I wish I could give this video 1000 likes. My wife wanted auto start. I didn’t think it was possible. I contemplated paying somebody to install the system but I just watch this video a few times and did exactly is this guy showed us and it works like a champ. I can’t thank you enough.
So glad to hear that, I wanted it to warm it up in the winter, find myself cooling it down more often this summer 👌🏻
@jeffofalltradeshandymanser1982 yes it is designed that way..
Sorry I'm just seeing your comment, yes, the engine cuts off when you open the door. It's a anti-theft design.
👍🏼
Just did my plastic 2023 4Runner today, took me 2 hours because I'm old and can't see worth a crap - never could've done without your video. Thank you!
Congratulations!
Thanks for the thorough video. I’m not getting the remote starter but I needed to see how to remove the glove box because of a squeaky passenger air vent. This is perfect.
You're so welcome! Thank you for watching and commenting!
Finally got around to removing the glove box. Fixed that squeaky vent. Thanks again!
@@vitanksi awesome
Great instructions! Took me 35 minutes including getting ready and putting tools away thanks to you!
Awesome! It's apparently way faster when you're not filming it 😂
Thank you for taking your time to put this video together! I watched a few and yours was the best! Took everything apart and back together… all worked perfectly and I have the guidance by you to thank!!
Thank you for the kind words! This one definitely took a while to film, but we wanted it to be the most complete one on YT for this product. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
Thank you for the video, I followed yours step by step & was successfully able to install it on my own.
Great job Ashley!!!
Thanks for the tutorial. Simple and to the point.
Update. 05/25/2024: I just put my remote start system in. Aside from a couple of hiccups due to my not paying close enough to the directions and illustrations in this tutorial, the installation went pretty much straight forward. Thanks again for this tutorial.
(My install was into a 2024 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off Road Premium.)
Thank you for watching
Wow! 24 TRD premiums dont have remote start? Sounds wild to me! Happy for you now though
Crazy right!
Best video I've seen on this install. Thanks so much for sharing the info and making the job 10 times easier.
You're welcome, thanks for watching!
Outstanding video!! After watching it once and skipping through it a few additional times I was able to install my StartX system and fix a dash rattle (in the passenger air vent) in about an hour. This video gave me the confidence to even attempt the install. Invaluable!!
Love to hear that! We really appreciate your kind words, thanks for watching and enjoy the remote start
Thank you! Your video helped me tremendously for my 4Runner. Great video with clear step-by-step instruction.
Glad it helped, thanks for watching
Just installed mine, works perfectly. Thanks for your walkthrough!
Congratulations! We love it.
Perfect step-by-step instructions! Thank you! I'm an idiot when it comes to cars and even I was able to do it in about 30 min by just following along.
Yay! Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad it helped 💪🏼 thank you for watching!
The best details on 4runner remote start
I love it. Worked out so easy ❤
I'm glad it helped you out, Thank you so much for watching!
Thank you!!! Works perfectly on the 24 model, your step by step was spot on and helped a ton.
Awesome! I'm glad it helped 😁
Best video on this install yet, thank you!
Thank you very much 👌🏻
I had an issue where the unit wasn't getting any power. I realized the previous owner of my truck disabled the DCM module by removing the 7.5A DCM fuse. The harness for the Start-x unit utilizes the DCM harness, so this explains why it was getting no power. I replugged and it worked fine.
Also - 21:07 when putting the airbag back on be sure to slide the little hook into the slot on the left hand side before doing the clips at the top. Otherwise you have to pop the clips back out and slide it back in again which is a little annoying (I did this lol)
@Installs and Pitfalls this was a great video and super helpful, I appreciate you taking the time to make it.
Wow! I'm so glad you got it figured out. And definitely slide the hook in 😂 thanks for watching and letting us know 👌🏼
Very well detailed instructions! Thank you! Work very well on 2023 4Runner sr5 premium
Thank you for watching! Enjoy your 4Runner, I absolutely love mine 👍🏻
Excellent! Gettin one for my new 2021 4Runner TRD Off-road Premium!
Awesome!
I just installed this remote start with your instructions on my 23 4runner. Followed to the t. Super easy. Super helpful video. Thank you so much.
After i plugged the wires into the remote start box i accidentally pressed the little black button while the led lights were on and they turned off.
I had to unplug all the wires and start the plugging sequence fresh.
Thanks again.
Awesome! Thank you for watching!
