Tudor Pelagos 39mm Review: The Perfect Dive Watch for Professionals and Enthusiasts

  • The Tudor Pelagos 39 has been out a short time and its created quite the stir in the industry, offering a titanium diver that is at a much more wearable size in the 39mm case and 40mm bezel. It is light, comfortable and comes with Tudor's T-fit clasp. It sounds like the culmination of all their best products from the Black Bay Pro, the Black bay 58, and the Tudor Pelagos Original line. What could be against it? There's conversation about that in the video including the sunburst bezel and dial.
    Some answers for some questions:
    1. Yes I’m on Instagram @wrist_swap
    2. Wrist size 6.75” or 170cm
    3. The clasp is 47mm long and 18mm wide the links leave the backend a bit early and it’s curved, so I don’t notice the length
    4. T fit adjustment allows 7mm of adjustment

    I think it’s a master stroke. It’s not a smaller Pelagos. It’s almost a new line in its own right. The size and aesthetic will appeal to many. I love it. Nice video.

      So true - to me, it's kind of lifeless. It's not a smaller Pelagos. Looks don't make it a Pelagos. The 39 is not toolish or professional. It's more of marketing.

    As a girl, the marketing really worked for me. Tudor does a great job of making watches that fit us while still keeping the tool, diver, active style. That nod to me on vacation in a dress or at the pool, yeah that's how I'll use it.

      I think that’s exactly it, a lot of people are confused by the marketing, but I personally saw them as saying “look, men and women can wear this, it’s not too large or ungainly for smaller wrists”.
      I think it’s smart from Tudor, we really need to move away from men’s/women’s, and concentrate on just buying what we like.
      As anyone who knows watches well enough, the marketing isn’t made for us. We know it’s a 39mm titanium diver, and we know an approximation of how it’ll look and feel on wrist.

    The Pelagos 39 is the only watch that I didn’t have to think long before buying it. I went to the AD, put it on my wrist … game over. Simply stunning, impossibly legible dial, incredibly light and wearable. It’s a master stroke.
    Just the week before I had tried on all variations of the BB58 (including the 925) but none of them convinced me. The moment I put on the P39 I liked it right away.

    You hit it right on the head. The watch is far closer to the Rolex mission than modern rolexes. It hearkens back to the serious Rolexes from the 1960's thru the early 90's. I wore a 1980's Rolex REF6263 for 30 years and this watch brings that to mind, with the size and weight of the classic sports watches. Nothing is ostentatious about the Tudor, and you are 100% correct on the silly WR stats. I've never met a pro diver who even wears a watch. They all have proprietary dive computers. But for burly, overweight status-ers, they have something to argue at the poolside bar. This Pelagos 39mm is a keeper.

    Great video and review. I appreciate the thorough content and especially pro/con review. I have seen quite a bit of people say that this Pelagos 39 is a large departure from the original, but you're spot on to point out that the FXD started that trend towards a thinner, no date and more sleek design. I can't wait to get this watch.

    Great review of a great tool watch. I like the bezel a lot - in certain light, it appears to almost be a ghost bezel. Very cool. I love the red text, the lightness, the no date, the size. This is the Tudor Sub of 2022 and will be a grand slam home run for Tudor.

      +1 on the ghost bezel comment. My AD got one in and I was able to try it on. The ghost effect (along with the lightness) was one of the first details to jump out at me. Along the lines of the red text, it felt like a bit of a nod to vintage pieces and to the enthusiast community. I love it.

    Cool review, the new Pelagos is a great watch. The only thing you got completely wrong is water resistance. You need to do more reading so that you understand watch depth ratings better. 200m on the dial doesn't mean you can dive with it down to 200 meters, not even close. It's just a static water pressure the watch can handle.

    • @Kristoff3434
      @Kristoff3434 Год назад +1

      I could not agree more, and I am actually surprised that almost no one gets the real meaning of water resistance. In the video scenario even a breitling navitimer could handle a swimming pool day, which is untrue and could take someone to a disaster. But nice vid!

    • @HarrisonElmore
      @HarrisonElmore  Год назад

      Water resistance is a tricky business of static pressure and on small batches of watches rather than each watch. The dynamic pressure change from moving is actually minimal and the gasket aging and temperature in the water are larger factors. Either way, it is capable enough for all recreational diving. I've used 100M watches diving and been perfectly fine. The ISO Rated Diver's 200M gives more assurance, but this does just fine for all I'll use it for.

