How to Join Granny Squares with an INVISIBLE Seam (Mattress / Ladder Stitch Tutorial)

  • In this beginner crochet tutorial, we will learn how to sew granny squares together with the Invisible Seam (also called Mattress or Ladder Stitch). This seam leaves a completely invisible finish on the front, with perfect, sharp corners. The stitches are barely noticeable on the back. Although this stitch is time consuming, the result is worth it as no other joining technique gives such a neat finish. This seam should work with most granny square patterns that have chain 2 corners.
    THE ORIGINS OF THIS TECHNIQUE
    This stitch has a wide range of uses in many different crafts such as knitting, doll making, and sewing. It goes by many different names - I even learned to how to use it for suturing when I worked as a midwife. I do not claim to have come up with this technique myself. I learned a version of this stitch for granny squares years ago from a blog post online - it has been so long I am not 100% sure where from. It may have been here as I remember I definitely learned JAYG here: www.cherryhear...

    I’m making a granny square sweater with really contrasting colors and needed an invisible join and this is so perfect!! I’ve used my darkest yarn to sew my squares together and it’s completely invisible from the front and the edges are soo clean! I was trying to sew them together with another method that was supposed to be invisible but wasn’t, and I had to take apart the whole front panel of my sweater and redo it in a fit of frustration, but this completely solved my problem. Thank you! I've been watching several different joining methods but feel this looks the best for both an invisible seam as well as a flat one.
    I've been making a bucket hat with a row of small granny squares that I need to join together, and then attach to the main part of the hat, so wanted something that looked neat and flat but also didn't want the join to be visible, so I think this will work well.
    If you were doing the same would you choose this stitch or would you join it a different way? I figured I'd come to you as you always produce such neat and precise looking work! 😊

    The squares I want to join have ch3 corners. What changes would I need to make to this method for it to work? I’m thinking either using the center chain of the three to connect a square to two others (above and at the side, reusing that chain, OR skipping over that chain and not connecting it to another square. What would you suggest?

    • @meemamakes
      @meemamakes  7 месяцев назад

      I’ve not tried it myself but from other comments on social media, people seem to either skip the centre chain like you said or pick either the 1st and 2nd or the 2nd and 3rd chains and the corner chains and make sure to do this on every square. Maybe do some practice joins to see which you prefer?

    How do you determine the length of yarn you need to join in comparison to your squares (for example, 1.5x or 2x the length of your square)?? I have quite a lot of them to join and I would like to avoir running out before the end, and yet I dont want to waste. Can't find that info anywhere. Thank$!

    • @meemamakes
      @meemamakes  3 месяца назад

      I find with this stitch you don't need a huge amount more than the length of your yarn - maybe about 1.25x more. But I hate using too long lengths of yarn so if I'm doing a bigger project then I'll use shorter lengths of yarn and join them using the Russian Join as I am sewing.

    Hi, first time ever joining squares for my first ever project ( yey 🎉) & i want to make sure: if i have two pieces of 4 squares like que one you got there, when i join them i should do it joining the corner like you did the 2nd time, correct?
    Also any tips to know i'm not pulling to much/little when joining?
    If i have more squares do you recommend i do it in one go or should i stop after a certain amount?
    Should i pull them together after a few stitches or is it ok to pull it qll in at once?
    Sorry for all the questions but i'll have to do this in a couple days & have no idea what i'm doing 😅

    • @meemamakes
      @meemamakes  9 месяцев назад +1

      Don’t apologise, always happy to answer questions!
      In answer to your first question yes, do the corner like the 2nd time whenever it’ll be the last time you pass that corner.
      For your second question about pulling too much - I tend to pull it until it just about zips it up, and then I stretch the two squares and see if I can see the stitches. If I can them I’ll pull a bit more.
      For your third, it’s up to you entirely. I find if I’m making a big project eg a blanket then I prefer to do do it in sections and then join the sections because even with the stitch markers holding it together it can all get twisted and tangled. If it’s a small project like a bag or cardigan I do it all in one go.
      There is no right or wrong so maybe try a few different ways of doing it to find your preference. Good luck and I’m here if you have any more questions

