The first time for the, "Where did you guys go?" Wasn't funny, every time there after only made it more uncomfortable. Just say what you're going to say and then recap.
Stock size tires are best. I use BFG KOs 2 as well. I’ve been from Moab to Colorado mountain passes to Big Bend. And when you’re doing 90 on the interstate to get there you’ll appreciate it. Also the spare is the same size😉
Add a few of the following easy cheap things to your survival kit: Flare, Fire starter kit, all weather tarp, First Aid kit, knife,, 12" zip ties, Duct tape, nice length of low gauge nylon rope, hatchet, bush saw, blanket, fishing kit, whistle, compass, flash light, batteries for flash light (stored unopened separately) 10m socket with extension (80% of the bolts on that trucks engine are 10 mil), #2 Phillips head screw drive (get an 11-in-1), a 2 foot long 2x8 piece of wood (for jack stand on soft ground), anti Sasquatch spray (otherwise known as bear spray:)... if you want to spend a little more, then a wined up radio, a solar rechargeable battery kit, an EpiPen, multi tool, a water purifying straw, and a bottle of whiskey (or Vodka) and some power bars, oh and for the end of the world stuff some chocolate bars and a few packs of cigarettes (to trade).
Consider relocating your rear diff breather valve if that big puddle you splashed through is a common occurence. I use a screw-in nipple and 3/8 fuel line to get the breather up around the tail light, cost about $10 per vehicle (2019 4Runner and 2016 Tundra). Great video for early mods, I'm gonna check out those roof bars.
Something to keep in mind when you're packing all that gear into your storage box: if you ever find yourself in a rollover or a collision, all that stuff can come loose and literally kill occupants that would otherwise be unharmed. A box that is permanently mounted (painful, I know), with a lid that secures to the box, or a cargo cage/cabin separator are a must.
@@JesseSchimmel I don't recall the brand name, but I got it on Amazon. Just search "4runner center console organizer" and it will come up. They also make something similar for the glove box, though I don't have that one.
I agree that it's rediculous that Toyota sells an off-road vehicle with Toyota Racing Development labels and equips it with tires that only good for average weather conditions on paved roads.
Had my runner for 6 months now. Took it out stock at a local rock garden. After that I needed sliders. Took it out more, now I need clearance, so I got suspension. Slashed one of my 265s side wall, got it replaced and prepped for bigger tires. BMC/CMC, pinch weld delete and bumper trim, I got wheels and 305s e rated tires including spare. I would load my spare in the hatch everytime I wheeled, so then I got a swing out spare tire carrier. I do a lot of night runs so I needed lights. Got baja d squadron and s2 pros. My point is, take your rig out and you'll know exactly what you need to hit the trails. For me, functionality is priority, looks last.
This is so stupid! .... is that enough to help the algorithm? 😅 only disliked this video because i think you told me to lol However Thx for the insight. So excited to get mine.
pre·ten·tious /prəˈten(t)SHəs/ adjective attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed. Jason explain why you start off with “pretentious adventure” 🤷🏻♂️
Hey Jason also Jason here 😂 seen your vid today I also picked up TRD OFD premium a few weeks ago. Always like them but took me 20 years to decide and finally buy one. your correct in your opening statement 🤣
You missed the perfect opportunity for my favorite dad joke while you where putting the Plano box back in. Gotta check the straps and say "oh ya, that's not gonna go anywhere!" Haha
Jason, you are a funny guy. Changing new tires is crazy. Keeping the same size tires is brilliant. LFD roof rack looks cool. Ceramic coating is overkill. We are confused as to why you ordered the rock slider steps "unpainted" . The steps are cool. Other upgrades are nice, but I would skip the chemical seat treatment. Watch our Chef's videos. Let's get cooking with the #chefs.
Nice video. I have a 2018 4Runner Off Road Premium. I put K02s on it (stock size) and love them. I put a steel front bumper with a 12,000 pound winch on the front. I put an Eibach 3 1/2 inch lift on it. I put the same rock sliders on, that you did, only without the top plates. I put on a nice 3/4 length roof rack with rear side panels that I can mount fuel containers or other accessories on. I installed a two drawer storage system in the back. Because of the less than desirable departure angle, I bought a skid plate that goes in the trailer hitch and mount it when I'm going off road. I've banged it pretty hard a few times and it took the hit instead of my truck. I highly recommend getting one of these. I've got a couple of other projects in mind. But right now, I'm very happy with the vehicle and it's performance. I just got back from five days in Utah at the Winter 4X4 Jamboree. I had a great time and the 4Runner performed excellently.
