Trey Lance & Akili Smith Are IDENTICAL

- The San Francisco 49ers traded away quarterback Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys, meaning that the #3 overall pick from the 2021 NFL Draft is no longer a member of the team after just two seasons. And while Lance might be one of the biggest busts in quite some time, as it turns out, just about everything in his career is identical to that of another former #3 overall pick... Cincinnati Bengals QB Akili Smith

Lance had very few starts in college. It’s crazy that he was a top 5 pick
I can see why he went round 1. He had 42 total touchdowns and 0 picks in his only season as a starter but I was always confused why he and Zach Wilson (Mahomeslike upside?) went above Fields in the draft.
Because he played for Ohio state, will be the narrative. But the only OSU qb that was taken in the first round was Haskins, who was taken by the Commanders. Fields was put on a team that was losing a coach and GM and was in salary cap hell. But once fans and media already make up their decision on a player, they'll think it's an excuse when we say "trash o line and no weapons." Put Fields on the 49ers and Purdy would still be unknown.
Fields has epilepsy that’s the only reason his stock dropped.
@@timn8285 No drafted Ohio St. QB has amounted to anything in the NFL. In 80 years. The best one was Mike Tomczak who was undrafted, and nobody thinks he was anything more than average at best. The Buckeye QB Curse is real. Joe Burrow realized this at some point which is why he left and look at him now.
It’s crazy how sports announcers can influence draft picks isn’t it? Talking up players and creating FOMO
Akili did throw the first TD in Paycor stadium history though. I was at that game. He was 15-43 for 250 yds for a QBR of 43.7 which is only slightly better than if he spiked the ball into the ground every play
sounds like a Zach Wilson stat line
Just come out & say it: While traveling with the Bengals Akili Smith had a one night stand & never heard back from the woman. She named the baby Trey. Akili finally met Trey on draft night & has mentored his long lost son to be just like his father.
Imagine losing your job to Mr. Irrelevant and Sam Darnold.
That's about as low as it can go.
Going from 3rd overall to worth only a 4th rounder too
Brock Purdy was better than most people projected. I was surprised that he lasted as long as he lasted in the draft. Also, Sam Darnold was a No. 3 overall pick himself. Purdy's emergence threw everything into flux.
@@marcus813 I will never forgive Chris Grier for looking at tape of Skylar Thompson and Brock Purdy and deciding Thompson was better. Never ever ever. 🤬🤬🤬
Darnold isn't even 25 yet!!!! The guy was a top 3 pick and the lights might start to come on making him a franchise guy
@@marcus813 exactly, darnold is very very young and learning
It feels like there have been so many flops trying to hire
“The next Sean McVay” (Kliff Kingsbury)
“The next Bill Belichick” (Matt Patricia)
“The next Josh Allen” (Trey Lance)
that if I were a GM I’d take whoever is the latest obsession and hire the exact opposite
Akili had more starts in college than Trey though🤣
This is insane how close the numbers are between the two
If the numbers are basically identical between quarterbacks of different generations, then the recent one arguably passed slightly worse because standards for passing stats have increased over time.
Insane also how akili had a terrible oline lol
Fun fact about Akili Smith: His son committed to Oregon.
His son is a big kid 6’6
Will Trey Lance have a kid and do the same? haha
@@samuelmartinez6344 Trey Lance Jr will become the next Mahomes.
Jackson Mahomes, that is.
@@yebobbummann1622I literally thought you were related to Lance or batsh*t insane. Then I saw "Jackson" and thought you're kind of mean. Lol
Can't wait to see his kid play for the Bengals
Plot twist: Cooper Rush beats Lance out for QB2 with the Cowboys and Lance gets cut again
That's what I don't get about the trade, Rush is a perfect back up. Not good enough to cause a QB controversy but good enough to not make mistakes and keep the team afloat and win games.
@@HookedonChronics Nah, they are trying to apply pressure to Dak while also planning beyond him. If he doesn't get it done by the time that guaranteed money runs out, they will look to Lance; the contracts line up for a move like that.
If Lance progresses, they can also leverage him with his deal and get him signed long term well below market value for a starter.
Everybody will shit on this opinion until they realize the Niners brought in a 'bust' QB in Steve Young (Heisman Trophy winner and #1 overall pick in supplemental draft) sitting behind Montana...until the organization was ready to move on from Montana. Results: 1 Lombardi, 2 MVPs and a HoFer.
It is uncanny how similar they were after watching this video. I am still scratching my head how this happened.
