Omega, way too many negative connotations associated with Rolex in the modern world - fine to wear a Rolex back when they were real tools (if Fleming had written Bond now there's no way he'd have a Rolex, wrong image entirely-maybe an apple watch or G-shock in the field) , but a way too negative image in the modern day. Rolex has somewhat abandoned its Tool Watch heritage in favor of Luxury branding, which gave the opening to Omega to swoop in and become Bond's, well, tool watch. When it comes to style & luxury, Omega is no slouch, but their identity, as demonstrated by their price point, is more about inclusivity rather than exclusivity. At the time the novels were written (and the first few films were made) Rolex were rugged watches for professionals.
They have since repositioned themselves as a luxury brand, but this was a result of the quartz crisis, and it's not really fair to criticize them for that.
The role of the watch has changed since then too, now we all have cellphones, so Bond probably wouldn't be as reliant on his timepiece as he would have been in the 50s and 60s.
I think he would probably still wear a watch, but he would want a 'quiet' watch; something pragmatic and subtle that wouldn't draw attention to him on a mission, so probably not a Rolex or an Omega. Maybe a Seiko or something. It might even be quartz.

The scene in Casino Royale when Vesper is attempting to profile Bond on the train summarises this argument. She says, "Former SAS types with easy smiles and expensive watches.... Rolex?", to which Bond quickly ripostes "Omega". In that moment, it is signalled that things have moved on, Bond has chosen Omega over Rolex. Clever piece of marketing, I'd like to know what it cost to write that line into the film.
For my own part, my first expensive watch was a Brosnan era Seamaster, as he rescued the franchise after an ageing Moore and a wooden Dalton almost did for Bond what Spectre have never quite managed.
However, the true Bond watch is and always will be the Submariner, To which end, I have subsequently bought one (no date, naturally). The main problem (in my mind) with Omega cementing themselves as the archetypal Bond watch is their desire to change Bond's watch in every film latterly; there's no consistency, no recognition. The Submariner was identifiable regardless of actor, it was as constant as his penchant for Vodka Martinis or his Walther PPK. During the Brosnan era, the blue-faced Seamaster Professional was showcased through its gadgetry, but since Craig has taken over the reins, he changes watches too often, purely to shift the latest model. For a character who is constantly on the move, I feel it unlikely that Bond would carry a spare watch for different occasions, nor spend his downtime between assignments flipping watches. But then again, Bond films always require you to check your preconceptions of reality at the door of the cinema.

Sean Connery will always be Bond and his style set a benchmark for the other actors and films to come. Most Bond film makers found they needed to return to the Fleming books when they found the series was going "off piste". The Rolex Explorer (Fleming's model) or the early Submariner given to him by the producers are in my opinion the true Bond watches. I'm saying that as someone who bought the Omega Seamaster from Brosnan's era. That's hard to say because I absolutely love the watch and it still holds that Bond connection whenever I wear it, but, I think to be true to Fleming that statement is true. Brosnan and Omega brought more to the table than Rolex did. The Seamaster Professional was so distinctive to anything seen before Omega would have no doubt sold lots of models without the Bond connection but it did them no harm whatsoever. Brosnan made the watch his own and made it more accessible to people to buy than a new Rolex. It did then and still does feel like a bond watch. The model Omega used carried good continuity for the first time through all 4 consecutive films. This is something they really haven't done before or since. Dare I say it Brosnan was probably the most successful actor playing the part since Connery and I think that is why Omega are now fully accepted into the Bond community except for the very hard core of fans who insist on Fleming's or Cubby's watch.

1 vote for Omega. And Aqua Terra, specifically. Though Rolex may have been first, Omega is legit.
From Jason Heaton, writing for HODINKEE (December 13, 2019): "Omega had a stint as official supplier to the Royal Navy and its form factor even became the Ministry of Defence’s standard, with its sword hands and a fully hashed bezel. In 1995, when the Bond franchise was rebooting with Pierce Brosnan, costume designer Lindy Hemming, chose Omega for the wrist of the hero partly because she remembers seeing a Seamaster on the wrist of a relative who was a Royal Navy man."

But honestly, the Sub was an excellent choice in the 60s, and the current Seamaster 300 matches the "elegant tool watch" look better than the current Submariner references thanks to little details like the painted indices and lack of crown guards. Whilst it is true that, in basic terms, the design of the Submariner and most Rolex models haven't changed much, there have been many little details that have been added that make it feel, to me, much more a "rich man's jewelry piece" than a working man's instrument. I have a similar feeling about Brosnan's Seamaster Professional, though admittedly it did suit him quite well.

