Trey Lance was the third overall pick at the 2021 NFL Draft, but his time with the San Francisco 49ers may be numbered after Brock Purdy was named the starter by Kyle Shanahan.

As soon as the 49ers drafted Lance 3rd overall, I thought they were taking a huge gamble doing so. He played college football in the FCS. I'm not saying an FCS QB can't eventually become successful in the NFL, I just think he should've been a 3rd or 4th round draft pick, NOT 3rd overall.

This is a bad take. He had the most dominant season by a fcs freshmen qb ever. He also has first round quality physical traits. Hes just really unlucky.

Listening to the just pre-draft talk, my opinion was that unless Lance was taken no earlier than the middle of the first, he was going to be a bust for whoever took him. Not that he wouldn't pull a Drew Brees or at least an Alex Smith and become at least a solid starter for some other team.

He's just not good. QB's in the fcs aren't having to read top college defenses, it's a big difference even at that level. Please watch a game or two before making such horrible statements.

If he doesn’t see something, he uses his feet, but he’s not super fast, that why he has to run up the middle and not on the outside. He doesn’t want to mess up, he doesn’t want to get injured and I think that’s why he’s really not doing so well. Slow progressions, holding on to the ball, not willing to take chances, he’s not running, he’s literally not playing like himself. it’s the preseason, he has a cannon, use it! He has been so hesitant to throw the ball in tight windows, but also missing obvious open guys, and taking a sack instead. I just hope he calms himself takes a chance on himself. If he can’t play, he can’t play, and I’m neutral I don’t care who plays as long as they win. I don’t want to hear that “ Brock fan” or “ Trey fan” crap. Brock’s got problems too, just not as many.

There have only been 2 seasons in the last decade where the 49ers were able to start the same QB every game for the entire season, and they went to the NFC championship both those times. Keeping a healthy QB for the full schedule is a tall order for every team in any season, and the 49ers pass blocking does not give one a ton of comfort.

Been watching the NFL since the 80s. There have been some QBs that come in and get real hot for a while. The question is can they sustain it. Eventually teams see you enough, they get the tape and figure you out more. There's also the issue of if that player can stay healthy enough to be a long term solution.
Again, I weigh it both ways but frankly I'm happy that Purdy has shown what it takes to lead the team. I'd rather have the optimistic future we have now than having nothing but question marks and seeing nothing but bad play. He's playing good and I hope he gets even better. As the video states, the only true consistent weakness of the 49ers in the Shannahan era is QB play.

Unfortunately, this is the reality of playing football in the pros. It only takes one slip-up or injury, and you're out. Teams want results, and if someone is not willing to pull the weight, they are out, plain and simple. While I will not put the "bust" label on Lance just yet, one of the reasons players end up as busts is availability, specifically a lack of it. A serious injury can derail a career, especially leg injuries, given the fast-paced offense of today's NFL landscape. As mentioned, one slip-up or injury, and there will be someone ready to take your place. If he flops, you still have a chance to salvage your career, but if the guy did just as well or even better than you, the writing is on the wall.

You have no idea how intelligent Trey Lance is who is a student of the game and studies the field during his first couple of possessions to learn how he will proceed in the next possessions to be successful in putting points on the board. Isn't it points on the scoreboard that matters in a football game. If Trey's last touchdown pass counted after his buddy messed up and ran onto the field, Trey would have put 18 points on the scoreboard, twice as many as all the other quarterbacks combined who put 9 points on the board. Since Trey had only 12 points of the 28 points on the board during those games, and Brock, Sam and the bench warmer putting only 9 points on the board, the rest of the points ( 7 ) were by Moody kicking for the 1 point after a touchdown and a couple of field goals. So Trey and Moody combined for 19 of those points.

People don't realise just how long the Niners will be around for. The salary cap increase in a few years will come right at the peak of contracts and their stars will already be locked down. It's very likely this team continues competing for the next seven or eight years even without an elite quarterback. They've been elite at replacing guys that are above average over the years (usually with late round picks somehow) other than DeForest Buckner. They're going to be scary into the 2030's, so they have plenty of time. The question is whether or not they can put the pieces together and make it worthwhile. They may have the strongest case to make for being a potential dynasty with the guys they have locked down, but they just haven't done anything with that power. This team is capable of winning the next six or seven Super Bowls in a row and have been that way for years now, but they just never get the job done. I fear this will be one of those "one of the greatest teams to never win a chip" stories we look back on.

It's not surprising Lance looked rusty and slow. He hasn't played a full season of football since 2019 thanks to Covid and injuries. I agree he might be one of those players that needs to just be out there getting experience, but the 49ers don't have that luxury of the growing pains. If Darnold looks like a capable backup, it's time to see if they can trade Lance to a team that could use a young prospect.
I do think Kyle Shanahan is somehow cursed and might always just get tantalizingly close to winning it all but have weird things happen along the way.

  • @Bewbscueser

Three first round picks is going rate for a good NFL starting QB, not a mystery box from North Dakota. The reason they burned those picks was to bring in a guy with elite physical traits. As well as Purdy played at some point his physical limitations will create the same dilemma Shanahan had with Jimmy G. I'd be very careful selling low on Lance. If they flip Lance and Purdy isn't actually Joe Montana those three first round picks will come back to haunt Shanahan especially since Justin Fields was just as talented as Lance with a lot more experience against better competition.

    • @johnchedsey1306

I suppose it does make a certain kind of sense that the most important position in team sports is so difficult to evaluate. One year everyone wants raw physical tools because Mahomes and Josh Allen. The next year a leader of men with great "intangibles" goes number one because great tools just aren't enough. At the end of the day it's throwing darts at a board.

      @Bewbscueser 8 месяцев назад

@@joeking433 That's exactly my point. It's almost impossible for his value to plummet any further. At this point you'd basically have to give him away. Even if he carries a clipboard all year it's not like his value can go any lower. Whatever they get for him is not going to help them win now. If they want to flip him in the off season that option will still be there.
Also I wouldn't be so quick to just write him off. In terms of game experience he's barely beyond a rookie. He was drafted on the basis of elite physical traits. Shanahan felt that he had gone as far as he could with Jimmy G. As well as Purdy played last year he's basically in the same mold with the same limitations. Maybe he's the second coming of Tom Brady but it's far more likely that at some point his physical limitations will hold him and the 49ers offense back. That offense is loaded and at some point that roster will become prohibitively expensive. When that happens Purdy will not be able to elevate them on his own.
I'm not saying that Lance will develop, odds are he will fail just like most QB prospects fail. My point is that there is no upside to moving on from him.