Incredible similarities, great video..
Not a great video he purposely lied by omission cuz Trey Lance only started 4 games cuz of injury and threw 5 touchdowns while Akili Smith played 14 games and threw only 5 touchdowns while being healthy,Meaning the comparison is terrible cuz we haven't seen enough of Trey Lance to call him a bust unlike Akili Smith
It's a little harsh to say Lance is the same as Smith given that Lance broke his leg, and that may have impacted Lance's development. The 49ers timetable doesn't justify him being there while the Bengals were so bad that giving up on Smith was an actual indictment against his ability
Akili Smith threw 5 career TDs in 17 starts
Trey Lance has so far thrown 5 career TDs in 4 starts
HUGE difference. You shouldn't cherry pick stats just to fit your narrative.
When the Niners drafted Lance I was in shock. Didn’t love the pick but I was willing to support and cheer on Lance. I wanted Fields but it never felt like he was on their radar. I wish we could know what happened those 48 hrs before the draft.
I hate it when the computer just recycles players and changes their name instead of actually generating new players.
Yeah, I was thinking of Akili Smith in comparison as well. Good call.
I think unless things continue to go worse for him, there’s still a chance he can turn it around. By that, he won’t be an elite quarterback or even a great quarterback. But, if he turns it around, he might have a solid career. You think of Jim Plunkett. The guy was a bust for Boston and San Francisco. Goes to the Raiders and win two Super Bowls. He wound up turning his career around to where he wasn’t elite, but he was no longer a bust. Still, it’s surprising by how this developed and it does make me worried a bit for the Texans with CJ Stroud.
Stroud will undoubtedly bust. When’s the last time you ever heard of an Ohio state quarterback playing well in the NFL? They’re good everywhere EXCEPT quarterback
@@marcusmcgraw3519 His lack of experience plus the qb curse will doom him. In my mind the biggest issue is I am almost the same size as stroud and I would be killed on a football field.
@@marcusmcgraw3519Aged terribly
Akili Smith was the first of a bunch of Oregon QB's that became busts in the NFL.
Which included Joey Harrington.
Oregon QBs are only good when they are drafted by the Chargers
Mariota
You could argue that Bill Musgrave was first. But he was never a hyped prospect.
Until Herbert
And being compared to akili Smith is not a compliment
Akili Smith played on absolutely bad Bengals teams. Trey Lance was the weak link on potential Super Bowl rosters in San Francisco.
Daryl Lamonica. Still one of the best nicknames ever. Mad bomber forever!! Lmao
They also had ken the snake stabler
Smith didn't have an o line to block for him though
Did Paxton Lynch ever start a game for the Denver Broncos? I remember him being a hyped 1st round pick.
He started 2 games each in 2016 and 2017 before he was out of the league.
He was the 24th pick. Not exactly a top tier prospect
@@awesome123306 Stop it. Lamar Jackson was the last pick of the first round in the 2018 draft. No only was he most polarizing prospect now looking back he just might’ve been the best offensive player drafted that season.
@@justice85151If Josh Allen didn't exist. Lamar's career isn't aging well.
I actually like the comp between Heath Shuler and Trey Lance. 3rd overall pick that got overshadowed by a fan favorite 7th round pick that might not get remembered the way they should because of the way their team rebounded. If the Niners win a Superbowl with Purdy, this will 100% get remembered, but not the same way Trubisky gets remembered.
Their parallels are insane.
Even though Lance hasn't been great so far, he has been injured a lot and I was really shocked when I heard he was traded. Who knows maybe if healthy and in new scenery maybe he can still have a great career. Another great video my friend.
Lance hasn't been great because he's been terrible. He won't get enough playing time to ever develop. He's too far from being a starter to get on the field.
@@ryandegrave8978we haven’t seen enough to really even decide that he’s been terrible.
gawd damn that set up. how much you gotta spend to achieve that peak style?
We haven't seen enough of him to even remotely compare the two.
Bit of a random question, what's the name of the music in the background? Great video by the way.😊
Thanks! It’s a custom track I made myself
Josh Allen's progress in 2020 is the reason Lance was drafted so high. Was nice of him to get the Dolphins 3 1st rounders.
yea since mahomes and allen’s emergence I feel like teams are willing to take bigger risks on qbs
He really benefited from his collegiate division having a Spring season long enough to still go on with that draft occurred
Let’s not forget that it’s these same Cowboys that traded for Ryan Leaf!
Bengals could’ve gotten Brady in 2000 wow
With Brock Purdy becoming a big star, Trey Lance is looking more and more like a bust.
