In the nearly four full games Purdy's played since Jimmy's foot injury on 12/4, this 7th round kid leads the NFL during that period with a 110 passer rating. I get the haters, get the doubters but you gotta admit this story has gone from cool to crazy. Go ask Broncos fans how they like QBs that DON'T play within the system. I remember a couple of pretty good QBs who worked "within the system" named Montana and Brady, so I'm not sure why this is a dis these days.
Also, if his "regression" as you say, is all over the film, I'd look back at that, bc his stats say differently. He got injured vs TB and almost didn't start at SEA, but still hit over 65% of his passes/8.3 AVG/117 RTG (RTG & AVG would be #1 if he played out like that). Better than his MIA outing, btw. Against WSH over 68%/10.6 AVG/114 RTG (all #1), and that D is top 5 (btw those #s were better than Hurts, Cousins, Rodgers, & Lawrence did against WSH). I like your vids, but you do fall into a pattern with your narratives. Stay nimble Alex, on your toes, keep looking downfield, and we'll check back around Valentine's Day to see if you see something I don't.
On his pressure to sack rate: Obviously quick release and quick reads is a big part of this, but his athleticism is surprising. He has an elite 10 yard split (1.55, 95th percentile among QBs), so while he doesn't have top end speed (mediocre 4.8 40), his acceleration is similar to a 4.3-4.4 40 yard runner. It's uncanny how often he gets a guy in his face and absolutely bursts away and gets rid of the ball. When it comes to evading rushers, pressuring the line of scrimmage and stretching the defense horizontally, he's up there with anyone.
But he hit the deep post against WAS last week? Likewise he hit the deep wheel route against Tampa. I love how you featured his footwork. You made a point I've been all about with him: he leaves his base "available" for the deep shot. That's something JG doesn't do. Ultimately, I hope the NFL world sees that a QB doesn't have to win a shootout to win the SB. This Niner defense deserves to be discussed among the greatest ever, and will make Brock's job a little easier
Last game Purdy threw a touchdown from the 49ers 40. He threw it to the front of the end zone. Someone else in the comments had the distance more correctly but he did it, and he did it still injured
This is a good example of Brock getting analyzed differently than other rookie QBs. There's a built in bias it seems. Historically, if a rookie was playing this well everybody mainly focuses on the player's upside. They don't ignore the downside but it's usually brushed off as "he's a rookie, he'll get better." Brock, even after what he's done, is still getting pessimistic coverage for the most part. Hard for people, even Alex it seems, to look past size and draft position even if there's plenty of historical evidence to do so. I appreciate the in depth look at his downsides though. Most others have just disregarded him with very little analysis. My prediction, he's the 49er starter for the foreseeable future but he probably loses the nfc championship or the super bowl in what will probably end up being his first shootout with the eagles or chiefs.
I think the difference here is that even though it’s unfair, Purdy is in a position that most rookie QBs don’t find themselves in: playing for a contender. Obviously he’ll develop within the next couple years, but he doesn’t have the time to develop within the next month
Yes. And also i think it's easier and safer to bet the under. What rookie comes out and does this? They bet on him failing. I see a poise in this kid not many have
@@Kobejp8 I just look at Mahomes and the coverage he got. He was put in a very similar situation as Purdy, one could argue even better because he got to sit and learn for a year, and he has gotten positive coverage since he first game before we knew what he would become
Tank Sports predicted Brock’s success days before this years draft. He systematically laid out all the qualities Brock possesses and how he would use it given the right conditions. Under the then circumstances, Tank predicted Brock could go to Pittsburgh and work his magic. Niners thought otherwise.
