Great video! Can't really blame a map creator for jumping at the chance for their map to be made official though, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity for most
There's just this eerie feeling I get whenever I join a Wutville server, it doesn't feel like a real map that's been added into the game. It felt like I was going crazy the first time I played it.
Not only that, it seems to have an aura of insanity. One game which I thought was just about to be lost turned out to be a bunch of people on the "Party Bus" just taunting.

@Source Dasher Can't agree that Valve has always been shitty, at least until 2012. Most likely they need a new structural plan, prohibit the possibility of changing the project and more communication with community. It's a sad that these are only dreams...
I really think problems are starting to come from their whole "no bosses, do whatever" montra, as it feels like there's no direction or plans made to keep things going. "Just add some crap every once in a while" will only get this game so far.
This is the saddest thing, even if force employees to return to the project, there is no guarantee that they will know what to do and will be able to support TF2 and its community with normal and high-quality content. I need you to go back to the time when the community was listening and have a more active dialogue with them. If I could go back in time to "End of the Line"...
Yeah this is basically Valves fault tbh. The map creator didn't have the skills and experience needed to recognize the flaws in their map and valves are basically subjecting them to ridicule.
I think Thirteen would be a fool to say "no." But perhaps he could have negotiated with Valve, and asked them to add it next year. That way he would have time to play-test it properly and polish the textures.
@@commcrimson9999 Sure the map is a nostalgic community map, but I think it should stick to being a community map. Already Wutville shows that the community isn’t exactly into meme maps being officially added, and as beloved as the Mario Kart map is, it would only show that Valve has no map standards at all and would allow a map with no objective that is full of random stuff

This makes me wonder if there aren’t enough good smissmas themed maps on the workshop. That’s why we got three out of four maps that are actually smissmas themed and one of the three is janky af. That’s two decent smissmas maps that Valve was able to find in the workshop out of the many other options. The irony is that pier, the non smissmas map that was added is the best map for the update. If these maps are only available for smissmas, then I hope that pier will stay available permanently since it’s not smissmas themed and it’s a pretty fun map.
I think the only yearly exclusive maps are Halloween since other maps added during Smissmas are still playable. Granted I don’t think many people would mind if Wutville was a Smissmas exclusive map

Ok just for the record, the creator of the map stated he talked to valve and it’s already been resolved and he's gonna go back and fix it, btw that map was uploaded to the tf2 workshop in 2016 4 years ago. At one point the creator of the map said that he had apparently given up on tf2 creating and etc. The map creator didn’t deserve the hate from this at all...
i feel like people are mad that this dude even agreed in the first place, but if valve themselves randomly asked for your map to be in tf2 would you not want that?
Cant wait for them to do nothing in smissmas next year for fear of backlash. Remember when they said they werent going to do community updates again? Im scared its going to be like that all over again..
With community updates, the TF Team decided to stop doing them because of drama between content creators and issues with content ownership. These newer updates are the TF Team just shooting themselves in the foot and not understanding why their foot is suddenly bleeding.
@@Jakapoa more like the TFperson lol. Now I’m not 100% sure but I’m pretty sure only 1 guy is working on tf2 for fun rn I’m not saying they couldn’t have asked a couple friends to help play test but it explains a lot y’know.
I've also heard this claim floating around. It's pretty certain that dario (the mannpower dev) is behind a lot of new updates, hence the mannpower updates. Though nobody can verify if it's more than just him. Kinda scary that content updates are possibly handled by only one person.
@@Jakapoa There are 3 (now 4) people who work on TF2 consistently Eric Smith, Jill, Dave Riller, and recently Dario Casali they do leave TF2 to work on other games quite often though such as HL:A and Valve's unreleased project Citadel.

@@thegrandnil764 Okay then, let’s add cp_orange, or cp_mariokart, but hey, it’s okay, just don’t play it. There must be a standard to map design, and every map must have some sort of play style, bases, flanking routes, objectives, etc. What if in a game, 75% of maps were like this, buggy, broken shit that no one likes, or want to play. Would your excuse be “Just don’t play it?”
@@thegrandnil764 Would a new player be happy with that? A new player, just installed, knows nothing of the game, will hop into a casual match. If they end up in bad maps 75% of the time, they'll uninstall before the end of the day. You can't expect a new player to know what maps to search for.
12:38 did he really agree? I mean, if you're just told to get this map ready with no warning, it's likely Valve already had full intention of adding it to the game whether it was ready or not. How do you know he wasn't like "WTF, that's not even remotely enough time to fix this map" and the TF team just went "Lol, not our problem."
Being that it's their map, they do have some control over it. It would probably feel weird saying "no" to valve, and there's a chance they may have steamrolled it through anyway, but it would absolutely mean more than nothing at all.
@@RickJaeger It would be weird yes, but you'd be sparing yourself a lot of complaints and hate from a map that you know is bad and/or unfinished. Its worse to have your name on something that is hated a lot by the community as opposed to not being recognized at all (up until that point at least)

