I've never had an interest in Omega, their watches don't do it for me, but I enjoyed the video.
@@locutusdborg126 to each their own. In my opinion the 42 mm is the perfect size.
@@williamrizzo1285 agreed!
The new Seamaster, especially with the white dial on black rubber, is just fantastic.
It's going to be such a nice pairing. I love these new photos of the watch on rubber! Thank you as always for the comment Shazbot
I got one a few months ago, and yes, it's incredible.
Personally I like the helium release valve. It's a part of the character of the watch. It breaks away from the pack with a distinct look and personally I think they pull it off rather well.
I love it man.
yep, do I love it? No. Do I want it? Probably not. Is it cool? Most definitely. Once again, no one is forcing anyone to buy the watch so I have no issues with it. Often, in a modern highly commercialized world, the uniqueness and icon of a product is more important that the function or even looks. For a modern luxury mechanical watch, that is especially important as things such as METAS certification are not enough to persuade customers to make a purchase decision in this highly competitive market. There is a reason why every Speedy and Submariner looks the same as the previous one
Picked up my white dial seamaster yesterday. Had been waiting months for it to be released and it was worth the wait. Went in the shop yesterday just to try it on and ended up taking the plunge. Absolute stunning watch and quality is second to none, very happy indeed. Will wear it out for the first time today, can't wait haha
black dial 2018 version owner. Very easy choice for me. Wears smaller than other 42's. I am normally a 36 to 40mm guy but this wears easy and looks great.
Long live the new Seamaster.
Preach! Thank you for the comment, brother!
this chap has nailed the reasons why you should get this watch. i have the white dial at its stunning.
Your dispassionate approach, to a subject many are passionate about, is commendable. Cheers for another fine presentation.
Great audio, IDGuy. I'd love to have an Omega in my collection, one day- whether it's a Seamaster or not, I hold high regard of the history of this company.
Thank you Peter. I feel the same way. It may not be the SMP, but a Seamaster does deserve to be in a collection. Have a terrific weekend!
I have the white dial on a rubber strap, sexiest watch ever. Nothing looks quite like it, not even other SMPs 😂 and it goes well with suits, casual even just underwear. So beautiful
Another brilliant episode ID Guy. I've always like the Seamaster but have never bought one. Perhaps one day I will add one to my collection. Looking forward to your next video.
Thank you as always, brother. I'm so enjoying these brief discussions. Instead of the video taking 10 hours to prepare, I can spend an hour and have it ready... It's also nice talking from the heart for a change ;)
The current Seamaster 300 is truly a watch that you have to try on. It is a large watch, yet the lug configuration and bracelet allow it to sit quite well on a 177mm wrist. It definitely draws you in, especially the blue dial. Waiting for the opportunity to try on the 'Great White' and decide from there. It may not be an investment watch, but it can be a passion watch.
Thank you Reed! They have managed to work the lugs really well on the piece (having them span a much shorter length to make it more wearable) I'm so keen to put money down on this watch when I have the funds. Thanks for the comment as always! I eagerly look forward to the release of the "Great White"
Rubber strap is a must!
Such a well made video. All of your points are spot on. The skeletonized hands as you say take up the negative space and adds to it's character. The HE valve also adds to it's character. Mine fits beautifully on my 7 inch wrists. I have to say the Seamaster 300M is the diver that will define this century not the Submariner.
InChrist87 Agreed completely. When everybody is using an inductive charger the size of a mattress to charge their EV, having a movement that is particularly susceptible to magnetism (cough ROLEX cough) will be a true anachronism.... and not a charming one.
Thank you for the comment, man. I think all of the elements they've included adds to the package (and removing what made the 90's piece so iconic would be a mistake) As for the watch being the end-all defining watch of the century, it is hard to tell. The Sub and the Seamaster are two different animals (both are very historically significant without a doubt)
I think this watch will be a wicked seller for Omega. Its gorgeous.
Love my 2019 SMP blue dial!!
Your videos provide such a considered approach. Great content as always.
