      Any "watch enthusiast" who shits on a G-Shock is a poser, plain and simple. I turned 30 earlier this year, and my family gifted me a new Tudor Black Bay. It will be my heirloom, if I ever start a family of my own. I'm currently wearing a $400 G-shock as I type this, GWM-B5000, that I fell in love with after TGV at The Urban Gentry did a review on it. My next purchase is going to be the new Timex Navi XL automatic, when they get back in stock. I'd love a Rolex Submariner, if i could afford it. But I will never sneer a $300 watch from a reputable manufacturer, like say Orient.

    I appreciated the fact he called Seiko a Lexus instead of a Toyota. Well done. Seiko has done so well for itself to position itself upmarket, it'll be rude just calling an entry level brand. • @SaintKines
      @SaintKines 2 года назад +11

      @@addiegraves3 sometimes you just get unlucky and end up working with antisocial or clicky coworkers. The good news is getting too close with coworkers is risky and can lead to good or bad things. On top of that you may just be a good listener and many people are not. They just want to do all the talking and people that are willing to listen get taken advantage of. Being a good listener is a double edged sword because though it is appreciated by some and extremely helpful, it leads to being used as an emotional garbage can.
      I just think the way this guy gets Joe to go from "whatever" to watch guy in a matter of minutes is great. Another awesome example of that is the very first episode that Steven Rinella came on. Steven was so good at explaining his position and advocating for hunting that he got me and Joe both (and I imagine others) at the same time to go from thinking hunting was just kind of unnecessary and maybe immoral at this point to hunting our own first deer within that year. Steven wasn't trying to force his views or convert anyone, he was simply talking passionately about the thing he loved most and defending it against Joe being kind of silly and challenging a little bit. Joe did a complete 180 and is now one hell of a bow hunter himself. It's also just a really great Rogan podcast episode. Steven and Joe are good friends and Steven has been on many times at this point but that was the beginning. Steven also has what I consider the only good hunting show which is on Netflix now called Meateater.

    That last "You gotta get buzzed in!" "OH GAWD!" killed me! lol
    As a handyman I once did work for the MAERSK corporation. I did odd jobs at their main offices in denmark. At one point the secretary for the top CEO asked me to take a watch to the watchstore for repairs. I was allso given two pens that needed to be serviced. Expensive items.
    Anyways, I made my way down to the fancy store in the expensive part of midtown and tried walking through the door but found it locked. Took me a while t relize there was a bell... Rang it... nothing happened. Rang it again... and then someone replied: what do you want' we don't selll to walkins and this is an expensive store.
    I was like WTF?! buut managed just to say I was there to get a watch and some ink pens serviced...
    She did't believe me and started questioning me about it.
    Ultimately she let me inside, through what turned out to be like an airllock in space. close the door behind you before you can open the next. When I got in it was like being met by a wall of employees asking me where I got the stuff and basicly accusing me of stealing them...
    I was like firstly I don't steal. secondly I am here to pay for them being fixed, not to sell stolen crap. Thirdly I have all reciepts from the owner, his goldcard, membership numbers and whatever else you might need, so cut your fucking crap and get working on it!
    As soon as they realized what was actually going on they turned into superfriendly people doing everything they could to make it better...
    I just had a helluva lot of fun being a longhaired metal dude who was actually able to put them in their place after they so obviously treated me as a dirty crook based on my looks... allthough my "elite powers" were only on lend from my employer, It was a lovely feeling seeing them scuffle!

Matt nailed it when he said it's one of the most unique and advanced mechanisms in a watch today. True that. And hard to appreciate fully without understanding how quartz and automatic mechanical movements actually work, or without knowing how astonishingly clever and persistent Yoshikazu Akahane was in bringing the movement to market after 600 prototypes over 28 years.

Taking time off work is a luxury; indoor plumbing, electricity and household appliances are all luxuries. That roof over your head is also a luxury. Condemning "luxury in general" is to misunderstand the entire mission of the common man and the broader marketplace: to minimize labor and maximize leisure, a "luxury" achieved through the optimization of production. www.paradocracy.com/2018/12/the-economics-of-vintage-luxury.html

    Watches are like paintings in a way. They're not actually gonna physically do much more than a regular watch, its just that everything that goes into it is meant to be appreciated by the craftsmen/artists/connoisseurs. The same cycle creates a great many tasteless grandiose examples, but sometimes amazing pieces of art are also created.

      Funny thing...I bought a Casio recently...not a G-Shock...just an inexpensive WR 100M. Nice looking watch that I won't be sad if something happens to it. I work nights and wanted the watch for work. I just assumed that it would have a light. It doesn't. I was like WTF? And the hands barely glow. I mean I can hold it under a crazy bright light for 10 minutes and then take it into complete darkness and barely see the hands. It's basically worthless to me at this point for a work watch. So yeah...that light (or well illuminated hands) is definitely something many people take for granted on a watch...at least a utilitarian watch. Now if I'm spending $5k or $10k or even more on a watch...does it have a light will probably be way at the bottom of the list of things I'd look for in that watch. Of course I'll never be in a position to buy a watch like that. I did splurge however and ordered my first G-Shock and it was less than $300 and pained me a little to spend that on a watch. New cars get better mileage, new watches have longer power reserve.
      New sports car get faster, new watches get more accurate.
      Cars get new functions (thinking of gps, auto pilot etc), watches get new functions as well like moon phase, leap years (even though that might have been around for a while I don't know actually), automated time zone changes etc
      New cars get lighter, new watches get lighter. (A bit of a stretch but you get the point)

