That story about Megadeth proves how much of an absolute legend Dimebag was. The thing he'd dreamt about his entire life was ripe for the taking, and he declined the offer because his brother couldn't come with him. That's loyalty

Is that what he dreamed about? The thing about Megadeth is that they are barely real band. They are Dave Mustaine, sometimes Dave Ellefson, and session guys. Dime would’ve been part of a big record, but he wouldn’t have been anyone’s focus, and he wouldn’t likely have been in the band for a long time. Pantera taking off was a way better situation for him even if they hadn’t managed to blow up as big as they did
@@monkeyballs512 Well Megadeths classic lineup is considered to be Mustaine, Elleffson, Marty Friedman and Nick Menza. And while Pantera blowing up was much better fortune for him, especially considering its rumoured Dave Mustaine is an absolute pain in the arse to work with, there was no guaranteeing it was gonna work out. Plus, if he joined Megadeth he could have made a name for himself and launched a career off there, like how Randy Rhoads went from Quiet Riot to Ozzy Osbourne

As a guitarists with a drummer brother that was in a band together for years their story always tears me up. I just avoid it. Heart breaking.
Edit - I should clarify by saying that the bond that is built from creating music together is strong and when you couple that with actual blood...there's a love and connection that is hard to describe.

I've heard a wide range of numbers topping out at about 1.5 million. However, I believe Pantera were the opening act of a long festival and weren't that well known yet. So, during the Pantera set, I could see it being half a million but exploding to over 1 million by the end with AC/DC and Metallica.
I saw Pantera in the late 90’s in Anchorage, AK during the RtS tour. It was the most wild concert I’ve ever been to.

Yeah man Pantera goes hard as fuck! I saw them way back in 2022 during their reunion tour in my early 20s and I could say for them being some middle aged white guys as was majority of the crowd they rocked out and kept that energy from their prime. Which was extra special given the timing of the show with the previous couple years concerts taken indefinitely from us unsure if they'd ever come back, as Im sure you'll never forget those trying times being old enough to remember those times as well, so it was hands down one of the most wild concerts of my life! 🤘🏻

I'd imagine it was! Because I saw Sepultura, Alice in Chains and Ozzy for my VERY FIRST concert EVER!! And THAT was absolutely incredibly amazing and completely unforgettable!!! I EVEN managed to get Ozzy's attention as well as the whole arenas!! By accident TOO!!!😂😄💀

‘95 for me; growing up in ETX it was like collecting Pokémon’s meeting guys that worked with them before their big break and or people that were still friends with them.
Almost got to hang out with Vinnie Paul for my 16th birthday, bassist of my band at the time was friends with him and the owner of Murphy’s Music Store.

Sorry bro. SA, TX boy here. I started following and seeing them live since 92 before people really knew who they were. I was 13 at the time. I've seen them around 15 times and also had to privilege to hang and party with the boys. Some of the greatest shows of my life.

I remember the day that Dime was killed,I got drunk and listened to pantera all day. I have to admit that there was some crying too. Dime was and still is my idol,love that dude.
I had just come back to DFW from a trip where I had gone to the AlRosa the week before; it took me several days to process the 6 o'clock news that Wednesday!
Same here. I shed my share of tears when Dime was taken from us. Same with Vinnie. Their music is so powerful and can never be imitated. I still feel the loss to this day.
I saw Hell Yeah when they toured after Dime's death... and saw Vinnie, it was awesome.

Pantera will always be that band we will always have to say... "What if??" I grew up in Dallas and had the privilege of watching these guys from their very early days. I was just teenage kid and being in the music scene myself I was able to call these guys my brothers. They were larger than life and I will always remember doing shot after shot backstage at the galaxy club about 2001-2002 with Dime, Vin and Billy MIlano (S.O.D.). When Dime was killed by a maniac it was over... Vinnie knew that and it eventually killed him as well. Those two were tight. Remember the Good Times! Getcha Pull!!!

@@rsohlich1 Yes... I feel that way as well. Dime and Vin were both extra awesome. Just like your best friend in the world and you just met them 5 seconds ago. I've been in the same room with Phil but never really talked to him. He was arrogant but he was the front man. I think he's changed a bit over the years but people always said Phil was Phil and that was it. A part of Dallas, TX died with those guys.
@@mattharriss3835 I saw them in Raleigh North Carolina back in 98 or so (OzzFest), and I consider that to be one of the highlights of my short time here on Earth! I'll never forget that day in the fall of 04 when a friend told me Dime died. I later learned that it was a Marine from Camp Legeune (right down the road) that shot him. My only question is why? I can honestly say, as a guitarist myself, that a part of me perished that day as well. L/R \m/

Yes sir the Galaxy Club, Orbit Room, Trees played them back in 96-99 punk band called Stickpin. Great times. Pantera was already huge and we loved them. They were like this constant energetic inspiration to keep going. Also ran into them at Cabaret Royal lol (another long story) Locals: Jibe, Doosu, Slow Roosevelt, Caulk, Stinkbug so many great Dallas memories my God....dude in the band then turned me on to Ugly Mustard and Course of Empire who I thought was awesome like NIN.....in a Jersey boy, but I love TX and always will. 🤘PANTERA🤘

@@aplus1080 I started with Vulgar Display of Power, but they were already playing cowboys from hell stuff. The far beyond driven, great southern trend kill. Then I saw them at the first Oz fest, which they put on the live album. Early 90's were a great time to be in high school!