Thank you so much Mabbs... This new "Audio" approach lets me condense 10 hours worth of work into just over and hours worth of preparation. I love this quick and easy format! So hopefully it'll become more and more streamlined over time where I get to discuss topics from every end of the spectrum. Thanks for the comment!
@@ID-Guy +1 on the love for the audio format. The message is still clear!
Got the new one with blue dail, just love it! Its my daily beater, and in the weekends i wear my Speedy moon watch, great combo at least i think:-)
Henrik Andersen amazing combo. Might try adding a dress or pilot watch...maybe white dial.
@@shipmate3577 Thanks and good advice! I may buy a dress watch to add my two watch "collection", Im looking at Rolex dayjust and GS with white dail one leather:-)
I'm so glad you enjoy the two pieces (they make for an excellent pairing) and thank you for the comment Henrik! I'm so, so tempted to make the Seamaster my first luxury purchase...
Henrik Andersen The DateJust would be a great addition.
@@ID-Guy once again great video! I have owned the previous generation and now this current generation w/black .... its a great watch with latest improvements. If you can get one go for it, i'm sure you won't be disappointed!
Another cool video from a designers perspective. Thank you.
Cheers and keep them coming!
Greatly appreciated Rick. I really enjoy these quick takes. It turns a 10 hour process into one that takes around an hour to record and edit together. Thank you for the comment!
Own the Panda, getting the Great White. Great review, as usual, my man...
In my opinion it looks really nice and there's no BS of a waiting list there's no way I'm going to give some company my hard-earned money and get on the list for 2 years
Great white model is stunning
Great review. I actually really like the hands, I think they are part of the character of the watch. Less keen on the escape valve, but it is also part of its character, so I can appreciate why Omega stick with it. I have often seen owners commenting that u kind of don't really notice it once u start wearing your Seamaster on a regular basis anyway. I love the Great White, the Bond blue and the silver dial. I would really struggle to decide which one I would buy as I think they all look awesome for different reasons..
Perfect review, well done. Just purchased the white dial on a bracelet and picked up the rubber strap a few days after. Truly a versatile watch and my Breitling rarely gets wrist time anymore.
Bought this watch a couple of months ago, worth mentioning is the precise timekeeping. Plus 0.25 sec/day, incredible for a mechanical watch.
Just love it.
A wonderful in-depth review.Thank you.
Such a pleasure Scott! I'm playing around with this new format (and it feels so much easier to put together compared to the usual 10+ hour write-up / recording and editing) Thank you so much for the comment!
Got my 25th anniversary one in Blue. Love it! btw, the fact it's 42mm is a major reason I bought it.
Was never a big fan of the SM, but I'm going to go try on the white dial in the next few months. Looks beautiful
Spot on review of a great watch at great value. I love the hands and that they moved the date to the 6 position. It is also the first watch I like the bi-color version with Sedna Gold. Usually I am not a fan of that, but here it works somehow for me. But maybe wait a bit with an eventual purchase and then check also out the gold-brownish dial that might come with the new Bond.
I have to disagree about the 42mm being too big, and the 13.5mm depth being too thick. (I have a Tag at 41mm and 12mm thick, and it feels on the small size. I am not even a large wristed person.) Once you own a larger watch, and I do, 41mm is nothing. Also once you get used to looking at this watch, the He valve disappears. When I think back to the original first version of the Seamaster Pro, I thought the He valve stuck out. In time it vanished, and was nothing more than another gorgeous stainless steel adornment.
Thank you for your review.
Beautiful watch.
One thing that I've noticed that I haven't seen anyone mention is that the rhodium plated silver/white gold indices just has a shimmer that I haven't seen on any other timepiece. Whatever the material being used has the ability to reflect light as if it were a gem. You can see the twinkle of colors that are in a rainbow. It's absolutely gorgeous. My Tudor black bay definitely doesn't do that.
InChrist87 Agreed. I see the same on my SMPmc std black dial. A shimmer that isn’t there even on the Submariner.
@@DBravo29er Exactly! I have the black one as well.