Mac couldn't find the right read quick enough for cover zero vs the Dolphins, when they did it to Brock he recognized quickly anticipated knowing he's either gonna take a hit regardless and deliver the ball
Purdys footwork, being able to throw on the run from multiple angles, leads the receivers, confident, leadership skills and a handful of intangibles are going to make this kid a star for years barring injury. Purdy is only improving there is no regression in his game. People forget he’s playing injured due to another one of his abilities which is toughness. This dudes opinion seems like a copy of most Purdy critics. Fails to mention Purdys amazing 10 yard split time, the fact that the Niners are averaging 10pts more than they had with Jimmy G, that the 2 games he blasted were without Deebo and Purdy has found a way to get Kittle involved in the passing attack far more than before. The chemistry Purdy and Kittle have developed is scary
Alex, 9:21 - The throw to Kittle for a TD where Ray Ray was also in the endzone was a perfect Post read and throw. How can you say he "Can't hit them or is too scared to throw it"?
I think ur final take was in poor taste. He was playing through an oblique and rib injury that had josh johnson ready to go if need be. Also this is by far the best roster in the league and better than their 2019 roster
As others have pointed out, Purdy was playing with an oblique and rib injury against the Seahawks and Commanders. That's probably why his game was off a bit. Yes, Purdy does not have a huge arm, but he does have far more deep TDs and completions than Jimmy, in far fewer games.
Brock Purdy is 10x better at executing this 49ers offense than Jimmy G. This video completely ignores his oblique injury in the Seattle game which was during a short week. He barely practiced and still executed when they needed him. If a 1st round pick QB does that scouts will be praising him. But when Brock Purdy does it means he’s not ready to lead a team to the SB? Brock Purdy has completely revitalized this 49ers offense and has elevated Kyle Shanahan’s play-calling. He is the perfect system QB which Brady was and he won 7x super bowls with that. Tired of scouts writing off prospects because they can’t throw a 100mph heater that most receivers can’t catch anyway.
This guy has the poise in the pocket, and the leadership that a qb needs. We all know he has the mechanics. The team is ready to win now with all the weapons on offense and the best defense in the nfl. If you don’t think he take us all the way to the Super Bowl you are trippin. Blitz all you want and Purdy will pick you apart
Yup, that Seahawks game before they injected him with pain meds, he could barely throw past 10 yards. He had oblique and rib injury from the Buccs game just 4 days earlier.
Can't take the conclusion of this analysis seriously when you ignore the fact that Brock has been playing with a significant oblique and rib injury the past 2 games. I mean, do we see Jalen "he heals faster than you" Hurt out there right now?
awesome vid! very fair assessment, hopefully the regression is from his oblique injury which he had recovered from now. teams finally have film on him now, hopefully he can stand up to the test, more 49ers vid please.
Every QB misses throws, has fails in footwork, and can be picked apart like this. Honestly, he's still performing at the same high level he was at after you claimed his fundamentals started falling apart. Sometimes misses are just misses and are not indicative of an immediate regressions ESPECIALLY if they're still moving the ball with gusto.
My impression of Purdy is that he’s a winner. I always thought Jimmy G was a high floor low ceiling type. The moment was never too big for him but he was consistently inconsistent. With Trey Lance, it was the exact opposite - low floor high ceiling. I always thought Trey Lance was in over his head with flashes of athleticism. Purdy looks like what I always imagined a young Joe Montana looked. Purdy may or may not ever reach the same ballpark as the Mount Rushmore of QBs, but I’m excited to watch the journey.
Can't throw the deep post, yet against Washington he threw 45 yards IN THE AIR and perfectly hit Kittle for TD. Granted Kittle "stole" that catch, but Ray Ray was right there as well and the result would have been the same. This proves he indeed CAN make that throw.
Plus his side arm quick throw right at the beginning of the game was a thing of beauty as well. Without that adjustment it's tipped at the very least, maybe worse
Uh, did you not see the deep post he threw to McCloud that George kittle got in front of for a TD? I thought the Washington game might have been his best. He didnt have much of a run game to lean on
Fair and balanced. We'll have to keep an eye out for that skinny deep post. I've maintained that while he's been hot out of the gates, we can't consider him a true talent until he shows development and improvement on his weaknesses. There's a reason he went nearly undrafted, and once he gets figured out he'll have to prove he has staying power. Until then let's go Brock!
