  • Brock Purdy and Jimmy Garoppolo play quarterback at the same exact level. This might be surprising to hear with all the hype surrounding Purdy, but if you look at their stats and how Kyle Shanahan structured the offense, there is no difference between the two QBs. In what ways are they so similar? This week’s episode uses the all-22 coaches film to analyze Brock Purdy and Jimmy Garoppolo’s play on the San Francisco 49ers.

    So Brock Purdy, in his rookie year essentially had similar stats to Jimmy G, who was a 9th year QB who had started in a Super Bowl. This to me is a strong indicator that Purdy has a lot of yet untapped upside potential, given what he was able to do in his rookie year. Brock Purdy is still a young work-in-progress that realistically can improve greatly with experience, while Jimmy G clearly has a large enough body of work for us to know Jimmy G's true ceiling. I'd happily take Brock Purdy over Jimmy G at this point in their respective careers.

      That's because Purdy can avoid the rush, hes very evasive. Jimmy is a statue that has to force throws to avoid sacks. Jimmy is also unwilling to look downfield so his options are limited. I appreciate you and your work Alex. A simple comment cannot contain the things I disagree with this video on, and would instead say that the way Kurt Warner & JT O'Sullivan broke down Jimmy vs how they break down Brock - and the words they use when doing so - say everything that needs to be said.
    When watching Jimmy, we hear lot of, "I'm not in the QB room, so I don't know exactly what they are teaching, but (X, Y, and Z) doesn't make sense to me."
    When they talk about Brock, not only is that never said, but the exact opposite. They comment on the fluidity of his movements and processing and how it all fits together. When Brock makes mistakes, there isn't that bewilderment in tone and word choice which they use with Jimmy, but rather they say they understand why the mistake was made and in processing and how they wpuld like to see it done better from the perspectives of veteran QBs.
    Not a sexy one sentence hot take, but 🤷‍♂️. Much love.

Mark Sanchez and Jared Goff, and Kyler Murray are the first guys that comes to mind. He does objectively have some things Jimmy doesn't. He is insanely quick, like his 10 yard split is the same as Christian McCaffrey, super high percentile of QBs, only a few active QBs have better 10 yard splits than BCB. That gives him high key incredible mobility to make plays outside the pocket, juke defenders, etc...While his arm isn't special or anything, he at least appears to the eye to have a bigger arm than Jimmy and or more willing to go deep. Maybe it's not Herbert 60 yards down the field, but it's good enough for 25-30 yard passes down the field, which Jimmy rarely attempted. That said, I of course want Trey Lance to get a shot and see what the 49ers have or don't have with him, and I don't want the 49ers to get rid of Lance when they could have something special.

The point of the video is not that it wasn’t impressive that he is a starter, it rather questions if his skillset is enough for the 49ers to go all the way.
      He is an absolutely capable starter, but wasn’t jimmy also?

    I think the key differences between the two based on the eye test are:
    1) Poise. Jimmy is generally thought of as a game manager due to his limited upside and yet makes a ton of turnover-worthy plays due to panicking. Brock certainly had his own lucky breaks but you would expect more of a difference between a 7th round rookie and a vet.
    2) Mobility. The ability to just extend plays behind the line of scrimmage is so valuable in today's NFL. While Brock isn't gonna scare defenses running downfield, the few times when his o-line lets him down don't automatically lead to a sack or turnover like they do with Jimmy.

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W 11 месяцев назад +2

      QB mobility is a huge factor IMO in Shanahan's offense. Sometimes the pocket will be messy but the Niners talents around the perimeter are so good that you gotta give em a lil more time to get the space when the defense coverage is onto them. Trey Lance held that promise but that is only on paper if he can't keep building reps on the field due to injuries.

    One thing that's hard to diagnose on tape but is absolute a huge plus for Purdy over Jimmy is his ability to adjust placement mid-throw.

