Meri's commitment to staying in the marriage with Kody has been the bane of her existence on the Sister Wives program since season 1, where it was revealed that their relationship may not be as strong as reported. Season after season we watched as Meri was disrespected yet she stayed. In this seasons Tell All after the official dissolution of their marriage Meri is back and she's explaining why she stayed.
    Let's have the conversation

When Kody wanted Meri's money to purchase Coyote Pass he was holding Meri's hand and Robyn was also holding Meri's hand walking the property. Looked weird but it was Kody and Robyn conning Meri. That gave Meri hope.

Honestly the reason Meri stayed so long is that Kody and the cult they come from expects discarded wives to just be alone the rest of their lives and stay married for the sake of going to heaven. It's also not a coincidence that Meri finally decided to leave after her mom passed. Meri's mom did the very same thing even after her own husband died. Meri is deprogramming her own brainwashing and I'm just proud of her for finally choosing her own well-being.

This! I love James's content overall, but this video felt a little victim-blamey. When you are raised in abuse/trauma like Meri was, it can set you up to look for that in an adult relationship and to stay in that once you are there. I can see why someone would think "It's on Meri", but it's hard to leave an abusive situation when you feel like you deserve it. All of them were in this situation/cult, and all of them had to fight this programming to some degree. That doesn't make them at fault, it makes them survivors.

@@ExtraordinaryMachine333 most viewers continue to have issues with Meri because she is the most egregious and absurd example of what you're saying. She has had very different circumstances for a LONG time that most victims in an abusive relationship could only dream of, and or would only need an iota of to GTFO let alone the fcking man saying to her face GO AWAY. Instead she now has come up with another hard headed @$$ ridiculous as F excuse, AND WAS/IS STILL GIVING MONEY to this bull$#!+ family account, which I find INSANE how it's obviously for c***s Kody and Goblyn! Idk how TF Christine and Janelle didn't push back to pay for Ysabel's surgery or for Janelle to buy/build a house when they pay into it, AND paid for the down-payment on the c***s house!

If that catfisher had been real, Meri would have had her "closure" years ago.The fact that she knew Kody didn't want her is what drove her to rhe catfisher to begin with. She was devastated, heartbroken & alone.

    • @mytakeonreality
      @mytakeonreality  7 месяцев назад +7

I agree, if the catfisher was real Meri was gone. But this is also why I am a proponent of leaving because you want to leave as opposed to leaving for someone else. That puts way too much pressure on a new/fledgling relationship. In the cases were the new relationship fails (for whatever reason) it makes it more likely you will go back or regret the decision to leave the previous relationship.

Yes... Many keep forgetting the years of indoctrination she has had, and a mother who was telling her she had to stay.
Janelle changed to AUB before she married Kody.
Christine had a mother who left and was happier for it, and I'm sure encouraged her when she wasvthinkung if leaving, which was way before the time she left.

I also think she was waiting to be released. I believe this behavior was normal and both Meri and Christine grew up not questioning this. It took a long time for them to understand that they didn't need someone to release them. I think that is also a reason Meri was glad Kody released his anger on Christine because Christine wasn't suppose to release herself.

Even if youre getting financially compensated, its still time youve wasted and nothing's worth more than time. Life is so short and you're spending the one life you get doing something that degrades and humiliates you over and over again, corroding your soul. The only thing sadder than spending thirty years with a narcissist is spending thirty years and one more effin day.

  • @angelakelley7546
    @angelakelley7546 7 месяцев назад +33

In Meri's defense she was raised in the AUB and even in the mainstream LDS a woman is only allowed into the Celestial Kingdom via the agency of a man she is bonded to...either as her father or a spouse. I believe that a major part of her beliefs is concern that she will not be admitted to their version of heaven. Also she is by nature quite a determined person and that was part of her insistence that Kody tell her directly that he no longer considered them married. When she obtained the legal divorce Kody point blank asked her did she still consider them spiritually married and abiding by their covenant. I imagine she considered that an affirmation of their marriage. On a practical level I do believe she was in love with him for a long time. Remember she was only 19 when they married and Kody probably was her first love. Also on a practical level she likely stayed for the income from the show and the fame from the show that enabled her to reach success in her MLM. It gave her a ready made downstream of recruits to her sales team.
One last point Meri really does love being a part of a family with so many children. She might well have been the rule enforcer compared to some of the other wives but I remember her sadness at not being able to have more than one child herself. That religion places a great deal of emphasis on the value of woman by her ability to produce children. A barren woman is without value in general.

I think I major part of the reason why Meri didn’t leave was because she grew up in a polygamist family. She did not leave until her mother passed away. Her faith meant a lot to her. It held her in a loveless marriage. The tag team of Kody and Robyn did not help to break her away from the relationship either. I am a certain that she will forever feel guilty about the Catfishing. She was lonely, and someone took advantage of that loneliness. It’s suspicious as hell that Robyn was a friend with that person but that’s another story.I truly can’t sit in judgment of Meri’s decision to stay in the relationship as long as she did.
If I had been there to give her advice while she was in the marriage, I would tell her to leave, but I can’t criticize her for saying either. I’m just glad she’s finally out of that toxic relationship. I wish her happiness.

