14:52 #33 blocking like that and getting it done because he was a QB in college.
"...Trey Lance is not used to it." is a critical point being made right there. The QB with the least confidence gets to stand behind the backup O-line and *#33 is at work* standing out because he's on the job instead of just 'playing a game.'
Lance having to play next to 32 is a nightmare. I tell my kids all the time Running Back at the next level is NOT all about running! anybody can run the ball but if you can pass block THAT is worth WAY MORE!@@PureMagma
Always a good idea to trade a boatload of picks for a four year+ project
And if Lance had come out rocking you would be praising how smart of a decision it was.
@@ch-yq5yn Absolutely and that's not hypocritical. You don't make that kind of trade unless you think he can start right away. That kind of trade should never be done on a project. Ever. Especially for a team that was contending. You can't afford to waste contending years with those picks on guys that can't contribute right away. If he came out rocking, then it was a great decision. For them to immediately have him sit made it an all-time horrible decision.
It'd still be a great move if he sat for a year and then they didn't hesitate to put him in as the starter the next year like the Chiefs did with Mahomes. But they didn't do that either. Shannahan was never enthusiastic about him to begin with and reportedly wanted someone else. That's an organizational failure to have a GM and a HC not in sync about a big draft pick, especially what they gave up for that draft pick.
The chances of that are quite low. I think a lot of people would still say it was a very risky gamble to make even if it worked out immediately. @@ch-yq5yn
@@ch-yq5ynTrey Lance is the niners Ryan Leaf/Jamarcus Russel but even worse than those two if you think about it
@@TheGeorgeD13 The plan was to sit him for a year and start the next. He was handed the keys in 2022, not only underperformed but got injured in week 2. His backups backup came in and balled out, earning the the job of starting QB. Its unfortunate that the big move ended up being a waste, but there was no time to plug in a young QB and cross fingers in hopes that he improves. I doubt Shanahan and Lynch were looking at someone else, because the only other options were Fields and Jones and we all can guess how that would've turned out.
The analytics on this video bout to take a leap lol
He said”damn he’s all over the place, the thing comes out like a tv” took me out 😭😭
Great to see Lance improve. Love seeing Latu get the catch after dealing with drops all camp.
Huge for his confidence.
Yeah I was really happy hearing his name getting called and it wasn’t for drops 😊
It's crazy that latu has had the drop issues because as a bama fan, he literally got the move to TE because he had such good hands for a linebacker. I'm sure the huge jump that TE's seems to face going to the NFL must be hitting him hard.
@@TinyEle Tony G and Jerry had Drops first year...its more of mental thing rather than a physical limitation... just got to get his confidence going
The bummer is that Trey still put some really terrible film up there in his first few minutes. I don't think he can afford much more of that. When Trey missed that wide open route (@13:35) the broadcast panned over to Kyle and he was just shaking his head in a sort of livid disbelief. Not a good sign. By the time he led the drive to win the game, he was playing against the Broncos' 3rd string defense. So I don't know if it was enough.
lance first drive - 2/3, 22 yards int
lance last 3 drives - 10/15, 151 yards, td
first drive ended with an interception on the screen but the last 3 drives resulted in a field goal, touchdown, field goal scores
again it was against 3rd stringers for the most part but at least lance is gaining some confidence
but we're also seeing lance actually continuing to start off slow but playing a lot better as he gets more playing time and into a rhythm on offense ... which was the case in the first preseason game vs las vegas too
lance first 3 drives: 2/4, 9 yards
lance last 3 drives: 8/11, 103 yards, td
which makes sense since he hadn't taken a snap or seen live action in a "real game" since week 2 of the 2022 season when he suffered that ankle injury ... so around 11 months
i mean if you look at lance's preseason combined stats thru the first two games it's not the doom and gloom many think it is
22/33, 285 yards, 2 td/1 int, 101.2 QB rating
jury is still out on lance as a whole but for those who think he's a bust or giving up on him are just in a rush to judge his career when he's barely gotten any consistent playing time on the field thru his first two seasons
even with that purdy likely will begin the 2023 season as the starting QB for the 49ers but it's way too early to come to a conclusion of lance's career and future until he actually gets playing time ... whether that's with the 49ers or with another NFL team
as a lance supporter i'm still hoping it's with the 49ers but not sure shanahan is onboard at this point as he's really bought into purdy and has had his eye on darnold since the 2018 NFL draft probably before they traded for jimmy g midway thru 2017 and even liked him darnold enough still to even think about trading for him in early 2021 before they moved up in march to #3 where they ultimately draft lance in april, and then signed him on day 1 in free agency earlier this year
And if you count the drops he prob goes for damn near 250 yards in a quarter and change the boy should be starting imo
I'll only add one thing. The stipulation of it being against the 3rd string really should stop. He is throwing to 3rd stringers and having 3rd stringers block for him. They weren't doing him any favors early on so let's not act like he did this with the starters against the 3rd string Broncos.