    Great breakdown. Would love to address several points.
    1. The defense argument - the defense absolutely reached a new level once Purdy stepped in, and their added production reflected in the score. But it's also true that with the offense rolling even more, the defense was given more opportunity to beat up on opposing teams once they fell behind. I think it plays both ways here, not just "the defense gave the ball to Purdy more often."
    2. The INTS - Jimmy and Purdy both finished with the same TD-INT ratio. But I don't think that's fair at all. One of Purdy's INTs was a deep shot while mopping up a blowout to the Chiefs at the end of the game. Another was a 50/50 ball on a fourth down in plus territory that ended up being an arm punt. One bounced off his receiver's chest, and the last was flat-out a bad throw. He was way, way more secure with the ball in the air than Garoppolo, which is a huge reason the offense felt better. Of course, in football, you're going to get INT-worthy throws that fall safely and great throws that get picked, but I think he has a little more here than he's gotten credit for.
    3. Statistical regression is (probably!) incoming, as you said - it's hard for a quarterback on a half-season hot streak to keep that up full-time into next year (see, Jimmy G [2017] and Geno Smith [2022]). But Purdy's also a first-year rookie. That bodes much better for his long-term ceiling than Jimmy G entering his, what, ninth year in the league?
    Thanks for the continued great content. Looking forward to the next one.

    0:49 Yes, their 2022 stats are essentially the same. However, the crucial context there is that we're comparing Purdy's rookie season to essentially Garoppolo's *best* season. Those stats pretty much represent the ceiling for Garoppolo, but for Purdy they're, if not exactly the floor, something we'd expect him to build off of. I also disagree with your point that Purdy can't progress beyond his first read or two on a play; I've watched other analysis videos that show numerous examples where Purdy makes important plays by finding his 3rd read - he did this twice for TDs in the wild-card game alone. He also has demonstrated excellent ability to learn from mistakes both from one game to the next and within games.
    I agree that Garappolo was a good quarterback overall. I think Purdy demonstrated he was approximately as good as Garappolo, but with the potential to get even better. Ultimately, the reason the 49ers let Jimmy walk had nothing to do with hating or undervaluing him - it was simply that they figured Purdy offered them at least the same capability at a fraction of the cost, and they've got plenty of other uses for that money.

    Great video. It's definitely going to ruffle some feathers since Brock's wholesome story is still in it's honeymoon phase, but I'm glad you put this out there, because it's not that outlandish of an opinion. The folks at PFF were essentially saying the same thing this entire time as his passing grade charts similarly to what Jimmy's output was, while acknowledging he did add slight value with his mobility. I'm a 49ers fan, and while his rise has been really exciting for the last pick of the draft, I don't have a feeling he'll be the next megastar in the league at the QB position. He's on a dynamite roster with maybe the best offensive coach in the league. And that's ok, as it doesn't invalidate what he's done as he's still miles better than some other guys that have been around with Shanahan like Beathard or Hoyer. I'm really just happy he's on a rookie deal, and I will say that watching the games I felt a lot more comfortable with him in the saddle than Lance. Jimmy G sadly wore out his welcome with the fanbase, but if the 49ers have another younger, cheaper, and not injured riddled Jimmy QB than that's a win. He's already injured though, so who knows how his recovery will shake out. I'm hoping for more of the same, and that he's not a flash in the pan. Appreciate the spotlight on the red and gold. He ruined RG3, got Trey Lance injured, complained about JG incessantly yet could never move off him. He keeps drafting mediocre QBs like Mullen’s and Beathard and becomes completely obsessed with back up quarterbacks. His original plan was start BRIAN HOYER and then wait for KIRK COUSINS. Shanahan is ridiculous and CANNOT scout, draft, or evaluate the QB position. If he really wanted a Super Bowl he would have been more aggressive for Stafford or Rodgers or Brady, literally any competent veteran QB, but the big secret is that he doesn’t want an elite quarterback because he wants the credit for winning with a mediocre quarterback and that’s why he’ll never win a Super Bowl.
    Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.