@@InChristJesus87 You are so right! I actually have a Rhodium plated piece and the surrounds do shimmer in a very different way! Thank you for bringing it to my attention (I'll be sure to highlight this in a future discussion)
Omega have shown Rolex for what they really are, a company who thrive on their name, selling the likes of the sub way over priced for what you get. Omega Seamaster 300m is amazing value for your money and a much better watch both in looks, style and movement. This year the Seamaster 300m has gone up in price by £400 in line via demand though the customer will have no problem getting the watch from Omega. This watch is quickly becoming the wearable dive watch to buy, even Bond Movies see style and roughness since Brosnan up to today's latest releases. Not buying this may be something you will regret some day, as I'm not surprised if this becomes a classic.
Excellent, comprehensive video, thanks as always. I would be keen on the SMP for myself, although my 2201.50.00 PO (a Bond watch btw) ticks the box for me.
Thank you David! I'm trying a new streamlined format that take the 10+ hours of preparation and turns it into just over an hour. So! Hopefully I'll be able to juggle more varied topics while also including write-ups every week. Thank you for the comment as always and continue enjoying your charming Craig Planet Ocean ;)
That white dial😍
I enjoyed this content but I bought the prior version without the waves .. I enjoy a cleaner and slightly smaller watch.
I recently got really into watches, and the He release valve turned me off at first. But the more I see this watch, the more I like it, it gives it a unique character that makes it stand out from any other dive watch. And the white wave dial looks so nice! Still need to see one in person, but I might have to get one of these.
Anothr great video focussing on design elements you see and point out for us mere mortals. After watching this video a few times I went into my local dealer specifically to look at this watch. The one I was struck by was the gray wavy dial version. Not as much pop as the great white but still a strong contrast. As I looked at it more and more, it struck me as almost the perfect dressy sports watch. I especially like the contrast between the dial and the bezel. The hands being blue that I thought was also a wonderful touch. On my wrist, 42 mm is perfect. I love the bracelet, again adding some dressiness to the piece.
Yeah, can't wait for that great white. But imagine a great white panda chronograph!
I just purchased the great white SMP. The helium escape valve is ok for me design-wise. The main problem I have with it is that is snags my wrist hairs. I wasn't expecting this but the machining is generally sharp on this watch, and the HEV has particularly sharp corners. Otherwise, the watch is fantastic. It's been running at 0 s/d on the wrist w/o precautions of any kind on my part as far as leaving it resting in one position or another. Phenomenal.
Top rate review. That white dial one looks so smart. Maybe my next purchase,
Well said..
Thanks for sharing.
at 5:31 what is the reference number for the seamaster on the right?
Got the Brosnon one many years ago still great
Excellent content dissecting into the design, super informative!
It also deserves to be said that the Seamaster line goes back a long way prior to the original Bond watch of the 1990s. Some of the early Seamasters were actually dress watches - which is part of why the original Bond watch, in carving out a new niche as the “dressy diver,” made so much sense. And then there’s the history that stretches back to the military watches that Omega made during WWII. There’s at least as much backstory to the Seamaster as there is to the Speedmaster moon watch.
Nice review. Really like my black 300M 2018, keeper for sure. Looks really great on steel bracelet as well as leather strap. Skeleton hands actually gives it a nice look, though may not be the best for true divers, which I am not. I wear it on my ~15cm and is perfect for me, not the only 42mm in my collection.
Been waiting on that great white. Want to see that one in person soon
Me too! I've been browsing all over the internet to see some reviews of it but it looks like Omega has been keeping the watch close to their chests ;) Thank you for the comment WC!
Agree. The white face is on my short list. Cannot wait to see one in person. To many black faces right now.
it is fk amazing ! the white one
nice video
Thanks a Million Mclaren F1! Fun fact: Gordon Murray is a South African Designer ;) You truly are a special car.
I have the new one in black. Love it.
Nice video, always good content.
Thank you so much Jeremiah! I'm experimenting with a new format that'll help streamline the preparation process. So hopefully the content will be more frequent and varied in the future! Thanks for the comment!
The ‘Bond’ Seamaster has truly made a positive impact on the watch enthusiasts community.
I know people who have owned them, traded them in to buy a Submariner and are now buying the Seamaster again as they tell me it is the most comfortable watch that they have worn.
