Has Omega Perfected The Seamaster 300m In 2018? - A Review & Comparison Of 007's Next Watch

  • The Omega Seamaster 300m luxury dive watch holds a very special place in my heart as it takes me right back to my early days of discovering Swiss luxury watches.
Forever inextricably linked to the James Bond franchise since 1995's "GoldenEye" movie and with countless variations over the decades, how time has flown since its debut in 1993!
Today I take a look at one of the most exciting 2018 releases (Ref. 210.30.42.20.06.001) for its 25th anniversary and compare it to the previous version from 2017 (Ref. 212.30.41.20.01.003).
What has changed? What has been added or taken away? Will this be the next watch for agent 007? Lastly, I ask perhaps the most important question: with the rise and success of the Tudor Black Bay taking the crown of the best Swiss luxury Diver under $5000, can Omega step up its game and retake the title? Join me to find out!

TGV, even 3 years later you still have *the best* video on RUclips of the 2018 Seamaster 300m. Your video also really hits home how underappreciated the chrome dial variant of this watch truly is.

The updated Seamaster was designed to go toe to toe with the Sub, and it does. In my opinion, they didn't come out with this model to compete with the older/outdated versions. For the money, show me a better bargain.

People here seem to dislike the new version. I freaking love it. The new movement is a huge step forward. The wave dial is interesting and gives the watch a distinct look. When the previous version came out I was really bummed it was just a plain glossy dial. I even like the display case back. To each his own I guess. Maybe responses would be different if it were the black or blue version.

Savvy Life Strategies - 2012 to 2017 are the best years of the Seamaster 300m. Deep Black or Deep Blue Dial with the perfect Ceramic Bezel and very light numbering. Loved how the Seamaster evolved from the original. To me personally 2018 version is not the same anymore. Yes they brought back the wave dial and new movement etc. But look at the price jump now, the old version was the best bang for your buck luxury watch. Now it’s climbed up in price and very close to the Speedy.

Thanks for yet another great review TGV. I purchased the 2017 SMPc last year before finding out that it was getting updated... Have to admit I was a touch nervous about having bought the previous model once I discovered the update. Would have loved the newer in house movement in my SMPc (think that's why the case got bigger, to accommodate the greater size of the 8800), but after seeing the 2018 model breakdown in your video, I believe that the 2012-2017 model is a much classier watch. Keep up the good work Guvnor!

Always appreciate your insight, TGV! I've got a blue dial 2018 model on order, and cant wait to get it! I love display casebacks, so losing the engraving is no big deal for me, and I have 7 and a quarter inch wrist, so the size is fine for me as well. With the improved movement, the new version is just perfect for me. I only wish they had an applied logo! I believe you said there was a reason for not having it in the video, but I don't think you explicitly said what it was. Maybe to match the blued hands? But then why not have it on the other models with stainless hands? Consistency I suppose. Oh well!

After much, much consideration I recently got this in black with steel for my upcoming 40th. I've contemplated just about every so called luxury watch in the €3000 to €5000-ish range. Decided to go with the iconic blue face/ blue bezel 2018 300M Sea Master, all steel. Just something how the color really "pops" in the light, especially with the anti reflective coating. Had a Speed Master for several years.
This will be my first Sea Master, and automatic Omega.
The size is a considerable improvement for me. 8" wrist, and the older variants were a touch small.

I've been waiting all summer for this review. I bought the 2017 Seamaster for my 30th birthday in january this year and when they released the new one at basel i thought that i maybe made a mistake but after seeing it in person and your and a few other reviews i came to the conclusion to stick to my SMPc1. I like single parts on the new one like the more masculine bracelet and the push type clasp(which i upgraded later on on mine for reasonable money), the metas movement is outstanding but my 2500D is running very well at 3-5sec/24h and there are more things i like better on the old case style. I actually like the small crown better because the crownguards build such a beautiful curvature around the crown and the caseback is just as beautiful. I got a good discount at my local AD which met my expectations and i just have to say with the new higher price i may have had looked on a explorer or something else, for me and i am sure for many other the current Seamaster is a great luxury entry because of the price and the features, this may change in the future a bit because to ad another 1-2000€ can be the showstopper for potential customers.

You can't see these details in vids and pics the way you can if it's in your hand. I also went from strongly disliking the SMP bond bracelet, to absolutely loving the new bracelet! I love that they flattened out the links a bit. The only the I don't like is the new HE valve. Finally i'm back in England. I don't think Omega could sway me with 300m updates, I'm just simply in love with the 2000s James Bond version, it's currently my favourite watch. Great review as always and another awesome intro to add to the collection. If you could pick from any of the past seamsters, from the quartz goldeneye to this current model, which one would you choose?