Bond shouldn't drive BMWs and he shouldn't wear anything but a Rolex.
However: He liked the Rolex for practical reasons - and because he didn't have to pay for it himself (book-Bond wasn't rich). Question is: Would he still wear what Rolex has turned into? Not so sure. We all love the fact that he's a bit of an analogue man in our digital world, but I have a feeling that if Fleming was writing these books today, Bond would be wearing something completely different ... like, perhaps, even a G-Shock.

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  4 года назад +2

And that's the thing! The landscape of the brands now! I'm fairly confident he'd go after a much more obscure sports watch than the typical. GShocks would fit the build well, but maybe something with a bit more engineering behind it? Great point

I think they are both lovely watches. By this I am essentially talking about the Rolex Submariner and the Omega Seamaster. They are probably both similar in terms of the quality of their materials, design, and function. The differences are in the way they are marketed. In essence, Omega have got their foot in the door in terms of a collaboration with the movies, and now have eventually realised that they can release a special edition for each movie which will be desirable to movie fans and Bond fans, which will be to an extent limited, and which accordingly will have an inflated price tag. It is a great marketing strategy. Wouldn't Aston Martin have given Goldfinger whatever cars they wanted had they realised how big and timeless the Bond movie franchise would be? On the other hand, they got the association and kudos without that much investment - at the time. The Rolex marketing strategy is... well, I don't know what it is! If you are in the business of making money by selling the watches that you design and make, sooner or later you yourself are going to have to sell a few, rather than solely relying on a burgeoning preowned market to inflate the desirability of your brand: surely that is only half the battle if others are getting as much or more out of it than you are! Anyway, the desirability or otherwise of either of these marketing strategies will be probably what swings you. If you prefer the sense of ownership of a watch specifically marketed and tied to bond, limited, and associated with a particular movie, you'll go for Omega, but if you desire something that is hard to get hold of, and once you have it you are perhaps a member of a rather exclusive club, you'll go with Rolex, a brand who now will always be associated with Bond even if Bond himself never wears another Rolex. I know which side of the fence I am on!

Bond wears what is issued to him, but I think he has grown accustomed to high status time pieces, something an orphan would likely never have had the chance. Here is part of a definition that is fitting for Bond - the omega male is more introverted and isn't afraid of doing his own thing and making up his own rules in life. I would prefer Bond would choose Omega as a statement of who he is as a man, but Bond uses his time piece as a tool in the field and no matter what the brand Bond makes it his own.

Perhaps I've been conditioned by Brosnan's Bond but the Seamaster looks like it will be ready to shoot lasers or something of that sort, as mentioned in this video. Besides the model for Spectre, it just seems off for Craig's Bond.
I think Seiko/Pulsar that Roger Moore wore fits his Bond very well and the Tag Heuer suits Dalton's Bond extremely well too. And of course, the OG, Rolex fits in perfectly with Connery's Bond. Oo man, soon as I saw the title I knew it would be tough one to choose. Here goes: If we go with Ian Fleming's Bond, there is no doubt he should be rocking his rolex. Especially, his Explorer. But, if we go with the films...man it's Omega All the way.
And it's not even close. Starting with Sean Connery and all the way through Daniel Craig, they all should have been rocking Omega. Reason : Escalation. In every film, Bond has an opposite number. IE: The KGB, Spectre, Bloomfield, Goldfinger, Alec, etc...They all try to out due Bond by any means necessary. Bond always have to be one step a head. The Omega gives him that edge. True to the book Bond, he should only wear a Rolex. In the early Connery films, there was no endorsements. Rolex and Aston Martin did not supply Eon Productions with free props. They were just reliable tools that 007 used as part of his active lifestyle, chosen by Ian Fleming for the character. As the films got more ridiculous and unbelievable with gadgets, invisible cars, laser beams etc. Bond started wearing other brands and then eventually was endorsed by Omega. The Bond films then became a big marketing engine. True film making was lost as the films turned into a advertising campaign for product placement. This was probably not a bad thing for the film adaptaption of Bond as it probably saved the franchise. Prior to Golden Eye and the Brosnan Seamaster, the Bond films were losing traction. With Omega, the aggresive marketing gave Bond the boost it needed. But I agree with ID Guy. In my mind, Connery's iconic Submariner will always be the true Bond watch for me. Besides, if Connery's Rolex ever came up for sale at auction I guarantee it will match Paul Newman's Daytona in price. That can't be said about any Omega that goes under the hammer. Wouldn't even come close.
