    Hey @Warren- can you pl guide how to take out most harsh/muddy frequencies from the vocals and make it nice and smooth and 'transformed' vocal strip.. I see a lot of singers having 'heavier' voices when they speak or when they sing live but in their songs- their voice sounds extremely pleasant and 'thin' as if all low frequencies are stripped off..

    So is he saying do your compression BEFORE the volume animations you do by hand? I do a ton of animations (what is he calling them here, vocal writing?) on the volume for my vocal track, so I'm wondering, do I even need compression at all? Also, I'm assuming EQ should be done first, before any compression or volume animation. ??

  • @antuyaaz

    Hello Warren, you will still process the vocals with some reverb and delay right? Is that a chain to follow after you’ve added the discussed chain and effects?

    Warren, I have watched your videos over and over again; and I always find something new and useful. Today however I found something that brings out the 12yr old in me. Some how I clicked on the closed captioning and started to laugh my butt off. Every time you say the word breadth it reads out Breasts. 3:46 "little bigger breasts at the end of that as well". Well said!

    • @TheMojobently

    Hi Warren. Is there a reason for using automation as appose to clip gaining the vocal track before compression etc. Thanks, James

    • @DivdHrt
      @DivdHrt 4 года назад

      Clip gain adjusts the volume before it hits the inserts, volume automation changes the volume after any effects or inserts by automating the fader level. Use volume (fader) automation to change levels with respect to the other instruments in the mix. Use clip gain to make sure your plug ins are fed a decent input level to get the required effect or tone you are after. For example, certain compressors or tube eq plug ins add grit or sparkle if you drive them hard, which you may want, or you might want to keep the tone as clean as possible instead. Then, you use volume automation afterwards to automate the level in the mix, so your tone stays clean/gritty etc regardless of level in the mix. How that helps.

    • @jamesconoruk
      @jamesconoruk 4 года назад

      Hi Matt. Thank you very much for your detailed reply. This is how I have been using clip gain - Warrens video got me wondering as he was using volume automation only. Thanks again Matt. 👍🏻

      Au contraire mon ami, I'm living proof of that! I have a crappy voice and singing isn't my forte, but with enough plugins, automation, takes/comping, pitch correction, and general processing, I end up with passable mixes. Granted a naturally talented singer would do better in less time, but nowadays everyone can sound good. Having said that, I agree that a good vocalist's voice & performance makes all the difference between amateur and pro...

    • @farvezafridifaizurrahman6980
      @farvezafridifaizurrahman6980 4 года назад +1

      @@rsmith9094 The distortion, morphoder and low-pitched vocals are meant to prop the lead vocal to the forefront and give it dimensionality. Whisper vocals add character to the top end. Distorted vocals for the mid range to cut through the mix and low end to give it thickness. All of this is not used as a creative effect, but more as a mixing tool to shape the "feel" of the track.

    Warren, love your channel! Question - when you're first approaching the vocal, do you ever look at using clip gain and automating that before you go to volume automation? I would think that it could help since you may not have to hit the compressors so hard and you'd still have the freedom of adjusting the fader to get it to sit right without messing up what you've already done before you move on to riding the volume fader...

    • @davearooney
      @davearooney 9 лет назад +2

      David Case I commented before I got too far into the track - I see not you have two vocal riders on there as well! I don't use vocal rider - does it write automation information to the track or handle it all via its own output level?

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  9 лет назад +6

      Hi David Case great question! I'm old school so I tend to use Volume Automation! Yes the Volume automation is on the main track so it hits the Lead Vocal sub evenly where most of the small increments of compression are taking place. I hope that helps? Thanks very much for your kind words I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

      Hi David Case the Vocal Rider can be set to just do small amounts of additional volume automation, I love it, everyone I've shown it to has bought one! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

      @@dartme18 I'm using Corsair HS60 so yours are likely better, I'll have to try it with my set of Sennheiser's I got too and see if they will do the same. Mine are decent ones but I think I know what happened and why I don't hear it as well. I have a volume up and down dial on the rear of my headset and I think when taking them off my thumb hit it and I didn't notice it turned down the volume on mine about a quarter of the way down and this caused the distortion to not come through as well as you probably hear it. Thanks for the reply, helped me figure out I was doing that.

    This video is Great. i just watched it along with the Vocal thickening pitch shift trick. I'm working out of Logic. How can I use your vocal automation/ride tricks in my DAW? More specifically, how does automation differ in Logic? It appears that in ProTools you are able to layer it in levels within your chain. Also, is there a utility I already have in Logic to trim with? Thanks again.

    Pro Tools 10 introduced "clip-gain", whichallows you to do what you're doing all in on one track and shows the difference in the waveform, and if you do it before you consolidate your comp you have it printed down to your tracks.
    The first time I had to work on a mix on PT7 LE I honestly struggled for the first while without clip-gain, it's just so genuinely useful!
    Which version of Pro Tools are you on? I can tell from the appearance of the stock plugins that it's pre PT10. I know producers who won't upgrade because they'd have to re-buy every plugin again.
    Considering the amount of plugins you own is that why you haven't upgraded?