After seeing only online photos, I was leaning towards the 2017 based on all the Gentry's criticisms of the case size, the dial, and the helium escape valve on the 2018. But then I saw both of them side-by-side at the AD. And for me, at least, the 2018 was the clear winner. The case size was small enough for my 7" wrist, the laser-cut waves were understated, and the helium escape valve was proportional to the crown. I did like the 2017, but for a $4400 watch, it just wasn't that visually interesting. I was afraid I'd get bored with it. So I bought the 2018 with the black dial and bracelet. I suggest the Gentry, even the ones not in the market for a Seamaster, check out the 2017 and 2018 at an AD while you still can. You might (or might not!) be surprised which one you prefer. And, of course, that's part of the fun of watches!

TGV you make so many high quality videos! This one is really up there in the classifica, great job. They certainly perfected the Seamaster 300 in 2018 for reasons you explained well, but they have not won over peoples taste.......YET? I own the original BOND Quartz since 2001, it has a charm and utility which has made it my all time favorite watch, getting the most wrist time, hands down.

I just opted for the 2017 seamaster I have a thin wrist and didn't want to go any larger. I also wanted the classic Seahorse back. Lastly I wasn't blown away by the wave dial. But I will say you can't go wrong with either one really.

To me the concern is not only the slight increase in size of the dial, but a 3mm increase lug to lug. Now 50mm. Will look odd on smaller wrists.

    Hi Tristano!
Wonderful iconic luxury diver, and equally iconic review in the highest level what I’ve ever experienced on youtube by watch reviewers. I’m just totally amazed about the quality and the impact of your words, the visual elements, the carefullness about all the details possible to tell and show about a horological instrument. I just truly happy and proud in a way that I use to find you here and started to follow you week by week. Wonderful, my friend! I just love it for sure.
Big thank and greetings: Robert :)

I agree with a lot of what you've said here, but I do wish they'd left the applied logo's and original He valve.
I'm not going to lie though I'm totally in love with my 2018, I went black on bracelet, and for me - it's perfect.
I think they've modernized really well it and it's brought it right up to date. I know you can't see much of the movement, but the display back was a big selling point for me, it's just nice to see. I still plan to pick up a late model previous iteration at some point, but it's not needed. For me, the 7 week wait from pre-order, was totally worth it! Good review TGV and totally agree with 99% of what you said. A lot of hate for it in the comments, but it's great in person. Each to their own though.

It's a beautiful watch. I thought it was a bit too subtle; the blue hands on the gray dial but the more i watched the more i liked it. Although, as a dive watch, wouldn't the blue hands get lost against the gray dial? I've always heard the preferred colors for deep sea divers is some kind of dark color hands on a yellow or orange dial. I, like most of the people here have multiple dive style watches which will never get very wet (unless i spill a martini on them or something). Anyway good vid the macro shots are great. You could really see the depth of the markers.

It's interesting the points you made regarding how its aesthetic resonates to you, as I felt exactly the same! And to be specific, how much you crave for that Bond nostalgia to come from that model you're showing - stainless steel with a blue ceramic bezel and grey dial. The reason being, when I tried the other stainless steel with black ceramic bezel and black dial, it completely changed my impression towards how it looks! In my opinion, at least, the waves are less busy on a black dial, depending on how the light hits them looks totally different. And about that Bond nostalgia? You can certainly get that from the black bezel and dial, not with the blue and grey model.

2012 to 2017 are the best years of the Seamaster 300m.

No matter the subject, I always look forward to The Urban Gentry's unique intro's and reviews. Good job TGV!
For this Seamaster, while some may like the changes from the previous version, they add more flash at the expense of class.
Being "TDB" (Too D*mn Big) doesn't help either.

I wished you reviewed the all blue bezel. It has the red lettering on the seamaster and has more of the nostalgic feel. I'm glad they didn't taper a 20mm braclet as I feel 20 is small enough on a case this size. Excellent review my friend. Keep it Gentry!

Both versions of the Omega Seamaster are beautiful watches. The one feature which I really admire aesthetically is the bezel with the scalloped bevels. I find that it streamlines the bezel to keep it from looking so clunky, the Omega bezel fairs nicely from bezel to crystal in one harmonious curve. It gives the optical appearance of thinness. The dial on the 2018 version is impeccable in its style and manufacture - job well done by Omega. I am not that enthralled with the hands though, not quite my cup of tea, but they are unmistakably Omega.
