    I was torn between the Omega MOTFM and the blue Pelagos. I went for the MOTFM, and I absolutely love it, but sometimes I think about “what could’ve been” with the Pelagos. That magnificent blue, that phenomenal bracelet and clasp, that to-die-for luminous dial; it is such a handsome tool watch!!! I hope one day it will join my MOTFM in a rotation. GREAT review!

      They were the two I was looking at 4 years ago or so. Not natural competitors, but similar prices, I’m still thinking about them all these years later, still haven’t committed. The only thing I’ll say, is that I’ve seen the Pelagos go for as little as £1600, with the MOTFM going no lower than £2500 really. I still really want both, though.

      Sounds like just an opinion for which you offered nothing to support it. Nada. Are they in different leagues because of quality? No. Movement design (Tudor movement has a longer power reserve and is nearly identical to the robust Rolex movement) , volume of watches sold? Why are they in different leagues?
      I'm asking as someone that has purchased two Omega watches, Panerai, Rolex, Breitling, Cartier, etc. I haven't noticed anything in my Omega watches that puts them in a "different league" than Tudor...or any of the other I mentioned.

    Wow--I COMPLETELY agree with you, Mark. The Pelagos is superior as a straight tool watch, but I like the Seamaster more for its combination of tool and style. The bezel on the Tudor is functionally better than the one on the Omega, but the scalloped bezel on the Seamaster is adequate and I like its dressier, more elegant look. This is certainly a case where one can own both watches--as you do--and find plenty of occasions to wear each of them.

    Just gone for a Pelagos in noir and love it's clean utilitarian lines, (comparatively) low weight, amazing bezel, dazzling lume and adjustable bracelet. Compared to the Omega it's quite low key (a couple of colleagues have SMPs) and I like that it has a conservative functional look. With 500m water resistance, auto He valve, titanium construction, 70 hour power reserve and excellent accuracy from the in house movement (it has not gained or dropped a second over the two weeks it's been on my wrist) it really is the definitive tool watch.

    One nitpick: the Omega movement is COSC certified. It’s then cases up and tested to METAS standards for the “Master Chronometer” designation.

    • @8AP1
      @8AP1 5 лет назад +7

      The Pelagos is certified chronometer too (COSC). Though the tolerances are tighter with METAS, in reality I've seen better accuracy with the Tudor MT in-house movements than the METAS coaxials. I have one tudor which runs +0.5 SPD and another at +1.2 SPD.
      Saying that, the Omega SMP has a 15,000 gauss anti-mag, which is technically insane (over 1,000,000 a/m), it's an overall better movement, but the Tudor in house are great movements too

    • @maxpower6356
      @maxpower6356 4 года назад +1

      @@8AP1 I think the point being made is that the Omega undergoes both certifications. My COSC+METAS certified AT is more accurate than my Rolex 114300 which is under +2 s/d straight from the factory. One thing you did not point out in your review is you can easily look up the Omega's test results whereas the Tudor does not offer this service? A great resource for verifying your watch's authenticity as well as how it performs.

      @@rousseau327 in reality of most user experience. The general concensus is the MT56xx movements are extremely accurate. Both mine are less than a second a day. Most users report the same, freakishly good accuracy. Ask any watchmaker worth their salt and they'll tell you the same.
      One thing with METAS is that it's guaranteed to be +, which is better IMO. A slightly fast is always better.
      Finally, I'm not bagging omega, in fact I plan to get one.

    • @rousseau327
      @rousseau327 4 года назад

And what ends up happening on these forums, is people will use the best anecdotal evidence to justify their purchase, and use the worst anecdotal evidence and say "well shit happens".
      Both METAS and Superlative Chronometer from Rolex are beyond just a +/- rating, it's also the condition under which they're tested at. Basic COSC isn't the same, regardless of what anecdotal stories people have to tell.