@@moparcrashdummyare we counting all the dropped interceptions that were thrown directly to defenders? Against starters those are picks. Then we're looking at like 7 turnovers in that span. He's not ready.
@@justified0043rd string defenders drop interceptions. 1 string defenses would've got half of those 7 dropped picks and created more.
I can't believe you're looking at stats and counting that Raider TD throw as a positive lol.
Just curious, what do you think of 7 step drops under center?
Worked for Brady for decades

Would pile up the rushing yards against these modern 220 pound linebackers.
I say it's viable as long as the QB is a running threat as well.
Outstanding work as always JT. Love your honesty.
Excellent breakdown! Lance hasn't given up that's for certain. BUT... can we discuss the ELEPHANT on the field #32 (T. Davis-Price) is like watching a clown-car zipping around *aimlessly* during every. single. play. 🚙 🛑
He should get cut, TDP no bueno
it was 22
@@BrandonAiyukSZN 22 is McNichols. TDP is 32, and he can't block to save his life.
22 and 32
Makes sense why Jordan mason passed tdp so quick last year
I rarely, if ever, comment on your channel, but I wanted to drop a quick note on how much I appreciate these breakdowns… 😎🙌🏽… btw, the play breakdown on the 7-step drop, 1000% facts…
great content...i learn alot watching you break it all down.
Watching this helps me appreciate Brock purdy
Amazing analysis. Thanks for the breakdown. Fair assessment. Just subscribed. Thanks
Thanks and welcome
The fact that lance is still like the youngest qb in the league means he still has alot of time to get better. Just hope he gets that chance whether its on the niners or elsewhere
We don't need another alex smith at the 49ers expense?
As a Niners fan I honestly hope Trey goes somewhere else. Not out of hate but out of the fact that Kyle is clearly in win now mode with big contracts coming up he wont be able to give Trey those crucial snaps whereas Sam Darnold and to an extent Brock Purdy are proven to be capable. For the benefit of his development and his career Trey should go somewhere else where they’ll focus on developing his instincts. But the problem is giving up the farm for trey to now trade him away he doesnt have very much value as of now. So we’ll see how the office manages it
Hes an amazing qb already. Go watch replays vs Bears. He was insane in monsoon weather. I was shocked how good he was. Every game it was bad weather and then he got hurt... The good weather game against the texans year before he won the game. Made some insane passes.
Brock Purdy is like 3 months older than Trey
He isn't the youngest. Rookies and Sam Howell are all younger.
Love the film breakdowns you do
Hell yeah been waiting for this. Thanks for not making me wait long
Missing the other dime to Snead on a cross. He threaded it with the db draped on his back. Trey is making progress and I love to see it. Kid just needs more reps!
More reps? For him to get more reps means that other better QBs on the roster is going to take less. Why? He is getting traded. He isn’t a starter and a borderline backup.
When that ball got tipped i thought he would fold. To his credit he kept going
Love your work. Great content
Shared your channel on the Bleacher Report community... Good stuff JT!!
good analysis tysm 4 sharing
Great content
Prophetic… Dallas Metroplex is now the Trey Area. Great analysis, good call.
The way JT draws these up with the different colors makes it very easy to follow.
Hey JT...love the abundance of videos during the preseason. Amazing content. Question: why is the 7 step drop so suboptimal in the modern game?
