You don't know how much this webinars have helped me in my mixes, i'm eternally grateful
Yoad is the first engineer/educator that I've come across on RUclips that is actually explicit in showing you how to achieve certain results. No bullshit, no hiding the way he does things. Amazing guy.
Yoad
Yoda
Same letters, same difference. 👍
@Pitchfork Inc. I'm here because of Jem's Finally Woken album, particularly the track 'They', and have to say that as long as he keeps dropping knowledge like he is, sell away!!
Yoad Nevo is the real MVP. These videos are incredibly informative
OH BOY! I love that snare sound in sixteen during the song, also loved that bass sound!
Yoad is so positive and educated on the matter. This tut is a treat. Thanks.
32:40 "The Guitar is just there to remind us that its a rockband"
- Things you never say to a guitarist
how can it be that its the only instrument i can play more or less but the more i hate on the mix? hahaha
These videos have totally changed my thinking compression attack and release settings!
It is interesting how Yoad explains his way of using plugins and makes it very easy to understand when and how to use them.. I could listen him all day long. I would like that he has couple of similar projects to share, for guys like myself, home recording enthusiasts . I feel I can learn good things from this guy..
BEST TUTORIALS about mixing, i found in the net !
Another great webinar!
his reply to the question on how to layer 15 guitar takes: "what can I say, just be strong, and be brave..." hilarious :)
This helped me set the Bass in one of my old tracks fit better in the mix. Thanks
Thank you Yoad Nevo & Waves
Hi, you should check out the webinar Mixing Jazz with Waves by David Darlington. It's also on our channel and he's a great teacher like Yoad!
Yoad, thank you so much for all of this invaluable info. I love that Waves overdrive on a send for bass tracks to get that elusive definition and I've used some tips from your drum webinar too with great results! Keep em comin' :)
Fantastic stuff. Really informative, and song sounds great. Thank you.
0:32:38 "The organ is really huge and the guitar is there... just to remind us... that... it's a rock band" hahahahah
Thank you Yoad Nevo for this and the other webinars! And for Waves for there work for the community. But why always the same song. Please, can you find an other song in the future. This song - as great it is - we have heard it so many times.
Nice to meet yo Yoad. Thank so much for you help.
Waves thnx for this we need more stuff like this, rly helps
Thanks for this video. There was some really informative information in Yoad's commentary. I even picked up a few things that I haven't heard many of the other "big" guys mention when they are interviewed. I think my mixes just got better by osmosis. :)
Enjoyed watching this video and learned some useful techniques...Thanks!
for the love of sound, much paise to Yoad !
Thanks Yoad - So helpful.
Great all around tutorial
thanks for this Yoad its very helpful because you give the reasons why which is cool cheers
gracias Yoad y Waves1!
I know there are different webinars about mixing various instruments but wouldn't it be great if we could use the same song and artist, thus creating a series of videos on how to mix from raw tracks to final master. Awesome.
great mix
Big Yoad !!
this guy makes me wanna cry
awesome !!
Thanks alot Yoad Nevo
I like so much how Yoad uses reverb and delay effects
best bass tutorial, from here am droping an ulbum
THANK YOU
How do you EQ the bass or do you even use a EQ for the bass? I have a problem fitting the bass in the mix and get it good and loud enough.
nice idea to put snare a litle bit on left to get more space on center
is there a good tutorial that shows how to get a good overdrive\distortion guitar sound from the GTR?
and please what kind of DI you are using, and what kind of electric\bass guitars?
From Romania with Thancks
WOW what a mix this is just stunning, can we buy this track yer?
Awesome tutorial. I learned a lot but I wondered why you left in all the whistling annoying frequencies on the bass and guitars. I always cut those out right away.
It's the genre, how it's supposed to sound. What people are used to hearing. Read Your Brain on Music as well as watch Music Instinct by Philip Ball (also a book and on netflix) explains people buy and listen to what they want. Nowadays they want it to sound like that whether you like it or not. And just Mike Shinoda said, people eat their food like they like their music. People in the US eat fast food and junk. They listen to uberly compressed mixes because they want it like that.
great
please make a video showing the drum mix for this song!
i use this kind of comression alot on my mix but i havent tryed it with waves lpugins before
What was the type of DI you were using again?
I like how the last question was a sales pitch lol
what is the name of this song? i like it! awesome tutorial.