      @@Nswix jewelry is not an investment, the markup is retarded compared to the gold and diamonds contained in the jewelry. That 18,000,000 will never be able to be re liquidated because no one will ever buy it from him and if they did they would pay less than 1,000,000, and if he melted the gold down and sold the diamonds he would not be able to recover a fraction of that 18,000,000. Also art is actually usually a scam, usually rich people buy a $500 piece of artwork and they will claim it’s worth 50 million and donate it to their own charity, this way they can write off 50 million in donations to avoid paying taxes, their are other similar ways that they do these types of scams with art but yeah besides a few pieces of art none of it is worth anything and it literally is a scam for tax reasons. I’m talking there are maybe 100 pieces of art that actually are worth a lot of money and the rest are scams.

    Both sides had valid points. Yes it’s true someone with an expensive watch could be just owning it to show off and feel it makes them superior. It’s also true someone could love and appreciate having something of such precision and craftsmanship and feel good owning something of such high quality knowing it will last.
    To Rogan’s credit once he learned more he was willing to open his mind up and appreciate why someone would love owning these watches. Also credit to the other gentleman for not being defensive but accepting that it was okay for someone else to not understand him yet and took the time to explain his views.

      The thing is, just because it's automatic and swiss made, doesn't mean it's good.
      But I totally agree with you on the expensive watch bullshit -- i really don't understand why people pay 10 to 20 grand for a watch.
      I know this guy has a Grand Seiko, but pretty much any Seiko is a good buy, if you want a bomb proof quality watch that will last for years (easily 30yrs+), then go for a Seiko SKX007, can get one second hand for between $150 - $200.
      Seiko have Japanese movement instead of Swiss movement, but don't be a Swiss watch snob, Japanese movements are awesome and Seiko make some of the best quality watches on the market.

    • @SaintKines
      @SaintKines 6 лет назад

      crzyhorse88 You're right. I didn't mean to make it sound like Swiss made means it's great. Swiss made means that it meets a certain level of quality but like you said, there are other countries that make good watches. Japan and Germany have some great watch companies. I also agree that Seiko is about the best bang for your buck out there. I just started wearing watches again recently and I have my eye on an Orient which is either owned by Seiko or Citizen. There's a couple Seikos I like too. I'm just using that swiss pilot I bought as an example. Swiss made ETA movements are pretty solid and if you can get one you like for less than 200 I say go for it. It will almost always be better than buying something like a Gucci watch or some shit.

    • @SaintKines
      @SaintKines 6 лет назад +7

      crzyhorse88 also, there's nothing wrong with a good quartz watch. I just mean that quartz is much cheaper to make than mechanical so if you're paying even 300 or more for a quartz watch made by some designer company you're almost guaranteed getting ripped off. You don't get more accurate than quartz.

    Let the following sink in:
    Some high end watches have a perpetual calendar. This means that unlike in cheaper automatic watches, which just count days to 31 each month and need to be set to the correct date every second month, these calendars are right ALWAYS. This doesn't only mean to switch between 30 and 31 days every other month - you need to account for 28 days in february as well. And then for leap years. A leap year happens once every four years which means that there is one tiny gear in there that turns only ONCE EVERY FOUR YEARS.
    Watches are incredible.
    Edit: Oh, I just got to the part where he talks about this.

    • @wampaku2

      I've seen ads on Instagram and Facebook advertise HYT watches (HYT 1, HYT 3) for $49.99, and 99% of the comments on there are always, "wow that's nice! How do I order?" not realizing that it's a total scam. When I report the ads for being a scam the feedback I always get is: "Thanks for your feedback. We reviewed the ad and it doesn't violate any of our policies." So scam ads on Insta, and Facebook are kosher I guess.

If you want flash and the attention of other people on the street, you can get a recognizable Rolex, or AP Royal Oak, or something with gold and jewels. The HYT is for people who want something for niche watch lovers only, and will rank hiiiiigh above a Rolex everyone has.

It's polarizing from the use of the electronic "brake" but it's still (by far) mostly a mechanical watch. It's unique, precise, gorgeous, and innovative. Depending on the brand and history, watches come down to the following:
    1. Social Status (If you can drop six figures on a Richard Mille, you're implied to be important)
    2. Class (A good watch, picked out by a good eye, can alone make someone no matter what they're wearing look classier and more important)
    3. Statement (You could buy an Apple Watch that reminds you to do all this extra crap all the time...but you could also just drop $20 on a great Casio watch which changes based on timezone, is a stop watch, and have 4 alarms. To be able to wear a simpler watch says to people "I dictate what I do, not my calendar or text messages." )
    4. Engineering Nerd (Looking in to how Citizen makes an Eco Drive...or how MD&F makes an impressive art piece for your wrist that is also incredibly designed technically...is really something for us science-minded people to appreciate).
    If you buy a Fashion Watch....or a Hublot....then you're just telling people you know nothing about watches, or style.

    The whole thing about watches is craftsmanship. A completely mechanical watch that can calculate the orbit of planets and moon phases and the time, that's something amazing. However, in terms of functionality, a smartwatch would be able to do all of that more accurately, while storing your music, telling the date, measuring your vitals, ... etc.
