The o-line has continued to decline over the years, and the Cowboys have seemed to favor outside zone more (which decimates Zeke's upfield vision). This is a really interesting breakdown, and it left me with a bit more appreciation for Zeke. On the one hand, it is a good example of why big investments of draft capital and second contracts for RBs tends to be so risky, but on the other hand, it's also an example of how unfair it is to simply judge a player by just looking at box score numbers, and disregarding the effect that a guy like Zeke "carrying the load" has on other players, including his fellow RBs, and the QB he pass blocks for.. It brings up a lot of questions in terms of value and team-building.

      @@howdareyouexist idk I think it’s probably the rest of the league is overpayed tbh. Backs like Henry and Najee Harris compared to more complimentary players like Pollard definitely exist and deserve better pay. Not all players are of the same skill level and treating every player as RBBC only favors certain player archetypes. When the league becomes one dimensional someone innovates. So take the Steelers right. They drafted Ryan Shazier because Kevin Colbert saw the direction the league was going and that the old bigger linebackers of the past wouldn’t be able to last. Smaller undersized middle Linebackers were the future ones that could move sideline to sideline. Well once other teams followed suit and the majority became undersized Derrick Henry took over the league by storm which is also the reason Steelers drafted Najee. It’s a fluid thing that constantly shifting…it’s one of the reasons the NFL is such an amazing league and sport.

  • @rods814
    @rods814 2 года назад +31

    People talk about Zeek’s decline but each year there were factors that lead to his decline in production not a decline in his ability please recognize there is a difference. Our O-line took significant hits. The first hit is loosing the best center in football, then loose our starting left guard to Denver. We are still trying to find answers to loosing Ron Leary and Travis Frederick. Add in the fact that Zeke was running in a bad PCL in his knee. This took away his burst, long speed, and power. What’s funny is the question of “could a bad PCL cause a decline)…hell yes. Strain your PCL then get on an NFL field and see what you can do. Then finally add the Pollard factor that’s taking away a third of Zeek’s normal touches. Pollard has never been an every down back. Even in his college days he split time with Darrell Henderson who was the Zeke in that offense.

    Zeke is as a complete back as there is in the NFL even though he has fallen off a bit on speed. His pass blocking is fantastic and he can get the dirty yards where fullbacks used to get them. Pollard is super quick and a speedster that can break it and take it to the house on any play but lacks the pass protecting ability of a bigger back. They complement one another perfectly. How they are utilized though is on Kellen Moore and Mike McCarthy. They can surely do a better job of that as long as Jerry moves out of the way.

    They don't have a dilemma. They have a 1-2 PUNCH! If anybody reading this saw the ligament stretch Zeke had now 3 games ago, and still scored 2 TD after that in that game. I believe that he has in form. The MN win showcased the entire team in a MUST have game. Allowing Zeke to get 3 goal line runs, while Tony was awesome showed that the coaches are really willing to depend on the healthiest players, and bring those who aren't gradually along. I loved that breakdown of film work!

    Great analysis!!!! (Of course because I agree with mostly all of what you said here) These type of problems are GOOD problems to solve. Give me the headache of having a deep running back position every year. Tony is the lightning to Zeke's thunder. You want both. PLAY THEM BOTH Problem solved. (The old days of a bellcow back like Emmitt, Walter P., Barry S., Tony D. taking ,; those days are gone or changing a lot.) It's bad news to have a deep drop at that position if Zeke gets hurt or misses games. Tony is a more of a gadget guy (see his college reel) and breakaway promise. Put it this way; Cowboys fans will be very sad if/when either one of them gets hurt or misses games.

  • @worldwidechuck
    @worldwidechuck 2 года назад

    A) I think it’s important to note that Zeke’s offensive line has deteriorated each year since he signed that contract.
    B) You didn’t go into pass blocking as much as you could have, which Zeke is a beast at.
    C) That 20 extra pounds doesn’t even begin to explain it: Zeke is THICK. He can take a pounding.
    D) There’s a reason Tony Pollard isn’t a starter in the NFL. As a RB, I'm not convinced he's built to handle 200 carries a season. In fact, even in college he was a WR (who saw considerable time as a ball carrier) but never carried more than 78 times in a season. In the NFL, last season was his best at 130 carries and he got dinged up twice, missing two games. He’s a great talent - just not THE starter. Using him as we do, we get a tremendous benefit from his talent. It''s good thing to have two great backs.
    E) Before Zeke got injured last year, we were 6-1 and riding high. We went 6-4 the rest of the season. Even injured for half the year, he finished 7th in the NFL in rushing (he only carried the ball 20 times in a game twice and had 12 or less carries in a game SEVEN times.)

    Pollard is a great back catching passes out of the backfield and is good finding those holes. Zeke has lost a step, but is still good at catching passes out of the backfield. The real missing element is a back that can push the pile, drag defenders, stiff arm opponents and run over DB’s. We need that back that can get those short yardage first downs and touchdowns.

    Zeke is good and probably still has some left in the tank. It's time to get him out while he is still hot for a pick. (Maybe a new QB) Tony Pollard hasn't been in the league as long as zeke and will most likely end up doing better moving forward. Reading the tackles and secondary will come with experience.

    Zeke is a nice running back. The problem is that no running back is worth a large financial investment. He has very little burst, and that’s a big problem. It seems like he hardly breaks any tackles, and that’s more on the RB than the o-line. Right now, Pollard is a better RB, and so far, without looking at the advanced stats, this season as well.

    Another great break down, Sir Alex! I know that Zeke is better at staying tight to his blockers to set up defenders, but I think that can be taught to some degree, and Pollard's athleticism allows him to not have to do it as well as Zeke to be just as or more effective. I'm interested to see if a healthy Zeke looks more like the rookie who dominated the league or more like the "aging" Zeke that has been seemingly in decline the last few seasons. If his contract allowed for it, would Jerry consider trading him if his numbers stay down through the first 6 games or so?

    This is one of those things only true nfl fans and former football players of most levels understand. Some players are better than they end up being some years. Due to injury or team composition etc. Zeke is just not living up to his talent potential. So it disappoints us. But he's still a very good RB, just hasn't been elite like he used to be. Pollard is just the new hotness and has the insane speed and shift we like in the current day nfl. I think the reason we have this dilemma is the way its been handled. They both are cool with it and the team is starting to use them both of their strengths.

    2. Zeke is hands down the best blocking back in the league, which is extremely important in the NFL today with playbooks becoming more pass happy.
    3. Size wise zeke checks all the boxes.