Song name? Superb tutorial. Top notch.
thanks topps bro
I have a question. When to record
a guitar thro a di box can you use pedals? Or it makes no sence?? Sorry im a noobie
Hello! Could you mention the order they are inserted the bass and guitar plugin
I need this program know where I can download or purchase is to separate instruments
pls i need too master my songs in your studio its on a wave format, just want a professional too do mastering for me
Imagine all the people.......
YYYYYup
Reminds me so much of The Killers. Good song
I was thinking the exact same thing
Chris Norris Same ;)
ditto!
If you are looking for a mix engineer, try Raz Klinghoffer, he's truely one of the best
What model of headphones from him?
Which DI box does he say he has on 50:18?
INNN WAAVVVEESSSSSSS!
So can someone tell me if I am seeing this write. It appears that Yoad instead of say using parallel processing, is just duplicating the same track and treating it the way you would in using parallel processing. That is he keeps the original track pretty dry then duplicates it onto another track with lots of plug in action and mixes it into the dry track. Why would you do this instead of parallel processing? I have always been told that if you just used a duplicate track you will have phasing issues.
can someone explain?
Thanks
Example at 24:50
No, you will not have phasing issues if you duplicate a track - its not true. All that parallel processing is taking a duplicate copy of the signal and adding it to a new channel before processing it! What Yoad is doing is effectively mimicking the same technique. If you add a duplicate signal to itself you will not get any phase (unless it is inverted), you increase the overall output signal's amplitude (its volume level). Typical plugins like distortion, compression, tremolo plugins won't affect the phase of the output signal. I would suggest some research on phase cancellation and how distortion/compression operates. Hope this was helpful to you my friend!
Thank you Cameron. Very Helpful.
what´s this kind of synth sound called that is used for this synth melody please`?
+triclops8 it does stand out in a pleasing way
"the guitar is there just to remind us that...it's a rock band"
fucking lol
I would be sort of frustrated to be in yoads position...lemme first say that I use and love my waves plugins and I know that he is involved with their development so there's a certain personal nature there...
but I would go crazy having to be on the hock at all times for demos like this and not being able to just pull up the fabfilter, valhalla or massey plugs that are my standards for certain things...like that delay...good god, it would've taken all my strength not to reach for timeless in that case...I do realize that, much like cigars (although I don't exactly agree with that adage), a delay is sometimes just a delay...I guess it's more of a comfort level thing
Compressing two guitars with stereo compressor is wrong way. Purpose of compression is making sound flat that in the mix we can hear these guitars. If you use stereo compression when left guitar hits high level your compression starts to work and make right guitar quieter. If your right guitar in that moment was quiet you'll get too quieter right guitar. it cancels the purpouse of compression
While what you're saying is partly true, this is music... there is no such thing as a 'wrong way'.
+Andrew Zeleno always trust your ears! i think it helps to preserve the dynamics between the left and right channel while squashing the dynamics as a whole. I wouldnt think you'd want the tracks to be equally as loud as each other because that would be incredibly annoying to listen to and you might as well just record one guitar and haas effect it.
The "Lennon Sound" is because the writer of this song is using exactly the same chord progression as Lennon did in Imagine. First I thought this was a strange cover of Imagine :) ...great tutorial but the generic song was awfully boring.
well this is a tutorial on mixing, not producing, and a mixing engineer is really not responsible for how boring the chord progression are, and this mixing technique can be applied to any kind of music, even on song with dissonance and unique progression
Yeah you're right the song sounds like crap.. so unoriginal and fucking boring, but the tutorial was really great
I think Yoad uses too much compression on everything but good tips.
which di box did he say around 50:20 ?
+Matthew Kho
I think this one: new-old-sound.com
¿Song name?
Comparing my DI guitars to the "DI guitars" at 27:41...
Some parts of it sounds like john lennon's imagine
imegen its imagen
Budget Killers.
Hmmm, sounds very muddy with too much highs on the leadvocal.
You're joking, right?? First... the video is captured from a webinar and compressed for RUclips... It's not going to be perfect. LPT for you... before you post something in a comment, think to yourself, "Could posting this make me look like a know-it-all douchebag?" If the answer is yes, don't post it.
Don't wanna sound like a dick or anything but although I think these people are very professional and they know what they are doing I can't help feeling like the final result is very mechanical and sounds almost like a midi file backing track... in this case for example I don't think this sounds like a rock band at all but maybe it's just me :)
why do u show us your pretty face?!!!