I keep my recovery gear in the same OD green Plano case. Tried other cases like Roam, Front Runner and Milwauke pack out but ended up sticking with the Plano for the weight savings and its the perfect size for me.
Nice. I use Milwaukee pack out cases for other stuff, and almost went with that for this. But I agree that this is pretty much the perfect size for a basic kit.
So you forgot the simpliest of mods! Where did you get that cool decal of a 4Runner climbing up mountains on the logo on the sides?? Great video though. Btw, LFD is awesome. Their rack was too low for a Yakima Skybox 18 and the tailgate hit the back. I asked what I should do and they sent me risers to check out. Thats customer service! I'd buy from them again anytime!
Wide tires actually give you less traction not more. and create a lot of unnecessary issues. If you want height and are willing to be less wide and save money at the same time go with 235x85x16 which are 9.6 inches wide but are 31.7 inches tall and are waaaaay less money. They use this philosophy in Australia and Africa, and it they work great!
Does anybody know it the "grey wire mod" still works on these newer TRDs? For those that don't know, there is a grey colored wire under the dash on older TRDs, it notified the rear e-locker that the vehicle was in 4lo. But you could cut the end of the wire and ground it, and the sensor would always say it's in 4lo, allowing you to use the e-locker in of course 4lo, but 4hi and 2wd. Also having smashed one on my 03 taco, I would recommend picking up a e-locker guard/skid plate. I wanna say I got mine from LowRangeOffroad, and it was around $50 (although times have changed and things cost more), but it's a great protection investment for a $2000 factory part.
Those rock sliders I mean heavy duty steps are are great mod! The 4Runners already so capable without a lift! Mod #7 should be to delete those Crome stripe things Toyota put on either side of the front logo as of 2020!
Just found you. Subscribed. WE Washingtonians (if you are from here)need to stick together. I have the 2018 TRD Off Road for similar reasons. I stuck with my Dunlops because shy of slinging mud, the off road tech. makes them work REALLY well. Most hate on them right off. And I was Leary at 1st myself. But I am telling you, they have not let me down in EVERY climate we have had. Every terrain except mud slinging they have impressed me. (when they wear out, I will get the K02's) My 1st and only modification has been rock sliders from White Knuckle. They are worth every penny! Can do what yours do for a great price. Came all set and ready to mount up. Guess I need to go find out if your rig has KDSS.
You needed to mention Canvass Back for the rear. The plastic in the 4 Runner scratch so easily. Also, the factory tires removed were excellent for fuel economy and ride, including inclement weather traction. What about the K&N air filter OEM replacement for the factory air filter a definite fuel economy pick up one 1 to 2 gallons per mile.
My daily driver is a silver 2004 4Runner Sport 4.7-liter V8. I bought it new, and it's been a fantastic vehicle - especially through Colorado winters. I plan to get another new one when Toyota does a redesign (maybe 2023). I've been hearing rumors of a turbo V6 for the next generation.
I too live in Wa and have a 5th gen. Nice build and truck man! I had ko2s but switched to cooper at3 because its my daily for work but ko2s do look better.
Great video. Seems like a really good dude just out loving life. Love the 4Runner too.....the perfect all-around vehicle (except for gas mileage). Lol.
awesome video! i have the same exact one except 2018. i did 265 ko2s, rsg sliders and 2.5/1.5 dobinsons lift. the sliders and lift i got during black friday sales. i refuse to pay full price for mods. lol
Is there a way to replace only the front bumper piece that is the chrome. I want it to be black, but in all the videos I see entire facelifts instead of just that one lower part of the bumper.
