      In the late 1800s, some Swiss watchmakers went to visit the watch factories in the US, where mass production with standardized parts was happening. They apparently were blown away by what they saw and couldn’t decide whether it was “real” watchmaking or not. I think an 1890 Waltham factory manager would look at Tudor’s operation and say, “Yep, good job!” 😊

    Tudor is a great brand, this video just solidifies it further for me. Value is just off the charts. Quick story about sub-supplier network. That concept of Tudor owned companies sub-supplying components is common in industry. I thought my story might be interesting as a perspective on this. I own a painting shop that works on Aerospace and military jobs (not watch industry at all). I had an offer once to get bought out partially and we'd be part of a network of suppliers that would deliver finished goods to big companies like Raytheon, Northrup etc. I ultimately chose to turn it down. My main reason was specific to the company that was spearheading the whole thing. I was doing work for them already and they couldn't pay their bills, always lied about payments etc. When I asked them where all this money is coming from to buy into several companies at the same time, they couldn't answer or dodged the question. Sketch of course. However, I probably would have turned it down if the money was there. My company was just a few years old, and although some guaranteed contracts would have been great, I banked on myself knowing the potential growth was much higher not being capped by demand of just a few customers. I had a steady base of customers already so made sense to me. Turned out to be right. That company who made me the offer is 250 days behind on payments to all their suppliers, including me, and still pulling that lying crap. My business is steadily growing 10-15% per year. Guess I made the right call.

    Coming from an engineering background and working with product consistency on a daily basis, seeing this gives me far greater faith in the Tudor product long term. While some comments are about the loss of "soul" I see this is as a way for them to control the product and make sure everything they sell is what they say it is. To me, it means I can rely on a Tudor watch day after day to not miss meetings and not worry about the accuracy of my watch over the course of a month or more.
    My Seiko runs 45sec slow a day, and while I love the style and ruggedness, I genuinely cannot rely on it for timekeeping after a week due to that inaccuracy and have actually arrived late to things due to it. While I love the romantic idea of a watchmaker making each watch by hand, I just know the reality of that is inconsistency between watch units, or a massively higher price to allow for remediation work at the end of assembly to bring it in-line with performance specifications.
    Tudor makes watches that are beautiful, but not art. They're meant to function. Other brands make art that are watches, and are meant to be admired, not necessarily relied upon

    Great presentation and work, Adrian! I have a feeling that Rolex probably does the exact same thing as Tudor regarding highly automated assembly, but perhaps doing more in-house fabrication of component parts. A more physically integrated supply chain, but most likely the same sort of robotic assembly process. If that’s the case, then Tudor is the far more fairly priced of the two brands.

    • @KingPrawn666
      @KingPrawn666 Год назад +8

      Was just thinking the same. Assuming Rolex are doing the same thing, they are essentially mugging everyone off. No one will be upset with Tudor given the price point but it does make you question the gap between Rolex and other higher end brands.

    • @nxpj2flyers517
      @nxpj2flyers517 Год назад +1

      Rolex might have assembly automation, but everything is sourced and done in-house. It's not an assembly line there where parts ship in from different factories, and they're assembled in a sequential order in-house. Rolex makes the parts for their watches and then assembles them, which means they have full control over their product lines. But in order to pump out a million watches a year.. they're not building the parts by hand. So a Rolex is still a more special watch than Tudor, even if Tudor has a leg up being METAS certified, not just COSC certified.

    You talk about the way that robotic assembly helps keep cost down by automating time consuming processes - like attaching the hands. But I'll bet that Rolex uses just as much automation in their processes. In fact I'd imagine that being the same company, the Rolex assembly lines look pretty much identical to these at Tudor. A Rolex probably doesn't cost that much more to make than a comparable Tudor, granted the Rolex cases and bracelets are in house, and finishing levels are (marginally) higher. But the marketing spend for Rolex will be in a different league, and much of the higher Rolex retail price will be needed to recoup it. We know from the grey market that Rolex could charge significantly more that they do and would not lose sales, and thus we know that brand cachet does much more for profit margins than any manufacturing cost savings can create.

    My Tudor will be 4 years old in December. I bought the Pelagos LHD instead of the North Flag, which I still love, but didn't buy at the time because of the sharp edges on the top. My Pelagos still goes -2 seconds/day regardless of which hand I wear it on (98 % the left) and in what position I've left it overnight. In that line of thought, my Pelagos is also METAS without having a certificate. I work with electronics all day and privately I make loudspeakers with 2 Tesla chassis. My Tudor has been on my hand for 4 years continuously, with the exception of Saturdays and Sundays when I take it off to put on another watch, mostly a smart one for sports. The quality of this watch is killer. Tudor is what I expect from a brand, strength, reliability, quality and precision. The brand itself, whether it is called Longines Rolex, Seiko or Patek, does not concern me so much, the main thing is that the design appeals to me and meets my aesthetic demands, the quality, strength and precision. I claim that if a watchmaker was found to set my watch to 0 sec/day, he would keep them for 4 years as he keeps these - 2 sec/day. It's called isochronism.

    We're definitely heading into times where a lot more in the watchmaking process will be automated. It's not only the cost efficiency but it's really hard to find a watchmakers these days and their hourly rates are really high.

    Adrian, thanks so much for showing us how Tudor makes it watches. If I did not know you were in Switzerland, I would have thought the factory is in Japan. You asked if this changes our perception of the Tudor brand, and it definitely does! I wanted to buy a Rolex Daytona, but realized only a few customers are ever going to get them from the AD, so I bought the Tudor Panda Chronograph when it was first announced. I absolutely love wearing it, and am thrilled that it is a high quality product!
    I am wondering if you asked Tudor if there are any restrictions on developing designs that may compete against sister Rolex. Essentially, is Tudor free to design a watch without consulting Rolex for permission? If you did not ask, can you speculate from conversations you had while on tour at the factory?
    P.S. Absolutely brilliant comment you made at 0:24 : "it's a day after, 'yesterday'!" Simply brilliant!

    Somehow I always liked Tudor because of the quality of their watches and the down to earth mentality, I could never afford a Rolex and there is no pain there because I'd rater buy a Tudor and after seeing this that feeling is even stronger!! Great video!!

    Very well done video and also quite expected from Tudor. They are the value proposition in the market right now, especially with brands like Omega and Grand Seiko jacking up their prices.
    Pretty soon Tudor will have in-house movements that are METAS certified and in increasingly slimmer and more refined cases. If they stick to their largely-under-$5k price point, then they are going to gobble up market share like you wouldn’t believe.
