 yards further than my best with the RDX.
Interesting to see the minimal change in distance, but I think the real difference is in the missed shots. I would be courteous on the dispersion pattern differences.
hitting only 2 drives each didn't really create huge dispersion but the misses were still all over the place. That's what continues to impress me with SIM the most... the misses are still so up in ball speed
Great comparison. I'm still bagging my Cobra Fly Z from back in 2015. I've tested everything and nothing is noticeably different enough to justify the purchase. In my opinion, as long as you're fitted to the proper shaft, the head doesn't really matter. I'll use my Cobra until it breaks.
Exactly. The M2 is once in a decade club in alot of peoples opinion including Tiger so I'd say that carries a little weight. Why was it not on the trial?
Great video man! Up until 2014 I was a mega Taylormade fan boy since I was very young and the R1 for me was my all time favourite! Great to see that one win it!
Appreciate the honest numbers. I feel like a lot of youtubers would fudge numbers to keep their sponsors happy. With that said I absolutely love the Sim Max. Its def most forgiving driver ive used.
That was so much fun, good seeing those heads against each other, always wondered why I changed the R1.. also had the SLDR, R15, M2, but living happily with the M6 still...
@@BGM6474 Loved my R1, recently switched to SIM for forgiveness. Gave my r1 to a buddy, he's now ripping it, getting another 20 - 25 yards compared to his R15...I had the Black version which in my opinion looked far better than the white with orange stripe.
You need to tee it higher. Will increase angle of attack and get your strike higher on the face. You're spinning it way too much on most shots, and a lot of those are super low spin heads
I have been trying to replace my SLDR driver for 7 years. My ONLY requirement is 10 yards more carry I don't even care about dispersion but it seems the newer clubs are much more forgiving with off center hits but not much more on distance so it is not justifiable at $500+. Goes to show you almost no one should be buying new clubs for the tech

Andrew Jensen very true but for pros like yourself obviously looking for the edge in performance the newer tech is ever improving but for weekend hackers like myself there is so many great clubs still on sale, a few generations back at a fraction of the price.
Break out the old original titanium 9.5 s-90 bubble. I've had 5 350 plus drives with it. I also still have my R1 in the bag with a couple drives over 350 as well. Just tried the Qr10 and I wouldn't use it if it was free. The r1 stays in the bag
I have the R11 and I still smash it. Love the look, feel and sound. I’m 62 and even with my old fart swing I’m spanking it out to almost 280-190 yards. Maderas CC in Poway CA hole 11 with a tail wind last week, 310 yds

Yeah M2 510 TP SLDR that's like what Taylor made is done over the years for drivers Sim and the stealth are cool at all but those guys are icons before
The m3 is the bomber of the group here , get a different shaft and get that 3600 spin down below 2500 and it will go another 20 yards for sure ... The feel and sound of the M3 is light years ahead of the m1/m2 era to boot . The m3 is kinda funny driver sound wise as it sounds pingy with the weights forward and awesomely carbony with the weights back ...
Thank you for the reviews - I really enjoyed the comparison , seeing the different flights and carry. Do you think with SIMS going so high that the roll out will be less?
I have “tried” to replace my very old TM Burner HT driver with Senior standard shaft every year to no avail!! Club Champion even couldn’t find a better driver! Shows to go you!! 😀😀 Some marketing folks!
Great video Andrew... as always, really enjoyed it. Little bit unfair treatment toward the R1 there? You didn't give it a second run as well. Did I detect some preferred liking toward the Sim😶? Enjoy it bro👊😉
haha not about any preferential treatment. The newer driver is what's in the bag and not being able to hit the R11s I figured I would hit SIM again having now been warmed up. As for Will below, R1 isn't longer at all lol, that was a great hit that felt like shit in an ill fitted set up... I'll take the dispersion and forgiveness on SIM 10 times out of 10
@@andrewjensengolf is there really that much of a difference on carry distance if struck in the middle though? I feel like this test proved there's not much. As far as dispersion and forgiveness the r1 can't touch the new stuff but if we're talking straight up carry distance when struck well on a properly fit club it seems like the older stuff is right there
Will B yeah man, totally agree! This “test” wasn’t extremely scientific or meant to prove much beyond having a little fun the older heads and seeing how they compare with the launch monitor I have in Mevo. Getting on the X3 and with all the settings set perfectly for each club would give us the data to really prove a point on the new vs old debate. I’ll save that stuff for the super gear heads, and stick with the fun banter of old vs new
I’m guying a new set of irons soon. I am looking at the p790. I’ve been watching a lot of reviews of a lot of iron because I have been pretty much bed ridden since September. I’ve had 4 ankle surgeries since then and this latest one last Tuesday was a mega one. A bone graft with a cadaver bone. No weight for 6-8 weeks. Yay.
My buddy still plays an R1 and I keep telling him he is many models behind. He keeps saying he doesn’t see any reason to upgrade to newer models. Can’t wait till I send him this video😂😂 he will say this video proves his point
I got the M2 couple years ago I put it away because I still go bombs away with the R7 Superquad the best driver they ever made easily hitting as far if not further than my playing partners
Not sure what was happening with the SLDR. The "so high" comment is the exact opposite of the way that club is supposed to function. At that loft the apex should still be lower than a standard driver since it is front weighted. Weird.
Derek Nicholson as I said at the beginning of the video.. these are the heads I GAMED over the years. Can’t hit a head I never played this don’t have kicking around the house

