If your corners have 3 chains (or 1) then you will need to adapt this method in one of two ways: 1) Assign either the 1st and 2nd chains or the 2nd and 3rd chains as the "corner ch2" and treat the other chain as if it were any other stitch. Your squares may be slightly skewed but if you are consistent in the chains you assign as the corners and potentially block your finished project you should still have the same look as if you did 2 chains. 2) Ignore the 2nd chain entirely, i.e. put your needle in through the first chain and out through the third chain. You squares will not be skewed but you will not have sharp right angles in your corners I recommend trying both and going with the method you prefer the look of. Remember there is no right or wrong in crochet, only preferences for different techniques!
It's been sitting in hand sewing, I mostly see it used to close up pillows or stuffed toys. Never would have thought to do it with crochet though, now I've just gotta get my brain to comprehend how to do it with my hooks since I don't have a tapestry needle

Thank you so much. You explain this technique so clearly. My late Mum was fantastic with crochet and tried to teach me so many times but I just didn’t get it. Since losing her I’ve been determined to learn in her honour and can now crochet granny squares and I LOVE it. Your tutorials are amazing and you explain at just the right pace. Thank you😊
I have never been able to get my squares to look and lay flat when stitching together! I quit making squares until recently then rolled my eyes because it was time to stitch together. I saw your short video and found you here for the whole video. WHAT A GAME CHANGER!!! Thank you thank you thank you for showing the stitch and the how-to ! My project is stitching together beautifully. Thank you again. ❤
After 60 years of knitting and crocheting this is the best join I have ever seen. I just tried with knitting and it worked just as well. BRILLIANT!! Thank you so much.
I have a big blanket to put together and as I expect it to be heavy, I think this is going to be my best chance of having it hold together in a seamless looking way. Thank you!
Thank you for adding this tutorial video. I found it a bit tricky to start with, not your fault in any way, I just couldn't get my head round it. I've got the hang of it now, only another 48 squares to attach too. Thanks again, x
Finally showing the corners and how to properly pull stitches up snug. I have struggles with this. Thank you for this perfect tutorial. Need to get busy with my Granny Squares. Teaching my daughters friend how to make them. I can now teach her this technique too.
Since I saw this video I thought about it for a couple of days and decided to pull my project apart and redo using your method. Your instruction was very clear and easy to follow. Very happy with the finish, it was worth it. Where have you been all my life, indeed, but from now on I will not look back! Thank you so much!!
This is, hands down, the best mattress stitch join tutorial for crocheted squares. Absolute perfection. So much love and gratitude to you for your time and talent in making this video for us. ❤🙏
Thank you for this precise tutorial. Now I can join my granny squares which have been sitting on the side for almost a month because I can't find the right way to join them until I found your channel. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
I'm very grateful for this little tutorial. The mattress stitch is exactly what I need to join my granny squares, and it works like a charm. You are very talented at explaining and showing what to do. My mother as well as my grandmother taught me to crochet when I was a little girl, but I only started again now as I am a granny myself. Thank you for this helpful video!
I’ve been struggling with the 4 corners for forever, it would always look sloppy but now they look beautiful!! At first this I was getting flustered bc I just couldn’t seem to get it down but after watching the tutorial more closely and understanding it omg!! Easiest join ever!! Thank you!!
I have just subscribed and then saved this excellent video. I’ve had a few crochet disasters over the years when granny square bedspreads that I’ve crocheted together, after a couple of years , have unraveled along the crocheted seams…….literally a never ending story! 😢 So now I always sew my squares together…….but I am never happy with that because the result looks thick and clumsy after all the hard work making the squares ( see Janie Crow Love is enough). Many thanks for this clear explanation of a truly useful stitch.
Welcome to the channel and thankyou for commenting. I am so glad this tutorial was helpful for you! Another tip for preventing crochet unravelling is using a sharp needle when weaving ends in - I find they are much more secure than a blunt needle
That is the *best* youtube tutorial i have seen for invisible join! This is NOT mattress stitch though!! Mattress stitch is totally different and noticeable too. Best youtube tutorial i have seen for that is the 10 year old Moogly one. The invisible join is way, way better looking and i think also easier to do.
This stitch has different names in different places around the world 🤷♀️ I have found that mattress stitch is the most common name I’ve seen for this technique in crochet and knitting, so that is what I call it
