Dime learned most if not all these songs by ear considering there was no internet and Tabs were few and far between. Shows his dedication and hard work he put into learning the guitar.

Dime was really open to teaching people his songs. Can you imagine his YT channel if he had lived on? 1 playlist for pranks, and 1 for song tutorials. His videos of teaching guitar pre-date YT by a few years. And the best thing is he never charged a cent for it. If it were anyone else they would probably package it and slap a price tag on it.

One of the greatest and a real out of this world person but humble and down to earth at the same time. Getcha pull. That's the fun he had. You know it's true...

Listening to this has made me smile a few times, because of some goofy things mentioned in these comments and just funny moments. I went to school with Darrell and became friends, and even though I played, my level of sucktitude at guitar was pretty unmatched. Honestly, I was all show...lol...I looked cool playing, but the guitar talent was severely lacking. Still, he always encouraged me to keep working at it, and even lied to me to keep my hopes alive. He is missed as a badass, but more as a friend.
Regarding Tabs: I NEEDED tabs to learn songs, so I had some harder to find/f'ing expensive tab books. When I heard him playing 'Let It Go' on here it made me smile. I had the tab book from Def Leppard itself, so he'd give me shit about how I'd play parts of it. I told him that I was playing the parts right. Anyway, one day we were playing and drinking, and he mentioned it again. I busted out my tab book and threw it to him. He started digging through it and when he got to 'Let It Go', he just said "Well shit, I've been playing it wrong this entire time. Fuck it, I like my way better." We laughed and I said, "I do too."
Dean Guitars: I saw where someone listed stores Darrell worked at, and there was also a shop on S. Cooper in a strip mall where Bigfoot Subs was located. I remember he told me to come in so he could hook me up with a cooler guitar. He was pushing me hard to buy a Dean and I was like "No way man! Nobody plays Dean except Sammy Hagar. I'd rather spend my money on a cool looking B.C. Rich." He said, "You're crazy, but go ahead and be Captain B.C. Bitch!"
It was always cool to me that Dean became his signature look.
Solos: Yes, he would learn every album 'guitar solos' back when bands would include those on albums. Everyone knew how well he played 'Eruption' and he would show it off when just f'ing around at someone's keg party. One night, we're on the way and he says that he was going to blow everybody's mind and play it backwards that night if he ended up playing. He ends up playing in the garage of someone's parents house and played it backwards, and wondering why nobody's minds were being blown. Truth is, only a few people recognized parts of it. Then he says to everybody that he's going to play 'Eruption' and then he'd play it backwards when he finished. Everyone was into it after that, but I think he realized that people didn't appreciate music at the level he did. I think he did the same with Quiet Riot's 'Battle Axe' also.
He was just such a fun, nice, and friendly person, with just a wicked sense of humor. And some of those photos in his show gear at the beginning is EXACTLY how he'd dress in high school.

He was brilliant from the get to there’s no doubt but back then it wasn’t really uncommon for people to be decent at guitar because this was before distractions like the internet, smartphones, really good video games etc so people had endless free time to just play guitar all day. And Dime was no exception and he ran with it and gave us the great music we still listen to everyday

    • @ianspeckmaier9565
      @ianspeckmaier9565 3 года назад +17

@@trendkill3333 I partly agree and partly disagree. There were still distractions, just different ones. Dime put in work combined with a natural aptitude and the result is greatness. He could have chosen not to work as hard but he had the passion and discipline to go above and beyond. There's plenty of modern players who are crazy good, and would also cite Dimebag, RR, EVH, as influences. For some the modern resources we have are a distraction to spend all day on the internet, others use them as tools to get even better.... it's all about how you apply yourself. Spoken as a self-admitted lazy player working on getting better! RIP Dime and all other legends that paved the way 🤘

If that is correct, I'm glad that I quit playing when I did. I was a lead vocalist in a Rock n' Metal band and I would pick up either of the rhythm or the lead guitar player's guitars and fiddle around trying to emulate what I saw them doing.
It's funny looking back at it now. When someone who you respect as a good (or Really good, maybe even great) guitarist watches you and then tells the next person who sees you playing that "He's terrible, he couldn't play his way out of a wet paper bag", it DESTROYED my confidence. I never wanted anyone else to ever hear how horrible I was.
Words have consequences and in my case, my "friend" laying waste to my confidence kept me from spending a lot of time and money on something that I was never going to be any good at doing. Trying to decide if I should thank him or just let him know that he alone had that much of an impact on my psyche. And I know that I could have practiced 15 hours a day and would have maybe improved, but I know this much: I would never, not EVER, EVER, NEVER would have played in front of THAT GUY again! And here's the real irony in the whole thing: that same guy had a really hard time for about 25-30 years of playing before he could play with the confidence that he had when he was playing something that I was encouraging him to do! I would be like, That's amazing, play that and add this or get rid of that. He couldn't play as well in front of a crowd as well as he could play in front of me!!
      Go figure, huh.
Dime fuckin ROCKED HIS ASS OFF!!
      "1...2...3...
      VAN HALEN"!!!
That's what the four of them would say before they ran out on stage. Look it up.

@@chitownbluesy thanks for sharing. Not everyone is meant to be a virtuoso but anybody can sound great and play in a band if they practice. You most definitely could of did something. I sucked but I sucked so bad I didn't know I sucked lol. I was lucky to play in an era were the popular songs were easy and leads were 'gay' ... Until bands like Shadow fall avenged 7fold and even the Darkness made them cool... Then guitar hero came out. After about several months of playing live we won band competitions. Instead of being flashy I tried to be smart and know my place in the band (best rhythm section in area). I was one of the few that could actually play funk in addition to jazzy stuff, metal, classic rock, hip hop. On thing I regret is not taking lessons... Also ignoring wrist, elbow pain

My Guitar teacher in 1984 said to me 50% was the look. I had it. Metal hair, Ear Rings. the clothes and the "Look" he called it. Our first lesson was Van Halen doing the solo for Beat It. This is after 5 years of listening to Van Halen since the first album. He was all about the look. It did do me well for a short time.

I was there. And if i remember correctly it wasnt a cassette recorder. Matt Riley turned Dime onto a portable 4 track that recorded onto cassettes. Like the 1st little tascam ever available. We thought that was the coolest thing ever, having means to send lessons and backing tracks home with students and to create on the fly. I probably have more of those tapes somewhere, if they havent turned to dust! That was along time ago!

One of the great things about Darrell was that he recognized a great riff no matter the genre or style and its evident in the songs i described above. He wasnt all about the Metal all the time he had a good ear for picking up good riffs.