My now ex sister in law (who I thought it was an alpha female) allowed her husband and son to talk to her in an incredibly toxic way, completely disrespecting way. I told my husband, that I don’t understand why she allowed either to be disrespectful to her like that. She finally left my brother in law. He is talking all kinds of bs about her. I always think dude, I saw how you talk to her, she finally got tired of your bs. My husband knows if he tries that sh*t with me, I will leave and never come back.

I dont think Meri is stupid for wanting closure and her defense she was living off the false hope that was being fed to her by Kody & Robyn. Some people Love hard and Love is BLIND until the heart releases. I tell people all the time, when the heart & mind gets to same spot/location, then changes will be made. It has taken Meri awhile to get there, but she's there now. As for Kody, he said that his religion didn't allow him to divorce and this case he dragged her along so disrespectfully. Perhaps he should have met with leader to get approval to dismiss or divorce a wife. This is downright cruel and he's asshole because he didn't & WASN'T man enough to tell Meri straight up... My perspective is different. I'm never going to purposely judge Meri for hanging on so long. The decision to leave is gut wrenching. More than likely, that's a life changing experience followed by a change in the dynamics and communication within the family unit. Not being ready to move on creates exactly the kind of situation Meri is in.
I have been there and absolutely was forced to cut myself off from all family members. I believe that that extreme decision is rare, and follows some kind of cataclysmic breakdown of normal family relationships. In Meri's case it may have started from the polygamist ideals she believed in that competed her own feelings for Kody. She was the first wife, and it was her responsibility to help grow the family. Robyn, sadly, ruined the relatively comfortable family life the three OGs shared. She became Kody's soulmate and made Kody's world with Meri unsafe. The catfishing plus Kody's manipulations just sped up the decline of Meri's marriage. Add narcissistic tendencies to the mix, and it's heartbreaking.

I agree with you. It usually takes a victim of abuse 7 tries to leave.
Victimization from a narcissist can cause CPTSD. The trauma is real and deep. As a former Mormon, getting to the celestial kingdom is important. Important not for just the family, but mankind.
I love your videos James, but I disagree with your take on Meri.
She is no longer with Kody. Hopefully the life lessons she learned over the past almost 15 years will serve her in the future.
There is no need to pile criticism on her now. It feels petty.

We appreciate you James!! You have said it in a previous video - it takes a lot of energy to be someone you're not...and I think Kody is still spending energy trying to come across as "the benevolent husband", when the audience knows better. The Growing up in Polygamy channel suggested that in monogamist relationships, people divorce, meet a new partner, and move on. They said that Kody went through wife after wife after wife, but didn't appropriately divorce all three when he met Robyn...
Fully agree with you James in that Kody thought the OG3 were pathetic; he sees those women as "below him" and that's gross. Also, a woman that *wants* to help you cheat or deceive, doesn't care if there's collateral 🙄

As Cody said in their culture, the man is not allowed to divorce the woman yet that’s what Cody did with these wives he ignored them and abandoned them but he’s not allowed to just say I’m divorcing you, so with Mary it was important that he come and say I’m divorcing you, even though she had the chance when he actually did want the divorce to marry Robin so that they could adopt the children ha hathat was her chance to say no and make him divorce her so she kind of lost that chance she should’ve taken them so basically she just wants him to admit that he’s divorcing her and I think that’s the whole waiting now. Which I think is crazy to wait 10 years but whatever.

Kody used the catfishing incident as an excuse to end the marriage with Meri. He found that incident unforgivable and considered it cheating which when it comes to the woman is "vulgar" in his world no matter how many partners he has and even though she was only talking online. He even said on an episode that if the catfisher had been real, "her ass would have been gone". I really believe Robyn had a hand in the whole catfishing thing. She reported everything her "friend" who suposedly knew the catfisher told her about Meri and the catfisher to Kody. Robyn is a snake. Kody is disgusting and cruel. He leveraged Meri into a divorce because she was left devastated when she found out she had been duped, her heart was broken and Kody was angry. She was doing ANYTHING to win back Kodys' favor. He let her stay around for the $$ but made her feel unwanted and alone. So glad Meri has moved on but I hope she will open her eyes to the fact that her ex husbands' wife is NOT her friend.

I honestly believe Meri was in a delusional state of mind regarding her relationship with Kody. Once Kody met Robyn, he dropped Meri. Robyn was Meri's younger, more attractive replacement in the eyes of Kody.
Meri stayed out of a sense of loyalty and for the sake of the show.