I've been playing TF2 on and off for almost ten years, and I've always been impressed by the careful design of maps and the delicate influence they have on gameplay. Letting something like this slide is... incredibly disappointing.
Wutville had so much potential I remember reading the name and being like “ooooo a dr Seuss styled map this could be amazing” and then it just looked like a 2015 trade server
“Wutville” sounds like a joke map name, yet I can’t help but feel like that wasn’t the intent. It’s unfortunate how indicative it is of the map’s quality.
I think that was supposed to be the idea, it was the ugly Christmas sweater of maps. But it’s like cp_orange; just because it’s a fun joke map doesn’t mean it should be on official servers.
“Somethings wrong with valve. And it needs to change.” That was the best quote I have ever heard, and it really portrays how possibly in the future, the tf2 fans who have liked every update and didn’t complain much, will eventually quit.
I'd like to also note that Wutville's creator made this a long time ago and his mapping skills have FAR improved. Fishladder is a super cool map, its hard to believe it and wutville were made by the same guy.
So while yes this was a huge misstep, overall I think that the update was good, we got new taunts, new maps (the rest of which are pretty fun), and of course, the best part of the update THE HOLY LOCALIZATION FILES.

Before the video even started I had a good idea what the first thing commented on would be and, yup, naturally its the people in denial that lap up anything and pass it off as "at least its something!". Heard a ton of it the first match I had on the map, and after over 10 years of playing TF2 I knew instantly the map was terrible. Bitter sweet was the end of the map, after being spawn camped for 4 minutes straight, all the deniers started whining and desperately wanting to RTV lol

The odd case of the Iron Bomber and it having a massive hitbox in comparison to normal grenades (not even just because it covers the whole grenade, it physically sticks out it's hitbox a good few inches beyond the visible model) There's more, but I'll cut my comment here; Buggy unbalanced weapons is very much not a stretch.