  • @waterfordrs22
    @waterfordrs22 Год назад +2

    Very good, helpful perspective on the value of good fit. It’s an absolute game changer. That said, for people habitually wearing larger cases, it might require a kind of recalibration of sensibility and expectations. A larger watch very much is designed around impact. Watches, as objects, when they get down to around 40mm and smaller, they simply take on better visual balance and you can really wrap your eyes around them.
    And then there’s wearability. They are much more comfortable. On social media forums, with people posting wrist shots, there’s a ton of people who would be well served to really question why they feel a need for such large watches. I know my understanding of fit has evolved simply because I questioned it. I grew bored with larger watches for the most part, there are exceptions, but as one collects, if your tastes don’t evolve and refine over time, I’m not sure there’s much point to it.
    This was a very good revue, there’s good reasoning behind it. Cheers.

  • @dchdcvdlsks
    @dchdcvdlsks Год назад

    Full disclosure - I've just bought this watch and had it for just under a week. I have to say, this video is spot on - the only thing missing is the clasp is probably longer than most people think (about the size of the watch head). It doesn't bother me but you do want to get it sized properly - after that it's a none issue. After all the Omega Seamaster 300m doesn't have a tiny clasp!
    The marketing point is really well made - I've seen other reviews just hate it. However, I completely get why - if you go "dive" then you're up against the larger pelagos (I used to won the LHD version) and it would suffer in comparison. I suspect Tudor is not only learning about watchmaking from it's bigger brother Rolex, but also marketing and audience segmentation.
    Oh and this is the first video I have ever seen which explains the depths of diving and how 200m is more than enough. Kudos!
    The dial/bezel sunbursts just add depth with the dial sunburst being hugely subtle. You find yourself looking at the time just to marvel at the cleverness. I also like the fact the case is 39 but the bezel is 40 - wearing really well but not losing presence.
    What isn't mentioned is dial width - I also have a 41mm BB GMT (which I adore!!). They both pretty much have the same dial size - meaning good legibility
    The big thing which stood out to me - this IS a tool watch. Rolex's are essentially jewellery now with screaming shiny designs. This is the other fork in the road, it feels like a sliding doors moment where this is what a sub "could've been". I look at it and think it's the love child of a Sinn u50 (strong dial design) and Rolex Sub - and that's no bad thing. I also look at it and know in my heart, I don't want a sub.
    It's a brilliant watch - VERY light and that does take a few days to get used to. Once you're over that then your way.

    Best and most fair review of this watch I have seen. So many people are moaning about the marketing or that it is not a toolwatch etc, but then you just put a diagram of the depths people actually are allowed to dive to and it kind of ruins their arguments for more water resistance.
    this has a good goldilocks size, no date, titanium + comes with a nice rubber strap, this is an absolute homerun for Tudor especially after the not so interesting Ranger release.

    • @fsn206
      @fsn206 Год назад

      I thought about that, too. Decided to keep both of them for a few reasons: 1. the main difference between BB58 and Pelagos 39 is the material: SS vs Ti and I don't really have a Ti watch at all and wish that Tudor be my first one to acquire Ti. 2. I looked into many other currently available Ti watches and nothing else appealed to me the way Tudor did in terms of its esthetics and wearability at 39/40mm. 3. No other brand has the resale value retention as much as Tudor does especially with the way Tudor company does not just mass produce their products like Tag/Longines/Omega. They are employing its older brother Rolex sales tactics Conclusion:. So I get to keep them and enjoy them until I really want to let one of them go or just keep adding on Tudors onto my collection. PS. I know this one guy who loved BB58 so much, he has the original black BB58 and the blue 58. And then there are guys who are only into Omega moon watches as well.

    Really solid review, the vids are getting better and better, keep going, man. Would I prefer a matte bezel with the 3D bezel on this 39? Yes. But it is also rare for a watch brand, especially a heritage brand, to get so many things right. I don't mind the 21 lugs, 22 nato or leather straps will work fine. I actually like the proportions of thinner lugs with a more integrated bracelet that the 21mm lugs afford. Honestly, the bracelet and rubber strap work so well it is hard to complain about the lug width. Can't wait to get it on wrist

    This watch has everything that I love. Something in particular that I love on this watch is the flat PIP. I have a Rolex GMTII (116710). The Pelagius 39 has everything that I wish my Rolex had. Ironically I cracked my PIP within the first month of owning the watch. It is barely noticeable, but pretty funny since all vintage Rolex watches are missing or shattered. I am definitely a fan of this Pelagius 39 and plan on picking it up soon. Thanks for the great review!!

    Well said. Was so bored of people trying to downgrade the 39 because they own a 42. Its a matter of wrist size for some, they cant wear the 42, its huge, thick watch on steroids. 39 isnt really a 39, due to bezel size, it is technically a 40, and wears like a 40 which is the optimum size for most of people. I own one and it was love at first sight in the AD. Was concerned about the titanium but it wears and feels great. People are complaining about the sunburst bezel but if they spend some time with the watch would see that its sunburst only under the sun. Under the shadow its more matte, and plays with the surrounding lights really nicely. A perfect under the radar, modern watch with a super precise and reliable caliber. Truly a versatile watch.

