- Once again for the Easter long weekend, it was off to the NS Pittsburgh Line. This time, Josh (CSXYN4) tagged along.
We began on a rainy Good Friday morning at Lilly, PA, ducking under the Overbridge St. overpass (Note: I used a clear UV filter for a good part of the day to keep raindrops off the lens). The first hour featured some good consist, including eastbound mixed freight NS 12G with a CSX in the mix. What was really unexpected was the UP's aboard westbound mixed freight NS 11V led by an ex-UP SD90MAC (not yet refurbished into an SD70ACu). Westbound empty coal drag NS 537 returns with the usual 60I's.
Using the following lull we headed west to the automatic 263 signal bridge in Summerhill, PA. There, the action heated up from 9:30 Am until noon. There were some good consists in this rush, starting with eastbound mixed freight NS 14G not only with NS #1111 "Barcode unit" on the point, but for the first time, I saw mid-train DPU's being used on this line. After a couple of the usual intermodals, westbound empty tanker NS 65R made its way through with the Monongahela heritage unit on the point (NS #8025). Eastbound mixed NS 36A featured some high-and-wide loads (pipes) on the train and per the Altoona feed, it held up westbound traffic in that area for a while. Also per the feed, eastbound hopper NS 66D received a track authority onto the NBER.
So, using the next hour-long lull, we headed over to the next spot, which will pick up in the next part.
*Note: I'm really really NOT GOOD w/ train symbols. I try to get as many as I can through my scanner or asking other railfans around me (if any).* Авто/Мото
Love the DPU's on 14G.
My old stomping ground, brother and me filmed many tapes along South Fork to Horseshoe curve Thanks for sharing.
+William Reed No problem!
Carney's Crossing in Lilly, my brother and my fav. place for filming. Good shooting, Thanks.
+William Reed Thanks for the kind words!
Great video! I was in Cresson in 2014, as well as Horseshoe Curve and Gallitzin Tunnels. It is a great time, LOTS of action out there!
+Mike Walsh Thanks! That's why I keep coming back to this line.
Excellent video
+Railhead1956 Thanks!
Nice work, Al!
+Yard Limit Thanks!
great train video ...
+david pinewhistle Thanks!
Always a pleasure to watch your videos. Excellent as usual Allen. Do you think you might make it up to the curve this year? The brush and trees are being cut as I write this.
+iusetano Thanks, Hans! And yes, I will try to make it to the inside curve next time, which would be Memorial Day long weekend, now that the vegetation is cleared.
Awesome video Allen! I got to get out there one day lol!
+waldwickperson Thanks, Mike A! The next Tri-State admins trip perhaps?
Possibly, lol! We were thinking about staying a weekend out in the Altoona area, but we arent sure if that will actually happen
Great video, I have a model of 9028. Does this give me an excuse to run it as a DPU? ;)
The NS SD90MAC leading a couple of Union Pacific engines on NS 11V took over my house in Toronto (came from CP Autorack Train earlier from Bartlett Avenue Canada). The yellow consist on this train caused me battles to be fought everywhere!!!!! OH NO!!!!! :/