The strap options offered by Omega really should send signals to Rolex that they should offer different strap options on their watches too but, we are talking about the stubborn, ultra conservative Rolex here so, that is highly unlikely.
The ‘Great White’ looks like a lovely dial option and I’m sure that it will appeal to many who can’t obtain a ‘Polar Explorer II’. I look forward to seeing one myself.
A great observational breakdown of this watch here from the go to watch channel on RUclips. Top marks my friend! ✊
My Bond-era Seamaster is the most comfortable watch I've ever worn. My only gripe is not having micro adjustment, but I just found out there's a way to upgrade the clasp. Once I do that, I'm sure I'll be happy with the watch for the rest of my life.
@@mcstarling07 I'd say check out the new one. The clasp really gives you on the fly adjustability for any climate, it's awesome.
Thank you as always, brother. I love reading your comments (and thank you for the email!) Maybe I'll catch you tonight on Arch's stream. Rolex really should take notes from Omega (like they did with their clasps) Odds are they never will now that they've reached this manufactured echelon of theirs... but oh well...
Fantastic review! Question: is rubber strap durable to avoid losing your watch one day?
Best watch out there!
The new Great White will be a SMASH HIT
Now we need a brief piece on the Seamaster 300 Master Co-Axial, the '57 styled watch.
Also, for Seamaster fans with smaller wrists, there are Planet Ocean models in smaller diameters.
Absolutely. Being able to abbreviate these discussions has made me so much more flexible with topics. My favorite of the family is the 38mm '57 Tribute Seamaster, so I'll definitely add the co-axial into the discussion as well ;) Thank you for the comment as always MTechn1k
I own the Great White version and love it. And agree that it would be the perfect watch if it were 40mm. The Great White has a similar vibe to my 40mm Rolex Explorer II 16570 polar dial, which I probably wear at least twice as much as my 300M. If the Omega were 40mm, it would wear better on my (very average) 7-1/4 inch wrist and would probably replace the 16570 as my “go to” watch.
How can you make pictures of all these Omega watches with the time on 10:07:37? The crown is pushed in..
I think most are renders, not real photos.
How about this: you make a movie of the watch starting at 10:07. Then delete all the frames before and after the 37 second position...
@@renebense I guess that can also work.
Thanks for the comment Rene. The hand-setting in these product images is purposefully done to highlight everything on the dial as clearly as possible. With the hands set at 10 - 07 and 37, you have a clear picture of the dial and all of its elements (like batons and plots) without the hands getting in the way and overlapping them
The blue on blue on stainless steel will be mine!
I think the strap Is still one of the best looking straps out there and I love the curve on it I think that it looks better than the current strap , I have the chronograph version with a white dial and polished steel bezel and when I look at it , it does not look dated at all imo its one of the best looking dive watches of all time
Do you know if there is going to be a new SMP released in the near future?
Absolutely brilliant, I'm just going to watch /listen to this presentation again,
I think you've touched on just about every salient point, that there is to talk about,.. Very much appreciated,,
One day, I'll be able to afford one of these, hopefully,,,, it's the Grail, for me,,,, thank you,,
Thank you John. I am also very keen to pick up one of these Seamasters when I have the funds. The modern pieces are really setting a standard! Thanks for the comment!
I have the grey dial and it's marvellous. I wouldn't have bought it if it was smaller. I have a 19.5 cm wrist, and it's rare that watches below 40mm look good on me. :)
Good morning and excuse me but I have a question for you. In you opinion is better the Seamster Trilogy 1957 (6,5k Euro) or the Seamster 300m white (4,2k Euro)? It's my first diver and my second watch, I'm so excited but is the present for my 43 years old. Thanks for your attention...
One of the best analysis of this watch comparing and contrasting the design in relation with its early history. Just getting ready to get the blue one on steel. IMO the movement is surpassing the Rolex submariner. I don't wait at least a year and pay twice as much for the Rolex. Rolex is the best marketing company in Swiss watches but-their business practice like the diamond industry creates scarcity on supply to raise its demand.