I have to disagree on a couple things. I think the Seahawks game and commanders game is more important. Because when he made mistakes he would immediately come back and start playing good. He is really good at recognizing his mistakes and corrects them. I think we expect him to not make any, when is reality him being a rookie he will make mistakes. But I love his IQ and how he corrrcts them. In the commanders game his first half wasn’t so good. But after halftime he came out guns blazing. His arm is strong and he showed it. I think he plays it off like he doesn’t. I believe we got real talent in the making
The raiders game was full of this. This was the first game where the pressure was really on Purdy specifically to catch up with the Raiders' offense which was having a good day at the office. He made some mistakes but in the second half he put the team on his back and came through repeatedly in the clutch. This is the kind of experience that is huge for a rookie's development and it says many good things about Purdy which we wouldn't have learned if every game went to plan.
Brock Purdy wasn't a NOBODY! He was among the elite QB's in the Big XII. The issue with him and Iowa State was the team AND himself came up small when the stakes were at their highest. He even beat my OU Sooners twice while in college. Like most of the QB's that came out of the Big XII, they just needed time to adjust to the speed of the game and limit interceptions. Purdy shouldn't have dropped as far as he did, but give the Niners doing b their due diligence and making a calculated gamble, they got the QB steal of the draft.
Hmm I wonder what would hinder his throws the last two weeks? Maybe an oblique and bruised ribs injury? Knowing that it makes his last 2 games even MORE impressive
I think the throw at 7:48 was more an indictment on his arm then his feet. Footwork was clean on that Read play. Pocket was moved. He even read the coverage the same way Aiyuk did and threw it on time. He just couldn't step into it and had to drive it and couldn't get it there
Really unfortunate to get severe injury... Brock Purdy showed more than Jimmy G and effectively kicked him out from Bay Area. I still am a big fan of Trey Lance's potential and will live in a fantasy where Purdy and Lance play as one-two punches which Bill Walsh envisioned with Montana and Young, well, until next training camp... Thanks again for magic run Purdy! Really hope your best days are ahead.
Personally this is a bad take. How are his few mistakes “seriously concerning” the Seattle game he was playing through a rib injury, and didn’t throw a single pass all week in practice. The Commanders game he came out in the second half and didn’t repeat his few mistakes from the first. Sure he’s a rookie and will learn, but at this point nitpicking the LAST PICK of the draft is a little pointless. I mean doesn’t mahomes have like 11 interceptions? He’s stepped into his role nearly perfectly and is doing a fine job.
Perdy knows the game like a chess master knows chess. The first time I saw him change the play with an audible, when e recognized the rush, I said to my wife this dude knows what he is doing.
I don’t buy the “weak arm” report. He’s already thrown 4 passes over 30+ yards ... 4 more than JG. And those throws were lasers. I *hope* teams keep dating him to throw long.
Jimmy didn’t need that big post throw. Look back at the film. He had Kittle wide open in the middle at the line of gain and all we needed was a first down. Jimmy doesn’t have long downfield accuracy and never will. He was momentarily delusional and thought he was going to out Patrick Mahomes Patrick Mahomes. Jimmy also has a hard time seeing wide open receivers.
49ers reporter David Lombardi after the Commanders game: "Brock Purdy and Dan Marino are the only QB's in NFL history to register a passer rating of over 100 and throw at least 2 TD passes in their first three career starts."
First of all, citing a drop in play the last two games and not mentioning his oblique injury is short-sighted. Secondly he’s exhibited more than adequate arm strength on multiple occasions. Not sure why analysts keep bringing up the arm strength issue. Might be time to hang your hats on something else, if you can.
With Deebo coming back soon, I'd have to say that I believe Purdy could play like Trent Dilfer and we'd still have a solid shot at winning it all. But at this rate, he's on track to score as many TDs as Russell Wilson this season. I'd call that enough to win it all with this defense and this set of running backs (when healthy).