I was wondering about that, thanks
Yeah, if the sequence is interrupted you have to unplug it and redo the sequence
Excellent step by step instructions for 2020-2023 4Runners. It made this project a breeze. One thing I will mention is: their is no need to remove the air conditioning knob. The knob does not interfere with the removal of the panel. Thank you for making and sharing this video.
Hmm, I didn't even notice the knob part, great catch 👌🏻 and thank you for watching and congratulations on the Install 💪🏻
@jeffofalltradeshandymanser1982 hi, yes it does stop when you open the door. It's apparently for anti-theft.
One more great tip, thanks
Thanks 👍🏼
Thanks for making this video Brother. It made installation a breeze on my buddy’s 2021 4Runner. I wish the 2018’s was this easy 😂
You're welcome, I heard those years were a little more "difficult" 😂 thanks for watching and let us know how your 2018 installation goes
Nicely done. I like you did this in real time. The N2 install looks much more involved
Thanks, we tried to combine a couple videos we watched into one steam of consciousness 😂
Thank you for your video. My kit arrived with no instructions aside from the website, which does not cover the programming. Got me up and going in a minute. Thanks Again.
Awesome, yeah the lack of real directions or in-depth videos on tons of products I've bought over the years made me start the channel. I'm glad it helped 👍🏻
Waaay helpful than the actual install guide! Thank you! Saved me from a lot of Google to figure out different tab locations. Not to mention many plastic panels from snapping!
This disassembly and a few others made me see how much effort Toyota put into ensuring their vehicles have great durable fit parts
Thanks again and Happy New Year!
Thank you, they're actually fairly easy to work on if you know the sequence and where the clips are. Happy New Year 🎊
Awesome video. Installation was a breeze thanks to you.
Thanks, glad to have helped! Thanks for watching and giving feedback 🙂
Liked and subscribed. Thanks for making this easy for me!
Awesome! Glad it helped and thanks for the nice words!
Nice! I’m getting a ORP (trading in a srt Durango) and was going to get the dealer to install a remote start at purchase . I been on the fence now with 12volt and this system and it seems like everyone has positive stuff to say about this kit. Super easy install too.
Yeah, it's definitely one of the easier projects. Great way to save some $.
Thank you, best video on this I have seen. Completed it today, no issues with your help.
Awesome! Congratulations, enjoy!
GREAT VIDEO ,,,,, i watched a few others from start x ,, they had u taking apart the drivers side i almost gave up then watched your entire video and it was a breeze ,,,,, thank you for input mine is a 2022 4runner

Well done, thank you.
Thanks for watching 👌🏻
Excellent details
Thank you!
you are the goat🐐 bro! will def be following this when getting the remote start. you got more things coming for the 4runner?
Hi, yes we are going to be installing some recovery points on the front of the 4Runner and some catalytic converter anti theft shields. We hope to get them done next week. Thanks for the kind words and thanks for watching!
It looks doable but if I want autostart I’m just sending my wife outside to get in the 4Runner and push the button. She’d only have to do that a few times before she tells me to take a flying leap.
😂 that's certainly a strategy, not sure it's a good one, but it's definitely a strategy
Theres even reviews for this thing on amazon that say to find this exact video. Youre a lifesaver for tards like me, man
😂 thanks for the kind words, I tried to think of everything. We appreciate you watching, enjoy the remote start 👌🏻
Great video thanks for the step by step. I'm a little on the fence though now that you said its shuts off when you open the door.
Well, it can warm up your
interior, seats, engine & defrost/de-ice on the glass.
Or cool the interior down in the summer. I think
the benefits outweigh the negatives, but I live where
get all the extremes.
I can't believe people are saying this.
The reason the engine will die when the door is opened is because it is an anti theft system. Therefore, no one steals your car while the engine is running.
To be honest, I didn't know it turned off until I bought it 😂 it just never occurred to me
Thank you
You're welcome, thanks for watching!!
Thank you for this. I’ll watch this a few times then I’ll be trying this install tomorrow on my 23 SR5. Toyota wants $250 to install it…..
You can definitely do it! Definitely worth it to watch it a few times, but I think we covered everything. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. Good luck 👌🏼
Hi. I installed it. Truck does not start and sensor flashes red. I reset it twice. Any thoughts??
@@DavidGuilford31 when you are programming the black box, is it flashing the correct sequence? If not you'll have to unplug the wires from the box and start the sequence over.
@@DavidGuilford31 were all of your doors closed?
@@installsandpitfallsgood morning and yes I followed sequence and doors were closed. Your video is so helpful and easy to follow, just the dashboard lights up then nothing, and flashing red. I am in touch with StartX, he got back to me last night actually, so we’ll see what happens today. I’ll try it all again.
