  • Check out this truck tour featuring the new 2021 Lightweight Freightliner model! Brad and Jeff from Springfield Freightliner cover the biggest differences between the P3 (the previous lightweight model) and the P4 (this 2021 model). We use lightweight trucks at Prime Inc. primarily for solo company drivers and some dedicated/regional tanker routes. The lightweight truck is designed for only one driver and has less space and only 1 bed (instead of the traditional bunk set up in a full size truck). The lighter weight truck allows the customer the ability to add additional weight in the trailer. For the Refrigerated Division, solo company drivers get paid 5 cents per mile extra if they are driving a lightweight truck.

    That rear top shelve is a bad idea. My lightweight has two doors and items still find there way out and on my bed from time to time. I would suggest adding a net.

    I drove the lightweights for about six and a half years. I'm happy to see they are finally getting some attention. Its just sad to see they got rid of the latching cabinet over the bed. Not such a good idea. I've gone to a full size truck now because I'm training. But again...im glad to see the lightweights finally getting attention after all this time.

      Is the weight limit on the drive axles still 34k??? And how much can u pull on a trailer total weight??? And last but not least can u do OTR thru out the country with this tractor hauling 80k????

      @thearchamgel050986 6 месяцев назад +1

      @BAYX4AREA sorry it took so long to respond, I just saw your comment. Yes...weight limit is still 34k on the drives. I don't remember what the heaviest weight load was I ever pulled unfortunately. And yes...I did otr across the entire country with the lightweights. I would suggest having the passenger seat removed to make room for a fridge and make yourself a little cooking station in place of the seat. Thats what I did when I was in them.

    Awh, wish I got one of these! I’ve been driving a P3 company lightweight the last few months and my biggest gripe has been the weird fuel tank setup. I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve pulled into a fuel island only for the pumps to be offset opposite to the tanks.
    I’m not sure the open shelf is the greatest idea over the bunk. Maybe add a stretchy net? Or at least a mounting bracket up there for a microwave + power cord!

    Looks beautiful. Wish I qualified for when I upgrade out of my 2018.
    Only downside is while it looks like extra cabinet space, I personally think any cabinet on these trucks should have doors that latch. Especially when its over the drivers head. All it takes is a few good bumps and things fall out.
    Also, I seen the CB location/wires, has the internal antenna been improved or is an external still the best option for a quality signal?

    Seems to be a Blindspot for tall drivers who like to sit tall in the seat. The tray in the back needs a cargo net. Can I get one with opening sleeper doors and side box doors. What is the tare weight full fuel and driver. How many miles to a tank? What is the avg. Fuel milage.

    - I want to compliment the new shelf design over the bunk, as brilliantly simple ! - the storage in the late model cabinets is great, (used those cabinets for 42 months) - but those doors do pop open on their own, on bumpy roads too ... The cabinets while nice, are difficult to access, clothes on one side , food on the other side, dark inside, like I said this shelf is brilliantly simple, small storage totes will take the place of cabinet doors, along with ease of access... I really like the shelf ! Good job freightliner ! - - please reply to my other question regarding engine specs ! Thanks!

    • @PRIMEINCTRUCKING
      @PRIMEINCTRUCKING  3 года назад +1

      The lightweight trucks have a DD13 engine. Yes, they can heavier loads; and the performance is good. These lightweight trucks pull well, and the MPG is comparable to the bigger DD15 engines. MPG depends on how the driver is driving the truck. We utilize lightweight trucks currently in the Refrigerated and Tanker Divisions. The lighter weight of the truck allows the customer to put more weight in the trailer.

I've heard too many reports of electrical emissions problems with the Paccar engines even our some of own in house mechanics and shop leads have advised to avoid that engine. Meanwhile that I'm aware Prime does not offer Peterbilt's with the new Cummins X15 engine that the rest of the industry seems very pleased with why is that?

    Bad part of moving batteries from the back of the truck...Bobtail/empty trailer traction goes down a bit. You already need every bit if weight in the rear axles on the tractor in certain situations... especially on ice. It may not be a huge difference, but you will DEFINITELY miss it once you start spinning out or fishtailing...

I eventually got into a Peterbilt and that had plenty of room. It kinda felt a little gutless compared to my Pete as well. Which is weird since it’s roughly the same size engine. One comment on the cameras. Driver facing I'm against it but outward facing I hope they do. Drivers are getting so stupid out here nowadays and in addition there are so many personal injury lawyers pushing if you been in accident with 18 wheeler we can get you every dollar you deserve. It is a huge deal for protecting the driver and company in the unfortunate event of an accident.
    Been driving commercial vehicles since 2008, tractor trailers since 2016 and a dash camera should be standard equipment on all trucks. Had way too many close calls.

      Honestly forward facing cameras aren’t a big deal unless the company chooses to harass drivers over unavoidable critical events when no collision. My company has them , one on windshield facing out and one in each hood mirror to see down the truck. They have saved the company and drivers during accident investigations , sure safety looks at them during a critical event but unless they see something alarming they don’t even call . They also use this footage at safety meetings not to embarrass a driver but to emphasize what no to do .

      You are correct, it has a lot to do with the driver. But if you’ve driven 389s or 379 you’ll know there’s a huge difference in how they handle wind and weather. They just hold the road better! But that original comment is true. At least 75 percent of the time it’s a Freightliner or Volvo in the ditch. Could be because there’s thousands more of them on the road or could be there just not built for bad weather.
