*Here's to anyone who wants to learn how to play like Dime:* Get his techniques down, but it doesn't have to be perfect, then just have fun and play from your gut. Just do what feels right. Have fucking fun! Honestly, THIS is how Dime wanted other guitarists to be. Don't worry about messing up or just hitting one note wrong, just keep going and have fun. It really does NOT get much more simple than that. RIP to the legend...
Even if you play other stuff love the dive bombs isn’t the pushing backwards of the tremolo called something different…I like the sound of picking every nite up and down…hammer ons sounds ok but slopppy
All of dime’s riffs were legendary because he wrote most on the shitter, which all of you know is in close proximity to the shower, which is where all the greatest ideas come from. If he could have wrote tunes in the shower, he would have made tunes only audible to the gods themselves... RIP DIME & VINCE!
Dimebag is truly one of the greats. But not just for his chops, but the heart that drove it all. That guy lived life like no other. I have never heard of anyone say that he treated them bad, said anything bad or anything negative. It was always "what's your name? Well let's do a shot William Smith and raise some hell!" That was his MO. Total stranger? Not in 2 minutes. No, in two minutes we're going to be best buddies.
Zakk said it perfect he is Eddie, Randy, Ace (due to his love of Kiss not in reach of that ballpark Zakk kinda made clear) and Santa mixed in a blender!
I feel like Dime has always sort of been a slightly underrated guitarist. Like people like him, but he's always like second or third behind other "shredders". More people need to see/hear this dude's insane talent! He needs to be recognized more...

43 year old here. Really appreciate the video I consider myself a potential student. I started playing a few years ago, just a self taught/utube videos guy. I was always a jock but as I get older it’s really great to learn something I can approach with the same intensity that I approached athletics with. It’s something you can do when you’re 80 and it wouldn’t be possible without people like you.
some reason i almost get to tears when i do dime stuff. i know how much he loved guitar and i luv it soo much too and i just think what a soul he was and what music he cudda put out. uggh man. RIP dime
All I keep thinking is how funny it would be to have Dime there with you to comment in his own Texas slang on what you're doing, since he never really thought about the theory or musical notation involved in his styling. Well done!
Dime has a video where he explains how he does his harmonic dives without picking. He flicks the string as he dives the bar and then hits the harmonic on the way back up.
I just saw I video where Dime explains how he usually does the squeal. Mute all but the G string with your left hand, flick the G string with a finger on the left hand, divebomb the whammy, grab a harmonic, and then lift it up. He did it so fast you don't even hear the divebomb. However, it's important to make it sound exactly like Dime. Don't mean to be rude, just repeating what Dime said himself.
I've only watched the first 5 minutes and this has already helped me. I'd consider myself a beginner guitarist that's stuck in a rut. This video has so many great exercises that I will continue to come back for. I only stopped after 5 minutes because I tried the "pick to hammer on combos" technique/exercise and my pinky is killing me.
I remember Dime walking down the row of fans waiting to get in to see Pantera as the opening act for Skid Row in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was saying hi to everyone and asked, “Are you guys gonna rock us tonight?!” They definitely blew away Skid Row! Thanks for the lesson, Mike…
I'm practicing Dimebag licks and riffs and I just learned that it's pretty hard to do those super fast legato stuff he did. I always thought legato was somewhat cheating but it's so much harder than I thought to do at that speed.
For dime squeals you do a random pull off so you have an open G string with your left hand , dip the bar , catch the harmonic on the way up, continue pulling up on the bar for the squeals. It's a fast motion. There's a video of dime explaining it. Just doing a natural harmonic isn't correct.
I thought the same as well - I haven't seen any videos of dime doing a simple harmonic grab but always his squeal (hammer on G third fret and catch the harmonic on the 5th fret is a signature move)
Dimebag was such a unique player, his technique was beyond crazy!! Perhaps you should also do a video on the techniques of Glenn Tipton and KK Downing of Judas Priest
Besides doing a video on Glenn & KK I would love to see a video about Gary Moore's techniques too. Every artist technique video I have watched on this channel has been great and helpful.
If you wanted to know you were playing cemetery gates main riff in the wrong position. The opening chugs are right but dime moves up the neck and uses the A and E strings 7th fret position to play that riff, of course it doesn't matter much but if you like doing that one off massive bend he puts in then it easier to do in that position.
Just found this channel for the first time. I like the teaching style. I played for years then didn't for years and I'm trying to get back to it now. Thanks for making the vids!
The-Art-Of-Guitar You are a very good teacher. You have a knack for this that supersedes anyone else that I have seen trying to teach guitar on RUclips.
Great video overall, I just missed one of his coolest, unique technique, what he called playing it Texas style (aka the right way): instead of picking a note, you pick a half or full note below and bend up to it (think Revolution is my name intro). This video slightly touched on this around 26:20, but there's more to it
Thank you for sharing this video. I really like how you explaine everything, in proper and technical terms. This will take some time to nail these techniques. Always glad when someone is inspired by the master of metal guitar, Dimebag Darrell Abbott! Peace and RESPECT 👊
Great lesson. Seems like you're not a guy that spent a lot of time imitating Dime so you bring a fresh perspective into his technique. Very cool. Thanks for taking the time to do something cool.