They also don't revert changes even if, literally, the ENTIRE playerbase is mad at them for it. Along with DBD, Warframe has been like this for the past few years. The worst part, my good man, is that Valve didn't listen. They tried to pull this same crap AGAIN with Aar's Coal Pit map. They gave Aar 10 day's notice after telling him his map was going to be put in, and the map was in a wretched state. Only after Aar busted his butt and called upon some of the best and brightest in the workshop community did Coal Pit go from what would've been the biggest disappointment in Smissmass 2022 to what has been regarded as the best (or one of the best) maps released that year. Goddamnit, Valve. All of this is documented on Aar's channel, so I highly recommend you watch that.
Its been 13 years. I've been playing for 7. Valve straight up told us if they stop supporting TF2 they wouldn't tell us. Game's artstyle died like 5 years ago. The code is literal spaghetti that most devs don't even want to begin to try and understand. Yet we have a player base that refuses to let this geezer lie down and die. Its inspiring, but ultimately puts a lot of strain on the already tired and limited devs the game still even has with the kind of standards they're held to. I'm not condoning this level of incompetence but I ultimately think we're expecting too much of a 13 year old game with a single digit dev team. At some point you gotta know when to let go.
The problem is, this game is one of the longest running games in history, do you really think the community would let go of a game that has been going on for this long, especially after the dev team promised we would be getting another major update practically 5 years ago?
@@Youhadabadday2021 unfortunately no they won't let go even though they should. Other video games exist, move on, do something else, also, they promised nothing. Valve does not care, and they'll continue to not care because they put in 0 effort and idiots throw money at their outdated, neglected, games made in their outdated, neglected game engine, with its outdated, dysfunctional, and neglected anti cheat. Please stop throwing your time and money at a company that doesn't care about its consumers anymore, it's genuinely upsetting to watch.
i actually kinda like this map. the type of the "so bad, it's kinda good" and the funny shenanigans i like seeing a bunch of snipers just standing there like some family of ducks in a pond and the occasional swarm of rocket jumping soldiers or a demoman clipping through the floor. and also the fact that the map is very wide open. too bad i found a lot of bugs and issues
I’ve never been so passionately angry about a tf2 map in my entire life. I even made a gmod poster just to spite this map because I was so offended that this got into the game in its current state
It took me a while to realize Wutville is a Whoville reference. It makes a lot more sense after that connection. It's still pretty wacky though. Very trademap-esque in this form. The other versions of the map really are better suited for official release. It lacks polish in its current form and is just too janky atm. The open spaces are also pretty crazy. It is a sniper and jumper's paradise. If you can rocket jump, sticky jump, jetpack around, or snipe...this is YOUR map.....everyone else is a bit screwed though... ALL this being said...the harassment of the person who originally made this and all is totally not ok. Valve bungled this, sure. Lodge your complaints with them. As much as ragging on the creator's choices is a popular move, it does seem they were put in a winless situation with something they had no interest in being involved with in the first place. Should they have declined Valve's offer to include the map? I mean, probably. I can't blame them for giving it a go though. I mean, hell, if someone wants to include my map in their game declining will not be my first instinct. At this end of the day, this is Valve's fault and Valve's problem. At any rate, the map goes away in a month, so I don't think either party will _really_ care about it enough to properly fix the situation anyways. We're prob just stuck with this janky map held together by tinsel and wrapping paper...
Some people said this update is like a godsend and they're happy with it. I mean yeah the news taunts and news maps are quite nice, but there are quite a lot of problems behind it. Valve is just doesn't care anymore. Those sight lines, might as well add a room where only snipers can enter and shoot from it and call it a balanced map xD Yeah... Pretty sure no one in Valve likes to play TF2 anymore, so nope definitely didn't play test it themselves. Their cash cows are CSGO and Dota, those take their number one priorities
I personally really like the visuals, remining me of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and, yea, the sightlines and spawn areas are awful, but if I had fun playing it (which I did) I am ok with it. I am not a huge tech guy, so the frames don't bother me.
I agree, this map, with fixed spawn and stuff could be his own thing The one i don't really agree is people complaining the sightlines for snipers, there are plenty of payload maps with big sightlines
Ways in which they could improve this map: 1. make more of it metal or wood/other realistic textures (especially the corner parts of the buildings which are the same texture as the walls) and make the entire map an industrial hellhole but with skeletons of elf children, windows into factory rooms that show conveyer belts with presents, make it the scary subversion of expectation that St. Nick had as well. Maybe even get rid off all the Christmas stuff and just make it like a sweatshop from hell, almost like a gulag. 2. Add some trucks, crates etc to clog up the sightlines 3. Make the final spawn point much bigger, add an exit up at the top of the pit and link the two spawn rooms. The generator exit 4. Less props, more actual map 5. Have the spawn rooms at the entrance to the sweatshop, maybe where the trucks coming in get checked? not just some random rooms that aren't even connected or make remote sense. 6. Make every spawn room unique, and do what gorge did with the unreachable spawn room if you have to. I actually really like a lot of the map's layout and I love how it feels really big, quite similar to upward in my opinion, It just needs a consistent and dark aesthetic with some changes made, but once that happens it could easily become one of my favourite maps due to the creativity involved.
It’s easily one of the most fun maps to play because the chat is almost always in agreement that it blows. I love how united the community is on shitting on this map
I played Tf2 recently for the smissmas event. And Whutville was one of the maps I played on. I walked out of Blue spawn, took one look at the area and asked “how did this get accepted? The Sniper sightlines are rediculous!?”
This was something that iiboharz (hey look, she has a cameo at 2:40) and I were talking about, and having a laugh about. Before smissmas was officially released I downloaded the TF2Maps version and we took a while talking about this map. Turns out the developer, Thirteen, is a total ass. They complained constantly to TF2maps about how their map didn't get any playtesting, like you said. However, they NEVER submitted it for the TF2Maps playtesting server, which is what you need to do if you want to get criticism from TF2Maps. The quality of the map is absolutely Thirteen's fault, but it's inclusion is Valve's. I hope Creators.tf has a really good Smissmas event this year, as I think it would offset this a little bit.
Did reply to this for the last tf2m user (and in the discord), so I'll just use the abbreviated version: I was absolutely aware he didn't ever submit the map for testing, but the explanation I had for it got rather "drama heavy" and just ended up sounding like I was harassing him myself. Removed a lot of it and forgot to throw that back in, but told people to read it for themselves instead. That post from you in the thread was absolutely going to be highlighted. The messaging I was getting was "stop blaming everything on him and harassing him", so I left it for people to make their own conclusions.
@@Jakapoa Totally fair. You and them are very right to not inspire harassment towards thirteen, I just wanted to voice this as an aside, and give more context, because how you phrase him "not receiving playtesting" could be interpreted as TF2M's fault.
Imagine making a map in hammer, and discontinuing it halfway through, and never look at it again. Then, next decade, your map is approved, and you get a message from Valve, to complete the map in a few days. And you, agree. A map you completely forgot about, when you were completely inexperienced with hammer, and are clueless to what you’re doing. And once it’s released, and you only fixed a tiny percent of the problems, and you get harassed for making a shitty map, you had no idea existed.
I've played Hydro exactly once a few years ago. It wasn't, like, trade server horrible, but I honestly cannot remember my play experience on it very well.
You could fix the sightlines with things like signs or festive light chains between buildings. its common in a winter scenario or winter market kind of deal and you could put anything on those signs or make the festive lights look kind of sinister to fight the evil santa shop theme. So yea I think that will improve the sightline issue by simply putting things in between the buildings so you can't just see the entire thing Edit: Some of the sightlines will still be there though considering not all of them are across uneven ground but I feel like it would still help
It's ok to do community update. It's ok to collaborate with the community to make your game better. But please, we're talking about developers who don't even play the game at this point, c'mon.