    I always assumed that if and hopefully when I indulged myself in buying a luxury watch, it would be an Omega, possibly a Rolex. I could never justify such an outlay, but back in 2014 when I got engaged, I felt it was the perfect opportunity to warrant such a purchase. Well, the lady gets a nice, expensive diamond ring, why shouldn’t us guys get something too...?!
    I went in rather blind believing Rolex were the best of the best with their phenomenal marketing and image. As most watch enthusiasts will know, in reality they are second or even third tier compared to the truly esteemed giants like Patek Phillipe, Lange & Söhne etc. That is not to denigrate Rolex, I’d effectively be denigrating my own watch and some by doing so and Rolex is an utterly phenomenal brand with such a wide range of incredibly beautiful watches that I defy anyone not to fall in love with one. The Rolex Daytona Platinum Ice Blue is my such watch and I have no shame in admitting that is out of my price range...!
    Anyway, with a budget of up to around £5k I started looking and began with Omega in confidence. While many of the watches were/ are great, when it came to one that I wanted to own, wear and pay my hard cash for, nothing truly spoke to me. The Omega Seamaster garnered obvious interest, but just didn’t do it for me, despite Omega getting much critical acclaim about their wonderful Co-Axial movement.
    A touch despondent, I then looked at Rolex, a little reluctantly as I was put off by the admittedly subjective “look at me” stigma it would bring, but supremely confident I would fall in love with one nonetheless. Yet the more I looked, the more I was just underwhelmed and much as I love the aforementioned Daytona, even if I had that kind of money, it is a bit flash for me. The submariner range came closest to getting a bite, but just as with Omega, nothing that remotely convinced me. They were a little small, flashy/ glossy and I didn’t like the amount of text on the face. And I hate cyclops!
    Utterly despondent, I began browsing all ranges. A few Tag (I know...) watches looked nice, but ultimately meh, then when all hope was lost, something called a Tudor Pelagos leapt out of the screen. I’d never even heard of Tudor... a little research and I soon learned what we all know, in very crude terms Tudor is effectively made by Rolex at affordable prices, but in real terms that does a complete disservice to the rich heritage and individuality of Tudor in its own right.
    I loved that it was largely Rolex quality, but without the albeit subjective stigma’s that come with a Rolex. I loved that it looked like a submariner, but without the glossy, flashy elements. I loved that clean face/ dial with minimal, plain text as opposed to the cluttered, confusing dial of Rolex. The matt finish of the bezel and face made it majestically understated and wonderfully legible. The lume was resplendent, the clasp with its micro adjustments ingenious. The rubber strap included (though given the bracelets ingenuousness I have worn that almost exclusively). The snowflake hands, which after some research is a nod to the historical Tudor submariners that were provided to the French navy in the 1960’s, sums up much of the wonderful contradictions of the Pelagos; a contemporary, modern watch, yet with classic, historical connotations. And I simply adored that it was brushed titanium rather than shiny steel, a big preference for me. Oh, and it didn’t have cyclops!!! It just flew under the radar which I loved and was a watch you wouldn’t be frightened to wear, a proper tool watch. If ever a watch was made for James Bomd, this was/ is it ;-)
    After more research than is probably healthy ;-) I looked in to the movement which of course is a massive thing for watch enthusiasts, probably the biggest thing for most and of course the (original) Pelagos has an ETA 2824 movement (albeit a high quality one with Tudor enhancements) rather than an in-house movement. Now I understand my conclusions will be an anathema to those that believe a luxury watch simply must have an in-house movement, but given there was little real world benefit as the Pelagos comfortably runs within chronometer specifications and some, I regarded it unimportant. It would be easier and cheaper to service and though investment potential was and is irrelevant to me, hindsight, whilst still currently subjective of course, indicates the original ETA Pelagos will be more of a collectible that the in-house 5 liner Pelagos given the original 2 liner was only manufactured for 3 years. It is also the first titanium watch made by either Tudor or Rolex. There is precedent of ETA watches, even for Rolex (technically a Valjoux as they were purchased by ETA in 1966) being more collectible than in-house versions.
    So as you can probably guess, I bought the Tudor Pelagos and am absolutely delighted with it. Over 5 years later it is losing 1.9 seconds a day (this changes in the summer to around the same but gaining). The 5 liner is a beautiful watch too, I love the blue version, yet as per my stated enthusiasm for understated, non-flashy watches, I admire it yet wouldn’t want it. And I certainly prefer the 2 liner to the 5 as to me the original Pelagos is noticeably different to any Rolex which was a great allure for me, the 5 liner and the lines, pardon the pun, become more blurred. The loss of the marker at 3 is another negative on the new version, but which ever version you have, the Pelagos is amazing.
    I’ve never quite understood why the Pelagos doesn’t garner far more acclaim, even playing second fiddle to the Tudor Black Bay, albeit a fine, wonderful watch in its own right. Maybe one day it will be remembered as it deserves to be, but in the mean time I will enjoy wearing it and admire its understated majesty every single day.

    Like the design of the Pelagos much better than the Omega. If they would do a 40mm version of it, I would want one. Even better, in the combination of the lefty.

    Both good watches but the Pelagos (LHD) is a better beater. The tool watch styling just works better on a daily basis when out and about or when at home doing chores and DIYing. Bought both around the same time in late 2018 and the Omega (black) has stayed in it's box ever since picking it up at the AD. It's a bit too glossy for mundane every day use but not quite smart enough for more special occasions. Was thinking about trading it in today but had a look at it for the first time this year and it is a good looking watch, so it's not going just yet. Horses for courses...

    I appreciate a see-through caseback, especially on a water watch. Tudor is Rolex so they just cover it up. Omega wins in that category.

    Like both but sometimes the blue on the pelagos is a little too blue. Combined with the matte everything it felt a little off in terms of colors. I passed on the pelagos and own the blue version of the 2018 smp.

    As I wear my SMPc (previous gen, 41mm, black lacquer dial) with a suit on a daily basis, my choice would be the dressier Omega, but the toolish Pelagos is awesome, too. Great timepieces!

    Going between the omega white dial 300 and the Tudor black bay 58 with the red aluminum bezel. I know the better watch is the omega but I do very much enjoy the style of the faux patina and vintage look of the bb58. But the white dial is mesmerizing aswell. Tough decisions

    Omega fanboys are just as bad as Rolex.
    The Pelagos is cheaper, has longer power reserve, is lighter, has better lume, is easier to read and is overall a better tool watch. That said, the Omega is a more luxurious piece. If I was going to own only one watch, Omega...hands down. Dress it up, dress it down, great re-sale, etc. But, if you already have a dressier piece (Rolex GMT, Breguet, Breitling, JLC, etc.) you may want to go with the Tudor.
    Honestly, I'd do the Omega in black and the Tudor in blue...they are different enough (especially in in different colors) that they could easily be part of the same collection and not compete with each other for wrist time.

    I don't WANT to HEAR the bezel turning. I only need to feel and see its location. I have been working toward buying the Diver 300M...in black. Tudor is too big-chunky-clunky...although I love the look of the lume in the Tudor bezel, the Omega dial & bezel have the far better look, materials, and legibility in the daylight. The Pelagos is CERTAINLY a tool and should be viewed as such. The Diver 300M is a tool watch that went to finishing school and spends its days in more well dressed company. The Omega is Art & Science to an excellent, superior standard. The Tudor is a perfectly optioned work truck.

    my Omega smp with blue dial and waves shits all over the Tudor. Dressier, versatile and prices are slowly creeping up. Also, Bond connected and modern classic. Come at me Rolex bros, but this Omega smashes my Sub no date and I love it. At least from a tech spec. Lets be real, Tudor will always be rolexs little brother