The Bengals turned down the Saints offer of the entire 1999 draft for the top pick used on Smith..which the Saints later send to Washington (the Ricky Williams trade)
Major difference : Akili straight up sucked. Trey barely saw the field and when he did, they ran him straight to the ground. Shanahan is not a QB Whisperer, how they used Trey proves it. It's just clear he didn't want him. He's damn lucky Brock came out of nowhere and his offense can carry all the mid QBs he throws out every year.
McCarthy actually knows how to handle Quarterbacks, Dallas is the perfect spot for him to revive his career, now that he'll play for a team that TRULY believes in him. End of story.
@@sheistybossmanI think they made a great pickup for the price. Trey Lance is not the second coming of RG3, but he can surely fit into the player profile of dak prescott and learn from his play style. I liked this move for Dallas
@@marcusmcgraw3519 If he can develop his passing game ? It's game over
Nawh bro he’s pretty bad
It's so funny that this is literally a video telling you that Lance sucks exactly as bad as Smith. And yah maybe someday he will suck as bad as Prescott.
The 49ers sure took a bath on Trey Lance
Couch and Smith would both end up backing up Favre in Green Bay for a stint
Never understood the Trey Lance fascination.
I disagree only in that Trey Lance reminds me of another 3rd overall Bengals quarterback bust with Jack Thompson in 1979. In that after drafting Thompson, Ken Anderson took the Bengals to the Super Bowl and never actually needed him and for the 49ers they went to the NFC Championship with their existing quarterback corps and never actually needed him.
*GREAT CALL!!! I TOTALLY FORGOT ABOUT THAT!!! YOU WIN THE COMMENTS SO EMPHATICALLY I AM SAYING IT IN ALL CAPS AND BOLDED!!!*
Steve Young was also a huge bust with Tampa Bay. His career turned out pretty good. Don’t count out Trey yet. He’s with a much better coaching staff now.
Notably: The 2000 Browns and 2022 Bears both were 3 win teams
Zion Williamson turning out to be the biggest bust in all of sports history.
Who tf is paying you $200 for a youtube membership 😂
Smith went through how many different Offensive Coordinators. I feel if Akili Smith ened up in Philly, and McNabb ended up in Cincy, Smith would of had a successful career, and it would have been McNabb would have been a bust. Again, coaching can impact a player.
Definitely not as BAD as Ryan Leaf and Johnny Manziel.
Leaf was so bad the chargers got the 1st pick which was traded for l.t. he at least helped his team by being so bad it helped them get their best player in team history
3:33 are you sure? another bad number 3 pick was solomon thomas by, ironically, the 49ers.
Lance career isn’t over so he can’t be labeled a bust yet
JG9 emphasized “draft bust.” As in, a bust for the team that drafted him. Which by this logic Lance absolutely is
Cope harder
Amazing video
If you thought Akili was bad, his teammate at the U of O, Saladin McCullough, didn't get drafted in the NFL because he preferred hanging out at the mall then getting in shape for the combines.
To be fair Akili Smith, the 1999 Bengals were absolutely trash, he had no chance at all, Trey Lance had a chance and wasnt given it, losing your job to injury is shitty
Akili Smith was a combine phenomenon that should never been drafted as high as he was. The 49's are putting too much weight on 1/2 a good season by a "mr irrelevant" QB. Trading Lance may be their biggest mistake yet.
Great Video
Somewhat similar. Back in the day the the Bengals were a very poorly ran franchise, much different than the 49ers today. They both were raw QB’s who played little in college. Smith played way more in the NFL to this point. Akili had 5 passing touchdowns in 17 career starts. Trey has 5 touchdowns in only 4 games started. We saw a lot more of Smith then we have of Lance. Smith was way worse then Lance though.
Yeah, it really hurt the point of the video that Smith got 4x as much playing time as Lance
Akili Smith would of been decent in today NFL where they don't force playing into a system. But Akili Smith was just bad and he had talent around him. Trey Lance, we haven't seen at all.
"back in the day" lol
Bengals were trash for years until Joey B came along.
@@jharp08No he wouldn't have.
The fact that both Lance and Wentz both went to the same school, played in the same system AND both suffered leg injuries makes me think why the 9ers gave up on him. Look how Wentz is doing post injury.
This is the most incredibly scary in depth comparison in all of football really almost errie 😮
Lance is the biggest bust of all time. You cant trade 3 first round picks and have it completely fail.