The defensive line play has SIGNIFICANTLY gotten faster since homeboy played. I thought he was on the 9ers when Martz was OC in 08. But that's the main reason. This is usually only done if there are deep routes to give the receivers extra time to get they asses down the field.
It’s the athleticism of the Defense. If you have a great offensive line that can form that pocket, ok. But it’s very risky based on how fast these guys are now.
just found this channel and it rocks
Tarik Glenn used to be fantastic with that slingshot. He'd shove a guy upfield then come back and block a second dude on screens and draws. The Colts O-line was never the same once he retired.
Hey JT, great analysis of trey lance in this video. I saw your nfl films video, which team do you give your allegiance to? Or which team or teams do you support or want to win?
thanks for down distance and score love it
Hey just a question on Hb screens is the tackle on the screen side sposed to block and hold the defender so he’s in the way of the pass ,or is he supposed to block 2 seconds and let his men get upfield to the qb so it’s a lane to throw the ball just a question???
Love your stuff, but I think you should have included the Willie Snead slant / in. From the tv look, it sure looked like his best throw of the night.
Seriously the Snead throw is a pass PURDY never makes in his life
100 percent. Love purdy of course but that snead bullet reminded me of 2016 falcons. AIR YARDS@@johnb6546
Yeah I thought after almost all of the highly critical plays were included that this would be in there for sure. It’s absolutely his best play of the night and it was ignored, really think that’s a shame
Lol how did this guy not include the most exciting throw of Treys night...
@@johnb6546
Oh look, it's John B the 🤡making his rounds lying/hating on Brock Purdy and shilling for Trey for reasons that transcend anything football-related (yes, folks, that is correct. John here is purely motivated by race). Listen ya mook, being able to throw the ball far doesn't make someone a good quarterback. Not to mention, you're wrong. Brock can and has made that throw, and it wasn't against a third sting defense.
I remember JTO 7-step drops under Singletary and Martz LOL
I get the 49ers not wanting to let the guy go, because you can see the talent... but man, does that kid need reps. He gets visibly better as games go on... like he's learning on the fly haha.
He's gotta play football, and I'm not sure he'll get to on the Niners (for understandable reasons). Although with their injury history... you never know haha.
Facts it’s always been about reps. What is remarkable with Trey is despite the slow/rough starts he seems to learn, adjust and get better “IN-GAME” which is a plus rather than just adjusting next game.
@@PhrozenThumbz but why and how does he lose all this by the time the next game starts? He looks like he should of year 1 and its year 3. He shows flashes but until he can show that he is not a liability he needs to stay on the bench and keep learning. I am happy for him though that he had some good plays to put on tape, he needed it.
@@brohymn003 I wouldn’t say he loses all of it the next game. The year 3 take to me is a bit flawed and misleading. He’s essentially been practicing for 3 years. He hasn’t had 3 years worth of live in game reps like Sam Darnold example or he his QB draft counterparts. He’s played less than 20 full quarters of live NFL snaps including preseason in those “3 years”. What I’m saying is the fact that you literally see him improve in game is remarkable within itself.
@@brohymn003 Sitting him more isn’t going to do anymore favors. He now has to CONSISTENTLY take what he’s learned through film and in practice without getting hit and translate that to live games where he can get hit, the speed is different, pressure is different, and defensive schemes are different from what his own team runs all the time in practice and all that takes live in game reps and experience. The question is at this point how much can he get that in San Francisco 🤷🏽♂️
The 49ers won't let Trey go for the simple fact that in Kyle's offensive schemes. The qb will get hurt at some point during a single season. Matt Ryan was probably the only exception. Why do y'all think the 49ers have always kept 3 QBs every season?
You are the best at breakdowns.
The lack of timing and vision is very real. Idk if the nfl is the place you can figure something like that out. Especially with his overall lack of passing experience
#33 is Jack "Hammer" Colletto. An UDFA, he played QB, MLB, FB, TE, and WR for the Oregon State Beavers. A true "Mr Do it all" football player. He is clearly being trained to replace "Juice", who is making $7m and will make $7.5m+ in the coming years. SF is doubtlessly looking for ways to save money with Bosa now and other expensive contracts coming up.
