At the end of the day, Trey didn't really get a lot of chances, but he also didn't really seize the ones he did get. Brock, on the other hand, took his shot and just kept winning game, after game, after game. You can say his arm strength isn't as good, his ceiling is lower, etc, but at the end of the day winning is better than losing, and Brock just keeps on winning.

Going to the NFL was a money grab. His options: 1) Go to the NFL now, get drafted in the first round (where he was projected) and hope that you get developed or 2) stay in school, gain experience , improve your chances of sticking in the NFL and hope that you don't get injured or hurt your draft stock. Lance chose door #1, has gotten paid $25 million and still has his health. Can't really fault his decision making.

So at 9:20 why did they draft a qb:
Context - Garoppolo was injured a lot and they were limited in what they could do offensively. Jimmy has a quick release but mobility, deep ball outside the numbers, scrambling, and health were all concerns.
Also they were paying Jimmy about 30M a year and they could get a franchise qb on a rookie contract that would help get players around him.
Hindsight is 20/20: The 2021 class was loaded with qbs and now we are finding out it may have been the weakest in the last 10-15 yrs
Trevor had a solid year last year but thru a few games this year doesnt look as transcendent as he was slated as.
Mac Jones made the probowl as an alternate but was benched for a guy that the pats cut
Fields is awful cant read defenses and Chicago is about to hit the reset button on him.
Trey Lance was billed to have a strong arm and be mobile but really never really saw the arm and the mobility thing was weird because he wasnt quick and he couldnt run over people like Cam or Allen so he was just average. He's a good guy but indecisive and inaccurate.

Great analysis! As a Niners fan who wanted to see Trey succeed (and has watched the Trey haters and Trey Stans tear down the fandom) I think you are spot dead on…up until the Shanahan being better at developing QBs than McCarthy. Shanahan is a better offensive coach than McCarthy, but Shanahan has no track record of successfully grooming a young QB. He didn’t groom Brock, Brock landed NFL ready. He didnt successfully groom Lance, Allen looks pretty bad, Mullens and Bethard weren’t successful, and he exposed RG3 to crazy injuries. To be effective Shanahan’s offensive scheme seems to just need a QB to get the ball out with quick and accurate short throws, and if the QB can’t do that he’s generally done with them.

    • @PureMagma
      @PureMagma 8 месяцев назад +9

I agree. Based on results, Shanahan actually *injures QB's* with his play-calling lineups. I heard that the reason Jimmy Garoppolo was sent to a second (out-of-the-way) area to practice during 2022 summer training camp wasn't because he was "rehabilitating his shoulder" so much as they separated him from Trey Lance because he was trying to help Trey improve... and Jimmy was told "How can he be QB1 if he's looking up to you?" and then they moved Garoppolo to a different location where he couldn't influence Trey and the team wasn't pining away for their preferred QB1. The interview Jimmy Garoppolo recently gave to a reporter he carefully implied that the 9ers needed to do more to support the development of their QB's.

Trey Lance might make a good field-goal and extra point holder. Maybe? Look, it's really hard to be an NFL QB. There is NO shame in not being able to do so. The blame is on the 49ers management, and coach Shanahan, for trading so many #1 picks in a bumper crop year, and now they are scapegoating Trey for their poor decision. They lucked out on Purdy Boy or else, Shanahan would be in serious trouble.

I've been a niner fan for 30 years and I remember Mooch saying Giovanni Carmazzi just couldn't handle the NFL stage, and it was just too big for him. That is the same sense I get watching Trey play. He is total deer in headlights and panics the moment he steps back to pass. Brock is so confident out there and smooth in everything he does. It is night and day. Some guys can handle the big stage and others just cannot, and this is so difficult to predict when scouting college QBs. Parcells always said he would only take QBs that played at major schools and had at least 2 years of starting experience, otherwise he wouldn't take them. Trey might end up being as big of a bust as Ryan Leaf and Jamarcus Russell.

Trey lance is not a pure passer without a quick release and great accuracy. Usually thats the only kind of QB that can make it from a D2 division. North Dakota state is the Alabam of the D2 division. They are always at or near the top. That being said the physicality of this minor leaugue is not the same as the SEC. Trey lance could not run a simple sneak play without being broken. He had zero skillsets for passing with any kind of accuarcy and this pick was a huge mistake by the 49ers.

It's irritating watching people twist themselves in knots trying to pretend these running backs that can pass occasionally or "dual threat" (not really) are something great.
Passing SKILL should be a thing. Once the legs go out on these running backs, they have nothing to fall back on. Trey Lance was the 'virtue signal' pick. It didn't make sense for the same reason virtue signaling doesn't make sense, it's STUPID and it costs a lot. Calling that QB class "loaded" was correct, loaded with crap. None of these clowns can play QB, Justin Fields is a joke, his mental capacity to play position simply doesn't exist yet he keeps getting chances. I guess the Bears don't want people calling them "raysis". It's all so pathetic, the MERIT that used to govern positions based on ACTUAL ability has been replaced by diversity highers.