I believe there is much more hope for Trey Lance than there ever was for Akili Smith. At least Lance has a chance of developing into a better pocket passer
Fascinating...
Completely unrelated: Have you ever thought about doing a video about the nose tackle position in the nfl (of lack thereof)?
I read your first word in Mr. Spock's voice.
Yeah, tim krumrie would be a great story. He was drafted in the tenth Rd. By mistake, they didn't even send him a plane ticket, he bought his own, showed up to camp and started kicking butt from day one. One of the best motors ever.
What was Lance's score on the wonderlick?
You beat me to it
@@LordTeaboBaggins first thing in my mind when I head "Akil.... Don't even have to hear the rest of the name.
I will never understand how the 9ers knew all of the risks with lance but still decided to trade a shit ton of picks for a D3 quarterback.
Wait, did that game between Chi and SF at 09:30 have black hashmarks painted on the field?
No, that was done by the graphics department in order to make the yard lines easier to see on television.
It's a race thing. White hashmarks were way to bigoted and had to be cancelled.
Fun fact about Trey Lance, he's only 23 and hasn't yet retired from football. If Geno Smith can make his first pro bowl in his mid 30's I think Trey can turn his career around as well.
The better comparison would be Tommy Maddox. Geno was a 2nd rounder while Maddox was seen as the air apparent to elway
When they said Trey Lance started only one season at North Dakota State, I thought "didn't Akili Smith start only one year at Oregon?"
When you said lance threw for 5 years, and Smith threw for 11 yards… they each threw for their jersey number.
Trey Lance was the QB that John Lynch wanted to replace Jimmy Garapallo. WTF were the Niners thinking ?? At least the Cowboys get someone to play at the scout QB position. It's like everyone is looking for the next big thing instead of developing the talent that they have. STUPID !!
Jimmy was good at throwing dumb picks when the team needs him lol he never showed up when it matters
I’m still pissed about that Ditka Saints trade the Bengals turned down in ‘99.
Anthony Richardson is next
Tim Couch, Donovan McNabb, Akili Smith. One nice career, two busts.
Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance. Lawrence looks good, Wilson is already a bust, Lance... don't know yet because he's been so hurt we haven't seen him play. But we could easily see one nice career, two busts.
Akili Smith was so bad that the 49ers passed on Jeff Tedford’s QB Aaron Rodgers.
Does how poorly Lance played poison the well for FCS QBs who want to make it to the NFL?
It probably prevents them going in the first round for a while. There are still guys that will be Day 2 and Day 3 picks. Jimmy G was a Day 2 pick and he played a Eastern Illinois
Yes. Yes he does. And he should. Also, thanks to Paxton Lynch no Memphis QB will ever even be invited to an NFL camp again.
They are NOT remotely identical, I don't care what the numbers say. I remember Smith, he wasn't good. I'm a 49er fan and have watched Trey from day 1, and his issue was being overly green, but as games go on you witness him getting better. He's made key mechanical changes to his throwing motion and this camp he's been VERY accurate with his throws. This is the sort of video that's gonna look really stupid in 2 years.
Whatever you say buddy
Good video. Great info. Even better job 👌🏿
Lance may be a bust; but in fairness, Akili started 15 games in his first two seasons; Lance started 4. Lance got his 5 TDs in his first two starts; Akili took 15 games to get 5 TDs. Akili got a legitimate chance and he was awful. Lance hasn't gotten much of a chance yet due to injuries.
He’s had plenty of chances. And he opted out of the Covid year, which was his decision
17 starts in 4 years…
Did Trey Lance also score a 3 on the Wonderlic?
The jury is still out on Lance’s potential and I hope he reaches it but at least we can all laugh at the 9ers for giving up 3 1sts for him. It’s even worse than when the eagles traded up for Wentz
Wentz was nasty until he got hurt
Wentz earned a second contract and had a very good career. Trey has not shown he can play. If we can overcome our bias Wentz was a better athlete than Trey. Better runner. Better arm. Better everything
Who is the bigger QB bust for the 49ers franchise Trey Lance or Giovanni Carmazzi??
Lance by a long shot
😂😂 Interesting comparison. Shows college career doesn't always translate into the pro game. The pro game is a lot quicker. The pro game has a lot better players. Competition level is a lot difference. Shows evaluation of QB, isn't just size, arm strength, mobility measurebles. Intangibles is reading defenses, processing chaos, n anticipation.