    What a superb tutorial thank you so much and you’ve demonstrated it perfectly ❤️ How do you calculate how much yarn you need for a continuous row of sewing? If you run out of yarn would you do a starting stitch into a corner like you did when you started? Hope you know what I mean 😄 x

    • @meemamakes
      @meemamakes  10 месяцев назад

      Yes I do know what you mean. I have done this before, weaving the ends back along my stitches. I’ve also joined two bits of yarn together with the Russian join when I didn’t have quite enough too (tutorial here: m.ruclips.net/video/iXeDYVcRGls/видео.html)
      Or you could calculate it by measuring the length of yarn before and after stitching 1 square, then multiply this by the number of squares you are joining and add a bit extra just in case. I hope this helped!

    Fantastic video, I've never seen this stitch before, however, I do have a query. How does this work if you don't have a corner chain of two stitches? Does it still work? My squares only have a chain of one on the corner.

    This is by far the best looking seam stitch I’ve seen while searching for something flat and invisible for my blanket. But how would you go about figuring out how much yarn you’ll need if you have to sew a lot of squares (more than 40 in my case) together? If I use this stitch, would I need to pre measure out all my yarn so that I can sew a bunch of strips first, or just attach individual squares and weave in all the ends one at a time? Thank you so much for the tutorial!

    • @meemamakes
      @meemamakes  12 часов назад

      It would work either way you describe so it would be down to personal preference. I do things a little differently - I guess how much yarn I’ll need and if i end up running out I join some more yarn to that length with a Russian join. It’s worked well for two cardigans and you can barely see the Russian join 😊

      When I discovered it years ago (I think from a blog but I'm not 100% sure which one) I couldn't believe it either until I tried it for muself. Good luck on joining your blanket, it will take a while but the effort will be worth it.

    I have just subscribed and then saved this excellent video. I’ve had a few crochet disasters over the years when granny square bedspreads that I’ve crocheted together, after a couple of years , have unraveled along the crocheted seams…….literally a never ending story! 😢
    So now I always sew my squares together…….but I am never happy with that because the result looks thick and clumsy after all the hard work making the squares ( see Janie Crow Love is enough). Many thanks for this clear explanation of a truly useful stitch.

      Welcome to the channel and thankyou for commenting. I am so glad this tutorial was helpful for you! Another tip for preventing crochet unravelling is using a sharp needle when weaving ends in - I find they are much more secure than a blunt needle

    I'm very grateful for this little tutorial. The mattress stitch is exactly what I need to join my granny squares, and it works like a charm. You are very talented at explaining and showing what to do. My mother as well as my grandmother taught me to crochet when I was a little girl, but I only started again now as I am a granny myself. Thank you for this helpful video!

    Love your clear explanation! So, as a ‘old’ newbie, would you join four squares and then another four squares then join those bigger squares together in the same method? I suppose I’m asking what the next step is when making a blanket?

    • @meemamakes
      @meemamakes  3 месяца назад

      You could join like that but I usually either join them into strips/rows of squares along one side of each square and then sew those strips together or I would join in a grid pattern i.e. work all the vertical joins with one long length of yarn then all the horizontal joins. I hope I've explained that ok!

    Thanks again!!

    • @meemamakes

    i've been doing almost the same thing, except i sew together a whole row with the invisible seam and then sew that row onto my blanket with one LONG strand of yarn. i do my corners the way you do it the second way (front loops of the corner stitches 12:44). i've found this was so much easier, but i do have to weave in lots of ends.
    this is the first ever blanket i'm ever making. i'm so worried that the yarn that holds the corners together is just going to snap lmfao

    • @meemamakes
      @meemamakes  8 месяцев назад

      Honestly it depends on the yarn itself - this tutorial is acrylic which is general a very strong fibre but if your yarn has a weaker or shorter fibres in it then it may snap. I usually pull a scrap bit of yarn really hard and if it just breaks then I use other yarn for seaming.

    Great video but what wasn't explained was how to know how much yarn to use to attach the squares. If you estimate, how to do you fix it if you run out?

    • @meemamakes
      @meemamakes  25 дней назад

      @@CherylJewhurst It’s pretty easy to estimate, just 1.5 times the length of the seam. If you run out, add on more yarn with the Russian join. Hope this helps
