Is Alpha M Wrong To Say Omega Is A Ripoff? Or Is It The Best Value Swiss Luxury Watch Brand In 2023?

  • In today's video, I react to a recent episode on the Alpha M channel, where Aaron Marino discusses brands that in his opinion are a ripoff. Included in his list is Omega, and what makes this statement even more interesting is not only Aaron's own controversial relationship with the watch community but also his profound love of Rolex. As many of you know, I've loved and enjoyed Rolex throughout the years, but recently I've changed my tune, as I doubt I'll ever buy one again. With this context, I share why I disagree with Aaron and actually think Omega is the complete opposite in that they offer the best value when it comes to Swiss luxury watches on the market in 2023. Join me for an in-depth look at Omega, why our opinions on the brand differ, and false narratives about luxury watches on social media, along with a look at some hidden gems from Omega and why the brand is so much more than 007 Bond Seamasters and space-going Speedmasters. What do you think about Omega watches?

Unfortunately it had a non Omega crown. His scheming independent watchmaker replaced the crown and bracelet with generic parts & kept the originals 20 years ago after a service. So I tried to restore it back to original. I took the watch to an Omega boutique and asked for a replacement crown. They told me I had to put the watch in for an entire service for $1100 in order to receive new parts. They knew damn well the watch wasn't worth servicing so they try to sell me a new Seamaster. NEVER again have I walked back into an Omega boutique. I sold my entire collection of 10 Omegas after that. Ironically my brother bought a cheap plastic MoonSwatch and recently visited the Omega boutique and they happily sold him a $270 nato strap.

Another thing to note is alpha m is conveniently forgetting that Rolexes used to go down in value after purchase. Now that ADs are selling to gray market dealers and flippers, the fake scarcity is driving prices up. By his logic, a BMW M3 is an overpriced car since it loses value.

The thing that is great about most Omega owners on the RUclips comment sections is they're lazy thinkers. No, I take that back. They love to think in cliches because it makes them feel better that the brand they love is simply not as desirable as a Rolex. So, what do they do? They cast the same ad hominem attacks on total strangers who desire or own a Rolex for WHATSOVER reason.
Note, before you come at me with the usual cliched attack lines, i did not say Rolex was better I simply said it is more desirable in the marketplace. And that is not opinion, it is simply a matter of economic reality. And before you get back on your Omega high horse just take a look in the mirror and ask yourself was the last moonswatch roll out the act of a company that has absolutely no interest in generating Rolex like hype? I would if my market share was less 1/3 of the big dog and falling.
And I say all this as someone who owns amongst other pieces a Planet Ocean Tokyo 2020 LE and a 1962 Constellation and who could care less what other people own nor why.

Fun fact: I personally asked Omega about its name origin. Omega is a greek word, it is actually the last letter in the greek alphabet (Ω) and it symbolizes "The perfection" "The greatness" and "The end of the journey". It literally means "great O" (Omega = "O, the mega"), and as you can see it is written as "O" sitting on a throne "Ω" :)

@@alxmackenzie I don't think it's connected with that words at all. In fact it seems like it's an ancient word appeared a lot earlier than Christianity did. So you can write it as "Mega omicron", meaning "Great omicron", or "Mega O", or simply "Omega", as Greek language tends to be laconic.

I can understand why people think Omega is overpriced. In the last three years, they have raised prices considerably, had poor supply of new releases in local boutiques and dealers and released an endless number of special editions; all combined with a perception of quality that has dipped (just) a little. The best (worst) example of this was the handling of the moonswatch release combined with poor build quality which has left a bad taste in many collectors' mouths. (We know they can build superb quality watches, there is no excuse)
I would love one of the new Aqua Terra Shades but with a list price of £6100 in the UK and no stock at my local dealer for over a year and with prices on the grey market unreasonably high it just isn't going to happen. For a similar amount, I can easily buy a choice of Cartier Santos' or Tanks from my local dealer which by comparison represent a better value for money option. ( I never thought I would say a Cartier was a value-for-money proposition in my life.)
Omega has an amazing back catalogue of wonderful watches which makes them a top choice for vintage collectors; I really want the company to flourish in the future but in order to do that it needs to treat its customers with respect and dignity.

