  • Today’s video takes us on an Omega Seamaster collecting odyssey-the highs, the lows, and why it was my first ever luxury watch. Included in this journey is an unboxing of a timepiece from the brand’s greatest era-a watch that could possibly be my last Seamaster ever. I also share what I consider to be the sweet spot in the Seamaster range, what to look out for, what to avoid, and why I prefer vintage Seamasters to more contemporary offerings.

A massive burst of wonderful nostalgia for me because I was given my first s/s Omega Seamaster for my 21st birthday in 1958, the same year that your Seamaster was made. I destroyed it when I slid down the road under my new 1956 Triumph Tiger 100, which was theoretically slower than the T120 Bonneville, but in the real world the only bike on the road that could beat me on the twisty roads on the eastern outskirts of Melbourne, when their was no Speed Limit was the BSA Gold Star clubman, but that was built for track racing and nothing could beat me in suburban traffic including the Victorian Police.
But that's Yesterday's Fashion, today my daily wear watch, with my business suits, is a very plain solid gold Omega Seamaster. I save my collection of Sports and Diver watches for the weekend.
Thanks for taking me back to the happiest years of my life. Phil.

I sort of like to think of Rolex and Omega like this: Rolex is like a 15 year old Ferrari. Very nice and respectable, carries a certain tone as well (good or bad you decide), classic but doesn't represent much "new".
Omega is like a brand new Audi. Not too flashy, may not turn a lot of heads but has all the bells and whistles and is perfect in every sense of the word.

Hi TGV I really enjoyed your video since thanx to your videos I have such love affair with watches. I have an omega seamaster 1964 model, owned by my mother's uncle, fully restored from Omega customer service after resting for 22 years in a cabinet... I was totally ignorant about watches but now I'm really glad it shines on my wrist after being full serviced in Biel. But there's something else: I did the same with my father's Geneve automatic, that was not functioning after falling into the water of lake of Como in 90's , during an excursion in kayak. My father gave up since repair was too expensive and didn't use it anymore since that time. He passed in 2016 and now I got his watch fully restored on my wrist after full service, that tooked several months. Thanx TGV for transmitting your passion to me! Got my wallet empty But i've never been so happy!

Mine has been to 120 feet in Grand Cayman. It is pretty, but still a very capable tool watch. I would love to have the matching chronograph, but fear it is now out of my price range. Enjoy your new baby in good health! If my wrists weren’t the same size as yours, I would have bought a Ploprof during my active diving period.

TGV remebering his Seamasters reminds me of James May talking about every car Jezza ever owned on his birthday episode of the Grand Tour lol
Also, I just took a gamble on a STEAL of a Movado Datron HS360 that I'm currently awaiting in the mail. A little terrified, but more excited! I had to go for it though so we'll see! Great stuff as always!

Your very right about the Omega, I personally think that Omega has been upping their game and the newer ones are very well made. My aqua terra 8500 is a absolutely solid reliable watch.

I just got a Luch Ultra Slim. It took 2 months from the Ukraine and is 10au gold and a vintage tv Square ricoh N31. I like Bulovas and Gruens, quite affordable vintage. You look so happy I say it's money well spent. Besides '58 was a good year. I was born then.

I’ve got my eye on the Seamaster at the moment 🤞🏼 it should be joining my collection very soon. Another great video TGV, love the fact it’s not all about new watches but vintage too. PS Goldeneye was a great game on the N64, spent many an hour on that in my youth.

The shots of the movement flashed by but it looked like your watch has the 501 movement. If I recall, this movement was first produced in c. 1955/56 with a 360 degree rotor that was piggybacked. Beautiful watch.

I love to own the chronograph planet ocean with the orange accents. I love that watch. The fact that they put the hour and minute counters on the same subdial is really clever.

I love my Seamaster, I own a first gen 42mm Planet Ocean 2500 matte black dial/ black bezel with white tri arabic numerals and it just has such classic Omega diver DNA but yet still modern and much more of an understated tool watch then the newer iterations, this model in my opinion is still the best looking PO and one of the best looking Omega divers, yes I know I'm biased but I'll never get tired of it's timeless looks.

I tune in not just for the horology lessons (the best available, by the way) but for the British expressions. I had to look up "cream crackered" and you used it perfectly in context to the worn-out bracelet. Consider me edified! And that Seamaster is the bee's knees.

