The Niners have clearly given up on him and that's just huge draft capital wasted. And the team has been one of the top contenders regardless so how well would they have done if they had been able to use those picks on people who actually played. Now maybe Lance goes somewhere else and does well and then he's not really a bust but that just makes it more of a screw up for the Niners because then they had the guy but didn't recognize it and let him go. Now if Lance does suck, then he's a huge bust, in discussion for biggest of all time just because of how much he cost his team. Too early to call someone a "bust". A good comparison would be Steve McNair (also a third overall pick), and it took McNair 4 or 5 seasons to polish his passing skills enough to be a truly effective quarterback. Either way, I hope the Niners figure out their quarterback situation. I'm not a fan of the team, but they have such a great roster of versatile, unselfish team players, it would be a waste if they never won a Super Bowl...

    Just because the trade didn't tear the franchise apart the last two seasons doesn't mean it's not one of the worst trades in NFL history. These are two separate things. Also, we don't know that the trade won't cause more ramifications, especially since their first round pick this year was traded for him. If Purdy or Darnold don't work out this year and we have to move on from players like Kittle, Juice, Aiyuk, Armstead, etc. because of cost and then Trent Williams retires, don't you think that we would've liked those picks?

      I agree with your first sentence. The thing is, we basically traded a 1st and two 2nds. We swapped 12 for 3 the draft year, and our pick from this draft that MIA used was at 29. Probably around the same place or hopefully later in the next draft for the final pick. Still a lot for sure, but those aren’t blue chip picks exactly. We missed at 14 one year with Kinlaw, or the year we drafted Thomas at 3, it happens. Given how extremely good they are at drafting later rounds, I don’t really believe that this trade cripples them at all in the future. Losing everyone like you suggested would be catastrophic of course, but I don’t see that happening at all. Aiyuk leaving and or Williams retiring seem like the only real possibilities though. Williams would be much more difficult to replace obviously

    • @theJHeykid
      @theJHeykid 9 месяцев назад

      @@Fernando_616 I'm not so sure. We have many high paid players, plus will have to pay Aiyuk, Bosa, potentially Hufanga and have high paid players in Williams, Kittle, Warner, Juice, Deebo, CMC, Ward, Greenlaw, and Armstead. Then if one of these QBs work out you have to pay them and that takes a decent chunk. We'll see what happens there. As for the draft, I'd rather have a decent RT, better depth at DT, and a better backup TE, all things that could be reasonably drafted in that late first round area. You don't just throw away draft picks no matter where they are. There's a reason they're so valuable

      Lance chose to enter the NFL with as few college games under his belt. San Francisco chose him despite all the history that says QBs with little game experience don't work. The pick didn't work out. When a first round pick does not work out, they are labelled busts. The fact that the 49ers recovered from it last year with Brock Purdy doesn't change that. Heck, the Pistons won an NBA title after taking Darko over Melo and Wade. Darko is still a bust. The Warriors drafted James Wiseman over LaMelo and Haliburton. They won the title. The shipped Wiseman off to Detroit for an injured Gary Payton II. He didn't work out. He was a bust. That is how the label works.
