  • I remained at the Cassandra Railroad Overlook for the remainder of the day.
Train action was busy between 3 PM & 6 PM. First up were two hot westbound intermodals NS 21E & NS 21J followed by two eastbound double stack trains NS 20Q & NS 20T (with an interesting engine arrangement, consist of SD70M-2, SD70M & SD70). Afterwards empty trash train NS 67J showed up led by an SD60E. After mixed freight 10N pushed its way east with all the power its engines got, empty autorack train NS 11J came down the hill led by an SD70, followed minutes after was NS 507 empty coal train (Note: last time I saw NS 507 was last year led by NS #8099 Southern heritage unit). Then it was a meet between intermodal trains NS 24Z & NS 23Z. Before the next train, a rain cell moved through the area with some moderate steady rain, I would say it only lasted about a half hour. I did have to use the rain cover for one train, westbound mixed freight NS 13G.
After the westbound Amtrak Pennsylvanian (with engine #514 B32-8WH) moving through fast, people began to show up for the once-a-year Cassandra All-Nighter, where railfans relax, chat & watch trains all through the night. Not all people stayed up all night including myself. I did saw a couple of familiar faces including Mike A., Jason B. & Chris W. & met a few new people including Paul R.
Then between 7 PM to 8 PM train activity started again with empty slab train NS 61Z, followed by two usual westbound intermodals NS 23M & NS 21M, then oil train NS 64R led by the Monongahela heritage unit and with an SD70ACe as distributed power unit (DPU) at the end of the train. After an early trip on NS 37A, the heritage unit was put in front of this oil train at Conway, PA (Northwest of Pittsburgh). Funny part was the engineer said "Smile for the camera", guess he know people are ready to take photos and videos of the train. Westbound empty oil train NS 65X showed up minutes later.
Then all the lights at the overlook came on as dusk turned into night. Train activity was OK, not busy nor slow. Even a local historian came talked to me and shared an interesting history behind the Pittsburgh Line, especially the Gallitzin Tunnels & the Horseshoe Curve. Remaining trains for the day in order are: Mixed freight trains NS 10A & NS 12G, monster double stack train NS 21T, intermodal trains NS 20E & NS 24M & finally mixed freight train NS 19G. All in all a great night, and my first time attending this event.
Next part covers Sunday's train action. I checked two spots that I have never been before.
Note: I'm really really NOT GOOD w/ train symbols. I try to get as many as I can through my scanner or asking other railfans around me (if any).**

Excellent video Allen, I would've loved to go, but I had to work. Quite the lashup on 20N, with the head-end lashup all different SD70s and the 4-banger on the rear. I love who the horns echo though there too, the horn on the SD70 leading 11J was especially spooky.

Thanks, Pat! Yeah, I thought that was quite a lash-up with all the SD70 seriess, comparable to my NKP weekend with a grain train led by the standard cab SD70, followed by the M-2 & a BNSF SD70ACe. And some of those SD70's have those weird horns.

    I saw NS 1070 and 8101 missed the 8104 and saw AMTK 145. I missed 8104 because of a late HU.com post.
