Everything is set up in a way so as not to trigger suspicion until it’s too late, but in the end, the person recognizes the trap they’ve been lured into. In my opinion it’s the dawning realization that really defines the soul of a rickroll, and in this case, use of the lyrics out of context is both the camouflage for the trap and the ultimate unveiling of it. Hiding the song this way is a test of how long it takes someone to notice, a cheeky attempt to see if it might even slip by completely undetected. Or, if someone has the song so seared into their brain that they know exactly what’s going on and are groaning by the first recited line, like I did.
