The passenger train you spoke of ran until 1985, and when it ended service it was the last privately-operated commuter train in the country. It was operated by the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad, which I believe has been more or less absorbed into CSX.

The Pittsburgh trolley line actually crossed the Mon on the Smithfield St. Bridge. The former PRR bridge in use now was rebuilt to carry the T across the river in 1985.