It’s a mens sports watch... how is 42mm big? The submariner is roughly the same size (lug to lug)
Watch Aficionado I agree. Many dismiss the SM300M compared to the Sub simply because they think 42mm is just too big, compared to 40mm (especially on their inevitably small wrists).
There’s only two issues with that. Firstly, a larger dive watch makes sense, as it’s a tool watch, and legibility is key, extra size (so long as it’s not too big lug-to-lug) is a thing. More importantly, people that automatically dismiss the SM compared to the Sub based on size ignore that the lug-to-lug dimension is actually SMALLER than the Sub, especially when including the bracelet endlinks, and is better for smaller wrists as a result.
Well it is true that some just do not have the wrist for it. They should offer two sizes maybe. I personally have also no issue with 42mm for men, it is the same as the Speedy. There is also a large uni-sex market, as seen on the 36mm success from Rolex. The small lady sizes are total out of fashion for most. If a watch has 36 to 38mm, I can be sure my wife occasionally wears it, too. But as a functional "tool" and sports watch for men, I personally like the 42mm.
No it's not this one is bigger that the old Seamster 300m which is bigger than the Sub both of which I own. Don't misled people. It's a fine watch but it bigger than and Sub and the Older Seamaster 300m
@@robertsullivan4773 Do you own a dictionary? Do you even know how to construct a coherent sentence? Doesn’t look like it.
@@IrishScribbler and you have nothing better to do than commen on posts over a year old you loser.
Beautiful watch, so many options in colors and bands. Incredible value. And you missed a huge factor with the display back
ID Guy, great video as always. I would be genuinely intrigued to see you do a video about the Apple Watch. I own one - I only ever wear it when working out - but there are many things about the design that really bug me and I’d be intrigued to see what your thoughts are too.
I know I'm in a minority, but I love that the watch is 42mm. I have a huge wrist and won't rock anything smaller than 40mm as it looks ridiculous on me. .
I bought the last plain black dial with ceramic bevel , I looking at getting the new white dial with black rubber straps , although I have to say I would prefer silver hands on the watch instead of black , I think it would give it a softer look .
It would be good to hear more from you about the design of the new Diver 300M Chronograph version, and the merits of the bi-compax dial layout versus the 3-subdial Speedmaster and Daytona. Actually you could do a whole episode on the wide range of chronograph dial layouts. Thanks as always for an interesting and thoughtful video.
Reducing the size from 42mm to 40mm would have made the different for me NOT to buy it. Love the size at 42mm. It wears very thin, much thinner than the 13.6mm would suggest. I got mine on black dial with steel bracelet.
Agreed mate, it is spot on at 42mm.
I am one of those that cannot pull off 42mm and I already saw people with the same wrist size as mine and that does not look well. Big deal breaker...It is a pity, I like the design.
Thank you Miguel. I feel the same way. Just out of personal preference, I stick to 40mm's, but it is down to lugs as well. I think if the lugs are tapered (like the Seamaster) the 42mm presence is barely noticeable. Thanks for the comment!
Wears the same as a Submariner
It's no problem to be true fits nearly the same
leaked pictures of a new omega 300 ? can't seem to find them
Well said esp the comparison u made with Rolex
I love Omega watches, but sadly I can't afford one without of course selling one of my kidneys... Absolutely stunning watches by Omega and of course without the Rolex price tag!
How do you guys feel this white dial will age?
Am i the only one who likes the helium release valve?
No
Another great video 👍 I have a seamaster with the TV case from 1973. Great watch. The new ones are without doubt built very well and probably better than many Rolex that are out there. My problem is omega seem to bring a new watch out every month. I cant keep up with them.
Thank you as always for the comment David! I agree... not with the "every month" part... more like "every week". They need to slow down! But this new "Great White" is going to be something worth looking into! I can't wait for them to release it.
@@ID-Guy I agree it does look special. Hopefully get to see one in person pretty soon. I'm still on the hunt for my vintage explorer 1 I will pull the trigger one day soon.!
I liked everything about this watch, except the non-functional skeleton hands at night. A dive Watch with a HELIUM ESCAPE valve but unreadable in the dark?? Quite an irony there. I tried and failed to tolerate those hands. Couldn’t do it. I flipped mine.