FB is just a position that shouldn't be paying that much for. While Juice is great, they already have DS, GK, BA, and CMC. They have enough weapons and juice just won't get many looks
@@rudysal1429 - His contract was back loaded I expect the 49ers to keep him through ot the end of his deal rather than releasing him, and nobody is going to trade for an expensive and aging FB.
To be fair, Juice is more than "just a FB". He is a fantastic catcher of the football. That being said, you are correct. That is why Jack Colletto is obviously being trained up as his replacement. Don't be surprised to see him make the 53 as a special teams player and locking him up so someone else doesn't scoop him. I could easily see Seattle snagging him within minutes of him hitting the waver wire.
Great assessment.
Hello. Can I ask you, What video edition program you use?
17:55 "He should look like this more." Gotta play ball to get better!
On the curls with the hook over the ball play you do not like, is it the incorporation of the hook into the read or other aspects of the play you dislike? Do you have problems with a mirrored curl-flat concept? I like the hook with a drive underneath to flat from where hook came from because it clears it out. Jim Harbaugh runs it a lot.
Lance just got traded- your comment about him being borderline was on-point! 😮
Damn this is so good.
That play in the video starting around the 9:26 mark, while the RB wasn't one of the first two primary reads, if Lance had looked left and tossed the ball to 33 that looked to be at least a 10 yard gain as he was wide open with zero coverage.
Trey started rough, but he clearly turned it around. Great game for Trey.
Great to see him improve in the game. You can't call it a great game, though. The start was terrible, with some really bad calls. Let's see if he can extend the good plays and have a bit more consistency.
@@mihaiconstantin-pau5116 tbh he is super raw, he didnt play a ton in college, but he has really great flashes. He jsut needs more live reps. And he can develop into a really good QB
Against scrubs
good game at best. still had 2 dropped ints
He screams of a player that just needs reps. All the dink and dunk passes that he has trouble with are rhythm passes, he just needs to be able to get into rhythm
I’ve been saying all preseason how god mf awful the blocking for Lance is awful. It’s so rough, it’s ridiculous
He’s also playing against 3’s and 4’s 😂
its like kyle paid his line =P
@@A_r78 and also playing with 4’s and unemployeds
JT called this out but TDP literally runs through the O-Line's hands and makes them lose reps lol
@@stanleywang7367 yea TDP isn’t great at pass pro either, but that doesn’t help a ton when ur LT nd RT I get best off the edge effortlessly, and your inside guys are get thrown to the side in one move. I kinda understand the free man rushing in when the kinda overloaded a side, that takes a real good experienced cohesive line to be able to slide the protection and notice something like that. But a center or a guard shouldn’t be getting beat inside the phone booth when they’re locked up 1 on 1, There nothing you can do about that aside from getting rid of the player getting beat
I love this channel just because JT is such a QB geek.😂
Love 3,5,and 7 step drops. I’m a fan of all under center play
if' it's gonna be 7 why not just make it a 3 from pistol
Kyle quickly saw the def. end just using his quickness to bust outside. Soon called the QB run play which allowed Lance to break free, unfortunately called back on needless holding. Kyle and Trey adjusted after 2 plays and the number of drop steps was no longer an issue. You just need to recognize who's coming from the backside.
I wish Trey would start this season so we can get more of these breakdowns from JT. Great objective work
I would love a JT breakdown of Kyle’s offense. So many commentators lavish praise on Kyle, but this breakdown points out some weaknesses.
It's a preseason game. Do you think he wants to show everything he schemed up for the year?
@tikka300wsm5 I doubt he was talking about breaking down preseason when there's no game planning going on.
Kyle is no genius 💀
i think JT generally dislike kyle's dropback passing offense, but his playaction offense is elite.

It was the best that I have seen him play he did pretty good....
This has nothing to do with football. But I appreciate the little things like the subscribe reminder that’s dressed as a text message, ding and all. That’s one of the better ones I’ve seen. 😅 Random but other than that, love the content!
