    The 2021 receiving corps was mostly new players and judging a rookie on his ability against man coverage is kind of a gimme. I think Mac proved he's a worthy starter. I feel like once he has a healthy, consistent RB it'll improve the offense as a whole. Brady wasn't an elite passer til 2004-2005

    • @mikewilliams3310
      @mikewilliams3310 2 года назад +18

      In the 2002 season Brady was 6th in p yards and 1st in p tds and 8th in comp%. In the 2003 season Brady was 6th in p yards and 10th in p tds. In the 2004 season Brady was 10th in p yards and 6th in p tds. He was also in the top 10 in passer rating all 3 years. I think people are either to young to have watched or don’t remember since it was so long ago and this false narrative has been made that Brady was a mid tier game manager during the first 3 sb. In the first sb season absolutely he was those things but by the 2nd & 3rd he was clearly a top 10 qb and probably top 6 or 7 qb.

    • @jrad410
      @jrad410 2 года назад +12

      @@mikewilliams3310 I think part of that was a narrative. Brady always could sling it better than ppl realized. He just didn’t have great weapons until 07

    • @mikehatten5738
      @mikehatten5738 2 года назад +17

      @@mikewilliams3310 Brady could always sling it and had a strong accurate high velocity arm. The narrative about him having a “noodle arm” was the system he played in favored short passing and check downs west coast style system. So he made a lot of “looks easy” short passes this has people think Mac can do the same. But people forget Brady had an arm even at 43 and 44 years old he led the league in deep passes over 20 yards. He never had a weak arm

    • @Bu11yMagu1re
      @Bu11yMagu1re 2 года назад +5

      Brady was in fact elite from 2001-2006. The game was so much different then. Not as pass heavy as it is now.
      So its dumb to compare passing totals then vs now.

    • @mikehatten5738
      @mikehatten5738 2 года назад +3

      @@Bu11yMagu1re Brady was always elite tbh his arm talent just wasn’t the focal point in the offensive style they ran. He had excellent mental abilities, pocket presence, arm strength, velocity, accuracy and touch. Nothing has changed he was rated the best deep ball qb last year better than Rodgers or mahomes. So the narrative Brady isn’t a “gREat ThrowEr oF tEh FoOTBallZ” is ignorant. He’s literally lead the league in advanced throwing metrics many times in his career.

    Of course mac struggled against man coverage, he had a pretty mediocre recieving core that was getting locked up, idk how this means mac is bad

    • @Kune35
      @Kune35 2 года назад +13

      The problem is he doesn't have the arm strength to get the ball through tighter windows. Unlike Allen or Mahomes, he NEEDS his receivers to be fully open. He also has to put more air under his deep throws (and thus more hangtime), which gives the deep safety more time to get there as Hyde showed against him in the playoffs on that highlight reel INT. In the same game, Allen executed basically the same play for a TD, but threw the ball 10 yards further with the ball getting there 0.2 seconds faster. The only people who downplay the importance of arm strength are fans of teams with weak armed QBs like Jones.

    • @JohnDoe-rr1fz
      @JohnDoe-rr1fz 2 года назад +5

      @@Kune35 of course a weaker arm is a negative, but its not the deal breaker people make it out to be. The hyde interception you used as an example is poor, that pass would’ve been a TD and the throw was perfectly fine, the problem was mac stared down his Agholor, allowing hyde to read his eyes and get over to make a play. With time mac will gain experience and plays like that will be TDs, whether or not his arm strength improves, which it most likely will as mac has looked great in practice, slimmed down, pit on muscle, and met with QB coach Tom House

    • @Tom-vt1eu
      @Tom-vt1eu 2 года назад +2

      @@JohnDoe-rr1fz Yeah, Mac does not have very good/elite arm strength but it’s still adequate at the NFL level. Some solutions to improve against man coverage would be for Mac to work with a throwing coach to marginally improve his arm strength. I believe Burrow and Matt Ryan were able to do the same with their arm.
      Another solution would be for the Pats to get one or two elite pass-catcher that would cause mismatch problems for defenses. Gronk is a good example of that when he was with the Pats.

      Except the teambuilding is on a fast track to great success. BB was Exec of the Year last year and should have been numerous other teams during the 2nd Dynasty. NE probably has the best group of WRs 1-4 or 1-5 in the conference and they have the best TE duo, at least on paper. Best RBs. Very good OL. Probably a top 5 OL. NO one has any idea where the ball is going and that's whole the point of the Pats offense. Brady LOST 2 SBs where EVERYONE KNEW where the ball was going. Get it? Then when BB fixed Brady by drafting JimmyG and scaring him for his job, Brady went back to spreading the ball around and not using as much shotgun. Each WR has a totally different skill set than the other. BB is so far ahead of you people, you mock it, because you don't get it. Only in 2022 do teenagers and 20/30 somethings know more than the guy who built 2 dynasties and built Tom Brady, amongst numerous other HOF players or GREAT players that no one wanted.

As to the man coverage, I'm going to be real here. I see it more as an issue with his receivers being able to separate and make plays on the ball than his ability to read it. You need confidence to throw against man coverage, and as much as I love the Pats receivers like Meyers and Bourne, they didn't have a guy last year that could really win those tight man coverage openings.
    I find your use of the playoff interception incredibly misleading when you said "things he struggles with". That ball was perfect. 99 times out of 100 thats a touchdown. It was an amazing play by the defender to intercept it. If anything its a Mac Jones highlight.