Nice job, well done! I have one of those among several Wranglers and the 4Runner interior LED upgrade is worth the $20.-. Also high beam 9005 LED really changed my night driving for less than $30.- : )
What a great video! I bought my 2021 4Runner Venture 01/02/2021 and have been watching many youtube videos. Your list is exactly what i want to do. Tires (Ko2) most definitely. Crossbar ill wait on my model has some that will work for now til i get the roof rack. I have gotten the ceramic coating waiting for a better day to apply. The "heavy duty steps" lol Cali raise sliders are in the cart. Debating on having them powder coat or should i DIY it myself. Already got the weather tech liners and the Rhino recovery gear. Thank for a great video and help with the decision on painting my own sliders!!!
Just moved to Charleston, SC from NJ. After my first big rain storm, I realized that I need to immediately trade my BMW 3 in for an SUV. If I get a 4Runner, should I get the snorkel ? I’m in an area with some bad road flooding
KO2's are awesome in the snow....but absolute garbage on ice. I know this for a fact as I live in Northern BC and my Jeep on KO2's can't stop worth Sh*t on ice.....
I love the trunk and have the same one in fact coincidentally. Avoid Rhino USA gear though. They don't back their products with factual data regarding testing.
You dodged a bullet not getting the fox shocks. I just traded my TRD pro back in for a 40th anniversary. The Fox shocks and struts failed ANNUALLY. Two back shocks, three times on the struts in the fronts. Final straw was when toyota basically said oh well you just got out of the initial warranty. I will never...ever buy or recommend anything Fox racing makes. A trd pro is only worth it if you are going to toss the FOX shocks and put another brand as a lift.
U named your daughter Ripley?! Awesome. I want to add a roof rack for skis and a hitch mounted bike rack. I wander if I can split down the middle the roof accoutrements to be able to mount both skis and a bike or kayak at same time?
Good reason to pick it, I bought the same model three months ago. The main reason why I bough the off-road was because it's the only model that uses a key start. We are driving 4WD we don't need a dainty push start lol. Otherwise I would have bought the pro because I liked the lunar rock color and other upgrades.
I have a silver one, I actually really like the color. It's kind of boring compared to some of the other colors offered, but the great thing about silver is that it does a good job of hiding scratches and chips. You really can't tell imperfections in the paint unless you look up close. It also doesn't really look dirty until you wash it, and realize it has a nice metallic shine to it.
I agree with Trail Runnah... it's a great color but very common. I added that small decal over the TRD Off Road badge and I may add a few more tasteful ones to make it stand out a little. It hides dust really well, that I can say.
Washington!?! I'm up north of Seattle. JUST FINALLY ordered my dream truck: 4Runner TRD Pro! Can afford to downsize, as the kids are now driving themselves around more often than not, leaving just me and the wife, and/or dogs. Any advice on finding good places to explore? I bought OnX Offroard, and can't wait to get out! Projection for delivery is 3-4 months. But I think I can make it. I gave of my last 4Runner 15-years ago (a '92 5-speed), and have regretted it ever since!
Thanks Eric. Definitely will. Probably the next one will be about offroading/overlanding comms between trucks. We plan on installing radios in both the 4Runner and my friend's Colorado. We'll show all the wiring, etc. After that there are definitely more 4Runner projects planned.
from the day I first found you, to this day I have nothing but admiration for the quality of your videos. The views you get are criminal. Absolute criminal.
LOL... it is weird. I have a three year old video about putting in a bathroom vanity... that I admit is kinda terrible... and that gets pushed out to thousands of people a month. Makes no sense from my end. RUclips is kinda weird. But I love making videos, and just putting positive stuff out into the world.
@@JasonExplainsThings trust me, you do an amazing job at making great videos about sharing positivity with the world. youtube is weird as hell. I hope you and your family is safe. Love what you do.
Did you take a look at the Falken Wildpeak AT3W when you were looking at tires? I keep seeing them compared to the Ko2. I’m picking up my 2021 4Runner in a week and the first thing I’m doing is swapping the tires but can’t decide which ones. I hear a lot of good things about the AT3W. But how do you like your Ko2?
Hey Jason, Liked and subscribed! Really enjoyed your video. Where did you find this decal seen @ 1:17 ? I would like to get a couple. Best wishes for your channel. Cheers,
Hey Jason, where abouts are you at? The Background looks similar to where I live in south central WA. Specifically the eastern part of the Columbia River Gorge.
This is a TRD Off Road. Not premium, but a few added things like the premium audio package. I didn't want the sun roof because I have a long torso and my head will hit it.