Just want to add my comments on a great job. I approached the install on my '23 4Runner with trepidation, always afraid of that snag or plastic dash piece that snaps... the key here is just like Simon Says... do exactly what the video says, and you will be done in one hour. Or less!
So glad to have helped out, we took extra care to document this one for sure. Thanks so much for watching and the kind words!
Great video but it would be helpful if you let people know to push that side panel, where the temp knob is, towards the back of the car with the plastic tool to get the clips undone. You kind of cover up how you are removing it until you say it just slides out. It would help to see all the clip locations on the part too. That part was the hardest thing with the whole instalation Thanks again.
Thanks for the input, I'll definitely make sure to give more details and instructions in future videos. I'm still learning how to be more of a teacher than just a doer. Thanks for the advice and thanks for watching!!
Made it a breeze!
Awesome!!! Glad we could help, thanks for watching!
What model of 4runner is it because I have the limited and it comes with remote start
I've got a 2020 Off Road Premium
Want to try it out myself just a lil nervous on the airbag situation!
I haven't heard of anyone having a issue with unintended deployment (damn that sounds crazy) but I understand. I was just careful.
I guess you could disconnect the negative battery cable, but I haven't looked into that, so research it if you're planning on doing it that way. I don't want to give out false info.
This is def the best video I’ve seen yet!
Thank you so much!
Most complete professionally shot auto video I have ever seen, amazing and thank you. I now plan on installing remote start on my 2023 4Runner myself. What would you guess is the time frame from start to finish for old school shade tree mechanic ?
Thank you so much for the compliment! I'd say 1-1.5 hours, I don't think it will take that long, but i always add in some extra minutes just in case. Let us know how you do, thanks for watching!
I know this is none of my business but, did you get monetary compensation from Start-X or Amazon for the production of this video ?
No worries, we don't receive any compensation for our videos and we buy everything with our own money.
Thank you, 5 star video@@installsandpitfalls
Thank you so much 😊
Any problem with the panels being loose after doing that job?
Nothing loose so far
Thank you for the detailed video. Followed it scene by scene and now I have remote start. The video Start-x has is terrible. They should be paying you.
Haha that would be nice! Thanks for watching, glad it helped.
Thanks for the video I would of broken atleast a few clips
Yeah those hidden clips are tricky
$195 now. Geeze was hoping to get it at the price you paid thanks for the vid don't know why they stopped putting them in from the factory
Yeah it was a pretty sweet deal, but 195 isn't too bad. Thank you for watching, if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask!
@@installsandpitfalls keep me posted I just picked up one today TRD premium
@@leardi58 I absolutely love ours, such a smooth ride and so capable, congratulations 🎉
it only comes from the factory in the pro or the limited ,,,, its not hard to install
They skimp out with not including remote start. I have a 2017 limited and it does not come with it!! Kind of annoying at this price point!
Can you pair it to the Toyota App??? Thanks :)
I don't believe so, but it wouldn't hurt to look on the manufacturer's website
I wanna know what you mean if you don’t install the warning sticker wiring and someone does start it by hitting the lock 3 times will it hurt somebody?
In the weird scenario where it's at a oil change place and someone is under the hood or whatever and another tech pushes buttons. It's a safety switch for whatever reason, probably corporate lawyers were involved.
@@installsandpitfalls so in a detailed question. If the hood is open can I or a tech start the car normally with the push button inside the cabin and everything be fine? Is that extra piece only if someone hits the button 3 times while the hood is open? I’m still confused on what that extra piece does and is it critical to install it to not destroy my 2023 4runner lol
@@JayNapo that hood pin is a remote start disable switch. The push start will still work 👌🏼
Is the truck sapose to die when you open the door after using the remote?
Yes, it's a anti-theft feature.
It can warm up your
interior, seats, engine & defrost/de-ice on the glass.
Or cool the interior down in the summer. I think
the benefits outweigh the negatives, but I live where we get all the extremes. I just restart the truck and go.
Thanks ,,,, my friends new dodge truck doesn't turn off when the door is opened
@@user-fe9bd7ec2r no worries, I think even the factory Toyota turns off.
Everything seems to work, but has anyone had any issues with automatic headlights turning on after dark, mine won’t flip over from DRL. Found that out when I left some where, didn’t seem bad with my DRL reflecting off buildings windows and stuff, but then I got on a road which no street lights and holy crap I couldn’t see anything, it was my first time driving it at night. Don’t know if I bought it used like that or if something isn’t connecting right with all this wiring. Anyone else have issues??