      I think Purdy is better now, but the Jimmy video wasn't really supposed to be a negative like Jimmy intended. Jimmy was top 5 in y/a like every year he played in SF

    A lot of teams wish their 1st round QBs could measure up to Jimmy Garoppolo after half a rookie season. Way too early to start declaring things like "Brock likes to hold onto the ball too long", as if that's not something every rookie QB goes through.

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W 11 месяцев назад +1

      I agree on this. Jimmy played the best standard of what a pocket QB should do in the modern NFL to attack the middle of the field that even most first round rookies can't do. So if Brock is capable of doing that while adding better pocket mobility and recognizing coverages better, he's prepped to surpass that floor that many 1st~3rd round QBs can't even clear.

    • @joeynickles7962
      @joeynickles7962 10 месяцев назад

      He literally did hold on to the ball too long on numerous occasions. Is that common for a rookie? Very. Does he absolutely need to get better at getting the ball out on time? 100%. And his elbow reminds him of that every day I’m sure.

    BS. Purdy is the same kind of QB as Jimmy G but better in every facet of the game. He has much better awareness, is more composed, better at letting plays develop, has better late reads, can scramble, improvise and makes less mistakes. The stats offer a very narrow comparison.

  • @GlobalWarmingSkeptic

    I think Brock Purdy is a case of some intangible factor that simply made them better. Garoppolo was better than people give them credit for, but Purdy seemed to play better when he needed to.

    I love how people get mad when they call Brock jimmy 2.0 but the proof is the pudding. Also they were moving off jimmy because he couldn’t stay healthy and they kept insisting they needed a starting quarterback that can play a full season, they went after Rodgers they went after Watson they ended up with lance and now they wanna pívot from lance for a guy that had 2 injuries in 8 games lol

    Little doubt that Purdy went to the right scheme for him. That being said, why Purdy over Garoppolo? Former is on a rookie contract while the latter was expensive and injury prone. Pretty simple.

    We will see where Brock Purdy ends up following this year, but his stats last year were wildly more efficient that Jimmy G. The same TDs in less games started and less sacks raises the level of the offense.

  • @eliteteamkiller319
    @eliteteamkiller319 11 месяцев назад +1

    Purdy is more athletic than Garoppolo and can do more with off platform throws. More importantly, he completes more deep passes. To compare, Jimmy G's Completed Air Yards per Pass Attempt last year was 3.2. Purdy's CAY/PA meanwhile was 3.9, which, by the way, was higher than Mahomes' 3.7 CAY/PA.

    Some of yall getting caught with your feelings after hearing this.😂
    All of that aside, if you move pass his hype this is what Purdy is, at least for right now could he get better of course he can. Alex isn't lying in what he's saying there were int's that should've picked off (fortunately they weren't), good bit of his throws were to wide open receivers, and I'm pretty sure the stats he gave us anyone can find for themselves and see whether he's lying or not. All I'm saying is we need to pump the brakes on Purdy because this season whenever he plays the defenses will be ready for him unlike last year because now they got a good amount of tape on him.