Wow! I replayed it many a times to see heavens where is that red thread gone. I struggled so much while joining my first ever grannies. Thank you. My go to tutorial channel from now onwards 😊
RUclips was reading my mind. I came to search for a video on invisible joining on the lego blanket I'm constructing, and your video was right up front. This is genius! Exactly was I was looking for, thank you!
Thank you for this tutorial! I am doing a blanket that calls for the mattress/ladder stitch, and was SO happy that my joins look like yours, even the 4 corner join! You were very thorough
I'm stunned! Thats' amazing! I was searcing a way to sew the parts of the Blossom and Blooms blanket from Sirdar and you just pop in my suggestion list! You're a queen, thantk you so much !
I have just finished a complex moroccan HEXAGON cushion using this method and all the stitches are perfectly lined up to make the pattern look as it should ...... I have used ladder stitch in the past and sometimes the stitches don't line up properly when complete. Thank you so much for this tutorial Meema, I'll never use another joining stitch again !
I've been looking through videos on youtube for hours and can't find a single video that tells you how to tie off the seam yarn. Why isn't anyone explaining that?
This seaming method is perfection! I've used other versions of the mattress stitch and this one makes it so much easier with perfect corners. Thank you so much for sharing your technique. God Bless.
This is awesome. Thank you. I have been crocheting for years and I never even heard anyone mention this stitch. Thank you for your hard work to teach and video this for us. It is greatly appreciated.
this stitch is impressive! when i first saw the preview for your video i didnt believe that this stitch would actually be invisible. im currently working on my first blanket and have been searching for ways to connect my granny squares and will defineitely be going with this method. great work!!
When I discovered it years ago (I think from a blog but I'm not 100% sure which one) I couldn't believe it either until I tried it for muself. Good luck on joining your blanket, it will take a while but the effort will be worth it.
I have seen and tried many ways of joining Granny squares. But most this leaves the corners open or do some kind of weird filling. I'm really glad i find this. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this! ❤ I’m making a Minecraft blanket for my nephew, which requires 360 small granny squares and LOTS of different colors. It will be difficult using coordinating yarn all the way through, so this invisible stitch is precisely what I’ve been searching for. I also love how well you explain and show everything. Those corners! 🥰 Thank you again!
I’m making a granny square sweater with really contrasting colors and needed an invisible join and this is so perfect!! I’ve used my darkest yarn to sew my squares together and it’s completely invisible from the front and the edges are soo clean! I was trying to sew them together with another method that was supposed to be invisible but wasn’t, and I had to take apart the whole front panel of my sweater and redo it in a fit of frustration, but this completely solved my problem. Thank you so much ❤️
Thank you SO much for this!! I am making a baby blanket and I want it to have a herringbone look, so no seams between the squares. Al the "invisible" tutorials I found were not it! I saw some tutorials on the mattress stitch but they looked so complicated. I was ready to scrap the project until I found this video. THANK YOU!!!
Good video! Thanks. I have been checking and practicing several ways to join grannies in a project I am working on, a Summer top for girls; I have found the way I will do it from now on, your way. I have watched this join technique in other videos, but your video is so clearly explained, shown, that I already saved it to my crochet related playlist.
What I like about this video, as compared to the half dozen other I watched, is Meema tells you how to start so you lock in your yarn and then she tells you how to join corners so they're perfect. Also, she's actually doing the mattress stitch, not the ladder stitch and then calling it a mattress stitch. So this IS the video.... IMHO. Thanks Meema!
I was looking for a joining method for a cardi I’m designing, and this looks like the perfect solution, especially since I may have to use a different yarn or sewing thread for joining! Thanks!

Thank you! I've been watching several different joining methods but feel this looks the best for both an invisible seam as well as a flat one. I've been making a bucket hat with a row of small granny squares that I need to join together, and then attach to the main part of the hat, so wanted something that looked neat and flat but also didn't want the join to be visible, so I think this will work well. Hello, I have an afghan that is gojng to be 6 ft square. Can I just cut reasonable lengths of yarn and tie then together with square knots to keep going?

Hello, I have an afghan that is gojng to be 6 ft square. Can I just cut reasonable lengths of yarn and tie then together with square knots to keep going?