FYI 255/80/17s which the manufacturer lists at 32.8" diameter fit with zero rubbing even at full or really close to maximum articulation, front and rear. I have steel skid plates which put about 100 lbs extra over the front axle. I may experience rubbing when I install a steel bumper, however. During brake dive,n mostly. But stock suspension is doing fine for me for now.
Pros are going for 55k plus 10k mark up the had a lime rush or what ever. Sold the next day. Wife and I love the Luna rock. I didn’t at first but it grew on me. There one that runs around my town. It’s so nice but all stock boo.
I just saw a video on TFL that a new TRD Pro in that crazy lime green color was $73K. Complete madness. The TRD Off Road is almost just as capable. Once I do a suspension upgrade it will be more so. I'm loving the 4Runner more after owning it for almost a year.
I love that sticker on the off road. I just got into the suv and truck world. I want the Trd off-road instead of the pro. I don’t think the extra 10g is worth pro badges. Plus I want a sunroof does the Trd off-road come with leather or an option to get it and sunroof only comes with the Trd off road right ? I’m in Seattle wa and it’s been a pain trying to buy a 4Runner.
Great video!! I'm trying to find that canvas back that just covers the back of the rear seat. All of the ones I'm finding cover the entire back of the truck. Do you have a link for the one you purchased?
I would say that tinting your windows is the single most effective thing you can do to protect your vehicle's interior, especially if you live in a climate that gets HOT in the summer........which is pretty much the entire U.S. Even if you park in a garage at home, it's the cumulative effects of your vehicle sitting in the sun while you're at work. Had a 14 year old vehicle (bought new) that was tinted within a month of buying it. Interior was immaculate. No fading, ripping, or cracks in the dashboard.

The "heavy duty steps" lol Cali raise sliders are in the cart. Debating on having them powder coat or should i DIY it myself. Already got the weather tech liners and the Rhino recovery gear. Thank for a great video and help with the decision on painting my own sliders!!!

3:01 A beautiful shot of “cursing the gods” Very sincere looking. I totally bought it.
Excellent video my friend. I’m selling my wife right now on the rock sliders.... or the “family/kid steps” lol. Thanks
Awesome! Yeah they're great. I'm relieved my paint job actually turned out good.
Just moved to Charleston, SC from NJ. After my first big rain storm, I realized that I need to immediately trade my BMW 3 in for an SUV. If I get a 4Runner, should I get the snorkel ? I’m in an area with some bad road flooding
Do you secure that plastic tub in the back with anything so if you brake hard it doesn't fly forward?
A ratchet strap.
My moms giving me her 2016 SR5 tforce package. Its pretty sick
Great video. You can do all those things to an SR5 premuim which I just picked up new. X series with the Trd tires. Stock they can go a lot places.
Crazy, but yeah the Off Road trim is by far the way to go. I feel the same about the Tacoma as well.
Yes! Working on it and improving it yourself is the best part of owning a vehicle.
Should have put a 2 inch lift and 33 inch tires……wasted that cash. The small tire size is for gas mileage. 33s won’t rub.
Sweet truck though!
U named your daughter Ripley?! Awesome.
I want to add a roof rack for skis and a hitch mounted bike rack. I wander if I can split down the middle the roof accoutrements to be able to mount both skis and a bike or kayak at same time?
First Mod on non-led 4runners should be new headlights. These things have dangerously crappy headlights stock
Yeah either headlights or just replacement LED bulbs. 👍
Thanks for the tip on the roof rack. I’ve been looking for an upgrade from the stock rack but not a full blown overland style rack.
I would stay away from the front fairing crossbar. It scratched up my paint pretty bad.
Husky liners are LIFETIME Warrantied... Weather Tech are not.
Just bought the metallic grey Toyota sr5 4Runner.. 2wd drive and lovin it !!
Good reason to pick it, I bought the same model three months ago. The main reason why I bough the off-road was because it's the only model that uses a key start. We are driving 4WD we don't need a dainty push start lol. Otherwise I would have bought the pro because I liked the lunar rock color and other upgrades.
Love video👏🏼👏🏼. Carry almost same you carry. (Lexus_luthor14 IG)
Take care of your Toyota, and you will be able to inherit it to your grandchildren.