  • @Deebosamuel19
    @Deebosamuel19 11 месяцев назад

    Alex, in no way should he have had 5 more picks. He probably should have had 3 more but he also had 2 that shouldn’t have been picks or were arm punts on 3rd/4th. Normalizing everything, he probably should have had 2 more total. The fact that he looks downfield first and then works his way back, unlike Jimmy who literally doesn’t look deep at all is what opened the offense up. Jimmy has benefitted from an elite defense (2019 was absolutely better than last year) every season and still pissed away countless possessions because of his abject inability to go deep.
    Additionally, their numbers are pretty similar with Brock getting 0 first team reps and as a rookie, and Jimmy as a 10 year vet. Just taking a few deep chances and having the ability to extend plays and do something off schedule is what makes th offense elite. One of those TDs behind the LOS was when Brock danced around several pass rushers to whip to a wide open CMC (or Mitchell I’d have to rewatch the play) for the walk in TD. When’s the last time we had a QB that could routinely find the check down out of the backfield? Those plays are super valuable when used correctly because they’re very low risk with medium reward, and since Garcia we haven’t had a single qb that possessed both the athleticism to extend plays, and the vision/accuracy to find that wide open man. Kaep and Jimmy each had different halves of that equation and we watched as an endless array of wide open HBs were overlooked.
    Brock isn’t gonna be a HOF level next season, he probably won’t even be all pro. But if he matches last season process wise, with slightly worse results due to regression, this offense is still gonna be top 5 and far more consistent than it was with Jimmy. Most of the time brock got us a nice early lead and then KS would sit on it. Jimmy at best would get a 10 point lead and then fall apart the rest of the game. This isn’t baseball where you can isolate numbers to really tell a story, advanced stats have always been really kind to Jimmy, but no defenses respected him. The fact he took significantly less than Daniel Jones and played last year at what was essentially a rookie wage shows you how the football world thinks of Jimmy.

    Jimmy Garoppolo has been in the NFL for 9 seasons... Brock Purdy was a 7th round rookie nobody and just looked like fire... you could see the team rally around him... everyone who watched it saw it. Just the fact that Purdy could come in as a 7th round rookie, the very last guy picked in the draft, who was leading the scout offense in practice and not even practicing with the offensive game plan and look in most people's opinion considerably better than a 9 year veteran QB who as you put it has been to super bowls and nfc championships is remarkable in my opinion... I like Jimmy but he is fragile, and too easy going, and no edge to him... Purdy just has this fire and quiet confidence to him. Montana Esque

    Alex, i agree with you. but for me that's a good thing. Shannahan system with 49ers in the last years doesn't have many go route, deboo is amazing, but not a 9-only WR.
    Shanny did the right thing to keep the system at it was, and don't change it for the third time in a season.
    Then, you have that Purdy is as good as a 9th year veteran. The arm to sling on deep was been shown. If he recovers from UCL injury, the best is yet to come

    As the other commenters are pointing out, the fact that an NFL rookie came in and played "the same" as a 9 year vet doesn't mean they're the same. Also, Kyle played a fraction as much play action with Purdy because he trusts him to run more of his offense.

  • @anthonyhilton4168
    @anthonyhilton4168 11 месяцев назад +1

    Well, thing is like you said, they were both pressed into service on the fly without the benefit of being “the guy”, for the whole season.
    But the real story of the SF Qb odyssey is that all of you analysts jumped up and down salivating over Lance and we all see how that played out. 😂
    I advocated for Mac Jones to the 49ers which with his processing ability would have turned the 49er offense into the equivalent of the Falcon offense that nearly won a Super Bowl.
    Had they taken Jones the 49ers would have won at least one ring by now.

    A rookie in this system is great, he played to what was expected. He ran the system with his strengths. For a scheme that is complex Shanahan, this was expected. I didn't expect him to do more. And the CPOE (while a little under ~3%) proves that. That's why we got Trey. The QB should run the scheme and exceed it. His legs and his arms alongs people to add more than just the dig and pin, etcs where some Go balls from 2016 Falcons can come in.

    Brock was carried by a group of superstars. Put him at qb without George kittle, brandan aiyuk, deebo Samuel, juan jennings, CMC, and an elite OL with arguably the best left tackle ever, and he’d be below average. Also helps that he had a top 5 defense too.

    Interesting analysis. We'll see what happens when Purdy is given the whole year (crossing fingers). I believe you're are right about Jimmy "Cement Legs" Garoppolo :) I'm going to watch how he does behind an average O-line in the Raiders. Basically, you can't put the game on Garoppolo's back and tell him to win it for you. With Purdy, I believe there is a chance.
