How to Crochet Continuous Join As You Go Granny Squares (with an invisible or braided look).

- Hey Everyone!
This tutorial shows you how to join your granny squares with the continuous join as you go method (cjayg). I will show you how to do this with the "invisible" look and then finish the tutorial with the "braided" or "rope" like effect. Both are lovely and work up super fast saving you time and yarn and way less sewing!
The yarn I'm using in this tutorial is Michaels Loops and Threads Impeccable in the colour Putty. If you are following along with the Finn's Blanket Pattern you will be joining with the colour Navy. Unfortunately Navy wasn't showing up well on my test video and I really wanted you to be able to see the effect the braided look has once finished.

I just did this for my granny square blanket with BLACK yarn and looks so good!!! I was worried you wouldnt really be able to see the "pattern" /"braided" look with the darker yarn, but you totally can! and adds such a nice effect to the blanket. Not to mention tutorial was super helpful. Also shows what to do when you run out of yarn and how to add another roll mid project.

I saw this done about 4 years ago but it started from the bottom . I have used it a couple of times. As you say it is very simple and have only two ends to weave in at the end. I am doing an Afghan at the moment that has 279 3inch squares.

This is just fabulous and your teaching style is lovely. Is this technique available anywhere in a printed version, either pictures or text? I can't always have my laptop open while I'm crocheting and mu memory is not what it was? No doubt I'll totally 'get it' soon, but in the meantime.....

Once you have it all joined let’s say I wanted to do one final round around the whole project.. I’m just not sure what to do when I get to the space between squares where the outside corners were joined because it’s not a traditional Cluster space
Yes! So I always put 2 DC on the one side and 2 DC on the other side of where two squares join. It ends up being a “cluster” of four-but it keeps the edges nice and flat. If you want to do an audition round after that just work regular clusters of 3DC all around. Works out perfectly.
@@nautikrallcrochet okay since my project has a single CS between clusters should I do that or will it affect how flat it lays… or maybe single chain until that spot?

Hi Jen, it’s entirely up to you…you don’t have to, it’ll lay flat and everything will be fine. However, if you like a more open look you may want to!

Thanks for this video! I'm trying to understand one thing: how do you join more than four squares? I mean if you have to join eight squares to make a single line, how do you do it?
So when I joined the second square to the first one…you follow those instructions along until all 8 squares are joined. Then you crochet along the bottom of all 8 until your back at the bottom corner of the first square. Then you would start joining your next row by following the instructions for the 3rd and 4th square until all 8 are joined to your top row. Then you just continue to repeat that row until your whole blanket is joined!!
I only show the first two squares of each row to keep the video short ❤️

I’m trying to understand the flow of how to do this blanket. You make two squares to start, then join them, then make a third square and join that one and continue to your left that way?
YES!! that is exactly right!! Once you get the width you want then you finish up the bottom of those squares which will bring you back to the start or the row on the right hand side. Then proceed to add your next row! ☺️
I usually make all my squares first, lay them all out the way I want them and make my piles by the row so you can just fire right through them!

I wouldn't use the continuous join if you want to change colours. I would use a regular join as you go method and attach each square individually. You follow the same method-just complete the whole round on the square and fasten off. Then attach the next. There is a Sunburst video that shows how to join them separately on my channel! M
so after you attach all your squares in row 1 you crochet straight across the bottom and then start attaching row 2?

I have watched this 20x and still cannot figure out how to begin the 2nd row of squares 😢
The second row starts at time 19:15….
Work the first half of the corner, then you put a standing DC stitch into the square you want to join and continue on!
Will this join work ok for a wool blanket or would that be too heavy?
I usually use the tight join for wool blankets-there’s a tutorial for it in my videos section as well!
Do you do a complete corner at the top after adding a square?
After you e joined the square to the previous one you finish the corner and then continue on across the top of the square. The next corner (top left) you complete the whole corner before going down the side-then you do a half corner, ch 2 and join the next square with a standing dc. Hope this help!!