Well, the 49er defense made plays (interceptions, take aways, etc.), including a pick-6. That gave Purdy a short field, often, but not always. But, I do agree with you otherwise.
I don't understand the Purdy doubters. The offense was inconsistent and STALE most of the season with Jimmy under center. Brock has helped elevate offensive play, slinging throws sidearm around defenders, all while avoiding sacks and getting the ball into the playmakers hands. Don't forget that deep post he hit last week and made look easy. Jimmy might but pretty, but he isn't PURDY! GO NINERS!
Not sure how you make this video without even acknowledging his oblique and rib injuries that were so bad that he could barely throw the ball at warmups vs Seattle. The Niners were legitimately preparing to play with Josh Johnson and did not expect Purdy to complete the game.
With the resources at Purdy's disposal it's possible for them to win it all so as long as he doesn't turnover the ball and remain consistent, the 49ers should be fine.
Good analysis. The Brock Purdy story is amazing and I'm hoping he succeeds. Shanahan's system is QB friendly, so he's in best possible position to bring the Niners the Lombardi. One thing about the footwork not being the best in his last 2 games, do you think the injury he had could have been a factor?
Honestly although he has an amazing supporting cast, imo he has been doing a good job of steering the ship per se. I don't think he's being carried at all, actually I think he does a good job at using his legs to make plays. Our offense has been a bit smoother since purdy took over and Jimmy wasn't playing bad at all before he got injured
For this year, Niners should be able to win with Brock Purdy. The defense should prevent being put in a hole to need to come from behind. The focused running game should be able to control the clock. And if opposing defenses sell out to stop the run, Brock seems to be skilled enough to make them pay for it. A lot of folks give thoughtful criticism for Brock in a general sense, which is fair since most evaluations are in the context of going to any team. However, in the narrow context of Brock can win on this team in this system in this year, anything less would be a disappointment.
Garoppolo and Purdy have very similar skill sets, except Purdy is more mobile, more poised, more accurate, more confident, more cerebral, more comfortable turning his back to the defense, more willing to throw downfield and more mature.
Ignore any viewer who questions your expertise. You're analysis is so very helpful, and if you are wrong, or a player improves, you'll say so. (See, e.g. Justin Herbert 2020 initial & follow up videos-- he really has fixed flaws...)
Great analysis, Alex. I think it's extreme to call any small hitches on limited examples a "regression", but I understand how the concepts highlighted are important to correct.
Hold up, didn't he have an injury? If he was playing in pain out discomfort, wouldn't that affect his footwork, especially since he's a 7th round rookie? I'll admit I'm not a scout out anything, but when evaluating someone so young and unknown, wouldn't it be more fair to judge him by the healthy plays? Just my two cents
Give me a break. This guy (narrator) is a typical arm chair quarterback... picking out nuances in someone else for something he has no ability to perform himself. Brock Purdy played amazing against another top 5 defense in Washington and the more he plays, the more comfortable he'll get and the better he'll get. He has true potential to do some great things with the 49ers in the coming years.
Purdy also does this thing where he points his foot to the sideline on throws and as he throws he twists and locks it causing him to lose a lot of arm strength, he could have a much better arm if he pointed his foot towards his target and let his whole body throw the ball

It's a fun time to be a Niner fan! Playoffs can't get here soon enough.

Last game Purdy threw a touchdown from the 49ers 40. He threw it to the front of the end zone. Someone else in the comments had the distance more correctly but he did it, and he did it still injured
Facts. Not sure how this arm strength argument continues to survive
1000% accurate. Although, I think he can still go to the SB, I agree with your initial analysis
That's why we need to see the team lose a game and see. Also, I'd like to see if he can come from behind.
What about the post/seam Purdy hit to kittle against Washington? It seemed like the safety was daring him to throw it and it resulted in a touchdown.