>sound technician
>has a shitty mic
not mean to be srs :P
It's not a shitty mic. It's just low-quality audio. Remember, this was recorded from a web stream.
oh okay
Jordan Reggin That's not really an excuse. Check out some of the RUclips streams for the Point Blank Music School - excellent quality. This is 2014, not 2004.
great tutorial, painfully generic track.
If I were a member of this band, I'd be very unhappy with this mix. Y'know it is amazing to have so many tools and plug ins to manipulate sound in any way imaginable, a great opportunity for creativity at the post production level. However this also affords the sound engineer the temptation to do too much. The problem here, and often is that the emotion or sound of the performance is not captured. So the sound guy has to do too much, or thinks he has to. Here we have such an example, a final mix that just stomps all over itself. The best sounding bass line I heard was the raw DI track, just wonderful. The guitars sound ok through the GTR, but too many layers... you do not need all of that. (how about a real tube amp and get it right and have the DI as a back up just in case?) From there, it all goes to sh^t, added bottom, added chorus, added delay, added gain reduction, The vocal sounds wispy and aspirate, and squashed all to hell. Take away the dynamics for the "said" extra punch, and so goes the expression. This is just another over-engineered product that loses the soul of the band.

Actually I like the way he talks about using plugins. He is very modest, explains things in very understandable manner, for all us who need to know more about post production etc. This is according to my opinion very good way of going into plugins and into mix as well. He sad that they did want to record for some reason this way, meaninig the Bass and Elec guitar goes thru DI. For guys in project studios budget studios these are good tips, I would say, maybe some of them. We all like music, many of us try to record something at home not in big studios with big tube amps and expensive gear . Talking about capturing emotions I don';t think that he did any harm to the mix, he just did some subtle touchs here and there and improve over all sound. I mean he has 25-30 years of experience. He did albums with stars, so talking that he did to much to mix and harm to emotion of mix I wouldn't go with that, but we all have our ears and opinions to..
+simpe zulu Hi Zulu, thank you for a polite response and I may have been too harsh in my criticism. I certainly agree Yoad is modest guy and he's a gentleman. I am "old school" so I love the preservation of dynamics and musical expression. Maybe that's because I am a musician and a seasoned audiophile. To my ears, a compressed version of a drum kit does not sound like a drum kit. However there is always the creative aspects of recording, of the band and engineer, a chorus effect, or maybe light clipping on the vocal for more edge, etc. Yoad does mention he fed the bass and guitar by di, that this offered the most creativity in the mixing stage. This also set the "stage" for this fine tutorial. It is my opinion though, many 1990's to present mixes are way too loud and honestly tiring to listen to. Yoad worked with Bryan Adams. Adams' music is very compressed. The "power" that the artists want, and the consumer wants, I hear it as constraint. The volume control makes any music sound bigger, in fact lesser compressed music lights up the room as the volume gets turned up. I am not against compression, almost all commercially released material has some degree of compression. The compression applied lightly does bring up some of the nuance and ambiance, makes bass sound fatter, larger, more defined, but too much just squashes the music.
You don't like to much comprassion I agree with you, but as you know in most cases clients demand mix to be compressed and to loud. It is what it is. I have to admit even today I am not quite shure do I really need to compress something or not. even if I have thirty tracks in mix and everything seems to be ok , nothing goes in to red. .Some tracks hitting -2,-3db. Some tracks are much quiter. So in master bus everything seem to be ok, there is no clipping, just little red here and there..If I put compressor on master bus, that mix will be around 0 .How to make proper and right decesion when it comes to mix loudness? Sometimes I am confused with all this stuff and this guy really talk understandable things from my point of view .Cheers
this was my comment I posted ten minutes ago..'' Don't wanna sound like a dick or anything but although I think these people are very professional and they know what they are doing I can't help feeling like the final result is very mechanical and sounds almost like a midi file backing track... in this case for example I don't think this sounds like a rock band at all but maybe it's just me :)'''' I totally agree with you The fringe guitar.. these mixes are not nice at all.. not to mention the exaggerated use of the low end that takes space from a lot of action in the performance in my opinion :)
very great tutorial, very boring and unoriginal song though
TheHearthOfDark true this song was pushed to number one in nz, but its all media monster driven anyways lol