Meri should have asked Kody a long time ago "do you wish to end our covenant" and then you watch maybe a month, if nothing changes you then say "I understand that things have changed for you in your feelings for me, no worries I'll move on".

I think there is several things going on here. Kody melted down that ring soon after the television show started. If Meri had left the show would have been jeopardized. Because of this Kody didn't push as hard as he otherwise would have to get Meri to leave the family. I think Meri stayed for the show money and because she was angry at Kody. Knowing that their faith made it hard for Kody to leave her, that he couldn't leave her and save face with the public, she stayed partly because she knew Kody couldn't leave. Meri didn't want closure. She wanted to make Kody take responsibility. Basically, she stayed partly as a form of revenge.

I can understand where Meri was coming from (even tho I am not of their faith). She has been programmed from a young child that divorce ( spiritual or legal)is wrong, unless a release is granted by church officials. Her mother undoubtedly told her she needed to stay in the marriage. Kody refused to tell her he was divorcing her spiritually or releasing her. Robyn was giving her false hope. I won’t criticize her for her choice to stay so long. Kody was a coward. He should have “bit the bullet” and released her; if he cared for her, he would have. No, he didn’t do it out of “love” for her but out of (narcissistic??) self love.
I appreciate the life lessons you are bringing out of this very very sad situation. Someone out there needs to hear what you have to say. Thank you.

He basically told them he doesn’t want them around, so they left, just as he told them to. So why is he so angry? If he would stop being so angry, and trash talking all his estranged wives he might actually have whatever non-sexual kind of relationship he wanted.

Talk about triangulation. I think Meri, Kody and Robyn have been manipulative for their own ends. Meri is the one who has fooled most people into believing she is a long-suffering victim. Suddenly everything made sense when Kody said, "I don't want her (Meri) reacting in a crazy way". For all 3 of their ends, Meri hanging on has kept the show going. She is a founder of this family and she could have ended it a long time ago with the ring story alone. We have had clues of her volatility. I think everyone has placated her to keep the farce going.
She is not going to let Kody cut her loose (unless a Sam comes along).

It’s extremely cruel what kody has done to Meri. And even Robyn because she was helping Kody to string Meri along once she came into the family. I’ve been in an abusive relationship before and they take a huge toll on you. Especially mentally. Kody tore Meri, Janelle and Christine down mentally and emotionally. I think it’s all of Kodys mental and emotional abuse that caused Meri to stick around for decades. He took all of her self confidence away. I’m so happy for her that she was able to gain her self confidence back and finally walk away for good. And I hope Meri doesn’t stay friends with him like he said he wants in the talk back special. He doesn’t deserve her friendship. He just wants her friendship for his and Robyn’s benefit. Like she said in one of this seasons episodes, he only calls her when he wants or needs something.

He could be saying 1 thing on the show and another in person. Like on their anniversary cheerings to "new beginnings" for their relationship. I think Kody and Robbin conned the other women to move from Vegas because their homes were in thier names and they could have kept their own money at that point. No, him and Robbin talked them into moving to a piece of land they had no intention of building on with all the wives. Instead they sold their homes and gave 300k each to Robbin and Kody. Relationship scammers at best at worst fraud.

Meri didn’t want to accept that Kody had conned her and dumped her because she’s not a narcissist. She married Kody with the genuine expectation and desire to have a family with him, through thick and thin, for life. Kody, on the other hand, has always seen marriage as _ideally_ for life, but the wife in question has to please him for life for that to happen. In his mind, marriage is purely about getting himself more of what he wants, and for _him_ it’s perfectly reasonable to end a marriage if he stops enjoying and/or benefiting from it, but not the other way around, because it’s about pleasing him, not them. To him, all relationships are disposable because Kody is a narcissist, and narcissists live in a world which revolves around themselves, and everyone else is like an NPC support character.
Meri was making the classic mistake that so many victims of narcissistic abuse do, which is to hold out and endure the abuse, because they desperately want the person they sincerely love and have invested so much into is a good person deep down. That they’re capable of doing the right thing, because they did the right thing when conditions were favorable for the narcissist, without realizing that that is the first fundamental rule of a narcissistic world view; you only deserve their supposed “good side” when the narcissist feels you deserve it. Or that they need to play the part to get what they want from you. Narcissists will never mature, and they will definitely never admit to doing the wrong thing and willingly change. Ever. Not going to happen. They’re masters of luring you in with promises and hopes and dreams that they have no intention of fulfilling unless you somehow manage to be the perfect helper, and even then those promises are purely for their benefit. Not because they feel any obligation to keep up their end of the bargain for your sake. You are disposable, and always were.
It’s a brutal, brutal thing, to accept that you’ve given everything you had to someone who never loved you, and will never love you. No matter what you do. It’s only natural for a heartbroken person to desperately seek out some kind of alternative explanation, even if it means taking the blame for their abusive partner’s actions. Anything is better than accepting that you’ve been conned by the person you loved.