Yeah I don't know how he missed that
Someone get this video to Brock Purdy for motivation! This is that guy you never wanna tell he can’t do something :)
lol. purdy does not need to watch any video
It's nothing new to him.
@@squidusn71 very true. The more he’s doubted the more fuel is added to his fire. If there is a Brady comparison it’s that aspect of it.
Fact is, Brock is the best rookie QB right now and it's not even close.
Yup, it seems like Brock has been told all his life that he can't do it because of his size and strength. Being a good QB is 75% mental - Joe Montana.
Tank Sports predicted Brock’s success days before this years draft. He systematically laid out all the qualities Brock possesses and how he would use it given the right conditions. Under the then circumstances, Tank predicted Brock could go to Pittsburgh and work his magic. Niners thought otherwise.
I never thought I’d hear the combination of Purdy & Pablo Sanchez in the same sentence lmao
My multivariate statistical model projects that it's just as likely Brock grows and improves as it is he regresses.
Mac couldn't find the right read quick enough for cover zero vs the Dolphins, when they did it to Brock he recognized quickly anticipated knowing he's either gonna take a hit regardless and deliver the ball
Hold on, didn't Purdy hit that post route TD pass to Rayray McCloud perfectly last game that Kittle stole from him? 🤔
Bro, shout out to that "Pablo Sanchez" reference!!! 😂 Real one's know!
I’d say the Seahawks play was more so his bruised ribs and hurt oblique getting in the way, but who knows.
Clear issues ? He was playing with Oblique injury
Yup, that Seahawks game before they injected him with pain meds, he could barely throw past 10 yards. He had oblique and rib injury from the Buccs game just 4 days earlier.
yeah, i was about to say that he partially tore his oblique after the bucs game (where he took a big hit) and he’s only just now recovering from it
Yeah that was a bad take. He was injured but still played very well
Can't take the conclusion of this analysis seriously when you ignore the fact that Brock has been playing with a significant oblique and rib injury the past 2 games. I mean, do we see Jalen "he heals faster than you" Hurt out there right now?
I unsub
awesome vid! very fair assessment, hopefully the regression is from his oblique injury which he had recovered from now. teams finally have film on him now, hopefully he can stand up to the test, more 49ers vid please.
Wanted a video of Purdy, you answered! Great content as always Alex
Yeah, I didn't get that particular critique. He has proved he can make that throw if it's there
Awesome vid! You really need to cover Roquan Smith + Patrick Queen next. What they are doing right now in the Ravens D is unfair.
Uh, did you not see the deep post he threw to McCloud that George kittle got in front of for a TD? I thought the Washington game might have been his best. He didnt have much of a run game to lean on
“Pablo Sanchez level athlete” 😂😂😂iykyk
Basically you're saying "he's got some dawg in him" and I totally agree lol.
He hit the deep post to Ray ray, kittle stole it. Purdy IS gonna win the super bowl, mark it down.
Can we rename “mr.irrelevant “ to “The Brock Purdy Award”
Lmao “seriously concerning” last 2 games. He just played really well vs a top 5 Washington defense.
Dope backyard sports reference Pablo the secrete weapon Sandoval
Agreed, Brock knows the intent of the play thus knowing how to move the defense
I believe if he doesnt turn the ball over the niners will win games on the back of their defense and run game including the super bowl
He literally hit "the big post" against the Commanders to Kittle though.
Purdy is displaying exactly the arm weakness & inaccuracy you described in this video while playing in the 49ers New Years Day 2023 in Las Vegas
Even as a Seahawks fan I hope Purdy wins a Super Bowl with the 49ers, would be an incredible story!
Been waiting for this one
Jimmy didn’t need that big post throw. Look back at the film. He had Kittle wide open in the middle at the line of gain and all we needed was a first down. Jimmy doesn’t have long downfield accuracy and never will. He was momentarily delusional and thought he was going to out Patrick Mahomes Patrick Mahomes. Jimmy also has a hard time seeing wide open receivers.