Dude...those stickers on the side OFF ROAD lettering...where did you order them from? Cheers!
Where did you get the sticker on top of the “TRD OFF ROAD” badge? Very cool.
I was looking at buying a new one just like yours in silver r u happy with the color?
Just bought a black one two weeks ago with tan interior...I love it
@@financialfreedomflippers700 congrats
I have a silver one, I actually really like the color. It's kind of boring compared to some of the other colors offered, but the great thing about silver is that it does a good job of hiding scratches and chips. You really can't tell imperfections in the paint unless you look up close. It also doesn't really look dirty until you wash it, and realize it has a nice metallic shine to it.
I agree with Trail Runnah... it's a great color but very common. I added that small decal over the TRD Off Road badge and I may add a few more tasteful ones to make it stand out a little. It hides dust really well, that I can say.
@@westcoast708 thanks
My first mod, spray the under carriage with a good wax based under coating.
Good idea
Just wondering if you have any updates on mpg and snow performance over the last few months?
Washington!?! I'm up north of Seattle. JUST FINALLY ordered my dream truck: 4Runner TRD Pro! Can afford to downsize, as the kids are now driving themselves around more often than not, leaving just me and the wife, and/or dogs. Any advice on finding good places to explore? I bought OnX Offroard, and can't wait to get out! Projection for delivery is 3-4 months. But I think I can make it. I gave of my last 4Runner 15-years ago (a '92 5-speed), and have regretted it ever since!
OnX is great. That’ll have tons of trail suggestions. Congrats!
Thanks for sharing your ideas. Hoping that you will post more 4Runner content. Greetings from Yellowknife 🇨🇦
Thanks Eric. Definitely will. Probably the next one will be about offroading/overlanding comms between trucks. We plan on installing radios in both the 4Runner and my friend's Colorado. We'll show all the wiring, etc. After that there are definitely more 4Runner projects planned.
Where did you get that mountain sticker that goes on top of the of TRD Off Road badge on the side of the vehicle?
1. Widdle wadder
2. Tactical fleshlight
3. 36" lift
4. 100% tint
5. "Shaggin' Wagon" vanity license plate
6. Front seats delete
You forgot truck nuts!
Give away the recovery strap and switch to a Matt’s Off-road Recovery Rope w/ two Soft Shackles.
Yeah, we have that kinetic rope now. It’s great. Pulled several people out of mud with it.
from the day I first found you, to this day I have nothing but admiration for the quality of your videos.
Loving the KO2s. I’d buy them again. I’ve heard good things about wildpeaks as well.
how tall is the guy driving the 4runner with the sunroof ? seems pretty tight...
Pro dip noco is overpriced dog ass get the audew jump starter it's smaller and can stand up to daily technician use
Where did you get that cool mountain sticker that goes on top of the TRD side logos?
Hey Jason, Liked and subscribed! Really enjoyed your video. Where did you find this decal seen @ 1:17 ? I would like to get a couple. Best wishes for your channel. Cheers,
It was from a seller on Etsy I believe.
I saw a great 3day dmb concert in Quincy, Washington. At the gorge.
Just got my 2023 TRD Offroad Premium, thanks for the advice.
Hey Jason, where abouts are you at? The Background looks similar to where I live in south central WA. Specifically the eastern part of the Columbia River Gorge.
I’m in Central WA. 👍
Is this the TRD OFF-ROAD PREMIUM ? I bought the exact one. I like doing my own lifts, fox shocks etc…well like you said it’s FUN 🤩.
Yeah the Off Road Premium has a sun roof and leather.
Great video!! I'm trying to find that canvas back that just covers the back of the rear seat. All of the ones I'm finding cover the entire back of the truck. Do you have a link for the one you purchased?
Should be in the description. 👍
Great video! I just got my first 4Runner and I’ll definitely be copying some of your ideas
Pimp the carpeting first. GO WITH THE SHAG.
Nice video👏🏻
What do you do for living?
How much are the payments?
This is my dream truck, one day I could afford it.
I’m a video editor and RUclips is my side gig. Payments aren’t RUclips’s business. 😉 But I paid MSRP ($40K) with a good down payment.
1 add Gas, 2 add dog , 3 remove GF, 4 tint windows, 5 add new GF , 6 new tires , 7 lights