Disregard this comment he's a notorious Rolex Fan Boy, He had no business buying the watch, he had made up his mind before he bought it that he was going to dislike it. It's a Rolex. In my opinion Lume is the most overrated feature of a watch.
I must be too used to larger watches, because I find the 300 Professional too small for my taste. I more often wear a Planet Ocean.
Buying for my birthday in November
Fantastic video, and fantastic watch, great time keeping and co axial master chronometer, ceramic bezzel etc you get so much watch for the money you pay
What I hate about seamaster is the association with James Bond, like Daytona with Paul Newman. I just want to see the design effort not ruin by marketing effort
I do not see the problem with Omega in the association with Bond. I also bet Rolex would like to take that back. Omega launches in my opinion too many special limited editions, e.g. the Speedy, which are not so limited at all.
Andreas T I shouldn’t use the word “hate”. Yes, there are just too many models in the Seamaster category, and fortunately they didn’t make a quartz movement which some watchmakers made and that’s terrible.
thank you for the great quality content. Your "angle" on watches (ie design analysis, rather than playing the hype card while taking money from the brands) is refreshing and stimulating.
I would love to see an episode on the ZRC Grands Fonds 1964 design. I think it deserves it...
Cheers
Wearing my great white while watching this video
I can see the attraction of that white dialled version for a different look. It’s got a similar colour scheme to the ceramic Daytona with its black ceramic bezel, brilliant white face and red script. It has a slightly antiseptic look however as does the Daytona. When everything is finished to a highly polished shine there’s a touch of the robotic going on. The size is OK with me as 42mm is in my wheelhouse. The helium escape value should be less prominent or get that wart taken off altogether. And the panda dial should have had contrasting hour markers in black ceramic like the bezel. It’s always going to be the ‘poor mans Sub’ in some eyes. Not mine. I have both. Nothing wrong with this iteration. And it’s plenty bang for the buck.
Hey, ID Guy.
Hey Crappy! Hope you're doing well, brother!
Great video once again but the author clearly spoke as someone who never had the transitional model and could not appreciate the subtle joys the model brings. For many of us it remains the best Seamaster to date. Cheers.
I love the HEV, as the video states, makes the watch look like it has hidden features other than telling the time. Appropriate for a Bond watch.
Great video, thanks.
Nail on the head when you said the older generation have not aged well, they look naff rather than classic.
I suspect the same will happen to this watch, it will look dated within a few years.
I also question this link up with James Bond. I'm a James Bond fan but can't understand the tie up with a fictional character, I find it makes me cringe whenever I see a shot of JB flashing the watch.
The JB link, for me, is one of the reasons why I would probably NOT buy the watch.
I also can't stand the SS bracelet. I can't explain why but it just doesn't look like it belongs in 2021 but has no classic/vintage aesthetic nod either. Seems to be in a design no mans land.
Modern Dive watch is a dive computer, it’s a myth that serious divers use expensive watches to time their dives.
This watch is for men, not little boys with small wrists. Incredible movement and quality product
I would say the SMP’s biggest failing is its dated modernity. The SMP was built for the 90s, and it shows. What makes the Rolex Submariner so timeless is its conservative design. The less trendy and avant garde features a watch has, the more it can transcend the decades (of course the Royal Oak is the big counter argument to this idea). Omega took far more liberties with the SMP, and ironically gave us less timeless details to embrace. I still love the SMP, though, partly because of my nostalgia for the 90s.
2230.50 best reference ever.. 2254 with white bezel and indices 👍
Black dial on a 5-ring white NATO strap with black stitching and black keepers.
I own the original best watch. Better then my Rolex
I own this watch. Have watched every review I can find on this piece. This is by far the best review I have seen- agree with all your points. If it was 40mm and 2mm thinner, it would be the perfect watch. Especially for someone with small wrists like me. I find switching to the rubber strap reduces its heft.
Watchmakers should design watches like this new Seamaster, including Omega themselves. Something different that we can only buy from them.
The Seamaster has that gimmick feel to it. If it was thinner, had a tapered bracelet and better knurling on the bezel I'd buy one.