I haven't heard of this issue, maybe someone else can chime in if they have.
I don't believe 4Runners have automatic headlights, just DRL, Low, Fog and High beams. Unless yours is the limited, but if you have a limited from 2020 and on it should already have remote start.
Mine is a 2017 limited, my light switch control has auto on it, but since I hardly drive at night, I never really tested it before adding the remote start. It’s not a huge deal I’ve never had automatic lights so I’m used to flipping them on and off manually.
Is there any downside to this product? I guess I'm just trying to understand why Toyota did not use a similar module from the factory, since it's so easy.
So far no down side that we've ran into. I'm not sure why they don't/didn't include it, my opinion is they were going to try monthly subscriptions for different options
@@installsandpitfalls Gotcha. Thank you for sharing this video.
Toyota probably has a similar bypass for a lot more money.
It would probably be around $700 or more to have the Dealership do it
Once it’s started can you lock the doors while running with the fob?
Hi, the 3 button sequence to start the 4Runner uses the lock button on the key fob. So it's already locked and running ☺️ when you open the door the engine shuts off, it's a anti-theft feature.
I thought it was the unlock button my misunderstanding. Thanks for replying and informing me!!! Take care!
@@corystaples8948 glad to help 👌🏼
does anyone know if this will work on a 2024 yet?
I looked it up on Amazon, it shows 2023. You might be able to email or call the company to confirm, I assume it'll work but it would be best to confirm with them.
just installed on my 2024 ORP today and works perfect, will be a lifesaver for AZ summers
Great info, I assumed it would work on the 24's, but I didn't want to guess when giving an answer. Thanks for confirming 👍🏻
Hello. Do you have interest in testing our Toyota 4 Runner product?
What product?
interior door handle or grilles@@installsandpitfalls
Or other interior car accessories, if you're interested, I can show you the link.@@installsandpitfalls
Try the Toyota fob first!! This mod could be totally unnecessary. Press the lock button three times holding it down on the third time for about ten seconds. If lights flash the it will start right up.
That's true, especially if you bought a used vehicle.
I wish there was a way to bypass that when you open the door it shuts off instead of restarting it but nicely done 👍👊
Yeah it would be nice to override that
It seems weird to shut off when opening the door to get in, and then have to start it backup again
100% agree 🤔
I'd prefer that it stayed on as well
No way around it.
@@studioxps72 exactly, I wish it gave the option
The factory installed ones work the same way (shuts off).
Dashboard squeaks has entered the chat 😢
Uh oh, we haven't had any squeaks. Have you zeroed in on the location?
@@installsandpitfalls I nervous to start the project because the truck is so damn quiet from the factory that I would imagine one false move and you will be in bed with a weak or a rattle till you sell the truck. Also, it’s annoying that the truck turns off when you unlock the door with the remote or open the door. Defeats the purpose of only having one cold start
@@on2wheels275 Why don't you knock it off with them negative waves? Why don't you dig how beautiful it is out here? Why don't you say something righteous and hopeful for a change?
@@JoseCruz-kp7ru because it’s the Internet and it’s meant to be funny not hurtful. I already spoke with the creator of this post about my apprehension to do this task because the truck is so damn quiet and squeak free from the factory that I would hate to loose that by just adding a remote that shuts off when the door is open and forces you to “restart” the truck which makes it counterproductive to the idea of a remote start. Not everything in life can be as you see it Jose. Just go outside touch some grass. It will be ok
Nah, I live in a place that can be 0°F and 115°F, I generally only use the remote start for extreme temps or conditions.
What pointless mod if it shuts off after start up lol
Well, it can warm up your interior, seats, engine & defrost/de-ice on the glass. Or cool the interior down in the summer. I think the benefits outweigh the negatives, but I live where I get all the extremes.
I think it has something to do with push to start. My 23 Taco TRD factory remote start shuts off when I open door. My sons 22 Taco SR5 with start x stays running but has a key. I'm buying either this one or the Accesoride for my wife 23 4Runner TRDOR . Thanks for the vid.
You're welcome, I think it definitely has to do with the keyless so nobody hops in and steals the vehicle. Thanks for watching!
I came across a reseller here where I live and was just about sold till I looked it up. it really is a shame about the shut off feature. my 07 Escalade remote starts and stays on. hope someone makes a better one down the road though 🤙🏽
It's definitely something to consider, it really hasn't bothered me in the least. Thanks again 👍🏼
Looks to complicated. A lot of potential damage. Plus so much for your warranty.
It's not complicated, if something happens just remove it 👌🏻