There are lots of picking techniques like his upward strokes that are really necessary for a particular song to work. Dime's a genius the greatest heavy metal guitarist of all time.

Lol one that isn't legal tender as well lol what is it again? An old penny or a six pence piece or something.. Lol I can't afford strings as it is, lol.
actually during recording, he was pretty meticulous. I remember reading interview from Terry Date who produced 3 Pantera records saying that Dime was so neurotic about recording process that he didn't give up until he can play exactly the same in all of 3 or 4 takes (for multi tracking rhythm part). Terry said he didnt recommend actually playing exactly the same all the time just to create this thickness when overlaid.
8:47 Yeah I know what you mean! I discovered it by just messing around, it happens when you pick right where a harmonic would be on that string, for example if you pick right above the 12th fret on an open string.
Dime dives the bar, flicks the open string with his left hand, as it's dipped and when he pulls up the bar, taps the harmonic on the string he's making scream so it has a further motion to grow and longer the squeal. Everything else was bloody brilliant!
Really like your way of instructing and your explanations are easy to follow also. I like the fact that, while studying for this, my fave Metal git-fiddle-ist has you intrigued and a bit captivated! That's good shit! You are a pretty sikk axe-slinger yourself, by the way. Keep up the killer work!

Fun stuff. Ever do fretted cords with picked harmonics while using palm mutes during an arpeggio? This is awesome watching all these techniques I've been doing since the 80's. You explain it so well.
I'm diggin your videos man. I just picked guitar playing back up after about a 10 year break... been struggling but these videos are helping me get back in the swing. Keep em coming! Don't know if you've done one or not but a Mark Tremonti techniques video could be fun

Can you do the guitar techniques of Kerry King and Trey Azagthoth? There are some unique things that they do that are quite interesting. Thanks for the video!
Dime bag will always be in our hearts a mutual friend and I were very affected when he was assassinated wheel every dime bag thank you Jesse for the introduction to key grip friends 4ever
It never ceases to amaze me how Dimebag never practiced in the sense of practicing. He always had fun while learning and that is how one should approach learning techniques imho
Great video! Thanks! In one video I saw someone asked Dime how he does the whammy bar stuff and he was showing the guy and the guy was asking for more details and Dime just said "man you just gotta go for it." and I dunno I always remember that when I'm trying to learn something new and its true. Sometimes you just gotta go for it, and sometimes you wont get it and sometimes you will.
On the divebomb/power term harmonics, if you want two get one of the truly authentic Dimebag sounds. Try left hand muting (let your thumb climb over the top muting the lower/ thicker E,,A,D what your first and second finger catch the high E, and B)say all of the strings except for the g string, use your ring /3rd finger to do a pull off as your picking hand plays/lightly taps any of the harmonics as you flip the whammy bar back pulling it back, you get those haunting blended shrills the stand your hair on ends leaves butterfly courses in your guts. If you put a bit of the wah wah, or octivizer peddle on top of it people will think you are channeling Dime bag. Will after a bit of wood shedding it, and it flows fourth what seems like effortlessly. It took me a few days to pull off this technique, but it didn't come out whole until like a mouth later when I slammed some brutal attitude into it, that was when it truly felt whole. Hope this helps someone else get the same feeling I got that night and every time since.
I seen that in a 2007 or 2008 revolver mag when I was like 13 and fantasized about that exact guitar then and haven't thought about it for years lol seeing this crammed me into a time machine and blasted me back💯
wonderful lesson! P.S. make sure that detergent is completely rinsed out in the wash,if not, the itching will drive you crazy all over, happens now and again.
I started playing guitar because my sister brought home Metallica master of puppets... I started to LOVE the guitar when I saw cemetery gates on head bangers ball when I was in 7th or 8th grade!
I've always thought Dimebags sound was particularly cool sounding but I never really have done a deep dive into what he does. Pantera was just one of those bands that i liked the sound of but never really listened to them. This video was well done. Thanks
The Phrygian scale makes everything sound like spanish/flamenco, that's why it's so awesome. BTW you must know EVH was one of his big inspirations. Listen to oldskool Eddie and you can practically play all of Dimebags stuff.
Could you do an Eric Johnson episode? There isn’t much about him and you explain things very well where I can understand, and EJ is one of my heroes! Thank you for doing RR, Dime, and Clapton, other rock gods!
Another easy way to do divebombs is to dump the bar slightly, tap the harmonic, and rip it. It will give you a lower starting point, make the strings slinky so you can tap them easier, and allows you to get much higher harmonics then starting off at the normal point
everything he did had that sour feel and being a Dime fan that's his word and sound no less you just spent 30 of those minutes showing most tricks he had to pull this awesome feel he invented, the most underrated MAN in general in history.... getcha pull