I have two beautiful vintage omega. My Geneve I got as a graduation gift from my mother, from the 60’s I believe without much signs of wear. The other one I found wit h my initials engraved on the back from 1953. It’s a stunning watch with lovely patina, unsure of which model it is since it only is called Omega Automatic, it has the same pie form dial as the one you showed here, with the second hand at 6 o clock. I absolutely love them to bits

Not sure if you have reviewed it yet but you should take a look at the Seamaster 300 Master Co-Axial. Amazing watch for the price, vintage styling, 15,000 Gauss protection, ceramic bezel, in-house movement, 41mm, 300m water resist. One of the best watches you can buy for the money in my opinion.

    Hi TGV
Yes, the hunting is surely half the fun of the hobby. Even when being on a lower budget it just adds another dimension to it all. You start looking at cheaper/older pieces - could be the kind of watches you were looking for as a rookie, but now with a bulk of added experience. You get wiser on what is worth looking for and what is timeless. There’s no end to this hobby - fortunately😆
The classic Seamasters are surely stunning, from when Omega was a slightly expensive watch company, all though still financially within the reach of ordinary people. And surely a company that made high quality products. In my family they didn’t wear Rolex’s, Jeager LeCoutres, Cartier ‘s and so on. But you could wish for a nice Omega for your 40’th birthday, your 25 year anniversary or the like. A watch to rely on for the rest of your life. And they were...
Still remember my Grandads Seamaster from the latter half of the 50’s. Gold capped like this one of yours, but with the “vaffel” dail. I have no idea what happened to that beautiful watch but I’m still hunting one for myself. They are out there, it’s just a matter of finding the perfect one.
    Keep up the good work👍

  • @benjaminbarrera214

Wow, you got a great deal on a wonderful watch. Pie pan with cross hairs, that's a 50s watch for sure, I am glad you appreciate the patina and I hope you enjoy it.
I do have to say there's nothing wrong with the bumper automatics! I have one from 1947 and it's such a great watch, I let people shake it around so they can feel the bumper weight winding the watch. Many other companies made bumpers, the design allows the watch to be slightly thinner but mainly they did it to avoid the Rolex patent for the 'perpetual' rotor. The patent expired in 1948 and the bumpers were gone within a few years.

Greetings TGV always a good time indeed! From what I'm learning, omega has always shown the innovation they can do more than following the hype of what's hot. I think this is consistent with them today. You're new omega is proper what a find; I like the gold capped design.🎯

I always learn so much here. i did not in fact know that the Constellations were of a higher "level" than the Seamasters from that period, so thanks for that. I have a question. I have wondered about buying from Japan. What about the import duties? is it hit or miss? Love your find. a real win at that price!

Lovely watch, great purchase. I dont have anything from the 50's but you've inspired me to wear my seamaster ref 166.065 today.. gold capped.... 70's marmite watch. I also have a seamaster ref 145.007 chronostop... a better daily watch.I love this as it was the 1st luxury brand I managed to save up and buy.
As for old vs new? It is a personal choice and I like both... just not all models.
I've heard some say that omega made too many variants and this devalued the brand vs Rolex... I just think they were trying to give customers choice that matches their individuality.
    Once again TGV, thank you.

I bought both my vintage Omega Seamaster & my Speedie through eBay in Japan. More than happy with both quality, value & promptness of delivery. Admittedly living in Australia had its advantages in these 2 separate purchases, relating to quick delivery, but also their thoroughness in packaging & care. These will definitely not be my last Omega purchases, vintage or otherwise from Japan!👍🏼

TGV, as much as you might not like the ‘70s Seamasters, they can be had for very cheap. The later movements were improved, and high-beat, thinness and hacking are nice added features over the previous generation.

Speaking about video games TGV, you should wear your Seiko while playing Ghost of Tsushima. I can't help but think how Japanese history has influence the Grand Seiko design and that game is a good look into the mongol invasion of Japan, although fictional. Very sure you will love it seeing you are a fan of the Samurai genre.
Other than that, kudos to sharing about the history of Omega. I am always learning more about the history of wristwatches with your videos! Have a good day and stay safe.

I feel very fortunate to own both a cal. 561 Constellation from the 60's and the 2018 Seamaster Diver 300m. Omega is like the Forest Gump of the Swiss watch industry in the 20th century; it's been involved with everything.