I definitely feel for phil when it comes to chronic pain. I can definitely relate. When you are in constant pain it changes you. But he should called everything off and got himself fixed up.

@@nutterinherbutter5080 it was, Phil didn't want to take a year or two to relax and get the surgery, because far beyond just reached number one on the charts. He had to live up to what the world saw him as, a "superman"
@@sarcasticallyrearranged because there’s a high probability of you not bouncing back from surgery and needing other surgeries. It’s a long and painful recovery. It was 1995-2000 and medicine what it is today and today they put off back surgery. He has DDD.
I am literally privileged, because I got to see Pantera in 1998.
I'm from Europe, so it's not like we could travel several hundred miles just to go see them on any gig in the States.

I don’t care what anyone says I love Phil cause after six lower back surgeries and substance abuse myself I’ve gone thru the same painful Hell he went thru. I lost everything due to trying to numb horrific pain. And it changes you for the worst until you start recovering from it all. Phil will always be apart of my life thru his music and his struggles and I have zero hate for him but massive respect.

Pantera was stuck in Ireland after September 11, 2001. They were frightened. That didn't help either. I saw them live in June 2001. I am blessed for that.
Chronic pain and addiction are such a tragedy for so many people. It’s a shame that these people: Phil, Dime, and Vinnie couldn’t share in the recovery Phil was able to make. Their deaths are part of how to understand literary tragedy. Phil attempted to endure the unendurable and learned that receiving help is the remedy and freedom he needed. In the time it took him to accept help, he lost his mind on drugs which caused him to act upon extremely hurtful ideations. His hardcore attitude and addiction were killing him, and no one wanted him to feel so forced that he would destroy himself. So, he wound up inflicting that pain and misguided bad feelings upon them to escape the band. That is a regret borne from poor executive function in the brain. Then, he finally got help through surgery, and then he finally started figuring things out and learning how to live without drugs because it was finally possible-prior, the pain fueled the addiction’s imposition on him. So, he got to have that process of healing and growth, but the two with the biggest social influence that he hurt in that process wound up dying very early deaths. The most beloved and charismatic member of the band wound up shot to death because Phil left the band and talked shit during the long stretch it took him to accept help. A few years later, Vinnie died less horrifyingly ironically than his brother; it was sudden heart failure. I am really happy that most people seem to recognize that this story is a true tragedy rather than anything else.

This was a heavy video. The ending really hits hard. I believe what Phil was saying about his being a wounded animal lashing out. The whole way those relationships ended is pure tragedy.

I’ve been waiting for one of these deep dive documentary videos. These videos are why I subscribed and fell in love with this channel aside from the regular news on the rock community.
Phil genuinely loved his band mates. He genuinely loved Pantera. Unfortunately he had drug addiction and severe pain get in the way of what was essentially reality. He was in a constant hazy fog. If the severe pain and addiction wasn't a factor, Pantera would be alive and screaming today.

I was only able to see Damage Plan live one month before he got shot. They played 3 Pantera songs at the end of their list and I've never seen a crowd go as crazy as that time.
I’m with you. I never got the priveledge of seeing Pantera.I saw damageplan in 2004 earthday birthday in orlando. They also ended the set with Walk and it was the one and only time i ever got to see Dime and Vinnie on stage. I still remember just watching. I was usually in the pit but as a guitar player i had to just watch Dime do his thing.

In 1984, I saw Pantera warm-up for Germany's Accept in a Killeen/Ft. Hood,TX bar, not knowing who they were. Pantera was phenomenal that night & bought their LP at merch booth that night!! I have close-up stage pics of that show, to this day. I'll never forget it!!
Its a sad story man. The mighty Pantera fizzled to nothing all because they couldn't communicate with each other. I honestly feel bad for Phil he really was in such a deep pit. Isolation is a major sign of depression or struggle. Dime and Vince tried but ultimately had no choice but to move on. Poor Rex was caught in the middle of it all.
I miss Pantera . I saw them quite a few times in the 90s. Iam glad I had the privilege to see them live so many times. There albums are great but the live shows were so intense it was crazy. Shows like that do not really exist anymore. I thank the metal gods I was born during that era. It was a blast. RIp dime and vinnie much love.

I lost track of how many times I saw Pantera live in the 90's and once in 2000. I believe it was a total of about 8 or 9 times. They were definitely a force to be reckoned with. They dominated metal in the 90's. I really wish they could've stayed together. Who knows what other albums we'd have .