Nobody can learn to play a fkn guitar like Dime lol.
Exactly this, he mentioned when he would go on stage he was just jamming. It seemed like it was always about having a good time for him.
I don't think Dime could have said it any better himself.
If you play guitar and love Pantera, it's hard to not "go crazy" with the divebombs.
Just ask Syn
I don't have a whammy. It's painful to not be able to go crazy with it.

Awesome man. Thanks. Yeah this was a tough one but we'll worth it. :)
Can you do the guitar techniques of Kerry King and Trey Azagthoth?
There are some unique things that they do that are quite interesting.
Thanks for the video!
Bro your really good at teaching playing and talking I'm impressed. That's a sick guitar and sound set up you got going on to.
Amazing Mike!!! Thanks for share this techniques. By the way, awesome DIME guitar!
Dime bag will always be in our hearts a mutual friend and I were very affected when he was assassinated wheel every dime bag thank you Jesse for the introduction to key grip friends 4ever
Definitely going to watch this one a thousand times
Can you Do one for Buckethead?
Vortex Lucas most definitely needs to be top comment.
Yes this woukd be amazing
There is these weird things about that weirdo...he wears a KFC bucket on his head and makes 300+ albums. Thats 280 too many.
You obviously have never known someone with crippling social anxiety
Rick Feith :p
Loved that lesson and love Dime so much love your method of teaching easy to grasp without confusing books lol
One should never play the 3rd straight in 'the blues' or similar - always that slight bend to imply the ambiguous major. :)
+roger weafer HEhe.Thanks for the tip. I had a bit of itchy boob that night. :)
Thanks
One of my best guitarist ..and loved to see his techniques too
You sounded great playing these. Sounding killer dude
The Phrygian scale makes everything sound like spanish/flamenco, that's why it's so awesome. BTW you must know EVH was one of his big inspirations. Listen to oldskool Eddie and you can practically play all of Dimebags stuff.
im very impressed with your channel and will be interrogating your website as i want to start learning guitar
Could you do an Eric Johnson episode? There isn’t much about him and you explain things very well where I can understand, and EJ is one of my heroes! Thank you for doing RR, Dime, and Clapton, other rock gods!
Excellent dude
Got some inspiration back
Great lesson, thank you.
Much love for showing ppl this
What a killer lesson, thank you bro!
Another easy way to do divebombs is to dump the bar slightly, tap the harmonic, and rip it. It will give you a lower starting point, make the strings slinky so you can tap them easier, and allows you to get much higher harmonics then starting off at the normal point
Stopped the vid to come down here and say this. Thank you and well done.
I found you from your ace Frehley video. Great stuff
everything he did had that sour feel and being a Dime fan that's his word and sound no less you just spent 30 of those minutes showing most tricks he had to pull this awesome feel he invented, the most underrated MAN in general in history.... getcha pull
these are great, you should definitely do more!!!!!
what a fantastic lesson!
Great video, man!!! Love it!!
I love that guitar! Great lesson also as usual.
Im a drummer and enjoyed watching this. Would love to learn guitar someday , looks so fun.
18:07 I use this just too much because of Dime. Adds a lot more fluidity and groove. Classic Dime sound ;)