    This is a home run for Tudor. However aesthetically it looks very similar to the Seiko SPB143 which IMO looks better and has a real sunburst dial. There is no point doing a sunburst dial if you can't even see it...Other than that it's a shame Tudor never released a steel version at the same time. A steel version with some tastefully done polishing or just all brushed would have a broader appeal, which I thought is what Tudor was going for. But overall it's a hit!

You've addressed many arguments for overcoming my objections to buy one. I still think this is more a Black Bay with a few design upgrades and a snowflake dial rather than a genuine Pelagos. But I do think it is a cool watch and I think you've influenced me to want one. Although I use to own the 42mm Pelagos and I now own the BB58 and 40mm pre-ceramic Rolex Sea-Dweller as well as a few Subs, I thought my itch for dive watches was scratched but now I think I will have to add this new Pelagos to my collection as I don't have a titanium dive watch. Nice looking watch! This grey makes a nice move from the Datejust 41 dark Rhodium. If you don't need to dive but want to be able to go into the water, the Nomos Reference 782 (blue dial, oyster-style bracelet) is also super. Full disclosure: that has become my daily driver.

    The consideration of the various points of contention was pleasantly dispassionate. And seeing as you asked…
    I agree entirely that the wrangling about depth ratings - even beyond 100M - is practically ridiculous.
    Having an aesthetic or non functional taste/preference is so much of what the watch hobby is about, but having taste/personal preference about technical elements is an invitation to get lost in the intellectual weeds.

  • @GarethDix

    Completely agree, so many of the reviews were focused so much on the launch video showing it as a lifestyle watch so that meant it wasn't a true dive watch anymore... how many people that own a diving style watch actually dive? Not many... so they made a smart decision making a watch that's capable of diving with... but giving it a much broader appeal. I dive and I would wear this as a back up to my computer

    Great review man!! Great watch as well. I have a 5 digit sub and a BB58 and this one reminds me of both. That being said there is no way anyone can go wrong purchasing this rendition of the Pelagos. It looks like the 5 digit dimension wise with the over hang bezel and the case more than likely closer to that sweet spot of 39mm. Love Tudor and Rolex. Specifically Tudor models today and Rolex models from the 90s and early 2000s. Once again great review!

    The comparison to older "tool" watch Submariners is spot on for me. The reason I'd never own a modern Submariner (aside from price and availability) is that it is no longer a "tool" watch, though it could be argued it could make you look like a "tool". I'm excited to see this watch in person and I'm already selling on some of my less worn watches to make room and some $$$$ so my wife doesn't kill me ;)

    But 200m doesnt mean you can go 200m.
    The watch can withstand a pressure of 20 bar. This is equivalent to a hypothetical 200-meter water column bearing down on one square centimeter. The watch can be kept on while diving in moderately deep water.

      LOL. Hard to disagree. The "reviews" have turned into opinion based updates.
      I mean, I wish the P39 had a date window and the amazing OG Pelagos clasp, but I don't think I could call it a negative.
      It's just different. You can't please everyone and EVERYONE has an opinion.
      Hate it or love it. The P39 is a slam dunk, no doubt about it!

    The one thing that made me sell my 42mm Pelagos was the Titanium itself being very, very prone to scratches. I take care of my watches but despite all my efforts, there were new scratches almost daily . I couldn't deal with that so I sold it. Too bad this one would be the same. I'll just stick to my 41mm Sub then.

    I need some takes on this. I currently own BB58 blue dial and I love it. Anyways, I was contemplating replacing it with OG Pelagos blue dial. I love the new Pelagos 39, but don't want the black dial. IF they release the blue dial, do I switch it? Gawd, I'm such a Tudor fanboy now...

    • @HarrisonElmore
      @HarrisonElmore  Год назад

      Hahah aren't we all? It depends. If sentiment isn't a part of it, then maybe if you're looking for more of a muted appeal. The BB58 will always be a better fit for its more stylish and reflective nature. The Pelagos is more of the muted, (boring in some ways) cousin.

    Absolutely a great looking watch, on paper, great specs.......don't know why Tudor hates adding date complications? I get it, some people like no date. I really like a date function. I would have had several Tudor watches by now if they added a date complication (without changing elements of the designs) to some of their watches. They come out with this EXACT watch with a date, I'll be the first in line.

    Great review, thanks. Agree re the weird marketing. But there is nevertheless something appealing about this watch. Tried on the 42mm Pelagos with the rubber strap at the NY Tudor boutique recently. Amazing watch but just too big for my 17cm wrist. Am thinking the 39mm Pelagos on a rubber strap could be perfect. If only I hadn’t bought the boutique edition bronze BB58 while I was there…😁
