    As a lifelong Niners fan, all I can do is laugh. Nick is right that the whole situation is a mess, and the ONLY saving grace is that we lucked into Purdy. Which by the way, he still has to replicate what he did last year to prove it wasn't a fluke. Greg said it correctly that it's beyond confusing.
    *Edit*
    Some of ya'll don't understand what I mean by mess when talking about our QB situation. I'm not just referring to just this year. It's Kyle's entire tenure and to a degree beyond that. The amount of miscalculations and bad evaluations the team has made are laughable. Brock is great, but it remains to be seen if he is that after 8 games and an injury. I remember when Kaepernick was crown the future greatest QB ever, but look how that turned out. This was after we passed on A-Rod for Alex Smith. This current regime told us Jimmy G was the answer and even turned away Tom Brady. Only for them to trade the farm for his future replacement, Trey Lance. They told us Trey would be the guy, theough words and drafting him in that fashion. Now, to admit, they whiffed so badly on him is so confusing to Greg's point. That's also why I say they lucked into Brock because he was never part of the plan. If he was, then why was he QB3 last year. He wasn't even QB2 because they instead gave that to the guy they tried to move one from and who didn't practice all summer, Jimmy.
    Hence, it's a mess, and I'm not even going to factor in our horrible injury history at the position.

    Brou is deflecting. This has nothing to do with Purdy. This is about the Niners’ ability to manage assets. That Trey Lance trade might eliminate their window because of all the assets they moved for him. Nick is right, if they just draft at 12 and trusted their scouting and other position evaluations, a Lombardi felt inevitable. Instead, they took a mammoth gamble when they already had a championship contender and now might have squandered it.

    • @renaldoawesomesauce1654
      @renaldoawesomesauce1654 9 месяцев назад +8

      While that's true, the butterfly effect is still something to consider. There's no guarantee that Purdy would have been their pickup had they not traded up for Lance. Had they not taken lance, they may have drafted another QB with another pick instead and purdy would have been undiscovered. It sucks that they gave up their capital for a total bust in Lance, but at least they came away with a QB who was top 3 last year in his games played. Their window is wide open for a championship because of Purdy. Health might interfere with that hope, but that's always been Shanny's problem. He's been getting his QBs hurt for years and blaming it on the QB but nobody blames him. Started with RG3 and he still doesn't protect them well even in San Fran.

    Trey played well in the 2nd preseason game, especially for a guy who didn't practice for a year because of an injury, and whose last full season of play was 4 seasons ago. I'm surprised at the speed with which he is being written off when he barely played in the NFL. Darnold started multiple games over many years & wasn't good but he's being given a chance(happy for him). This kid hasn't even played NFL games. It's the lack of patience after giving up so much for him, that makes shanahan look terrible in my opinion.

    • @luisibave3173

      He got injured the first 2 seasons, a finger, then a knee and then the broken ankle last year on his second game, he was given the chance, it just didn't happen, it is unfortunate but it is what it is, and given the short windows in the NFL, I agree with their approach, they need to go with whoever gives them the better chance, and I believe is Purdy, Darnold and Lance, in that order, Lance needs to be more consistent

    • @rickyrobby8133
      @rickyrobby8133 9 месяцев назад +9

      How can you be “surprised” by it when you have next to no information on him? He isn’t being “written off,” but clearly he isn’t performing well enough in practice, to the point that they don’t believe he’s even a viable backup in front of Darnold.
      You’re acting like they’re just randomly selecting who’s going to play. They didn’t just say “oh that Darnold guy is so cool, we’re making him the backup, since Trey didn’t laugh at my joke.” You saw Lance throw 18 passes and concluded he’s getting shafted, despite the 49ers seeing him EVERY SINGLE DAY in practice. For all you know every pass he threw was a wrong and he missed the right read.
      Your opinion doesn’t make sense, they have all the reason in the world to want Trey Lance to work out, that clearly isn’t happening because he can’t beat out Darnold. If he’s not even the backup, it says a lot more about him than the Niners. The expectations for a backup QB are not extraordinarily high.

