That final tip, helping your fellow spy, is something me and my buddies do all the time and on purpose. We call it a Spy Sandwich, or "Sandwiching." For decent spies, it's nearly always effective on lone targets.
As a heavy main, it’s always a weird mix of nice and horrifying to see a video about spy be so well put together. Guess that’s why I run tomislav, so much easier to hear the sneaky Frenchman without all that rattling.
As an experienced Heavy main, I can confirm we get backstabbed so often we end up subconsciously learning how to think like both spy and sniper. We get hit with sudden, overwhelming premonitions when we're about to be stabbed or shot just by reading the game. People like to say Heavy has a low skill-ceiling, but he MORE then makes up for it with his ridiculously high game-sense ceiling.
Sometimes a heavy turns around at the most inconvenient time and kills me, and when that happens I’m not even mad, since that was a display of skill by the heavy. He read my mind before knowing I even exist and I can respect that. I can tell they’re a heavy main. But I’ve also learned how to counter these guys. Basically, when you have the most perfect opportunity to backstab them, you don’t take it, you wait for them to spy check, and when they turn back around again you have a window of about 2 seconds where you can stab them. You just need to prepare for that tiny window and be generally unpredictable.

hehe time to kill the whole enemy team *medic turns 0.1 degrees as i stab him, removing my disguise and getting me obliterated by the 922 level 3 sentries* *i have been dominated by the engineer*
There's another reason it's called a butterknife to hit someone like that: Spy's knife is called a ButterFLY knife, take away the fly and it's just a butterknife. It's almost like a play on words, though I doubt it was intended to be whenever the terminology was invented.
Personally I always thought it's because the horizontal slash resulting from a normal spy melee attack (like a failstab) kind of ressembles extending butter over a slice of bread or something to that effect.

You dont. Just pray the enemy is stupid or running out of ammo so they cant afford to spy check. I guess itll work in combat if you dont bumb into anyone
That's just the design of spy, if people are cautious and coordinated spy gameplay is very difficult. If a pyro is doing nothing but spraying every half-inch of walkable ground with fire every half-second, if you get caught and focused down you have no option but to either be perfect at escaping, or perfect at killing, or just die. I don't think you'll find a pyro with that mindset anytime soon (maybe me if you find me in casual, or pyros in HL) but spychecking is the main counter to spy, there's no real avoiding it.

I've been playing alot of spy recently, and you covered alot, from the basics to the more meta game stuff where you are in people's heads. I have a few thousand hours and spy is somewhere in the middle in terms of hours played. I will say that, although matadoring and corner stabbing is second nature, and there are some great maps for dropstabbing, I still am not good at stair stabbing and have never hit a surfstab! So there's more stabbing to be had.. I also think that spy hones my game sense and joking abilities better than any other class. Happy stabbing, and great video :)
You know, as a person who doesn't play spy (I mean that, I have no idea how) I want to say that this has definitely helped me understand how spy players do what they do, and how I should play around that.
Excellent! The exceeding amount of work absolutely shows and it is very, very greatly appretiated. It always makes my day when I watch a video of such great quality with so much effort put into it. Were there any severe difficulties you faced during production?
I should probably add that when hiding in a checked corner don't hide in the first corner they check. Good players will double back and check the first corner in case you moved
17:21 I love being the second spy in that scenario so much because I know how it feels to be the guy who found the first spy The feeling of being backstabbed when you are staring right at the only enemy spy you THOUGHT was there is so heartbreaking and I live for it
3:17 That's weird, seeing a reference to a bad, german porn in the TF2 chat of a content creator that does englich-voiced content...strange times indeed. Aside from that, your narrations are always nice to listen to, so count me entertained.
One of the biggest things that stopped me from properly playing spy was that I felt like I wasn't using the knife well. I'll give it a try using the new information. Thanks for the pointers and great video!
A friend who I've recently gotten into TF2 is an up and coming spy main. I recommended your videos to him, and I think it's helped him gain some game sense
Cowers the basics pretty well, you could also have cowered that playermodels are delayed and not accurate depictions of hitboxes which usually is the reason for "failstabs" and "facestabs". Since everything you see is clientside and the hit registration is serverside. The more you play spy the more your intuition starts to get the feel of everything from the serverside perspective which makes you land stabs that look facestabby and separates good spies from beginner/mediocre spies :)
Should totally cover the rabbit hole of alternate trickstabs: stabs theorized and created solely due to people becoming too accustomed to the common stabs we have. The counter corner stab comes to mind.
I often have problems playing spy mostly due to the notorious hitreg and the class' own survivability rate after securing a kill or two. For me, spy is one of the least played classes and it's easier to deal with one rather than being one. This video gives another perspective on how it works, perhaps I'll give it another spin later. Great vid, lad.
this video is amazingly well made! as much as spy gets on my nerves I still learnt so much and on top of that the video was super entertaining which I feel a lot of content creators forget when making tutorials and stuff like this. definitely the best tf guide I’ve seen full stop
One of my favorite techniques I like to use is to desquise as a scout and position myself right outside of the main battle or just any large battle and spam left and right. This does two very important things. It makes it harder to tell the speed difference between a spy and a scout AND It tricks the enemy into thinking your a scout looking for an opening to go in for a powerful pick. These two working together should fool the enemy causing them to look at your team thinking to avoid incoming damage "their scout" might be trying to avoid while waiting for an opening meaning that they are looking away from you allowing you to get a stab.
Ive been a medic main since day one, but ive wanted to learn spy. If this channel has taught me anything, be unpredictable. Which is why i use the dead ringer with yer. Great series!
now this is the video I was looking for. I finally got motivated on playing spy after 12 hours of pyro. I really want to explore all of the gameplay this game offers and using spy was like the most terrifying since it's well known for being the most difficult class. Such a great video explaning everything from this class!!
I can't even say how much I love the spy theme mixed with the tron legacy theme. It's one of the few times I've looked through a sizeable portion of the comment section and haven't seen anyone compliment this specific mix, so I just wanted to say that you did an insanely well job with it
Correction on the hitbox segment, melee hitreg is based on collision boxes so all classes (share the same collision box shape and size) are equal in terms of how stabbable they are, heavy is technically easiest like you said though but only because of movespeed.
By far my most recent memory of helping another teammate spy was when I was watching an enemy engineer set up a dispenser and teleporter while in cloak and saw the other spy approaching. As soon as I saw the other spy I immediately uncloaked in front of the engineer as a means to distract him while the other spy went in for the kill. However instead of the other spy backstabbing him it just devolved into us both unceremoniously gunning the helpless engineer down and then knocking off his buildings. Might not have been that efficient but it sure felt like a nice moment.
As someone who mains engineer, medic, and heavy, a lot of the time when a spy or sniper is about to kill me, I get a gut feeling and do something like spin around, or duck behind a corner. Of course, it doesn't always work, but it works enough.