This what the streets been waiting on, knew you had to get some games in before the 🔥 was comin!
49ers reporter David Lombardi after the Commanders game: "Brock Purdy and Dan Marino are the only QB's in NFL history to register a passer rating of over 100 and throw at least 2 TD passes in their first three career starts."
Unreal content. Love me some OG 49ers videos brother. 💯💯💯
Thanks my guy!
His last two games where far more impressive than the first two Alex.
Rollins obviously has other motives than honesty, lol.
Washington is a top 5 defense. Purdy produced 37 points. Without Deebo. With CMC held in check.
Well, the 49er defense made plays (interceptions, take aways, etc.), including a pick-6. That gave Purdy a short field, often, but not always. But, I do agree with you otherwise.
@@1973TJM the pick 6 was ruled down by contact. From the turnovers they only produced 2 FG. They scored 31 more points.
GO NINERS!
Purdy’s a great story and this whole season is just a reminder Shanahan is the league’s best coach.
Not sure how you make this video without even acknowledging his oblique and rib injuries that were so bad that he could barely throw the ball at warmups vs Seattle. The Niners were legitimately preparing to play with Josh Johnson and did not expect Purdy to complete the game.
Easy. He already came to a conclusion about Brock's ability, and removed any evidence in the video that may contradict that conclusion.
Hes a clout chaser without any football knowledge
I’ve been waiting for this one….
PURDY GOOOOOOOD!
Hey Purdy is smooth and confident and mobile and he's an All-Star just watch where he goes Brock Purdy all the way
With the resources at Purdy's disposal it's possible for them to win it all so as long as he doesn't turnover the ball and remain consistent, the 49ers should be fine.
He was playing with a side injury last 2 weeks
He just makes youtube vids for clout

Bro whipped out the Pablo Sanchez Backyard Sports reference. you got my sub bro.
🫡🫡 game recognize game
he is a smaller guy, his pocket footwork is probably a bit shaky because he wants to avoid getting hit
This guy must be a cowboy fan
Garoppolo and Purdy have very similar skill sets, except Purdy is more mobile, more poised, more accurate, more confident, more cerebral, more comfortable turning his back to the defense, more willing to throw downfield and more mature.
Shhhh 🤫don’t tell that to all that Jimmy riders out there. I appreciate JG and all he did but he was also very limited.
More mature? That part shows some bias. Jimmy is a true professional
This ain’t Jimmy. See you in Brock’s hometown of arizona in February

Ignore any viewer who questions your expertise. You're analysis is so very helpful, and if you are wrong, or a player improves, you'll say so. (See, e.g. Justin Herbert 2020 initial & follow up videos-- he really has fixed flaws...)
Thanks Marv!
Bill walsh would've loved his footwork 😍😇🥰
Bill Walsh rolled over in his grave thinking about Purdy's footwork
Great analysis, Alex. I think it's extreme to call any small hitches on limited examples a "regression", but I understand how the concepts highlighted are important to correct.
Thanks Ian! That was just one of many examples, it would take a long time to show them all.
@@AlexRollinsNFL that's fair. Probably a mistake on my part to assume that showing two examples means there were only two instances... ;)
6:57 Purdy didn't even need to push that pass and could have held on to it and taken another few secs, the protection was solid!
You gotta do an updated Shanahan 21 offense breakdown‼️
Give me a break. This guy (narrator) is a typical arm chair quarterback... picking out nuances in someone else for something he has no ability to perform himself. Brock Purdy played amazing against another top 5 defense in Washington and the more he plays, the more comfortable he'll get and the better he'll get. He has true potential to do some great things with the 49ers in the coming years.
Big Ben was the closest a rookie as been to making it to the sb. Purdy has the chance to be the first to ever make it as a rookie
Purdy also does this thing where he points his foot to the sideline on throws and as he throws he twists and locks it causing him to lose a lot of arm strength, he could have a much better arm if he pointed his foot towards his target and let his whole body throw the ball