What no one is talking about is, in 2022, the players on the 49ers did not vote for him as a team captain. The question is why? What did they see or better yet not see in him? A captain is supposed to be a team leader and the players did not see him as such. Now let that sink in, the players did not believe a quarterback that by nature is supposed to lead a team, was not a leader. Now look at Purdy, the players love that guy, they have his back, and he was voted one of the team captains. I hope Lance finds success and does well in the league but every year, the draft is a crap shoot and they're more misses then hits.

Gotta feel bad for Trey Lance. Shoved into a top team looking for a pro while he's still trying to learn and gain experience. He's a good kid but just didn't get lucky. He also didn't do well in the few chances he got due to all the stress and pressures. Purdy is way too superior and it killed lance. Had he been in a mid team he'd have been a Jordan Love types.

Great analysis, I had completely forgotten about his bad preseason game against the Raiders. It's shocking that the 49ers moved on so quickly after spending so much draft capital to get Trey. I feel like we still can't be sure what he is or will be as a pro QB.

I disagree. It was a good idea to move up in the draft to get "the Guy". Those 1st round picks were going to be very late in the round. Yes, Lance development was hampered due to injuries but this to speaks to the risk side of the trade as well. Some young players seem to be bitten by those injuries and its not an exact science on who those will be.

This is on Kyle Shanahan. He sucks at evaluating and drafting Rounds 1-3. The Niner hit mid and late rounds because the scout teams are in their bag. It wasn’t Trey’s fault for getting drafted to a team that didn’t have reps for him to learn on the job, or have an offense that suited his downfield talent.
Kyle doesn’t develop QBs. He needs ready made guys that he can plug in and follow orders. Purdy is an outlier they got lucky on (I believe it was Greise and scout team that pushed to pick him last instead of taking a chance of picking him up drafted. Kyle has a bad history with the QB position. He broke RG III, dropped Kaep for Brian Hoyer when he got to the Niners, he tried to pump up the fanbase with Nick Mullins, and CJ Beathard, he avoided drafting Mahomes and Deshaun Watson, avoided Tom Brady (twice?) and Aaron Rodgers. The guy has helped get the Niners competitive again, but the choke jobs in the Super Bowls, and fumbling the early rounds make you wonder if he’s just a good play designer. Unless he’s completely different behind closed doors, I’m not sure he’s the guy to lead this team to a 6th the Super Bowl.
And I say all this as a lifetime Niner fan.

You're the 1st person on RUclips to get it right. Lance was my guy in that draft, but I failed to understand just how much experience Lance needed before he'd be a functional NFL starter. Imo he'll fail to show antything in Dallas as well simply for the same reason he failed in SF. He needs reps and he's unlikely to get them in Dallas due to Dak and Cooper being sooo established in that offense. I don't think trey is likely to have any amount of success in the NFL the longer he stays on successful teams, if that makes sense. He needs to go to a team that can be patient with his growth and no team in contention is going to afford him that opportunity because all those teams have established starters.

If the kid is anything less than great, ie average or sucks, then you hurt your team badly. That's three first rounders that could be on your o-line, or on your defence. It seems obvious to me that Lance does not have a good throwing motion, a lot of wasted movement that costs time and velocity. Purdy doesn't have the greatest arm either, but at least he starts with a good base and puts his whole body into his throws, whereas Lance looks like a shot-putter with a statuesque follow-through. All of this would be very easy to quantify by testing specific situations for time to release, distance, speed and accuracy. If Lynch and Shanahan didn't do that, shame on them, a VERY costly mistake.
Lance seems to be a quality, intelligent individual. In his limited playing time he looked very uncomfortable, and it's a valid question to ask if all of the time spent languishing during the recovery might have screwed up his mental state. I'm sure the Cowboys will try to answer those questions, and my suspicion is that Lance will be demoted and cut at some point during the 2024 pre-season if not sooner. I hope I'm wrong, but if no one has worked on his throwing deficiencies to this point I think he's toast. I don't particularly care for PJ FLeck, but he was right: Trey Lance would have been a decent safety.

    • @fate8718
      @fate8718 8 месяцев назад +5

      Its debatable
Lets put this in perspective: To qualify as a bust you quite literally just have to not be worth the selection
      He was 3rd overall
      he cost 3 firsts
      coolio
He is 1-2 in careers starts that he finished
      with a 2-3 td-int ratio
      and only around 600 yards
This is beyond bad with the weapons he has
Compare this to Brock, who Trey fans thought wasnt on Trey's level or some shit,
who went 5-0 in career starts(not including playoffs(2-1(Suck it Dak)))
      had a 11-2 td-int ratio
      and went for 1300 yards
Keep in mind Brock played tougher ops the whole way through
So now that wes established that Trey was worse than the last overall pick(sure its the best Mr. Irellivant of all time but like calm it a lil)
We can safley say: Trey is a bust until further notice
He has time to turn this the fuck around but will he is the question(probs not in fucking Dallas but hey move to Atlanta or New England and he has a shot)

    • @cdsersd2d