Trey has all the physical attributes he just needs reps, hasn't really played enough, this off season and preseason is crucial to his future success...
I'm always conflicted with these ND State guys. On one hand, I'm supposed to hate them an SD State grad (South Dakota, not San Diego).
On the other hand, Dakotans kinda have to stick together on the National stage. There are so few of us...
Hope Lance gets the opportunity to develop the way he was projected.
Treylusionals can’t wrap their head around that treys not who they’d hoped he’d be, and it’s easier for weak people to make excuse after excuse after excuse.. instead of admitting they were just wrong

You can also put that INT on OL #78 who let his guy completely go which allowed him to put his hands up like that instead of being engaged in a block. Not that much higher and he could over throw the RB or allow too much hang time. I think they split the fault at most
I love how JT shits on the play calls of the boy genius Kyle
Trey Lance demonstrates the Peter Principle. He was competent against the third string. His level of incompetence was second string.

I’m enjoying Treys journey. I think he’s going to be a star. I don’t care what anyone says about the kid. He just needs more reps and opportunity to make mistakes and to learn from those mistakes. Honestly, he needs to play. Love the growth from the young man and love the channel💯
Star is a stretch but he’s definitely got a shot at making a career as a NFL QB.
@@illtones_It’s not a stretch for me. This dude can become a super star. He just needs to play and work out the wrinkles. He never had that opportunity to grow in game. Am I the only one who hates screen passes in general? They almost always result in an immediate tackle, loss for yards, or a couple steps at best.
He just needs time and reps........ The talent is there. You got to realize Brock Purdy has like 4 years of live reps over Trey. College and Pro. He is going to make mistakes to learn from at 22 years old. HE HAS IMPROVED! On his own, in his own time and he deserves respect for that.. ....
So you expect he should jsut be handed it to him? They did that already and it was a disaster because they moved up and Lynch pushed him on Kyle and you know it and he needs another 3 years at least. You cant keep using upside talent as a excuse he has to beat out Brock and he cant and youre like but but but reps please Trey Area......Should have never moved up to draft him and got him probably 2nd round and cheaper and just keep Jimmy for a few more years
@CynicallyObnoxious how was it a disaster when he played 1 game ?

Great analysis intelligently presented. Lance needs reps of course but the SF OL depth is a fire drill. So are the damn clickbaiters who get at his confidence. I know he’s intelligent and dismisses the noise, but still there are hesitations visible of film. Improvement is a realistic goal. I’d keep all three
“Wide ass open” cracks me up for some reason. I just keep picturing some dude over in the flat uncovered, spreading his butt cheeks haha. Maybe I need to get some help
I'm with JT on the 7 drop. Played QB in highschool and hated doing the 7 step drop under center. I really preferred the pistol offense.

Is there any thought that Willis should/could box out that defender?
Yes sirrrr!!!!
Just curious if anyone knows of other former players who evaluate other positions? I love the QB school, but I'd also love a RB school, DE school, etc.
Only one I know is the football scout, he does OL stuff but he's not an former NFL player
11:33 - give the man some credit. He was able to diagnose that the route got jumped and he compensated by flicking the wrist to get the ball further upfield to create a second window and avoid the INT. Based on the single-route we saw earlier, it's clear that they're trying to make the game 1-read for Trey and this shows that he is athletic enough to improvise mid-motion.
That said... he could be looking left after a pump fake if he were Big Ben.
making the game 1 read in that way is horrible and like JT said a big F you to the QB, it was right after the missed crosser too
The back played for himself I feel like.
The bad throw was after he got it a couple times. He has to calm himself after getting pressured.
i like Trey a lot. he definitely has a lot of work to do but his potential ceiling is crazy high. Purdy or Lance idc who it is as long as one of them leads up to #6
it's so weird that he has this tendency to go from not good enough for the NFL to making precise decisive dots 6 or 7 plays in a row. As a 49ers fan I obviously think Purdy should start, but I'm so so curious to see how he would do with more experience. He just can't buy in-game reps with his situation. Hopefully he gets a drive or two with the starting O-line and without Davis-Price