Since the team is so stacked right now they can withstand the loss of 3 first round players but as more and more players come off their rookie deals and they have to pay purdy or whoever the lack of top tier talent still on rookie deals will start to hurt them. I think the *actual* problem is that 49ers have 3 QBs that they'd ideally like to keep but they can't.
    Lance played well in the 2nd pre-season game, better than Darnold imo.
    I still think Lance *could* be a great QB but he needs reps, lots of them and SF would rather focus on Purdy which makes sense because of how well he played last year.
    Darnold is the logical back-up, having 2 rookie-ish QBs is a bad place to be, if anything happens to Purdy, Darnold can step in.
    If Lance was #2 he'd need to step in and develop, Darnold can just slot in and play the position.
    I don't think this means that Lance is bad or that the 49ers process stinks, it just means that Lance still needs a lot of development, SF would rather use that development on Purdy.

That's risky especially when they rely on that DC since Shanahan is not a defensive mind. You're banking on lightning striking twice. It wouldn't surprise me if their defense regresses. I’m gonna say something very unpopular here. Kyle has handled this situation as best as he possibly could and this is an unusual situation. Here’s what he did:
    1. Moved up in the draft for a potential franchise QB with a ready made roster.
    2. Made sure not to waste a year they were SB Contenders and had Lance sit a year behind Jimmy G (like we’ve seen rookie QBs do on competing teams).
    3. Made Lance the unquestioned starter in 2022 and handed the team over to him.
    Event #1: Lance gets hurt in the second game.
    4. Maximizes the Super Bowl window by trading for McCaffrey.
    5. Jimmy G plays very well, and then gets hurt.
    Event #2: Purdy goes 7-0, operates the offense better than Lance and as well as Jimmy G, leads them to the NFC Championship, with a 116 passer rating in his starts and they become the highest scoring team in the league during his starts before he gets injured.
    5. Kyle starts the player who ran his system best giving them the best chance to win a SB. Yes, I know Purdy isn’t necessarily as good as the stats are saying but the stats would say he’s great, which he’s not. The fact is, he did the best job running the offense and was pretty solid.
    6. Signs a potential backup that the league is out on in case of injuries which inevitably happen with this team.
    7. Does not fall into the sunk cost fallacy trap just because they gave up 3 picks for him. Starting Lance will not bring those picks back.
    The reason Lance hasn’t gotten his chance is because he was injured and Purdy played well enough for them to get as far as they did the year before. Not because of mismanagement. If these unlikely events do not happen, Trey Lance has had a full year starting and we’ve gotten to see where he is. You could argue they missed on the Lance pick, but we don’t know that yet, plus teams miss in high picks all the time, it wouldn’t be unusual, and we know there were rumblings that Shannahan didn’t even want Trey, he wanted Mac Jones and was overruled.
    Also everyone saying: they could’ve taken Parsons, except they wouldn’t have because we know they were looking for a QB that year.

    All I can say is if they don't at least make the Superbowl this year (they don't need to win it) then KS and Lynch should be fired. Because this will go down as one of the worst trades in NFL history and they have compounded their mistake by not developing Trey Lance and misusing him.

    Nick has one thing majorly wrong. They didn’t trade 2 firsts (and a swap) and a 3rd for Lance. They traded and moved up to #3 to draft a QB. They settled on Lance, he wasn’t what they originally moved up for. They traded up and then went okay who are we getting? And apparently forgot at the time rumors were coming out hard Kyle and front office were split on who to pick and that Kyle was forced to take Lance for upside and potential. Lance wasn’t even being talked about in the first or second round until 49ers moved up and nobody knew who they were taking. Even Mac Jones stock went from late first or 2nd rounder to he might get picked at 3.
    Yes 49ers made s dumb move trading up with no plan, but to be fair they never should have to begin with and somehow got lucky it didn’t cost them anything but some ridicule.

But Brou also said that if they didnt win, they cant blame the Trey Lance deal. Seems like he is talking out of both sides of his mouth.