Trey Lance split the fan base in a toxic way also... Those who liked Lance said he was strong, athletic, and mobile but then when Shanahan tried to run him they all said that Kyle had "sabotaged" trey by running him. Wtf? It was never going to work cuz people are dumb and dont know what they want evidently. I would have picked Mac Jones and let him learn from Jimmy G personally but i'm not a GM. Lol🤷
For some reason i always have in my head that akili was drafted more in mid 90s than latter 90s, dont know why.
Can we really put Trey Lance in Akili Smith territory when he's played *8* games in his career thus far? Maybe the Niners saw something behind the scenes that we haven't, but we didn't get to see if Trey might've improved over the course of the previous year because he broke his leg in Week 2. With that being said, him being shipped out to be qb 3 somewhere else means his career is likely over.
Yeah this is a bit of a stretch
Trey Lance isn't done yet. Ok, he is, but still!
You ever consider doing a Dumb Decisions on Ray Buchanan?
Don't forget that the 2022 49ers/Bears game was played in a downpour. Passing in the rain is extremely difficult. I wouldn't call Lance a carbon copy of Smith yet. Brock Purdy threw everything into flux. If not for Lance's major ankle injury, Purdy's emergence and Jimmy Garoppolo being fragile, Lance might still be a Niner today. Smith was just awful, so the circumstances aren't entirely the same.
Lance was awful.
@@ryandegrave8978people be making every excuse under the sun for Lance
@@towerX- No kidding, bro. I can't tell you how many times I've heard people whine about the fact that it was raining in Chicago. Like he's the first person to ever play in the rain...
@@ryandegrave8978 all these people trying to defend Trey are probably the same people who trash Jimmy G when he was with the 9ers, trying to save face now that Lance may be a bust.
@@towerX- The people who hated Jimmy were so quick to jump on the Lance bandwagon, pretending he was everything Jimmy wasn't. "He's so athletic! He can run fast and throw a ball far, blah blah blah..." Now that everyone can see what we've been saying for 2 years, they're left with no choice but to make sorry excuses.
Well to be fair. Akili Smith surprisingly enough. Play more games than Trey Lance did. Plus let’s not forget that Trey Lance got hurt at the beginning of last season and was out for the entire year. So for me personally. I wouldn’t label Trey Lance a bust just quite yet
My neighbor predicted that Trey Lance would be Akiii Smith
The problem with Lance is that he didn’t have a lot of experience even coming into the nfl. The other problem with Lance is the current culture of the nfl. They no longer develop players. But honestly the problem starts with MONEY! Colleges want the 4/5 star recruits and they are expecting to play right away in college and then the NFL expects them to come in and play right away. If I recall correctly Smith didn’t get many years at Oregon either. I remember a time when the NFL would pass on a quarterback that ran the ball to much. He would have to go to Canada and play. Now most of the non runners have to go to Canada. Money and instant gratification are Lances enemy. And yes North Dakota State is a big time school now. Every year they go to the FCS championship game. They should be forced into the FBS.
90% sure that NDSU has already secured a move to Mountain West
Going to be good.
Injury similar too
This video is way too ducking negative on lance dude
I don’t know that I’d call Lance a bust. He’s really more like a High School QB playing in the NFL, due to the limited playing time he’s had. If I was Jerry, I’d find out who coached up Hurts and send Lance to him for help. Because Hurts looked like a different man last year, compared to the years before. But I noticed you didn’t even put one of their TD passes on the video.
#DC4L
Whiners is, Whiners does..
Imagine going from NDSU with only 318 Career Passing Attempts in college to the #3 overall pick? 🤷
Really just kind of creepy. The Saints offered everybody that package or similar that year. Now nobody does anything that nuts.
Crazy thing about the Bengals shooting down that trade is that they would have gotten they're guy anyway. The team in between the Saints and Bengals we're the Colts who had Peyton Manning. They literally passed up the trade because of the money😂
The 49era team is light years ahead of what the bengals were
U should look at the number trey played 5 games thats over 200k a minute the most ever in any sports
IIRC every draft expert thought Lance was a reach and because it didn't pay off wasn't his fault. Smith was supposed to be a sure thing.
Perhaps it's time to teams to start thinking when somebody suddenly jumps off the draft board. A lot of players who go from 3rd round picks to 1st round or top 10 after one good season are a real gamble. Marino had an off senior season in College and dropped behind Eason OBrien and Blackedge. Was never sold on Lance with his window of work. Unlike.Carson Wemtz from NDSU he came in and never caught on. Wentz was good till his injury
First time I don't feel anything from your post.
Ohh well...