I feel lucky to have seen Pantera a handful of times in the 90s. I caught a guitar pick from Dime at a show in Germany when I was stationed there. I have it in a little frame in my jam room.
Pantera. I'm surprised they lasted as long as they did. They remind me of that old Bad Company song: "Shooting Star". And thats exactly what they were; burning bright at 25k mph, then burning out just as fast. RIP Dime and Vinnie.
I 1st watched PANTERA in MTV Headbangers Ball '92. With their MV "Walk", "Mouth of War", & "Cemetery Gates".
Then by 1994. PANTERA became a word-of-mouth in our highschool campus.

After Dime was shoot that was it for Pantera Dime and Vinny Paul was the life and heart of Pantera
Saw Pantera in 99 open for Black Sabbath on Sabbath's Reunion tour. One of the best shows I've seen and Pantera were incredible. I'll never forget my memories of Dime shredding it up infront of 30 thousand plus people. It's still hard to believe Dime and Vinnie are both gone. Dime's death is one of the greatest tragedies in music history. What happened was totally insane in the worst way possible.

Phil blaming his back for not being able to make music with Dime and Vinny is BS when all he did was make music in other bands during that time. My buddy bought a shirt and asked Phil if he could sign it. Phil just took the shirt and never gave it back. I love Pantera but we all know why things went the way they did.

I seen them play three times in Houston, Texas from 1992- 96. One was a pretty small show on Houston's Northside. The best concerts I've ever been to was Pantera.

I've got everything Pantera ever did including the pre-Anselmo Metal Magic. Drag the Waters, Walk, A New Level, Suicide Note Pt 1, This Love and all my other favourite songs of theirs still get cranked in my car today. They're all through my RUclips playlists as well so there's no escaping them when driving with me🤘🏻😈

I agree. They took the time to acknowledge me several times in a sea of fans. Most of the time I was the only dark face there at an in store appearance or at a show. I was impressed that in the fog of fame touring and partying they actually remembered me. Pretty impressive. They were the best at what they did.

I remember Pantera playing at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin sometime in the late 90s, I think it was the late 90s? But it was at Ozzfest.
I’ve probably been to about 50 concerts, I can’t say it was the best show, but it was definitely A one of a kind show. And feel lucky that I was able to see them. Definitely the loudest concert I have ever attended.
The fact that a reunion is occurring is wild. We have to take what we can get at this point

I saw Pantera the first time ever when they were touring w/Coal chamber & Anthrax. Man that concert was Goddamn Electric.
Certainly one of my favorite bands of all time seen them twice down here in Palm Beach Florida one time for the far beyond driven and the next time was Reinventing Steel.
These videos only focus on the bad. There is a million more good things about this band and it’s members. God bless pantera for creating the soundtrack of my youth. RIP abbot brothers. Thank you Rex and Phillip for the continuation of killer music

I don't know man, I watched the 25th anniversary of Down Nola live stream that down did, and Phil's voice sounded pretty damn good, like he had been practicing and shit. He was hitting all the right notes.
Hes just gotta do different things now, but he still has a unique and worthy voice.

What to take away? Phil thinks he's in REO Speedwagon, and Pantera was so burnt out, they burned up, but if Axl & Slash can reunite, any group can, as long as everyone is alive, unfortunately Pantera is no longer able.

5:42. Timeline is questionable. Grunge was a virtual unknown when CFH was released in mid 1990. If Pantera were to have followed that trend, it would have been with VDOP.
Completely agree. Those songs were written at the latest in 1989 and grunge had not hit until a few years later. Edit: Meant the latest not earliest.

I saw them on the reinventing the steel tour , it was them and slayer ,i forget who opened the show but both pantera and slayer put on a great show and i am so glad i got to see it.
White Zombie and Pantera was the metal tour of the 90s everyone wanted. Miss them days.

The band took a planned break to release side projects by all 4 members. Half the band wanted a few months off & the other half wanted a few years off. All 4 struggled with substance abuse issues and their was a massive communication breakdown then a murder happened.

There will never be another band like pantera..ever...I saw them live in 1992 in support of megadeth here in Glasgow scotland ..Best concert ever....with megadeth at their peak and pantera just about to explode ..awesome ...it just saddens me that there can never be a full reunion of the band
How cool would it have been to be there to see the birth of the riffs that became CFH? Even now, it boggles my mind to think that between Power Metal and CFH, Pantera gave birth to a completely new metal sound.

Some of Phil's lyrics on Far Beyond Driven and Trendkill are practically a cry for help. It's unclear to me how could the Abbott brothers just ignore that something bad is going on with their band mate and then act like they were "shocked and embarrassed". The man practically gave up his health for the love of music and the band. Yet he obviously got no help from his bandmates when he really needed it. No wonder that he resorted to drugs and alcohol once again.
I was fortunate to see Pantera front row at the Aragon Ballroom in 97!!!! One of the best shows ever. A reunion with Phil And Rex would be cool, but No one can ever replace Dimebag and Vinnie!!! R.I.P. Keep Their Memories Alive My Fellow MetalHeads!!! 🤘
