The Greater Pittsburgh area is full of all kinds of trains. From its primary liveries of CSX and Norfolk Southern, to the foreign power of Union Pacific and BNSF. Anything can happen around my home town of the Steel City. This video is the March 2015 edition of Steel City Trains. Here we have decent number of trains rolling through the local towns on their respective rail lines.
CSX takes up a good bit of this video so we start over in Port Vue, PA on the Youghiogheny Branch at around milepost 16. Here we catch a slow moving CSX Autorack train led by an AC44CW (CSX CW44AC) and an ES40DC. The pull the long train slow and cumbersome past the scrap yard and off into the distance.
About a mile away in McKeesport, I set up quickly to catch a mixed freight train with a four engine lashup consisting of an ES44AH, a rare SD40-3, an SD50 and an AC44CW. They pull the long freight train to the south out of McKeesport and down through Port Vue headed for Connellsville.
I found a new location to film the next train. Down in the Southside of Pittsburgh, Southside Riverfront Park, is located right next to CSX's Pittsburgh Sub and includes a signal bridge to the left out of frame. Around the bend we catch another autorack train this time led by two Dash 8 locomotives.
Back in McKeesport, CSX was moving their smaller engines around the yard. In the meantime headed around the curve was a personal favorite. A loaded coal train being pulled by an AC6000, and an SD70MAC. These engines give the Mon Valley a real true taste of power.
We finally move over to Homestead, PA where we sit next to the NS Mon Line near the Whemco Steel Company at milepost 12. Here we catch two northbound trains and a southbound train. The first is an intermodal train headed north through Pittsburgh led by an SD70M-2 and two Dash 8s.
The second is another intermodal train headed south to CP-16 in Duquesne where it will rejoin the Pittsburgh line. An ES44DC and a Dash 9 provide the horsepower for this one.
I saved the best for last. If the AC6000 wasn't enough, this next train produces around 13,000 horsepower. Pulling a mixed freight train to the north, this NS train is led by an SD80MAC, and SD40E, and an Ex-UP SD90MAC derated to 4,300 hp, instead of the original 6,000 hp. But nonetheless, an incredible display of power that shows just how strong trains really are.
    Hope you enjoy the video