You know, as a person who doesn't play spy (I mean that, I have no idea how) I want to say that this has definitely helped me understand how spy players do what they do, and how I should play around that.
A video this funny, informative, and well edited is rarer than a Saharan Spy nowadays.
Exactly 2 years later this video is still a masterpiece
Nice work very enjoyable video
0:35 if everything is made by you, then you are quite literally a god gamer
17:21 I love being the second spy in that scenario so much because I know how it feels to be the guy who found the first spy
The feeling of being backstabbed when you are staring right at the only enemy spy you THOUGHT was there is so heartbreaking and I live for it
We have been tricked, we have been backstabbed, and quite possibly, BAMBOOZLED
Second spy, is the worst idea ever.
This video reminds me of the "How it feels to play" series by LazyPurple. Great work, subscribed!
Me a Pyro main watching this video
"Know your enemy and know yourself"
-Sun Tzu
the best part of spy is the awkward stares you get when you failstab
3:12 "because I know there's a spy and I need to stay vigilante" is what I would say if I were that soldier turning around then
It’s always nice to see ur videos every once in a while, there’s always a unique style to ur edits and asmr-esque voice
As a pyro main, I can confirm that the revolver is an amazing deterrent.
Cringe pyro
I agree, as a Pyro and Medic main
as a spy main i approve of 100% of this video, nice job
As someone who isn't a spy I can easily explain why we randomly turn around
It's to not get stabbed by you sneaky motherfu-
As a pyro main this video is very informative and it'll make it easier to torment any enemy spies. Thanks!
Wait is there music from Tron in your intro
YES DAFT PUNK MUSIC IS GOD
@@aadishankar575 Hell yeah
That intro with TRON : Legacy's melody was a train of nostalgia, nice detail even if it has nothing to do with TF2
3:17 That's weird, seeing a reference to a bad, german porn in the TF2 chat of a content creator that does englich-voiced content...strange times indeed.
Aside from that, your narrations are always nice to listen to, so count me entertained.
I’ve got to be honest this is actually helping me
First
god damn it
Tron music in the beginning, immediately subbed
This is maybe the detailed and most well explained advice ive seen for spy so far
This has helped me out immensely
Best spy video that i ever watched...makes me want to play spy more!! So many tricks unraveled in such exquisite ways!
i decided to rewatch this video, the amount of quality and polish that this video has is astounding, i also really enjoyed the soundtrack, nice job.
Literally every time i could’ve backstabbed the move at I’m not joking the millisecond click
some of the most informative and useful videos from this guy. some of the most quality as well
To the point, clear as day, a very nice voice and even humour. Very well done.
That cover for Aerodynamic sounds pretty good, I'd like to hear it out of the background.
..Also this taught me a fat load about how to knife good.
Thank you, I will be uploading all my self-made music from this video in about a week :)
One of the biggest things that stopped me from properly playing spy was that I felt like I wasn't using the knife well. I'll give it a try using the new information. Thanks for the pointers and great video!
you are absolutely right, the dopamine surge when doing a backstap is amazing, good video:)
As someone who's been trying to get into playing spy more this is going to help me so much thank you
I subscribed. Absolutely fantastic content, it's a crime that you don't have more subs.
The song at the start gave me so much nostalgia to tron legacy
This was very useful to me as i'm a new player to tf2 and a spy main. Appreciate it!
I love the briefcase opening up outro, great work on the video man :)
Should totally cover the rabbit hole of alternate trickstabs: stabs theorized and created solely due to people becoming too accustomed to the common stabs we have. The counter corner stab comes to mind.
Ive been waiting for so long for spytalk
I often have problems playing spy mostly due to the notorious hitreg and the class' own survivability rate after securing a kill or two. For me, spy is one of the least played classes and it's easier to deal with one rather than being one.
This video gives another perspective on how it works, perhaps I'll give it another spin later. Great vid, lad.
this video is amazingly well made! as much as spy gets on my nerves I still learnt so much and on top of that the video was super entertaining which I feel a lot of content creators forget when making tutorials and stuff like this. definitely the best tf guide I’ve seen full stop
As soon as you started talking about using knockback for stairstabs, my WHOLE COMPUTER BLUE SCREENED.
Clearly spy is the strongest class.
7:17 best description of matador. Thank you
now this is the video I was looking for. I finally got motivated on playing spy after 12 hours of pyro. I really want to explore all of the gameplay this game offers and using spy was like the most terrifying since it's well known for being the most difficult class. Such a great video explaning everything from this class!!
I love the remix of the tron legacy "welcome to the grid" track. Glad someone else is a fan of that movie.
And tunnel vision