    So I decided to rewatch this and give it another chance, and it's so glaring that on almost every completion a defender is draped on Mac's receiver, and yet these are completions. That speaks to two things: one, Mac's ball placement in tight coverage, and two, the lack of quality receivers. I am more convinced on second watch that the issue that you think Mac has will be alleviated the better his targets are, and would be an "issue" for any QB throwing at this group of receivers.

Additionally, Davante Parker should help out a little with the man coverage issues because he can consistently deliver on those contested grabs when he’s healthy. I agree and whoever does not step up this year will get cut, we need receivers that can reasonably seperate in man and run tight accurate routes so they are where the ball is going because its already in the air, Mac doesn't have a remote control when a receiver runs a lazy route or completely the wrong route, let alone when they get it right in their hands and drop it anyways. It looks like all of our competitors have a guy or multiple guys and Patriots are screwing around to get a bargain receiver. If they don't get the team right, I would expect Mac to want to be traded when his contract is up. It's really not fair to give him a shitty team and expect him to make miracles. If he had the Dolphins roster he would be balling. Teams mostly play man in red zone situations where the windows are super tight. Yes Mac has an average arm but it can improve. He lags his right leg when he throws instead to turning his hips into his throwing motion. With another year in this system, he can improve his ball placement and really throw receivers open.

    His receivers can't get open vs man, nothing McCorkle can do, they're not tight window throws, there was no window. Everybody outside of agholor last year runs 4.6+, you can separate on short routes because Bourne has very good short area quickness, but you can separate deep since nobody else has another great, which means on third and long you're fucked.
    Having Parker on the outside who can win 50-50 balls will let McCorkle challenge deep, lets agholor run free and take the deeper routes on the right side, because he's not a physical, aggressive receiver who can play the against a cb1, this opens up the short and intermediate throws to everybody from Bourne to Henry to Meyers and even jonnu who can win against linebackers, the key is Parker staying healthy.
    That pick McCorkle threw would have been a td if Parker was the target because 1) Parker would've gotten up and caught it and 2) the safety would need to respect agholor's speed on the other side, buying McCorkle more room on the throw.
    Not having a wr who can routinely win one on one in man situation is a different thing from McCorkle not having elite arm strength.

      This. I would wager its less about McCorkles' physical limitations than not having big game breaking quality threats for weapons around him. I think this title should be Patriots have a receiver problem. Yes, Mac Jones is average or even below average in terms of arm talent but all of the can easily be offset with good to elite receivers. Jones is probably closer to who Brady was in his first couple seasons rather than later part of his career. Patriots are fully aware of that and this offense is still work in progress.

    Alex! How do you disrespect Devante Parker like that?! LoL
    Great video as always. I find your point about stability of a system to be even more crucial than you suggested. Look at teams like the Dolphins, Jets and Browns. Tua, Wilson and Baker are all top 5 picks that undoubtedly have talent enough to win at a high level. But dysfunction may well ruin their careers.
    In the NFL being so bad against man coverage will make you incredibly limited. For all his faults, Brian Flores running exclusively 0 against Lamar overcame a total nemesis team for Miami. So I’m curious as to your thoughts, I’d you had to choose a situation you preferred in the AFC East, is it Miami, NE or NY? And who’s coaching staff gives you the most faith they can make their young qb worthy of their draft selection?

    • @AlexRollinsNFL
      @AlexRollinsNFL  2 года назад +1

      I love Devante, but he's on the back 9 of his career and I don't see Mac throwing him contested jump balls over and over. Mac throws the fade pretty nicely, but I think he likes seeing that early separation which is not Parker's specialty.
      Great points and great question. I liken NFL organizations to great movies/movie franchises. You can have great actors, but a bad script and director and the movie is shit. In terms of "situation" not sure if you mean surrounding talent, coaching, or both but I guess the guy I'd have the most confidence in is still Mac, but Zach Wilson is the guy who is closer than one might think, and has easily the highest potential. I'm super low on Tua and think the whole Dolphins situation will blow up in their face

    Mac Jones will be better this year due some personal measures he took. Like working with a QB coach in the off season, and geting his diet under control. I expect Mac to be better.
    Now, we both know Beli is a genius but, is he today? Patricia line coach and Judge Mac Jones' what? Who calling plays?
    I heard te Beli did this once before in the 80's and it worked for him and the team was a success, so I am reserving judgement. I about freaked out when I heard his plan, but have since calmed down quite a bit.
    Nobody is expecting the Patriots to be high level competitive in Mac's second year, we'll see how this program works.

      Look I'm worried also, however I believe in Belichick and Patricia and Judge. They are smart men as beliechick has said. We aren't designing and building a bridge. good winning football is all about execution. I'm comfident Judge and Patricia can assure execution is a critical part of training and conditioning. People are talking a lot of smack about the Patriots. there is a old saying in international nuclear neegotiations, "Trust, but verify". We'll see what is happening for we will be able to see if the Pariots are on track. Do you watch Belick's before and after TV show? You will know a lot wathcing that. I'm optimistic for the team. Oh, beckham nedds a job. I thinkif he is healthy he'd be great for the offense and the young WRs we have. But, we'll see. surprised he still doesn't have a job at this point camp starts this week.
