According to the London Naval Treaty, if you mount that gun on a light cruiser (a ship of around 10,000 tons displacement) its not a light cruiser any more, its a heavy cruiser.

Whatever you can say about World of Tanks, they're doing the lord's work sponsoring tank restorations like this. Excellent to not just get a quick history overview of this beast in this video, but also a look at how it has been restored and the compromises needed to be made to do so. Love to see more of this!

Lots of misleading information in the video...every few seconds in fact. The engineers did not "believe" things would go a certain way then test them to find out. They calculated them, knew the results in advance, then had built what they were told to build. They did not "test things" then "find out what would happen" to design things. The reason new versions were delayed, new versions made, and new results used for later results were simply money. They were allocated money to do one thing, then a delay to decide to give them more money, then more money and a new build, and a delay to find more money. Had zero to do with testing anything, lol..

The British went on a binge in the 1950s to mount large tank guns in lightly armoured turrets to existing tank hulls. The Charioteer was an 84mm 20 Pounder gun mounted on the WW2 Cromwell tank, it saw service 1954 to 1990s. Then the Conway mounted an 120mm gun on a Centurion hull, but only pilot tanks were built. The FV4005 Centaur mounted a 7.2", 183mm L4 gun to a Centurion Mk3 hull. The huge turret was called the "Barn" or more commonly the "Outhouse". For anti-tank work it fired a HESH round not a high velocity APC shell. Only 3 were tested.

Man-O-Man you guys have a fantastic collection of military equipment including 1-off items like this and everyone including private collectors and people that restore these gems and even make them operational again for regular folks and military enthusiasts to see & ride on is just a blessing. Also keeping them under cover and taking care of them is also so comforting. This particular tank reminds me of an up gunned version of a Soviet KV-2 from WW2, at least that is how the turret reminds me of.
It is a God send that so many museums and private individuals are saving this military equipment for future generations. Imagine if we could have a collection of original Roman Army Trebuchet's or Siege Towers or Chariots and the like, but they were all lost to history as they were made of wood. These Tanks and Artillery and such pieces are made of metal but would still be lost to history if not cared for as metal does rust and decay over time.
I can see that in the future there will be a new museum built to house all the different types of UAV's and Drones that have become the norm on today's battlefields.

The US and French information comes from a 1944 report off the DTIC/NTRL on APDS development in the US where it mentions the 1918 French production of 37/57 and 75 HEDS coming into service in late 1918.
British information on acquiring APDS in 1941 from the French comes from a scattering of books following the fall of France and the dispersal of French/Belgium engineers.
US ^APDS report also cites a French publication in German about the Germans own work in 43.
British reports, for me, come through the DTIC-NTRL and the Canada Heritage online microfilm via the London Military HQ records.

Well Paul you hit another one out of the park well done.
This has got to be one of the biggest fails I could think of and from just a simple engineering standpoint it should have never gotten as far as it did but that’s the military industrial complex for you.

Yes I was lucky enough to get to all three days of Tankfest 2024
    Coming down from Yorkshire,
I subscribe to both Mr Hewes and the Tank Museum RUclips channels,
    Absolutely brilliant,
I came to Tankfest with my Son Harry and friend Brad , and my Brother Chris,
    We are all Tank Enthusiasts,
I have a World of Tanks account,
    Find it hard to play,
But I've had a War Thunder account,
Which I've had for eight years,
And playing Arcade Tank Ground Forces, I've made it to Top British tier,
My favourite British Tank's are The Centurion FV4005 , Conqueror and Tortoise,
Hopefully we'll be back next year 👍
Congratulations to the Guy's on doing an amazing job on the FV4005
Please work on the Conqueror Next
    Cheers
    Paul Foster 👍

This video is brilliant. The FV4005 just brings the fear of God in me for how many times I got killed by one in WOT. Always thought it was a paper or fantasy tank in the game. Didn't know it existed in real life. The size of that gun though is still absolutely ridiculous.

    • @davidpope3943
      @davidpope3943 7 месяцев назад +1

@@kevinbarry71 Well, to be fair, it’s only 183mm/8.2”. On I think it was June 11th 1944 off Gold Beach at Normandy HMS Warspite received a request for fire support onto some woodland where a large concentration of enemy armour and troops had been observed. The original request was I believe for 15 rounds rapid fire from Warspite’s 6 operational 15”/381mm main guns, ( X turret being out of service since Warspite was hit by a Fritz-X bomb in 1943) but it was allegedly misheard as FIFTY rounds of 15”. Rapid fire of her 15” guns did lead to some increasingly off-target results which actually turned out to be fortuitous as the fifty 15” shells effectively helped to chase the enemy out of the woodland.

11:43 Something nobody seems to be talking about is how absolutely _deafening_ the blast from the gun would have been in that enclosed space, only compounded by the reverberations and rattling in that thin armor. The poor crew must have dreaded pulling the trigger each time during trials. It must have been an absolute nightmare of noise in there.