I think Thirteen would be a fool to say "no." But perhaps he could have negotiated with Valve, and asked them to add it next year. That way he would have time to play-test it properly and polish the textures.

The other versions of the map really are better suited for official release. It lacks polish in its current form and is just too janky atm. The open spaces are also pretty crazy. It is a sniper and jumper's paradise. If you can rocket jump, sticky jump, jetpack around, or snipe...this is YOUR map.....everyone else is a bit screwed though...
ALL this being said...the harassment of the person who originally made this and all is totally not ok. Valve bungled this, sure. Lodge your complaints with them. Should they have declined Valve's offer to include the map? I mean, probably. I can't blame them for giving it a go though. I mean, hell, if someone wants to include my map in their game declining will not be my first instinct. At this end of the day, this is Valve's fault and Valve's problem.

Honestly glad to know that other people think this map is shit, I thought I was just salty.
I personally really like the visuals, remining me of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and, yea, the sightlines and spawn areas are awful, but if I had fun playing it (which I did) I am ok with it. I am not a huge tech guy, so the frames don't bother me.
I agree, this map, with fixed spawn and stuff could be his own thing
The one i don't really agree is people complaining the sightlines for snipers, there are plenty of payload maps with big sightlines
"I had fun with this thing, so this thing must be ok!"
this mentality is why we have the same garbage games copy pasted with a 2020 on it
I actually like the base design of wutville there inst any really tough chokes and the flank routes are really fun to use
Ways in which they could improve this map:
1. make more of it metal or wood/other realistic textures (especially the corner parts of the buildings which are the same texture as the walls) and make the entire map an industrial hellhole but with skeletons of elf children, windows into factory rooms that show conveyer belts with presents, make it the scary subversion of expectation that St. Nick had as well. Maybe even get rid off all the Christmas stuff and just make it like a sweatshop from hell, almost like a gulag.
2. Add some trucks, crates etc to clog up the sightlines
3. Make the final spawn point much bigger, add an exit up at the top of the pit and link the two spawn rooms. The generator exit
4. Less props, more actual map
Would love to see more videos like these, hope you carry on getting the high views! Good luck
Did reply to this for the last tf2m user (and in the discord), so I'll just use the abbreviated version:
I was absolutely aware he didn't ever submit the map for testing, but the explanation I had for it got rather "drama heavy" and just ended up sounding like I was harassing him myself.
This just randomly showed up in my recommended, but the use of Iji Music in the background earned ya a sub.
This map is like Hydro, except it was made with drugs.
Hydro is like all class unfriendly, not a single class works well in the map.
So yea I think that will improve the sightline issue by simply putting things in between the buildings so you can't just see the entire thing
Edit: Some of the sightlines will still be there though considering not all of them are across uneven ground but I feel like it would still help
It's ok to do community update.
It's ok to collaborate with the community to make your game better.
But please, we're talking about developers who don't even play the game at this point, c'mon.
The community finally has something to discuss.
bot crisis, economy crashes, no updates... nah we dont talk much
Someone just needs to heckin' finish cactus canyon. That map-in-development was my fuckin' jam, dude. I loved the whole "push the cart in front of the train" mechanic on the last map of the set.
Isn't that the same mechanic they used in Banana Bay?