They are now hard to value and off my pedalboards. They were replaced with a Maxon 808 and a J Rockett Archer, respectively.

Very well put. To some amount I chose the Speedmaster as my first and for the time being only luxury watch because of the more restrained and relatively understated character of the brand compared to Rolex. I respect the quality of Rolex, but the brand name carries a lot of baggage and preconceptions in the public eye.
And I´m glad that owning an Omega hasn´t diminished my enjoyment of my entry-level pieces like my very first Seiko 5 and also the Sinn 556i which I consider a mere classless watch given the robustess, unpretentious design and functionality-driven approach of the company.
Keep following your own ideas - onwards, upwards and sometimes inwards.

    Hi TGV,
Great video as always, and I agree with a lot of what you said, but there is one thing about the MODERN Omegas that I do not like and that is the price. I can not afford either Rolex or Omega, but when I was younger the sight of Pierce Brosnan wearing an Omega and seeing it in a shop window was something, and although it was expensive it felt, well, it could be possible one day with saving some money.
Today, I see the latest Bond watches and the price is eye watering. It is obviously over inflated because it is a Bond watch.
That is my problem with todays Omega I feel that the price that they are asking for is not worth what they are selling I see the price and if I had the money that I would be conned.
It is not just the Bond Omegas. It feels like it with their whole range.
I still could not afford it, but if I was to get a new watch, the new Tudors that were just released felt like they were worth the money. It feels like you are getting a modern watch with great design for an agreeable price for what it is.

Great video and informative response TGV. Lucky enough to own 3 Omegas and love them, fantastic watches that have comparative quality to Rolex but a brand that attracts far less douchebags to put it politely. There are many watches on my radar from JLC, Zenith, IWC and Longines to name just a few. But truthfully, there's only one Rolex I'd genuinely like to own some day, a GMT 2 Rootbeer. I just find the brand as a whole largely unappealing and far too much snobbery surrounding them. Despite the still very expensive prices, brands like Omega just feel more down to earth, the boutiques more approachable and the kind of customers they attract far less stuck up.

Every modern or vintage Omega I've bought second-hand has actually appreciated. If you started collecting vintage Speedmasters 20 or 30 years ago, you could divest today for a nice profit. But if you only got into watches recently, you are witnessing a lot of (necessary) price correction in the secondary market. I'm a little tired of Rolex content, price/investment content, and spec/value proposition talk. If a watch speaks to you, is decently well made, is available from a trustworthy source, and is priced fairly for the current market.....buy it if you can easily afford that price. Enjoy it for a long time. If you sell it years later, you can't really "lose" money. You know where the money is: it paid for the experience of owning the watch.

    • @heiner71
      @heiner71 Год назад +1

I think the key is "vintage" and "second hand". These watches already lost their "new watch value" and will remain steady or even increase in value over time (if kept in good condition). Luckily I like older watch designs and therefore mostly buy vintage/used watches. I never really lost money. If you always need the latest and greatest, yeah everything is a "rip off", if that is how you define depreciation.

Anybody I met who was truly into watches could appreciate a cool Seiko, Hamilton, Longines, Tudor, Omega or hell even a Casio. If the only watches you value are the most popular Rolex models then sorry you are not into watches but just there to show off. It would be like a car guy that just appreciates the newest Porsche models and can't appreciate the beauty of a Mercedes Oldtimer or hell a Mazda Miata for that matter. Sure Porsche and Rolex are amazing but first of all they are not the pinnacle of their respective fields and there is beauty to be found in so many different things that if you can't see that you are either very new to the hobby or just want your choices validated to boost your ego.