The feel and sound of the M3 is light years ahead of the m1/m2 era to boot . The m3 is kinda funny driver sound wise as it sounds pingy with the weights forward and awesomely carbony with the weights back ...
I know this is 2 years old but in retrospect you realize that you were just trying to sell yourself a dream that your M3 was a good one right LOL
I feel so much better about playing an R1 for the past 7 years. I just don’t hit any others like it except maybe the Ping G30.
Andrew - Have you tried the Burner Superfast 1.0 and 2.0 drivers? I think they're longer than most of the heads you tried on this comparison.
Idk how you don’t have more subscribers!!
Thank you for the reviews - I really enjoyed the comparison , seeing the different flights and carry. Do you think with SIMS going so high that the roll out will be less?
yep
I bet that M1 ball ran more than the others when it landed
I’ve got the r15 still looking to upgrade. Not sure if I should go
Sim 2 max or the new stealth
R1 was and still is my favorite driver. I could hit it over 300 yards
working on a fun comparison of that 2013 driver VS 2023's Stealth 2!
I’d take the M4 with the right fit over any of those for sure!!!!! Just saying, I think it’s the longest
i liked the M4 Dtype and loved it. but I like my new/used M5 lol better lol, feel a little bit more control and more constancy with my swing
That's ldr was actually longer than the m4 and now that for two years past your comment I bet you understand that not having to M2 there's just crazy
impressive that only 10 yds separates best from worst over 10 yrs
Nasty snag pull wins.
Now take two more swings with the r1 now that you’re warmed up lol
R1 black is still in my gamer ..... Not willing to pay $500 for 3 more yards
I don't blame him. No chance I would want to tee it up with a sim knowing nearly a 10 year old driver is longer lol
haha not about any preferential treatment. The newer driver is what's in the bag and not being able to hit the R11s I figured I would hit SIM again having now been warmed up. As for Will below, R1 isn't longer at all lol, that was a great hit that felt like shit in an ill fitted set up... I'll take the dispersion and forgiveness on SIM 10 times out of 10
Makes perfect sense Mr Jensen... the fact that it's in the bag is all the reason needed. Keep up the great content... loving your work👊😉
@@andrewjensengolf is there really that much of a difference on carry distance if struck in the middle though? I feel like this test proved there's not much. As far as dispersion and forgiveness the r1 can't touch the new stuff but if we're talking straight up carry distance when struck well on a properly fit club it seems like the older stuff is right there
Will B yeah man, totally agree! This “test” wasn’t extremely scientific or meant to prove much beyond having a little fun the older heads and seeing how they compare with the launch monitor I have in Mevo. Getting on the X3 and with all the settings set perfectly for each club would give us the data to really prove a point on the new vs old debate. I’ll save that stuff for the super gear heads, and stick with the fun banter of old vs new
I miss the R1, that Driver was a lot of fun. But my M3 is probably the best driver I’ve ever owned, no intention to switch the SIM tbh
Yay.
Gotta love siblings 😂
Macgregor golf ball vs srixon ad333 vs kirland signature vs titleist prov1 1
I use the r1 2013 for my beginner driver and seem to do really well with it
My buddy still plays an R1 and I keep telling him he is many models behind. He keeps saying he doesn’t see any reason to upgrade to newer models. Can’t wait till I send him this video😂😂 he will say this video proves his point
hey, whatever works and gets the ball in the hole!
I got the M2 couple years ago I put it away because I still go bombs away with the R7 Superquad the best driver they ever made easily hitting as far if not further than my playing partners
I got the R7 for my son. He smashes it past me. 42 vs 18. Got to love youth
Not sure what was happening with the SLDR. The "so high" comment is the exact opposite of the way that club is supposed to function. At that loft the apex should still be lower than a standard driver since it is front weighted. Weird.
Lots heads missing M2 ,M4 without much thought !
Derek Nicholson as I said at the beginning of the video.. these are the heads I GAMED over the years. Can’t hit a head I never played this don’t have kicking around the house
@@andrewjensengolf ok point taken thanks for reply ,much appreciated, unlike mark crossfield that never answers or take time to look at poeples posts or reply to questions. Big thumbs up.
Hi mate just wonder what you think is better a sldr or the m3?
I liked the M3 wayyyy more
@@andrewjensengolf thanks mate for your help
Cool video but not sure how you get accurate results with the wind gusts goin on there ... I would like to see this on a calm day
