    The Kansas City Chiefs offense and Patrick Mahomes lost (arguably) their best player in Tyreek Hill, yet somehow they actually got better. Hill was and still is one of the best players in the entire NFL, but the Chiefs started to stagnate last year even with him at the peak of his powers. After sending him to Miami, instead of regress even further, Mahomes has turned the offense into one of the most dominant of the last two decades. How did they do this and why are they better without Tyreek Hill? This week’s episode uses the all-22 coaches film to analyze the Kansas City Chiefs offense and Patrick Mahomes improved without Tyreek Hill.

    I’d heard last year that Tyreek had complained about not getting enough touches. I remember thinking about how frustrating it would be, as the quarterback, to constantly have to be thinking about getting one guy the football in order to keep them happy. It doesn’t seem conducive to winning football, regardless of that player’s talent.
    Thanks for illustrating how something like this can be detrimental to a team’s overall performance, despite Tyreek being one of the top players in the game today. It seems a little counterintuitive, until you take all other factors into account.

      Sean Mcvay is going to have to take a page from what Andy Reid has done and the Packers too. The chiefs wr corps is the definition of average but collectively as a group they are dangerous because of mahomes willingness to spread the ball around. Stafford and Rodgers should do what Mahomes did in the offseason and get with all of the receivers before OTA’s even begin. He developed chemistry with them all not to mention playing in every preseason game to get ready for week 1.

    The problem is that Tyreek Hill has an ego. He wants the ball and he's willing to demand it. This is great for the receivers numbers, but it's terrible for the team.

    Great breakdown! I remember before the season started when I wondered if the Chiefs would have an offense similar to the 2010 post-Randy Moss Patriots, or would they struggle on offense, without one player attracting so much for attention. Fortunately, it was the former!
    Something else to make note of: without any stats to back this up, I believe that the emergence of Isaiah Pacheco, and the absolute roll that Jerrick McKinnon has been on lately, has allowed the Chiefs to be much more efficient with their running game. They have a very balanced and diverse offense. Andy Reid deserves a lot of credit, for, throughout his career, consistently getting as much as he can out of the players that he has available. As he always likes to say, he is "putting his players in position" to succeed!

      It’s not that they are actually better without Hill but it seems like Hill isn’t willing to have games with only 3-5 catches sometimes in order for the chiefs to efficiently spread the ball around

Mahomes won't get the ez deep shot looks sot he constant is Kelce winning in the middle now. But the bag he has to work for receivers is deeper so its on his vision and arm to pick right everytime. And the legs to always buy that time needed to still get a pass out. As good as Hill was this season for the Fins, teams found ways to slow that pass attack down and force McDaniel to get the ball out in other ways.

I think the chiefs won their Superbowl against the niners because of that high speed, big play potential of Tyreek. I would argue that they were better equipped to stop the offense in the Superbowl. The Chiefs put up 44 against the Niners this season and made it look easy against a defense that has shut down just about everyone else. While I'm not saying the Chiefs would hang 40 on them again if they were to meet in the Superbowl again this year, the Chiefs offense was the one offense that handed the Niners defense's asses to them.

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W Год назад +1

      Nah. I think the Chiefs have various ways to attack the Niners who have the defense that takes away those deep shots and plays the run and the underneath stuff extremely well. During the Niners/Fins game, Hill got his but whenever Tua wanted to go at the middle of the field with his speedsters he wasn't getting his shots easy there. Gesicki is big but his hands aren't really as secure when he gotta take a hit at the point of the catch. But Kelce's a monster at 6'5" 250 with sure ass hands to haul those down every time. Mahomes has a good receivers of different skillsets to pick on the defense and with his QB skills, its just shootin fish in a barrel.

    • @craigcampbell8560
      @craigcampbell8560 Год назад

      @@t4d0W You summed up the reasons the Chiefs offense is better this year quite well. When it was Hill and Kelce and a bunch of 4th and 5th type receivers, the Chiefs would struggle against defenses who had the personnel on defense to actually do a good job of limiting Kelce AND Hill at the same time, which was no easy feat. This season, they don't quite have the same explosiveness (Hill is in a league of his own in that regard) but their receiver room is WAY deeper. Now, if you take away Kelce, Juju eats you alive. Try to take away MVS and Watson gets you. Toney is a LOT like Hill with only slightly less speed, and Hardman is still blazing fast. I can't wait to see what it looks like to have Toney and Hardman on the field at the same time, especially if MVS is out there too... Absolutely terrifying from a speed aspect. You still Have Noah Gray and the Blake Bell as well as McKinnon and Pacheco. I've never seen an offense that can put so many different personnel groupings out there and be an absolute nightmare to try to defend as what the Chiefs can potentially do now that Hardman is going to be back. How in the hell do you try to defend them when ALL of them can burn you and you have a QB who will throw the ball to ANY of them and God forbid, you manage to cover everybody, can just pick up first downs or score with his legs. If Andy Reid will actually run the ball with purpose and do it frequently enough to keep defenses honest I don't know how you can stop this offense.

    To me this topic is hilarious because of the (many) criticisms of Mahomes, top was that he would hold the ball, invite pressure and try to find Hill deep too often and ignore all the short passes Reid schemed wide open for him. He literally lost the Superbowl doing that, which gave everyone the impression the Bucs pass rush was ferocious. It wasn't in the 1st half, but Mahomes invited all the pressure holding the ball. So to me, their offense getting "better" (more consistent vs. average defenses) is exactly what I expected. Also, Kelce is by far the most important piece on that offense because he's the single most reliable safety valve in the NFL at uncovering over the middle where Mahomes can throw his best pass, a flat baseball pass. Take Kelce off the Chiefs and Mahomes is just a scrambling Jimmy G.