If Omega is a rip-off, then so are most luxury watch brands. I do think they go farther than most with their emphasis on limited editions and taking advantage of customer FOMO. • @apeekintime

Basically every luxury product is a ripoff - you pay for brand not for quality (at least compared to the mark up over non-luxury brands). The Rolex Submariner is a great reliable watch...The Seiko SKX was a great reliable watch. The Rolex MIGHT last longer and and might be more accurate but I don't wear the same watch every day (or every week) so I end up setting my watches on a regular basis. The differences between stated tolerances of the Rolex and Seiko movements wouldn't vary enough to matter for a normal human. If you take the money you saved buying the non-luxury Seiko you would have enough money for ever to repair/replace your Seiko and have a better investment vehicle than the Rolex. Rolex's have appreciated but they don't appreciate as well if you actually wear the watch and don't baby it.
Luxury stuff is pretty much a scam. In the clothing world most luxury clothes are made in cheap factories in Asia and the quality is marginally, if at all, better than the stuff sold by any large brand. When you buy luxury brands you are often trying to look like you have money. I bought a new Rolex a few years back but I don't wear it often to public events simply because I don't need to be Rolex guy but I'll wear it while I lift weight in my home gym or skiing where no one every sees what is on my wrist. If you want to seem rich... don't buy luxury crap and invest your dollars. You'll actually get rich instead of just looking it.

Alpha M doesn’t understand the basics here - the only reason Rolex appreciates is because they are hard to get, because people are buying them up for their investment value, which causes them to be hard to get, which increases the investment value and so on. In other words, its a bubble. It might never burst, but still a bubble type thing - its only worth so much because its hard to get because its worth so much. There is no reason for a Rolex to be worth what it is beyond simply the lack of availability. There’s nothing technically better about his Yacht master than an Omega Seamaster. In fact, the Seamaster with the co-axial movement is arguably a much better watch from a horology perspective. But because its more available, the after purchase value isn’t over inflated. So you can only think the way Aaron thinks if you only see re-sale value as that which matters in things. That attitude, is in fact the only reason Rolex is so popular and hard to get today. And this is a terrible thing because in order for the watch to fall into this category of absurd price appreciation, it must be super difficult or impossible to get. That ruins the hobby. You want a Rolex today and you have the cash? Good luck lol. You have to wait for months or years. So glad this isn’t the case for Omega and many other great brands. Imagine a world where you can’t ever get the watch you want because of this obsession with investment value. There’s really nothing very special about what’s inside most Rolexes. That’s why they don’t show it to you on almost all their models besides a couple brand new ones recently released.

It is true, most watch influencers are dealers or the ones they pretend they are not but their choice of wording always gave them away that they are in favor of selling certain brands for their benefit 😊

I really enjoy your channel, one of the most if not the best channel offering unbiased, real interpretations of the watch market and watches like the way you did this episode. Beautifully presented. Paul Thorpe is also another true commentator. Keep up the work. Im now on the hunt for an Omega Flight Master, and or your gold seamaster shown at the end of your episode, lol. Thank you

Great video (and not just because of the Wall Street cameo!). What you say can be applied to most aspects of life not just watches. If you like the watch and you find it has value enjoy it. Wear what you want not what you think others expect you to wear. Having a smile on your face is much more important than trying to impress. Have a great week sir

My first time watching one of your videos - it definitely won't be the last 🙂
My ex-wife swiped my Omega Seamster. It went with me on 15 years of service, in countless countries, parachute drops, etc, and when I opened the box after we divorced I found it empty, and the watch was gone. I have been searching for a suitable replacement for some time, and it will definitely be another Omega.
Thanks for such an informative and well-produced video 🙂

Mmm I feel like Longines is probably the best value proposition. In terms of where quality crosses over with cost most efficiently.

Well. Each brand has its history and its dedicated fan base. The speedmaster will always be legendary as it landed on the moon. Bulova could be too if they used a Valjoux mechanical like the one off that made it to the moon.
In the end buy what you plan on wearing. And be content.
Though I do love hand wind and auto m atic movements, but quartz has their place on our wrists too.

I'm a big of 'alpha M' as well, I love his channel but like a lot of general men's style channels I would never take his advice on a specialist topic like watches. For that, there's only one place to go and that's 'The Urban Gentry'. I also really like the fact you're not being negative about him or his channel, it shows your class. Given that you emphasised how much he has helped you in the past I actually found this video increased my appreciation of both your channels. Really fantastic content, makes me want to get an Omega even more than I already did which I didn't think was possible. That solid gold Seamaster (around the 18:10 min mark) is an absolutely stunning watch!
